Diner Reviews
  • "Great martini's, good wine list, service was perfect and the steak was done exactly how we ordered it. Couldn't ask for more than that."

  • "Our steaks were cooked correctly but the sides were boring/ bland."

  • "I loved the food- as usual but I was not quite happy with my table. Even though the restaurant was almost empty, there was a table in front of the window facing central park. I asked them if we could sit there (as we even wrote a note in our reservation and the hostess simply said she could not give that table to us.) The table remained empty the whole time. I am not sure if they always leave a table in case some VIP or celebrity comes over. Who knows?"

  • "Overall one of the best steakhouses I have ever been too. The waiter was very attentive and made great recommendations on the menu. Amazing service. I would definitely go back and recommend this to others"

  • "This is our 3rd visit since we stay in NY a few days for our anniversary each year ( We live on Long Island ) We are fortunate that out hotel is only a half block away and allows us a leisurely walk . The name of the restaurant is Porterhouse , so order one if you love steak. Otherwise , the menu has other items you will be more than satisfied with . The service is attentive but discreet and knowledgable."

  • "Wife wanted steak. Rated tops by Zag at for food. Both had the best cowboy Ribeye. Mushrooms on top. Yum. Blueberry pie for dessert probably best EVER. Expensive but worth it."

  • "Seated behind a wall with no view, so I asked for different table. Place was mostly empty and was given a worse choice. Restaurant has panoramic views of skyline, but I was told I didn't reserve a table with a view. I think it's a no-brainier and part of the dining experience. Been here twice previously. It was my go-to place for steak. This time Bone-in Rib-eye sub par and tough, sides not as good as previous times where presentation was important. Each side arrived in a small plain bowl. On last visit, a wide array of sautéed mushrooms arrived on a small platter; made them look rustic. This visit, no fungi variety. Salmon and veggies good, fabulous martinis! I may recommend for ambiance, but I'm hunting for a new fave steakhouse in NYC."

  • "We did the prix fixe during Restaurant Week. Food was excellent and plentiful, service was attentive, noise level reasonable(we booked a 2:00 lunch), a window table looking out to Central Park. Long, leisurely, and pleasurable."

  • "A good friend of mine from Ireland visited New York for the summer. I decided to take her to Porterhouse for a nice dinner just so we could spend some time alone together before she went back home. We had an 8pm reservation and the friendly hostess seated us promptly. We even got the window seat I requested when I made the reservation-beautiful views of Columbus Circle. Unfortunately I can't remember the waitress name but she was attentive and friendly the whole time. We had the porterhouse for2 medium rare and it was perfectly cooked, sliced, and seasoned. The bottom line here is that this was a very important night for me and I wanted to impress her. She loved the meal, we were both happy, everything went the way I wanted it to."

  • "In my opinion the steak was delicious, my husband did not think the same because he compares it with another places where we ate before. The restaurant should have more variety sides. We did not find anything special with the sides that we ordered."

  • "Excellent food, great service. Restaurant week menu very good, adequate portions and high quality ingredients."

  • "Took advantage of the Restaurant Week Menu.Appetizers of gazpacho and Caesar Salad were very good. The steak and frites were fine, although the meat was a little chewy, but tasty.Dessert was their flourless chocolate cake and it was to die for.So rich and tasty. The wine list is pricey as with most steakhouses, but a few selections are available under $50.Service was okay, but certainly nothing special.Their regular menu is for those on a company expense account, as most steaks alone are in the $50-60 range, and side dishes are $12.One gets the feeling that they have two levels of service here. One is for the average person, and one is for the celebrities who often dine here. Not really anything special in a town with so many steak restaurants."

  • "Not the best NY Strip I have had, and certainly not for the price. Service was great, great table with a view and great wine. the steak was really kind of tough. Two others got Rib eye and filet mignon and they were better"

  • "The only positive part of this dining experience was the hostess - she was sincere, smart and friendly. Went for lunch on a Sunday - lasted nearly 2 hours due to slow service (and, no it was not full). The presentation of the oysters and clams was really simple and the quality was not great. The salad was overwhemingly dressed; the steak frites was a bad piece of sirloin cooked horribly. The fries were good. The chocolate cake tasted like it came from a microwave. Bad tanqueray/tonic for $13.00 each. The bread was literally thrown onto the plates. We had to pour our Pellegrino ourselves. The wait staff, at least for my table was bland and bad. I still tipped over 20%, G-d knows why!!!"

