Diner Reviews
  • "We live in the neighborhood and eat at Porcini's often. The food is always good but tonight it was outstanding! My friend ordered the sea bass special and I ordered the mussels special both were excellent. We hardly ever order dessert but this evening we had a canoli that had the crunchiest, tastiest shell ever! The inside was good but the shell, wow. This is not a dessert Porcini's has had in the past so we had to tell the owner how much we loved it. The staff ALWAYS makes you feel welcomed! "

  • "Small inside but the service and food was great! I would go back again"

  • "Porcini is a very small Phily BYOB. When the restuarant is full it feels a little claustrophobic. However, the food is delicious and the staff is friendly. The service was great. I would definitely recommend Porcini."

  • "As usual, food was incredible! Been dining at Porcinis for 5 years...consistently delicious. Steve and David always make you feel at home!!!"

  • "This is our second visit. The food is always excellent. We highly recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere is energetic. It is BYOB."

  • "We have been patrons of Porcini since it opened. The food is excellent, the prices reasonable, the service friendly and competent, and the owners (or I believe them to be the owners) very friendly and accommodating. They always remember us, and our particular tastes."

  • "Our dinner and service here was outstanding. Yes, if you read the reviews it is very small and cozy. So don't go if you want to spread out. The food was delicious from the stuffed artichoke to a sea bass special. The owner and chef come out to greet you and make sure everything is fine. We loved this restrauant and will certainly return!"

  • "The restaurant was well-decorated, but very tiny, crowded and SO VERY LOUD. There was a relaxed, semi-casual feel and everyone was very informal. We ordered the assagio hot and cold appetizer sampler, which was delicious. We ordered the beef short ribs over risotto, which we asked if it had bones and the server said yes but it is very tender so it would not be a problem, however there were no bones in this dish. This dish was very tasty and well-prepared (and huge!) We also ordered gnocchi with Italian sausage medallions. The gnocchi tasted like it may have been store bought frozen, and the sausage was a bit too salty, but the sauce was great. The service was very slow but it was difficult to navigate in such a crowded place."

  • "Always an excellent meal. Expect cramped quarters and go with it."

  • "The food is excellent, service is great! But the noise is almost overwhelming. Maybe a week night would be less noisy."

  • "What a mess! The maitre 'd didn't even know that we had reservations. We were seated across from a table of 5 very loud girls, one of whom was sitting in the aisle, less than 4 inches from one of our party, making the aisle almost impassable. My friend had peoples' butts in her face through the entire meal as they squeezed through the aisle. My short ribs were full of shards of sharp bones that I had to keep trying to remove from my mouth discreetly. But the kicker was the noise level, which was louder than any restaurant we've ever been in, EVER. We skipped dessert so that we could get outside and get away from the almost-screaming noise. Decent food, but how can we go back to such a mess of a place? Maybe on a weekday it's quieter."

  • "Porcini. Simply divine. You will be in close quarters but once you get used to it and have a bite of the food, you will be transported to another world. The food was outstanding! We ordered garlic bread and you would think, what's the big deal? Try it, you won't be sorry. The fresh bread was slightly grilled and had the perfect blend of garlic, cheese and olive oil. I ordered a special the night we dined that had the Bolognese on it, and it was remarkable. Not too heavy and the perfect flavor, right amount of meat. I plan to return to try the Fettuccine Bolognese. My husband had the Chicken Milanese and it was fantastic. So flavorful and perfectly presented. Make a reservation if you plan to go, it was packed. Worth the trip!"

  • "The restaurant is small but it was way too crowded with tables. The food was serviceable but not anything to justify such a cramped dining experience. As for the service, no I do not want to put my coat on the floor and yes I would like you to change the utensils after I have used them. Does anyone want to eat their next course with a knife covered in olive oil from their last course?"

  • "What an experience! Some of the friendliest people on earth own and operate this restaurant...and can the Chef, Stefano, cook !! Absolutely authentic recipes and ingredients...Stefano says his background is Siciliano...but he can cook ANY of Italy's regions best recipes...I know...my husband and I, along with our good friend, sampled some of what he does...just the most satisfying dinner we've had in quite some time. DO NOT MISS the "Sicilian Donut", otherwise known as Zeppole (sic) for dessert...the BEST. PORCINI is BYOB.,I like that, the ambience is intimate, I like that too...it's in my neighborhood - don't know WHY I hadn't found it until now - I intend to make it my Neighborhood Haunt...Porcini is a MUST if you're serious about food..."

