Diner Reviews
  • "The setting was upscale with lovely landscaping and fountains set amidst an upscale shopping center. In making reservations on open table for a week night, we wanted a slightly later time by 15 min. ; however, open table came back indicating none were available. Yet, upon our arrival and stay the restaurant was practically empty. Overall, the food was good, particularly the Mac and cheese dish which was outstanding, but nothing else stands out in our minds after the fact. Despite bread and butter plates with butter servers being on the table thus indicating bread would be served, we had to ask for it. Staff was attentive---sometimes just a tad too eager to remove dishes before we were through "

  • "This restraunt was highly recommended to us. We were very curious about how it was going to live up to our expectations. The whole dining experience was better than we expected. We will definitely be back."

  • "Second visit to Portland Grille and both have been excellent. I would comparably compare it to Port City Chophouse as the two best restaurants in Wilmington."

  • "Great hostess, very good service, excellent wine (Klinker Brick Zin), great spring roll appetizer, excellent salads, and super tuna. We'll be back!"

  • "Was looking for a new place to eat. I'm from a neighboring town. The dinner was excellent, steaks cooked to perfection, asparagus was to die for. Literally one of the best steaks I've ever ate at a restaurant."

  • "My wife and I have eaten here twice - first just ourselves and this time with another couple. The food and wine were excellent both times and the service was also excellent."

  • "Prime beef listed online did not have on menu. Vegetable portion skimpy. Ordered coffee with desert. Charged 3.50 a cup for Costco coffee. All in all the service was good but the meal did not meet my expectations considering the price."

  • "Wilmington has many wonderful restaurants but Port Land Grille has consistently been one of our favorites over the years. We have always been met by a friendly, competent and professional staff and the food is sublime. They use only the freshest, ethically harvested ingredients that are expertly prepared."

  • "Had high hopes based on the menu but nothing really lived up to the prices. Husband started out ticked because our red wine was served in smaller white wine glasses and the pour was light. Spiced nuts tasted like they could have been poured from a can. Italian chopped salad was brought out after our entrees, clearly forgotten - waiter said something about maybe putting the tickets in in the wrong order. Asked what one of the peppers in the salad was and he did not know. Entrees (halibut special and steak) were ok but neither was memorable. Dessert (coconut cake) was mealy and dry - took it to go as waiter said it would be better at room temp - ended up in the trash. Usually give restaurants two tries but not sure we will bother to return."

  • "Can only speak for the duck breast. While perfectly cooked as requested (rare), it seems to me that too many flavors detract from the overall dish. My partner enjoyed his steak, however. The bread is excellent. The setting is beautiful."

  • "We missed our meal at Port Land Grille on Valentines Day so this was the make-up dinner. As usual the food, service, and environment was wonderful. We go there on special occasions since it is such a special place here in Wilmington."

  • "We had not been to Port Land Grill in some time - too many options in Wilmington. Drinks, apps and wine selection very good. There were two beet salad options on the menu and we ordered the roasted beets but they tasted like pickled beets. Chicken dish was average at best. Service was fine but not exceptional. Two of 4 diners are real foodies with lots of home culinary experience with Cooks Magazine recipes etc,, herb gardens and made from scratch specialties and they were not overly impressed. (21 Feb)"

  • "There are other restaurants in town that will serve you just as good of food for way less money. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED it, I just think you could go to Rx and get some super good food for a LOT less."

  • "First-time diner at PLG; will be back, but likely a special occasion dinner. It's pricey, but you get what you pay for. Plus I enjoyed my HUGE Cowboy steak for dinner the following night! A great place for multiple couples for there is lots of conversation going on. Can't really comment on being a quiet romantic kinda place for it was Valentine's weekend, so it was action-packed! Overall, the dining experience did live up to it's expectations!"

  • "I never got a chance to eat here because my wife and I were greeted with a 40 minute wait after our reservation time. The hostess seemed as though she couldn't care less about us or that we had to wait around. We attempted to get an estimated time that we would be seated but were not given any information. After finally being seated We were informed that they were out of both entrees that we wanted to order. At this time we decided to call it and go take our business elsewhere."

  • "Our third time dining here and probably our last. Crab claws priced per claw $4, but the problem is that they were stale and no taste. What a waste. Smoked salmon tartar didn't taste smoked and was pale-looking and shaped into a can resembling a cat food cylinder. Steaks were not cooked to order (for the third time). It has great potential because of the location and it really does have an interesting looking menu, but the food is not great. Food and preparation needs to improve, or downgrade themselves and not try to keep up with the really good restaurants."

