This was my fourth or fifth time
at Portico. I did not enjoy the special I ordered and felt our waitor was somewhat rude. However, I usually really enjoy the experience there, which is why I gave higher ratings than I felt the experience deserved on this particular evening."

I was excited to try this place
but was immediately annoyed. The service is horrible. While they were obviously busy (which I understand), they are rude when they finally get to you and act like you are annoying them (despite the fact that we were in no rush and had not tried to flag anyone down). Most of the food was just okay, but some things were actually gross. It is a shame because the restaurant is very cute and has a nice bar and outdoor area."

This was our 3rd visit. The food
was spot on! We enjoyed the salads and the Rockfish special was great. We will definitely go back. The only slight negative is that the restaurant is a bit loud due to its size. Will probably sit outside next time."
Dined on 4/3/2014
Our meal was very good, and our
server was friendly and knowledgeable about the wine list and the menu. The only complaint is that it was VERY LOUD!! My husband and I were there for our wedding anniversary, so it would have been nice to at least converse. That was impossible without shouting--I'm not exaggerating. The restaurant has a very nice outdoor patio with a fireplace, and we have dined out there before, but this was our first time inside. I imagine we'll go again when the weather is nice enough to sit outside, but I don't know that I'd go again if I have to sit inside and scream at my dining partner. I'm very surprised that the restaurant hasn't taken steps to minimize the noise level. There's really nothing to help absorb sound."

This was my 4th time at this
eatery but 1st on a weekend night. Had a 5:00 reservation (all that was available). When we got there there were only 2 other cars - our friends and another group. Restaurant wasn't quite open yet. When we pulled in to the all but empty parking lot a woman in a red jacket was running around the lot. When we met up with our friends, the woman came up to us and said they had valet parking and she needed our keys. We all looked stunned - the lot was empty! She said it was required by ordinances. Really? Oh well, we gave her our keys and went in. Dinner was delish but service was a bit lackluster. They should at least put up a sign and say "Welcome to Portico" instead of just saying - need your keys."

This is a lovely little out of the
way place perfect for a romantic evening or a special celebration. The starters arrived quickly and the Roasted Red Pepper Soup with Crab received rave reviews. My Lamb Risotto was cooked perfectly and the Eggplant Parmesan, Roast Chicken, and other pasta dishes were a hit as well. We brought our own dessert in for a birthday celebration and the kitchen created a stunning presentation. The service was pleasant and timely. A must try!"

I keep wishing so hard that the
food would be great at this restaurant, comparable to its atmosphere, but it just never seems to make it and comes up short. Although the wedge salad was good, the main entrees, both a pizza and a fish/seafood dish were both quite forgetable."
Dined on 3/22/2014
Our group of 10 was very nicely
greeted and seated in a timely way. The wait staff amazing and very knowledgable of the menu. As far as timely in delivery of food...excellent!! The menu had a nice variation, so everyone had wide choice to choose from! We love the place from soup to entree to dessert...everyone enjoyed the evening. Prices are reasonable too..we will definitely bring our group back, it was a memorable evening at Portico!"
Dined on 3/22/2014
It was a rainy night and the quiet
inside was just perfect for a lovely romantic night. The limited wine list is my only drawback. We were pleasantly surprised by the crab artichoke appetizer which was more of a fresh bruschetta and very tasty. Entrees were pretty good. The service and ambience made the night."
Dined on 3/16/2014
As my husband and I had never been
to Portico, I decided to take him there for a birthday dinner. We were so pleasantly surprised! What a great evening! We loved the atmosphere, the service was great, and the food delicious. By the time we finished our dinner, we both knew that we would be coming back often."
Dined on 3/15/2014
Just a delightful meal , right as
the sun set in this beautiful restaurant. Service was attentive and the entrée choices varied and interesting. Even though this small restaurant was hosting a large party (20) , we hardly noticed. The kitchen turnaround time was spot on and the waitstaff never missed a beat."
Dined on 3/10/2014
Went on a Sunday night and there
were few diners. Food was excellent and service was great. Very enjoyable evening."
Dined on 3/2/2014
We went to Portico with high
hopes. The ambiance of the restaurant is good. The food was average. The best part of my meal was a wedge salad. The veal was disappointing. Not bad, but no better than a chain's. The other members of the party said their meals were "fine." One problem was that the entrees weren't hot when served. While it's not a big thing, the bread was stale. We may try it again, though the prices are high so we may pass."
Dined on 2/28/2014
We were celebrating our
Anniversary so we wanted to go somewhere "non chain" so it was suggested Portico was the place to go. It was a romantic setting however, there was a large group seated near our table and it was very loud. So loud at times that I would have to scream at my husband or get right up in his ear for him to hear me. The Waiter - Knowledgeable for the most part but you could tell he was either new or just not 100% comfortable. Did a good job though. The Food - I got the broiled platter and my husband got the special which was tuna steak. I was pretty disappointed with my dish as he shrimp and scallops were tough. However, my husbands tuna steak was out of this world amazing! Overall great exp and we will be back!"

