Diner Reviews
  • "Overall, the dining experience was excellent! The ribeye steak was savory delicious. I can't wait for the summer season to have okra with the steak."

  • "Our meal was scrumptious from stem to stern. Nicely converted industrial setting with local art on the walls."

  • "We had a party of 5 and had wonderful time. Our server was funny, attentive, not obtrusive, and an excellent photographer! The food was outstanding - 4 ordered the pan-seared scallops, and I think our 5th wished that she had too. Will definitely go back."

  • "We ordered mussels for appetizer and it was pretty good, the best part of the meal. We ordered pan-seared flounder with fingerling potatoes and brussel sprouts, as well as the sausage lasagna. The food was very well cooked but lacked seasonings. Good décor & atmosphere, decent prices. The menu is very small. We would come back if the food was better seasoned and if the menu has more dishes to choose from."

  • "Use to eat there all the time at the old location. This was the first time at the new location, went downhill significantly or we had a bad night there. We brought people from out of town and in the end we felt like it was a disappointing choice."

  • "All was what I expected in terms of food and noise except that the service was bad. We had to ask for oil for bread and was delayed so much for desert that we decided to forgo it."

  • "We were looking for something good, fast, and within walking distance of DPAC for our show. Pop's had it all. We'd highly recommend it."

  • "Although I have lived just a block from Pop's for 2+ months, I had yet to patronize it until mid-April. Mistake on my part to wait that long, & smart move by me to select it for my birthday dinner with family members! The setting was lively (even just after 6pm), without being too loud to enjoy table conversations. The wait service was sufficiently attentive - not too overly attentive, but not MIA either (which is the balance I want). And the food was excellent (& reasonably priced). My striped bass, for ex., had great flavor & was cooked just right. Desserts also received thumbs-up. So, a very positive experience all around. I'll definitely return, either for a meal &/or to relax at the bar that overlooks Main Street."

  • "This is not a fancy restaurant, but it is wonderful."

  • "Ate there on a Friday in April. Had one legitimate fish dish on menu - red snapper. We were told they replaced it with local NC wild bass. Not thoughtful for a Friday in lent. Dish was tasteless. Wife got shrimp scampi listed on menu as including capers and egg noodles. Served without the capers. Also tasteless. Ordered bottle of white wine. Served to us warm with no chill at all. I told waiter it was warm before he poured the glasses. He then proceeded to fill our glasses to the brim and offer to chill the rest. Amateurish. Asked for espresso after dinner. Told they were out of espresso so only drip regular coffee. Have been there several times with slightly better outcomes. This trip was awful on every level."

  • "The wait staff was very helpful in selecting wine and beer. The manager was very responsive with a delay in one of the meals in our order of 4, and reciprocated accordingly. Have dined here several times and will definitely go back. We took new comers and they said that they would also dine there again."

  • "We went at 6 pm on a Saturday. Our section had 2 large parties and several 2 tops being served by one waiter. There. Was no one to help, with water or bread, we sat a long time before being approached by said overworked waiter. He was tErribly rushed, apologized every time he came to table and always had other tables orders in his hands when he came to drop off our request whether it be more wine or water. Food was fair. Won't be back, too many other great choices in Durham."

  • "We had an awesome spring time date night at Pop's. We sat outside on their patio and with the Durham sky line lite up it made for a wonderful evening. The food and wine were to die for and our server provided us with outstanding suggestions & service! Look forward to heading back soon~"

  • "This was our second visit and we really enjoyed the food. The pasta is excellent. My only complaint is that the Lasagna dishes usually are just warm and not piping hot."

  • "Sat by the huge windows, overlooking the warehouses of West Durham. Loved the view, the light and the overall feel of the bar area. Would definitely prefer the few high top tables in the bar over the tables in the dining room. Had an amazing dinner. The food was creative, well prepared and artfully presented. The server was very attentive without being overbearing. Not rushed at all. Will definitely return."

  • "Pop's Durham used to be a foodie find, but not any more. The special for the evening was overly salty, and the wood fired pizza tasted like an over-sized pita bread from the supermarket warmed up (soft, no flavor nor wood fire flare) served with an ordinary sauce and bland basil. The only two redeeming factors were the cheese was fresh- and oh, the restaurant was close to the Baldwin Theater."

