Diner Reviews
  • "Had the spicy yellowtail and tuna rolls so tasty with perfect spiciness. Margaritas were fantastic"

  • "I hadn't been to City Grill for dinner for a number of years, so was looking forward to a special occasion there recently. The service was excellent and the view can't be beat. But, sadly, the food and the decor haven't kept up. We started with what was described as a signature appetizer - the calamari. It was so coated in heavy breading and smothered in goopy, spicy sauce that the delicate seafood was totally lost. It looked like the seafood version of a blooming' onion - not something I expected at a quality restaurant. The main dishes were definitely better, but not enough to overcome the miserable appetizer or high prices. Stick with happy hour at their bar and skip dinner."

  • "Staff was awesome. Despite being very crowded they went out of their way to make it a special evening. Happy hour items and prices were perfect. Dinner was exactly what we'd hoped for."

  • "kung pao calamari was good, but their chicken dish and salad were unpalatable. Bread was acceptable. Waiter was condescending and inattentive. might be a good place to grab a drink at the piano bar, but there are so many good food places in Portland, this was a big disappointment."
    Dined on 7/22/2014
  • "The waiter suggested an incredible appetizer (calamari). Went to meet some friends for lunch with girlfriend and it was perfect. No pressure from waiter to rush and order or pay and leave. Atmosphere was quiet enough to talk comfortably. Would definitely go back when I am in the area."

  • "Excellent food, great service. View of the city is outstanding."

  • "One of the all time best dinning experiences we've had !"

  • "Come here for an occasion, or the bar scene. If you are casual, I suggest dining in the bar area. The main restaurant is very pricey."

  • "Great view of Portland and a must go to if you are in town for a short time!"
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "Based on strong recommendations, I opted for the Portland City Grill to host family. Suffice to say, we were not disappointed, and the dining experience exceeded even those high expectations. The ambience and stunning scenic views are worth it alone, but by no means does that diminish the actual meal. The steaks were cooked to absolute perfection, the sides flavorful, and the portions were just right. We also shared a marionberry cobbler for dessert, which was also delightful. The wine list is solid. Service is perfect; the wait staff are courteous and attentive while not being overly intrusive. Even as it got busy, we never felt rushed. All told, it was precisely what is expected of this level of dining. I will be back."

  • "I made a reservation for 8 for our end-of-the-year office dinner via Open Table, and received both a confirmation email and then a phone call as well to ensure that the time and number were correct. Our food was fantastic - all of our employees really enjoyed the meal. Our server, whom I believe was named Ellie (sp?), was very knowledgeable and provided a solid experience. The view, as always, was fantastic. A bit too noisy for a large party to hear at opposite ends of the table, but that's to be expected in a large dining space, and especially one as busy as PCG. Thanks for a great end to our year!"

  • "My first time to Portland City Grill, it was an amazing dining experience. Our server was friendly, personable and had some great recommendations that we followed. The view was excellent, get there early for a decent table at a window. I can't speak enough about the food, it was everything I wanted and then some."

  • "Took a group of 10 clients to Portland City Grill and had a great experience. Food and service were outstanding. View is great. Wine list notable. We had a reservation, were seated promptly and served efficiently. Restaurant was busy and a little noisy but did not affect conversation very much. Would definitely return."

  • "I have dined here several times and always found the food excellent, Bruch was also very good and wonderful service form Izzey, He really made an effort to be a great host and the family enjoyed his character and charm. All around a great Bruch and we will be back."

  • "the service was beyond good. the dinner was delicious and the views were overwhelming. the restaurant was completely filled when we went - on a saturday night. This may have been the reason that there was quite a bit of noise. But altogether a great dinner and I would go back many times."

  • "we had a reservation for 8:30pm on a Saturday night. It ended up being an hour and a half wait just to get seated, granted we asked for the window seat. Service was good, fast no complaints there. Food was pretty decent, not worth the price but you're paying for the view."

  • "This restaurant was recommended by friends from work who have lived in Portland for most of their lives. I wanted "the true Portland experience" as well as wonderful food for our good friends visiting from California. We were not disappointed. The overall experience was awesome! The best halibut we have ever had, the service impeccable, yet not stuffy. Words cannot describe the view! Thank you!"

  • "Fabulous service. There was a slight mishap with a dish and the chef made a totally new one, on the house."

