  • "Wonderful dinner last Saturday night. No problem getting a reservation 10 days ahead. Food was delicious - as always. We ordered a variety of dishes, starting with the best Caesar Salad around and chilled Cantaloupe Soup. Dinner included Chicken Cooked Under a Brick (including a side dish substitution with no issue), Pesto Ravioli, Fettuccine with Clams & Shrimp and Baked Penne with Sausage & Mushrooms. Everyone loved their entrees. One thing was off - the Pesto Ravioli portion was oddly small for Pop's. I've ordered ravioli there many times and often taken some home but this time it was an appetizer portion at best. Too bad because it was just wonderful! The restaurant was, as usual, lively and friendly. Overall, a great evening."

  • "I hate to say it, but Pops has poor service. We've been multiple times and always say "well maybe our server is having a bad day?" But after consistently bad service, we can no longer make excuses for them. Pops is very slow and the server will often neglect you for a long period of time (30 mins while you are out of water). Anytime we substitute a side, it comes out wrong and we have to kindly send the dish back and wait 15 mins. Our waiter didn't come by the table after our food was delivered by the kitchen, so we had to ask another server to help us by correcting the order, filling our glasses, and bringing more bread. Our server still did not come by till we had finished eating, and did not apologize."

Menu was very appealing, food was delicious, service was excellent, dining experience was very satisfying and pleasurable. I am happy to spread the word among the ADF community. Price range was on the up-scale side, but all in all a wonderful place."

We had a new server who did her best and really provided pretty good service. I have been to Pop's three times now and absolutely enjoyed it every time. Would definitely recommend."

  • "The food was excellent! Excellent atmosphere. The hostess tried to put us in a crummy seat - there were very few people in the restaurant. I was upset and ready to leave. Then I saw her seat another couple in a crummy space they asked to move to a comfortable table. I understand if the restaurant is full and you are squeezing guests to be seated. When the restaurant isn't half full - why would you do this? She placed us and the other couple, In very undesirable tables, barely enough space to put plates, silverware, much less a glass and certainly not food."

  • "The food was pretty good, it it was all rather oily (varied antipasto tray and pepperoni pizza) and the mussels were "squishier" that I'd like. I might be back, but it's not one of my top spots in downtown Durham. I also wish the dipping oil were flavoured with some vinegar and herbs."

  • "My wife and I went to Pop's when we had to be in Durham on a Friday evening, and though I had not been to the new location or the old for a long time, I was not disappointed. I had the bowl of mussels, they were awesome, you will need extra bread to sop up the tomato garlic broth. For dinner I had the scallop risotto and that was great too."

  • "Our server was fantastic. She had been there for years and knew her stuff. When we needed something and she wasn't around, another waiter was pleased to help us and rushed us what we requested. I really enjoyed pops. The food was a bargain for how delicious it was, and I don't say that lightly. I'll be going back, for sure!"

  • "I wanted to love Pops, and there were things that I did enjoy. Especially the Brick on a Chicken dish, which was good, although very heavy. I also enjoyed the gorgeous paintings on the walls, the fantastic thought that went into the layout of the open air kitchen and the abundant light that permeated each room. But too often Pops was two steps behind great. The service was lack luster. We rarely saw our server, and we came early, the dining room was not yet busy. The food was very heavy on butter, oils and cream. I would have preferred a lighter touch. I would come back, but probably stick to pizza with friends. "

  • "We've dined at Pop's several times but this last time we had a very disappointing visit. With so many great restaurant choices in the area, it's doubtful that we will return. Our food and bar beverages were extremely slow in coming. Once the food did arrive, it was lukewarm at best and re-orders from the bar never made it to the table. The manager did comp our meal, which was nice, but our dining experience had already been compromised."

  • "After many years of patronizing Pops, we have decided we may be at the end of it. The food was very salty - all of the dishes we had. We had the fish of the day, the vegetable tenderloin soup, and the crab stuffed manicotti. We also ordered the antipasto plate, which used to be vegetarian. The antipasto plate was mediocre at best. The wait staff stopped checking in on us after we got our food, not asking if we wanted more bread or how the food was. I had taken clients there a month ago for lunch and had a similar experience. I was hoping that was a fluke and gave it another shot for my daughter's birthday. For the price, there are many other restaurants in Durham that we will be visiting from now on."

The food was very well cooked but lacked seasonings. Good décor & atmosphere, decent prices. The menu is very small. We would come back if the food was better seasoned and if the menu has more dishes to choose from."

  • "We love Pop's, especially the bar seats near the window, but have noticed that the food is much better on Sundays than it is on Fridays--is there a different cook? We've noticed this time and time again (haven't checked out the other days). Service is always excellent. We've also noticed that the two "daily" lasagnas are always the same. This is one of our favorite places (at least on Sundays) but perhaps they should try to pay more attention to variety and consistency. We are also frustrated with the wine descriptions, which focus on the wine-makers, not the wines--interesting but not helpful in picking what to drink! Luckily, the waiters are always willing to offer help with wine selection and to offer tastes."

  • "Although I have lived just a block from Pop's for 2+ months, I had yet to patronize it until mid-April. Mistake on my part to wait that long, & smart move by me to select it for my birthday dinner with family members! The setting was lively (even just after 6pm), without being too loud to enjoy table conversations. The wait service was sufficiently attentive - not too overly attentive, but not MIA either (which is the balance I want). And the food was excellent (& reasonably priced). My striped bass, for ex., had great flavor & was cooked just right. Desserts also received thumbs-up. So, a very positive experience all around. I'll definitely return, either for a meal &/or to relax at the bar that overlooks Main Street."
