The renowned art of dry aging finally arrives in San Mateo, as our new dry aging window is now completed. We are proud to be the only restaurant on the Peninsula (In between San Francisco & San Jose) to have an in-house dry aging facility.
Our new menu featuring these marvelous cuts of beef is now available. Tasting menus featuring these exceptional steaks will also be offered.
To accompany your steak, our Wine List celebrates the acclaimed wines of Napa Valley, Willamette Valley, France and Italy. In addition to our steak and chop offerings, our Chef provides for a daily selection of fresh fish and seafood.

  • "Not a smile other than the person that seated us. With a restaurant that was not very busy it took 10 minutes to get water; our waitress seemingly wanted to take an order, but could not get away from the table fast enough, no validation of the orders; wine was poured with tons of cork in it, and then brought strainers to the table to glass by glass strain; and no offer to make good on poor service and a frustrating beverage experience. The steaks on the other hand were perfectly cooked and very nice cuts of meat. It has a great room for large groups so as to not overwhelm the restaurant with noise from such a large table. The food was good enough I would give the restaurant another chance."

  • "3 of us ordered the smaller Cowboy ribeye.... were told it was $29.... bill came.... $32.... Two of the 3 of us sent it back.... very rare... purple in fact. When open table reservation was made the restaurant was advised this was an 89th birthday for one of the guests. No one seemed to know this until the "END of the dinner when a very small scoop of sorbet/gelato was brought to the table with a candle Very disappointing evening."

  • "The service was great. Our meat was almost cooked to perfection (one steak was overcooked). The twice baked potato was delicious. Wish they served a bigger portion of vegetables. The mushrooms were fantastic. Dessert was very good. I really like the way Porterhouse cooks the steaks. You will not be disappointed if you dine here. The price is worth it. I've been here 3 times and have always left satisfied."

  • "I've dined out a fair amount and I found this to be a very poor experience. First of all we were seated 45 minutes late with reservations. The server took forever to help us. They overcharged me for the same drink twice. My porterhouse was over cooked at for $76 you think they would get it right. They ran out of baked potatoes and didn't tell us until they served us. The veg was a pitiful 3 pieces of rabe. Save your money; there are better steakhouses out there."

  • "The food was well prepared and flavorful. We had the lamb, fish and chicken. The lamb chops were very fatty. Hard to get half a chop worth of meat from the four. Really disappointing. The Brussel Sprout chips delicious. Had the beat salad which was small but good. The oysters were excellent and came with several types of dips. Overall, plenty of food for the price. Very fun single bottle wine list is worth the trip. We ate outdoors. The servers were so so. The waitress was nice to all tables but her support staff didn't crack a sweat and didn't bring requested items like water and bread. Left our table and several others feeling ignored. They were not that busy inside or out to leave diners like that. The host was rude."

  • "Took my family of 3 to San Mateo Porter House on Valentine. Ordered (2) cowboy porter house and one fillet. All were dry. One med rare was burnt. Ordered one seared and red inside ..inside was almost cooked and not rare. Fillet was dry. Bread is only served after the order is placed. Restaurant was busy and service was slow. Steaks took almost an hour. Did not look properly prepared. Waitress said cut into it and see. Was too embarrassed to return all three so we just ate them. Was definitely not worth $150 for (3). Spoiled Valentine for my wife and daughter. Normally go there for Valentine and other special occasions ...no more."

  • "We normally enjoy this restaurant and are willing to pay high prices for superior cuts of beef. However, my prime rib was stringy, underdone and very disappointing. I could only finish half of it. The advance preparation suggests they have a new chef or an older one who was getting too rushed in fulfilling orders. The side vegetables were overdone and tasteless, obviously prepared even before our arrival. We won't be going back here. I recommend Sundance in Palo Alto as an alternative."

  • "This is a small restaurant and a hidden gem. Very small menu but if you are looking for a good cut of steak then its perfect. We had a romantic Christmas dinner here and the meal was perfect. Small delicious amount of veggies and a small half of a potato came with the steak. The cut are 8oz to 20+oz cuts. Cooked perfectly. They have a private back room that is fairly large for groups. Small bar/lounge area with nice ambiance. We had reservations for 8:00 but did not get seated until almost 9.....due to it being Christmas I assume. They opened early for Christmas and had been "slammed" all day, so they were out of a lot of the starters and sides. I would go back though for the steak."

  • "Restaurant reviews had previously complained about being seated late and we were by 15 minutes. That was OK. We ordered dinner and a 1/2 bottle of wine. Took forever for the wine to come and our waitress told us sorry but they were having trouble locating it in "the vault." Huh? Either you have a wine on the menu or you don't. I ordered the prime rib and my wife ordered the bone in New York Steak. My prime rib came cooked fine but had huge amounts of fat on it. My wife ordered her steak medium well and it arrived on the rare side of medium rare, not even close, though there were numerous black marks on the steak.We sent it back, but when it came back had an acrid burnt taste. For what we got, prices were way too high and we won't be back."

  • "We went to Porterhouse for our wedding anniversary on December 24, 2013. I had the petite fillet mignon which was excellent and my husband enjoyed the prime rib. Unfortunately, the rest of the food was not that great. Our mashed potatoes tasted like glue and the salad dressing on the beet salad tasted like Kraft dressing and drenched the beets. Not exactly what we expected but the ambience was OK. We would probably try another steak house in the future."

  • "My wife and I dined on Christmas Eve with advance reservations. The restaurant was running about 1 hour late by the time we were seated(9:00 PM with 8:00 PM reservations). Hostess was sort of harried and rather rude when I inquired(pleasantly) to how long the wait would be. Basically she gave no estimate and walked off leaving an "I'll get to you when I get to you, now go away" attitude. Wait staff was pleasant, especially considering they had been going full out since noon. The food itself was good, but my cowboy streak was unevenly cooked. Parts were very rare and others were a proper medium rare, as requested. The meat was delicious, including the very rare parts. My wife had the New York and it was cooked perfectly."

We were put in the basement so we couldn't enjoy the nice dinning atmosphere. Otherwise, waiters and waitresses were nice and the food was ok. Pear salad was the best dish. The bread was very good - warm and fresh."

  • "We went to Porterhouse to celebrate Christmas. We were seated fairly promptly, but were left waiting for a long time before our server appeared. Finally, I had to ask one of the staff to please bring us water. She did so promptly, but we had still had to wait another 10 minutes for our server to appear. After that delay, the service was impeccable, the wine list was extensive and reasonably priced, and our steaks and other food items were cooked to perfection, very tasty, and also reasonably priced."