  • "Portland City Grill offered a fantastic setting for my wife's birthday. The 180 degree view was spectacular on this day and combined with the dining experience made it great day to remember. Our server, Katie, was tremendously helpful in making wine selections as well as helping one of our party who requires a special diet. Our selections of sole and the sushi were nicely done light and delightful."

  • "This was my first time to this establishment. Lucky for my I had to pick someplace to go for my anniversary, and my company gave me a gift card. So they sort of made my choice for me. I had been told nothing but good things, and was not let down. Only issue was I ordered to much food and couldn't finish."

  • "Had appetizers in bar and noticed on the happy hour bar menu a molten lava cake item. Our table was window-side and decorated with "happy anniversary" glitter and a nice card signed by some of the staff. My wife ordered the halibut which she said was a little dry and not very flavorful. I ordered the steak and steelhead Oscar. I ordered the steak medium and it arrived medium well. The steelhead Oscar was delicious. When it came to dessert we were informed by our waiter that the molten lava cake was only allowed in the bar. We paid our dinner and went to the bar to have dessert, where I was informed that if I wanted ice cream with the cake it, it would come from a separate kitchen and may not come contemporaneously with cake. Odd."

  • "We started with happy hour which had amazing views drinks and appetizers for the price. When we moved to the dining room the room was crowded, noisey and the food was good but not great for the price."

  • "I chose to take my boyfriend from Colorado here while he was in town for my birthday. I had heard so many lovely things about the Portland City Grill (e.g., the ambiance, the view, the food, etc), but I didn't think about the fact that it was a seafood/steak restaurant and that my boyfriend and I are mostly vegetarian. However, we decided to go for it ("when in Rome") and order steak and stuffed chicken. Unfortunately, his steak was pretty chewy, my potatoes tasted like they were from a box, and my drink was so sweet that I felt like I had to wash my hands to cleanse them of the sugar after each sip. The view WAS fabulous though, even though we didn't end up with a window seat... there's not really a bad seat in the restaurant!"

  • " service was great, view is excellent, it was the wife's birthday and there was a card and the table was decorated nice touch"

  • "Expecting the very best that Portland has to offer. Food was OK, had the recommended Kung poa Calamari, it was like eating an over cooked sweet and sour breaded item at you local Safeway Deli. So much breading I couldn't tell if I had a piece of calamari or not, when I finally got a piece it was overcooked and extremely chewy. My wife had the seafood soup and it was a little weird, it again had too much "sweetness" to it, then I ordered the Beef Short ribs, the meat was very tender, more like a roast though, then the gravy, once again was too "sweet" the chef that night had a thing for "sweetness" maybe it's his TM. Don't go there Hungry, the food is pretty! but if you're hungry might consider somewhere else, and a little less Spendy!!"

  • "The drinks were perfect, my scampi shrimp linnguini was perfection. We could not manage desert there was so much of our main courses. Thank you."

  • "We arrived for our reservation, and were given the option to take our table immediately, or wait 30 minutes for a window seat. We decided to be seated right away at a table one row away from the window. Spectacular view from every table in the room! Our waiter, Jason, was professional and knowledgeable. He had just the right timing, and was there when we needed him. The food was excellent, the steak and salmon were cooked perfectly to order, the portions are generous."

  • "Went here for my 1st wedding anniversary and was blown away. This was not my first visit to PCG but this was a mind blowing experience. They server really made us feel like we were the only ones there. The food was amazing and there was a great wine selection. They even had some pleasant surprises for us for our special occasion."

  • "When my boyfriend and I first arrived at the grill, we thought we would be treated differently since we are gay and young-looking. We were wrong! At the end of the evening I felt like special attention had been paid to us. We were given the only two-person window seat in the house and our waiter was very attentive, albeit a little slow. Excellent ambience, fantastic view, delicious (but pricey) food. Dinner for two came to 100$ with the tip."

  • "Took an early dinner reservation (5:45PM) to get a good table and start of the dinner service. Restaurant has great views of Portland landscape. Crab cake appetizer was excellent and was served promptly. It took an extended period of time for the entrée to arrive. My fiancée ordered the Cioppino and indicated it was the worst she has ever had. I ordered a filet along with the lobster tail. The filet was properly cooked, however, it was luke warm along with the vegetables. Approximately half of the lobster tail had a mushy texture. Desert was excellent."