We had guests in from out of town
and wanted to try this restaurant for some time. The waiter (very informative) food and atmosphere exceeded our expectations. Our guests were very impressed and so were we. The only exception to this positive review is that there is a mandatory valet parking policy. I don't particularly care for unknown people driving my car when I am not expecting it. When making the reservations this should be explained in advance at least for first time visitors. After revisiting the web site I did read a parking explanation under FAQ Do you have Parking? Should be more prevalent on the reservation page."
Dined on 2/21/2014
I first went to Portico's with a
group and looked forward to taking my husband there. We had a delicious meal! The baked stuffed shrimp were tender and flavorful. My husband's steak was artfully seasoned and perfectly cooked. The fries were great! At my recommendation - based on a review I read - my husband ordered the tiramisu sundae; while it tasted fine, the presentation was somewhat unappealing. We'll definitely return when we can eat outdoors."
Dined on 2/19/2014
Always a delicious meal.
Unfortunately my steak was well over cooked but they sent a new one for me."
Dined on 2/16/2014
Great mixture of food, service,
ambiance, and an easy drive."
Dined on 8/28/2013
I've dined here a half dozen
times. It is always loud! The acoustics are terrible. Tables are very close together. Do not go for a romantic evening. I think it is a little too expensive for the quality of food. Never once filled my empty water glass. It's close to my home, and not a chain. The spring/summer lunches on the patio are nice, and on cool evenings the outdoor fireplace is wonderful."
Dined on 2/10/2014
Absolutely love this place. Great
food, great ambiance. Can't believe you can find this kind of dining out in the suburbs. Every detail was excellent. We are definitely going back -- need to make reservations now..."

We were excited to finally try out
Portico. In-laws visiting from out of town sounded like a good excuse. We were promptly seated upon arrival (with reservation), unfortunately at the table next to the door. With an outside temperature of 24 we were greeted with a cold draft every time someone entered or exited the restaurant. The service was decent though our server a) spoke a million words a minute and b) was also doubling as the bartender, so his time with us was limited. Our food was fine except it was as cold as the draft from the front door. I have no doubt that the food would have been phenomenal if served at the prescribed temperature. We will visit again in hopes for the experience that we are sure they can deliver."

ONE OF RICHMOND'S BEST!!!! WORTH
THE DRIVE OUT RIVER ROAD. GREAT COMFORT FOOD AND OUTSTANDING OUTDOOR DINING WHEN AVAILABLE."
Dined on 1/20/2014
We arrived early for our
reservation and the bar was full so we decided to bundle up and sit on the patio. There was a beautiful fire going in the outdoor fireplace, romantic candles all around, cozy blankets on the chairs and beautiful bright stars overhead. We made some new friends who were also waiting for a table. We were still seated before our reservation. The food was amazing. We had the calamari to start and then the stuffed shrimp (absolutely amazing!). We finished with the tiramisu sundae...probably the best version of tiramisu I've ever had. The staff was wonderful. The restaurant was busy but not loud or obnoxious. Great place for a small group dinner or date night. I would not recommend taking children."
Dined on 1/18/2014
Having been to Portico twice, I
wanted to treat out-of-town guests to the experience, the food, the outdoor fire. When we arrived, there was a lovely glow inside, but it was dark outside. The power had gone out. The first thought was that we needed to go elsewhere and that our wonderful evening was shot. The lovely surprise was that the bar was open, the gas kitchen was fired up (except for the pizza ovens) and the patrons seemed relaxed and flexible on this Friday evening. The food was wonderfully delicious, as always. Because of the misting conditions, we did not get to move out to the fire, but the evening had been so good, we didn't feel cheated at all. Special kudos to the delightful staff. So glad we stayed!"

