Diner Reviews
  • "Port Land Grill always serves good food and has a wonderful wait staff. One of our favorite go-to spots."

  • "Port Land Grille has become a regular visit for us for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Some of the entrees are pricey, but there are reasonable alternatives as well. The food has a southern flair, but is otherwise a good steakhouse along with superior seafood. I recommend highly."

  • "We love this restaurant. Our waitress Alli is wonderful. All the food is presented and cooked beautifully."

  • "We were celebrating a special occasion and were put in a room with a large party which was very loud. There were plenty of tables so we were perplexed at why they would seat us there. When you're spending $160 for dinner, you tend to have high expectations. We asked to be moved and they accomodated us. The food was excellent as always. Our parents had called ahead and requested that they buy us drinks, which never happened. The drinks were on our check. I just think it was an off-night for them, as this is a very quality restaurant."

  • "Sadly, my husband and I found just ok food at this restaurant. We tried the smoked salmon tartar, vichyssoise, and seared scallops with seafood risotto, spinach and a tomato sauce. There were no specials, and our waitress constantly suggested that we order more food, despite the already large portions. It was surprising to me that during the height of soft shelled crab season, those weren't on the menu. Also, one of the three fish entrees wasn't available. For real farm to table cooking, try Chef and the Farmer in Kinston. In Wilmington, there are other, better choices, including Catch on Market St., Brasserie du Soleil in the same outdoor mall as Portland Grill, or Bento Box in the Forum."

  • "Very nice, quality food, good atmosphere good servers!"

  • "Incredibly impressed with our server! Food at this restaurant is very good-but not outstanding. There is something to please almost any palate which makes it a good choice for groups. Food presentation could be improved."

  • "We wanted to eat inside. However, there was a terrible smell when you entered the restaurant and it permeated throughout inside. We sat outside which was really nice. The steaks were very tough which was a surprise. They should not have been that tough for the price paid. Waiter was attentive."

  • "We had heard mixed reviews on this restaurant, but decided to try it anyway for my husband's 40th birthday. The hostess was awesome and very helpful, but the server was sub-par. The food is pricey so the mind set is that you're going to get a fabulous meal, but that is not the case. The food was not impressive. There are far better restaurants in the area and for less money along with much better service. We had a party of 8 and the review is across the board. We all had different things and no one was impressed. We will not return. "

  • "We always enjoy this restaurant. Food, service outstanding. We sat at table 10,the waiter was could not have been better!!! The house wine was a bit pricey$11.00 a glass."

  • "We decided to have mothers birthday here for the quiet atmosphere. It was fine and the food was just ok. I ordered the Italian salad and it was warm. The lobster sliders were disappointing and dry. We also delivered a cake for the celebration and no one remembered to bring it to the table. The waiters tried to give us menus for desert. The experience was disappointing in tes if the food and the prices and the attention to detail. "

  • "Reserved via open table but although I reworked reservation to be for one hostess did not see it or let open table know and I was seated in empty bar area. Not the best ambiance. "

  • "Very much enjoyed the food. At our table we shared the salmon, grouper and duck. Every dish had a perfect balance of flavors. Definitely get the coconut cake but you only need one for a table of 4. Good wine list too. Our server was very attentive. Perfect evening."

  • "This was our second dinner at Port Land Grille, about two years apart, on infrequent visits to Wilmington. Both times we had excellent, flavorful meals, beautifully presented and enjoyed a wonderful array of wine selections; even the wines by the glass are worthwhile. It's a lively place with a small, seemingly always crowded bar. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. This restaurant is worth going out of one's way for."

  • "We chose Port Land Grille for our Graduation Dinner and they were very accomodating even though 2 members of our party were running significantly late. The menu was great, food superb, and we could not have asked for better service. I just wish this restaurant were in the town I live, I would be a regular. "

  • "The ambiance is lovely. The service was good. The shrimp were frozen and tough. The crab was overcooked, extremely salty, and over seasoned. The meatballs were dry, over cooked, and uninspired. The wine was very poor, even after we sent it back and tried something else. In short, the meal was Inedible."

  • "Another wonderful dinner at PLG. The crab cakes were perfect and the steak was wonderful. The service as was impeccable as always. "

  • "My son and I had dinner here and the ambience is very nice. All the wait staff where white jackets and lots of candle light. The food was just ok, I had halibut and he had duck and we shared a crab mac and cheese app. and a oreo cheesecake for dessert. Everything we had was good, just average, nothing to make it memorable. We have had some amazing meals lately at other restaurants and this one just didn't add up. I think you could get the same thing elsewhere for less money."