  • "When my wife and I come to visit her mother, this is one restaurant we always visit. We started with sandal and the lobster sliders. My wife and I had the grouper and her mother had the scallops. Everything was excellent. Our server provided excellent service mad fantastic wine recommendations that fit perfectly with our taste and the food. Portland Grill is at the top of our resturant list in Wilmington. We will be back."

  • "Port Land Grille is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in Wilmington. So my wife and I thought it would be a great choice for our New Year's dinner. We were held a little late by my niece and her boyfriend visiting us in the bar but the hostess was extremely accommodating. My wife quickly decided on grouper but I was undecided. At the waitress' recommendation I went with the scallops and they were fantastic. The only disappointment was we were a 2 top placed in the back dining room with a bunch of other tables with multiples. We would have preferred the main dining room. Still, we had a wonderful dinner as we always do at Port Land Grill!"

  • "Had a reservation for 6:15 arrived right on time and were seated immediately. Drinks (wine) and an appetizer and entrees were ordered. The appetizer didn't arrive for 20 minutes. No bread was served and entrees didn't arrive for 45 minutes after we had finished the appetizer. I appreciate a romantic dinner but 45 minutes between appetizer and entree is just too long. Coffee was ordered (a mistake) and we ordered dessert - coffee arrived but dessert didn't arrive for 15 minutes, by which time we had finished our coffee - no refill was offered. We left ASAP 8:30 PM. 2 hours and 15 minutes is too long. At no time was every table in use and when we left there were 15-20 people waiting to be seated. We'll avoid this place."

  • "I've been to this restaurant on several occasions and sometimes forget about it. The wine list is impressive. My only complaint (if you can call it that) is that I sometimes find the menu to be overwhelming. There are a lot of options and I generally only like to choose from 4 or 5. This is a place you would normally find in a large city. Food is always excellent. It's pricey but you get what you pay for. Make sure to get reservations."

  • "I've eaten here twice, the first time both the food and the service was exceptional... the second time-- not so much. My waiter was not even slightly friendly and he seemed irritated the entire time. I also felt like compared to the previous meal the portions were smaller, and they had taken a few shortcuts with the ingredients which were notable and greatly reduced the experience. Maybe it was a busy night-- who knows? I will try it again."

  • "We spent another New Years Eve here. They had full menu, great service, nice pace to the meal, not hurried. The server did a smooth job even though we could see she was busy with about four other tables. Each course was prepared and presented well. The beet salad was excellent."

  • "Raw oysters good, simple grilled grouper good (it didn't really need the roast red pepper puree the risotto and sauted spinach were great... service... disdain doesn't cut it with me... and I realized after I left that I had been overcharged on the wine. Nice dinner, no need to go back."

  • "Food is amazing. Most likely the best in Wilmington. You have to have the crab cake small plate. For entrees I had the grouper and my wife had the aged beef tender loin. Both were absolutely delicious. Had the coconut cake for dessert. It was enough for three people and also delicious. You can not go wrong at the Port Land Grille."

  • "Very fine dining. My vote for the best restaurant in the Wilmington area. Very good presentation and a diverse and creative menu. Also the portions a quite generous . This is a restaurant that would indeed make it in New York City. Only complaint is that the waiter was not even remotely engaging. No greeting, no smile and somewhat robotic."

  • "Wife and I wanted to try someplace new. When we arrived, the noise level was off the charts. There was a large birthday party in the bar, and upon receiving some complaints, the restaurant offered this group their own private room at no charge. The group, apparently from Wrightsville Beach, was offended by the offer (just can't please some folks) and left. At once, the noise level was well within acceptable limits. The food was outstanding, and on par with many costlier establishments. We will be going back."

  • "We go to this establishment on a regular basis and are always pleased with the experience. The food, wine and service are always extremely good and this night was no different. We recommend this restaurant as one of the top places within Wilmington ."

  • "The service is great, decor and tables very nice - but the food is what takes center stage here. There is also a shared plate and just from the grill option for the smaller appetite and budget. My sirloin was excellent and prepared perfectly with homemade grits and delicious spinach. I even opted for the $5.00 horseradish sauce however it wasn't needed. My wife enjoyed the free range chicken and especially loved the barbeque sauce. Please don't miss their coconut cake - it is their signature dessert! (hint, hint) Please try this gem for a special occasion and I believe it will be your new favorite, too!"