Excellent little restaurant in a
rather exclusive area of Richmond. Well worth the drive if you're not close to the West End. We would definitely go back again!"
Dined on 1/9/2014
Portico on New Years Eve was the
best meal/service we've experienced in the visits there which is surprising for a busy night. Food was spot on; service not at all rushed but prompt and courteous. Nice ambience until the place is full and then noise level is horrendously annoying. This Is Portico's big drawback."
Dined on 12/31/2013
I cannot recommend this place
enough! Had a date here and I've been telling everybody about it since then. The food, service and ambience are all top notch. Perfect for a romantic date! Book yor reservation now!"
Dined on 12/19/2013
Everyone in our party enjoyed
their meal - the mussel appetizer was outstanding. The restaurant is a little on the loud side but it has a great atmosphere. It might be quieter during the week but this was a Saturday night during the holidays so everyone was in a festive mood. We had read some reviews that were less than positive but no one in our party had any complaints. We all agreed the food was delicious and we'll be going back."
Dined on 12/14/2013
Portico is a wonderful spot for a
fabulous dinner with a great view. It was too cold to sit outside, but we got a great table with a view of the outdoor patio with its huge roaring fireplace. We will definitely return when it gets a bit warmer! The food was awesome and our waiter was excellent. One of our new favorite restaurants!"
Dined on 12/13/2013
The ambiance here is just amazing.
We went during the holidays and it couldn't have been prettier. The weather was perfect to even enjoy an after dinner drink by the outdoor fireplace. The service was decent. It would have probably been better if there wasn't a party of 14 who were seated just after us. Everyone was very pleasant and provided us with a great experience. The food was good as well! I will go back."
Dined on 11/29/2013
Went with another couple to
Portico and - as always - had an enjoyable meal and enjoyable time! I settled on the wood fired meat lovers pizza and it was fabulous; others had the burgers and fish of the day (Wahoo). Valet parking is a very nice touch, inside dining or outside dining is a great choice and the bar is a great starting point to a great meal. Highly recommend, but make reservations well in advance, anything less than a week before is impossible (unless you want to eat at 5 or 9)."
Dined on 11/8/2013
The title pretty much sums it
up. The food was delicious, but it was overpriced for the amount of food you get. I got the surf and turf which composed of a small steak and three small to mid size shrimp. Everything I ate tasted really good though."
Dined on 11/25/2013
This is a great place to dine. The
service and the food are extremely good. They offer free valet parking. The patio has ample heaters and even heated flooring for chilly nights. Great patio experience weather permittng."
Dined on 11/23/2013
We were able to eat outside by the
fire in November. This alone was a real treat. The food was also good. The only complaint is that it is very dark outside at the tables. They need to come up with a better lighting system than many tiny candles which go out if the wind blows."
Dined on 11/10/2013
The many times I have dined there
have always been an exceptional. The food is excellent and most important consistent in plate presentation and portion. With apeal to the eye and to the nose to enjoy first. While the mouth waits for the ensuing delights to arrive and satisfy. The wait staff are attentive without being a overbearing. Allowing you to enjoy your meal. Which is a sign of great knowledge on proper way to wait at table. Their ease with explaining the specials or to answer a question about a selection on the menu is impressive. and helpful. The over all experience is one of being in Paradise."
Dined on 11/8/2013
Everytime we dine here it proves
to be a great experience! Whether enjoying the quaint dining room, sitting at the bar or sitting out by the outdoor firecplace, the food and staff are always great!"
Dined on 11/9/2013
This was the second time I visited
the restaurant, and it left me unfavorable impression. The waiter of our table seemed to be in a bad mood, with no smile and abrupt attitude. He failed to bring us bread, and even after pointing out by one of my guests, failed to clean up the spot of spilled soup. The size of the serving was very generous, but the presentation was sloppy. The owner didn't even acknowledge us when we were heading out the door; and all through our meal he walked past our table several times with a poker face. The scene of the dining room was quite different from my first visit ten months ago: half empty. May be people are catching up with some things."
Dined on 11/4/2013
We have been to Portico several
times. The food is consistently outstanding, but the noise level inside is excessive. You need to shout to be heard across the table! This makes us think twice about coming with friends we want to converse with."
Dined on 11/2/2013
Portico is a lovely restaurant . .
. the design and layout are as enjoyable as the menu. We chose to sit inside, but look forward to going back when the weather is a bit warmer so we can sit on the beautiful patio. The food was very good. Be sure to try the calamari - it was some of the best we've ever tasted. Our entrees were also very good - and the dessert selections are worth saving some room to experience! Our server was attentive, but not obtrusive. We had a most enjoyable meal. Our one slight disappointment was the wine list -- a smaller selection and not that impressive."
Dined on 10/31/2013
It was a very good night with my
beautiful other half on sunday in October 2013. The food was great and we enjoy siting outside, but I will say that it got a bit cold as the sun went down. They had heaters for the outside to warm you up but the best part of the night was having coffee and dessert with the person you love by the warm fireplace. It made the whole night very warm."