  • "Porcini is a good, not great, Italian restaurant. Try to get seated upstairs, as there are windows and generally feels less cramped. Service was nice."

  • "This is my second dining experience at Porcini and, once again, I was not let down. Everything was incredible. From my veal medallions to my fiance`'s short rib ravioli, nothing disappointed! Just as a little help for the dessert lovers though... if it's available, please try the chocolate mousse torte. It was incredible! Much thanks to Steven and David! So nice to dine here again!"

  • "Went for Valentine's Day dinner and the good was very good, but it would have been nice if we had the entire menu and not a "shortened" menu."

  • "Where to start - with the screaming and yelling that could be heard from the kitchen, cranky waiter, dirty wine glasses. Or the quite possibly the worst food quality in the city with dozens of world class Italian restaurants. None of the ingredients were fresh, the seafood not only clearly the frozen variety, but felt it had been frozen for centuries. Pasta was way overcooked and mushy. The sauce not better than the canned variety. Very disappointing, to say the least..."

  • "We were visiting Philadelphia (from NY, DC, and KC) to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday. The maître d' and our server were fun, and the chef came out twice to speak to us...once to personally welcome my mother and again to bring out dessert, with a candle (which prompted the entire restaurant to sing happy birthday.) We were able to bring some fantastic wine to this cozy BYOB, and the meal was memorable... Between the five of us, we ordered almost everything on the menu and nothing disappointed. It was a perfect evening."

  • "Small BYO? Friendly staff and service. Took out of town people who enjoy conversation, good Italian food and drinking wine of their own selection. Not for foodies, but people who want to enjoy a night out."

  • "This is a family owned Italian BYOB. The 2 brothers came out and introduced themselves during dinner service. They have the BEST garlic bread I have ever tasted in my life! Excellent, fresh food. Vibrant ambiance- we've been back many times!"

  • "Porcini is probably the best Italian restaurant we ever been in Philadelphia. The food is superb and it taste different with the real Italian flavor. There are two brothers handling the place: Steve and David, both are very friendly people. The chef, Steve, many times helps serving the food they both do it in a very funny and friendly way. I had octopus and noquis and my wife had "milanesas" a delight breaded chicken with a unforgettable taste. Do not forget the wine !!! very important if you are having pasta or any other Italian food. Make sure you make reservations, particularly on Saturday, otherwise you will have NO luck, because Porcini is very but very small."

  • "We arrived for a 6:30 reservation on Sat. We were seated promptly. Space is limited, so it was a tight fit. I do not know if the gentleman was the maitre"d or the owner, but he rushed us throughout the rest of the evening. The waitress asked to take our order, and we told her we had not even had a chance to read the menu. She was very polite. Two minutes later, the maitre'd(?) came to our table to tell the waitress we were ready to order, even though we were not! We barely got though one course when plates were removed and the next course served. We did not order coffee or dessert, but we were finishing our bottle of wine, when our coats arrived! Mind you, it was not even 8:00, we had been there just over an hour. We will never return!"

  • "We were driving into the city for the day and I searched for restaurants near our destination. I found Porcini, made a reservation, and am so glad I did. Parking in the garage across the street was very convenient, the staff was very nice and the food was great! The restaurant is small and a little tight, but very charming. Make a reservation as we saw numerous people trying to get a table who had to be turned away. Also liked that it's a BYOB, making the cost of eating out more reasonable. We will definitely be recommending Porcini to friends!"

  • "Would never go back on a weekend. Seated 30 minutes late for ouir reservation and there is no where to wait. Seats are so close together, you feel like you are eating with the people at the tables next to you. Food was good, so perhaps I would try to go again on a weekday night"

  • "The appetizers were fine but had much less food than anticipated. The octopus was very tasty and cooked very well. The veal entree was delicious, although the portion was again small. The ravioli was a bit heavy but ok. I thought the fettuccine was alright, but friends said it was great. We were a party of 4 with 3 appetizers & 4 entrees. Bill was ~$36/person. Slightly more than anticipated, but about avg. It's a bit crowded. I got bumped by passing wait staff a number of times. Overall, a bit cramped, with slightly above average food/prices and below average portions. I'm admittedly surprised at the high ratings this place has received. I might return at some point, mainly because it's so close, but it's not near the top of my list."