  • "We have been dining at Port Land Grille for about 6 years now. This is our favorite date night restaurant. We love the little things the wait staff does to make our night special. The food is always awesome and we really enjoy the local selection plus the seasonal meats offered. "

  • "Our fourth time was again a great experience. Next time we will share the soup. It was very good but too filling for one person. I wasn't able to finish my salmon along with the bottle of wine split between us, so the salmon had to lose out. "

  • "Food was reallyyyy good. Service was great. Food took about an hour to come out... little long. Restaurant is nice setting. White table cloths. Will spend about $50 per.person without alcohol. My dad has severe food allergies and they were very accomadating. "

  • "Family from VA & MI were visiting Wilmington wondering where to have dinner on our last night together...something special. We have already done the waterfront thing and weren't impressed. Enter our Open Table Android App! Everything was there in print, location, menu, etc. to make an intelligent decision so we loaded up the car. Just before arriving, we noted that it was located in a shopping center...oh, damn! Dutifully following our GPS, we arrived at a private resort night spot on the very back of the center that could not have been any more inviting. our greeting was warm, the food impeccable, our wait-staff the best ever and do I ever hate what those desserts did to our collective BMI readings! It's a five-star restaurant! GO!"

  • "Anne is the owner of this long time Wilmington restaurant. I went with my two teenage grandchildren becasue of the Open Table site. It was not a good experience. I took the time the next morning to write to the owner about what I considered a poor experience and she immediately called to apologize and to offer me either a gift certificate or a generous credit. I was charmed and delighted. I will return. The restaurant was very busy and it was obvious that many of the guests at the restaurant were locals and dined there often. I felt our experience was an aberration and am more than willing to give them another chance, expecially after the classy response of the owner."

  • "Dining on a Wednesday evening, we were disappointed to be told after we had studied the menu that several of the fish items were not available. The reason given by the waitress was that they had had a very busy weekend previously. At the very least, the restaurant should make sure that patrons are told immediately what is no longer available. Best case scenario would be that they restock items on a more regular basis. We were certainly able to purchase swordfish from the local fish market the next day so it was certainly available."

  • "The setting was upscale with lovely landscaping and fountains set amidst an upscale shopping center. In making reservations on open table for a week night, we wanted a slightly later time by 15 min. ; however, open table came back indicating none were available. Yet, upon our arrival and stay the restaurant was practically empty. Overall, the food was good, particularly the Mac and cheese dish which was outstanding, but nothing else stands out in our minds after the fact. Despite bread and butter plates with butter servers being on the table thus indicating bread would be served, we had to ask for it. Staff was attentive---sometimes just a tad too eager to remove dishes before we were through "

  • "Second visit to Portland Grille and both have been excellent. I would comparably compare it to Port City Chophouse as the two best restaurants in Wilmington."

  • "Was looking for a new place to eat. I'm from a neighboring town. The dinner was excellent, steaks cooked to perfection, asparagus was to die for. Literally one of the best steaks I've ever ate at a restaurant."

  • "My wife and I have eaten here twice - first just ourselves and this time with another couple. The food and wine were excellent both times and the service was also excellent."

  • "Prime beef listed online did not have on menu. Vegetable portion skimpy. Ordered coffee with desert. Charged 3.50 a cup for Costco coffee. All in all the service was good but the meal did not meet my expectations considering the price."

  • "Wilmington has many wonderful restaurants but Port Land Grille has consistently been one of our favorites over the years. We have always been met by a friendly, competent and professional staff and the food is sublime. They use only the freshest, ethically harvested ingredients that are expertly prepared."

  • "Had high hopes based on the menu but nothing really lived up to the prices. Husband started out ticked because our red wine was served in smaller white wine glasses and the pour was light. Spiced nuts tasted like they could have been poured from a can. Italian chopped salad was brought out after our entrees, clearly forgotten - waiter said something about maybe putting the tickets in in the wrong order. Asked what one of the peppers in the salad was and he did not know. Entrees (halibut special and steak) were ok but neither was memorable. Dessert (coconut cake) was mealy and dry - took it to go as waiter said it would be better at room temp - ended up in the trash. Usually give restaurants two tries but not sure we will bother to return."

  • "Can only speak for the duck breast. While perfectly cooked as requested (rare), it seems to me that too many flavors detract from the overall dish. My partner enjoyed his steak, however. The bread is excellent. The setting is beautiful."

  • "We missed our meal at Port Land Grille on Valentines Day so this was the make-up dinner. As usual the food, service, and environment was wonderful. We go there on special occasions since it is such a special place here in Wilmington."

  • "We had not been to Port Land Grill in some time - too many options in Wilmington. Drinks, apps and wine selection very good. There were two beet salad options on the menu and we ordered the roasted beets but they tasted like pickled beets. Chicken dish was average at best. Service was fine but not exceptional. Two of 4 diners are real foodies with lots of home culinary experience with Cooks Magazine recipes etc,, herb gardens and made from scratch specialties and they were not overly impressed. (21 Feb)"

  • "There are other restaurants in town that will serve you just as good of food for way less money. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED it, I just think you could go to Rx and get some super good food for a LOT less."

  • "First-time diner at PLG; will be back, but likely a special occasion dinner. It's pricey, but you get what you pay for. Plus I enjoyed my HUGE Cowboy steak for dinner the following night! A great place for multiple couples for there is lots of conversation going on. Can't really comment on being a quiet romantic kinda place for it was Valentine's weekend, so it was action-packed! Overall, the dining experience did live up to it's expectations!"