  • "My party and I were immediately impressed with the ambiance of the restaurant. It was the type of place that made you feel on top of the world. The service was excellent, the wine was spectacular and the appetizers and salad were superb. However, being that this is a high-end steakhouse, we expected perfection with our main course. The french fries that accompanied the steak were great, but the steak was chewy and unsatisfying. This ruined the whole experience for us. The dessert could have been tastier as well. Had the latter end of our meal been better, we would return for a future visit."

  • "We ordered the NYC restaurant week lunch. The steak wasn't as great as steak for two but still very good."

  • "Our experience did not start out well from the start. Our conversation with the waiter started off with him asking us in a judgmental tone, "First time?" Yes, it was our first time at the restaurant, but really, what did that matter? We placed our order that included, sparkling water, 2 cocktails, 2 appetizers, porter house for 2 ($57 each) & creamed spinach. The waiter couldn't understand why we were not ordering a potato. He rattled off a few suggestions, we selected something else, (tots) & he said, "I told you to get that." What? We never saw him after dinner was served and was just handed off to another waiter w/ no explanation. Steak was mediocre, no "it" flavor that a pricey steak should have. Will not be back."

  • "We love Porter House for special occasions. The steaks are always excellent, fantastic salads and have the best root beer floats. We actually took their idea of root beer floats for our wedding (use local root beer, baileys, and great ice cream)."

  • "held their huge heavy menus on our laps for at least 15 minutes before order taken.... uncomfortable amd awkward waiter tryingto be upscale but mostly annoying would go again but they ahould improve this"

  • "Very romantic setting with a great scenic view. However, the food and the service of the restaurant were mediocre. Went for restaurant week and ordered a steak & salmon, both were okay nothing to wow about - had better at a less upscale restaurant. For dessert, we had the sorbet which was way too sour and the chocolate cake which was good but a little on the sweet side. The white cream on top on the chocolate was delicious though. The service of the waiters and busboys were disappointing (perhaps it was due to restaurant week and they are used to more upscale customers?) Water had to be asked to be filled when it was clearly empty BUT the table next to us had MULTIPLE automatic refills. Waiters were unfriendly. Sadly, not a good experience."

  • "The place was buzzing, however, despite this they accommodated the request we made when we booked online for a booth near the window. Great atmosphere, good wine, great food. We had had lunch here 2 days before for restaurant week and it was also very good. The service for our lunch meal was not as friendly and good as the service we got for dinner though. Will go back."

  • "Salads were good, not thrilled with the chilled gazpacho. Salmon and steak was cooked perfectly. Chicken was dry but the mash potatoes were great. Flour less chocolate cake very rich and sorbet was was nice and tart. Overall it was nice. Service was pretty slow even though the place wasn't busy."

  • "Restaurant Week introduced me to this establishment -- and I'm so glad it did! Food was great with more-than-ample portions. My steak was done to a perfect Medium Rare and had a wonderful flavor. Frittes were delicious even after they had cooled a bit. And the flourless chocolate cake with the scoop of cream (wow) on top was a dish to remember always. Our waiter was friendly, efficient, well-informed -- absolutely ideal. The only slight "miss" in the experience was that the waiter's assist ant was neither attentive nor friendly -- but that couldn't keep this from becoming a favorite place to dine."

  • " I have paid full price at other "name" steak places, wherein their steaks were 30% gristle and the sides way too salty (not mentioning names, but Food Network is the hint I will share). The soup of the day was Gazpacho & my husband smiled as he was eating it. He liked it a lot. I had the Caesar was good. We both had the steak frittes. Cooked to perfection for both of us, & we ordered a side of the creamed spinach with bacon. Put some of the bacon on the steak while eating it & it was yum. The frittes were not greasy, nice crunch &we liked. The dessert was choice of sorbet or flour less chocolate cake. We both got the cake& devoured it mixing it with the nice cream provided. For $25. this was not only a bargain, but a great meal."

  • "Came here for restaurant week lunch special with some friends. We all loved the food, service and the ambience. The starter tomato gazpacho soup was the best I've had. Steak was tender and flavorful. The fritas that came w/the steak was perfect. The chocolate dessert did not disappoint. Great view of Columbus Circle. Have already told friends, and plan to come back w/family."

  • "Went here with my boyfriend on a Friday night for his birthday. Read great reviews online, was expecting to be blown away. The food was absolutely average and I truly regret ever coming here. Our waitress was absolutely disinterested with a holier-than-thou attitude. I ordered the shrimp cocktail, which turned out to be utterly bland, accompanied by sauces equally as tasteless. We ordered mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus which was just that, boring and plain. My boyfriend ordered the sirloin, which was okay, and I guess my chopped salad was somewhat fresh, although missing the promised chickpeas. I can complain all I want, but for spending over $230 on a meal, I should be reliving happy memories instead of writing negative reviews."