  • "Excellent food and service. The staff was attentive and friendly. Food was delicious and my daughter loved the Tiramisu! We will definitely be back when we return to Durham!"

  • "My favorite place I. Downtown Durham never diss appoints me! Excellent as always. Only wish other patrons dining were aware of how loud their voices were."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Great food and big portions! If you like mussels, you will love these mussels. The pasta was also delicious. There is plenty more to try. If you haven't been yet, you should definitely go!"

  • "Very nice waiter, prices reasonable but food was mostly average. Calamari was respectable. Starter salad was limp and uninspired. Of two pizzas and vegetarian lasagna special, only the Pop's special pizza was good, others ok. And the wine advertised as a barbera wasn't. Oh well, there are so many great new options in Durham to move on to."

  • "We had a pleasant time at Pop's and will most likely return, but it wasn't their best performance. We came early and our server was pleasant, but he seemed overwhelmed, not organized, and not totally engaged. We had to remind him of simple things that he had previously indicated he would provide (e.g., bread, steak knife, etc.). The food was average. The pork chop overcooked and the tuna average. The salad and side dishes were very good. Other servers kept our water glasses full. I think it was an 'off' night."

  • "pop's is noisy- bread is doled out one slice at a time- food is on the spicy side-no black napkins so black pants are covered with lint"

  • "Great! Wonderful food. Waiter was knowledgable about the ingredients in the food, and what I could eat with my allergies."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "The food was delicious, although I asked to switch out one vegetable combination for another and was surprised to get asparagus and spinach mixed together instead of separately. The service was a little slow but otherwise fine. It was super cold in there - that was my only major complaint!"

  • "Pops quality of Italian food is absolutely on par with some of the best in New York. I forgot to ask but the quality of the pasta suggests that it is made in house. I had the chicken marsala and it was well balanced, a juicy cut of fresh chicken on top of a bed of angel hair pasta that was cooked perfectly. This place is a definite must visit."

  • "I always enjoy going to Pop's for dinner with friends and family. Vibrant atmosphere, excellent food with lots of people having a good time. Staff are helpful and attentive. Unfortunately, the kitchen was slow and obviously struggling to keep up, even though it was not a very busy evening with several empty tables and no one waiting to be seated. Hopefully better next time, and there will definitely be an next time."

  • "Pops seemed to be a happening kind of place ... good crowd, lots of buzz, and a steady stream of people waiting for a table. Food and service were both very good. Parking is a bit "iffy" ... although finding a place back behind all the buildings and toward the railroad tracks worked well for us. We're glad we stopped by for dinner."

  • "Pop's has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Durham, but my last visit has got me second guessing. We were a party of 4 and everyone at the table was disappointed with their food. My veggie lasagna was very different from the one I have always ordered in the past...this one had no flavor. The 2 pizzas that were ordered were fair and the chicken entrée had the same problem - no flavor. The service was not great. Overall, pretty disappointed with my last experience. Probably won't return."

  • "The food was very good as it usually is at this place. Unfortunately, it took 1.75 hours to arrive at our table. Drinks took about 35 minutes and the bread guy got there about 45 minutes after we sat down and did not return for the other hour hour we sat and waited. To be fair, it looked like they had an unexpectedly huge party seated in there, but nearly 2 hours of wait time whittles away at any taste advantages this place has over its competitors."

  • "We cannot recommend this restaurant because of the very poor service and the unexpected low quality of an entree. For the $22 scallop entree, the 5 or 6 scallops were not tasty and had a very strange flavor, while the asparagus was not cooked properly. The polenta was very good however. My daughter was not particularly impressed with her tile fish dinner either. On a better note, we enjoyed the generous plate of mussels that were perfectly prepared. We also enjoyed the pizza which is priced remarkably well. We believe that the service was incredibly slow because they were understaffed, so it possibly was not our server's fault. We waited over an hour for our food to be delivered to us which shouldn't happen."

  • "This place has some of the most amazing food I've tasted in Durham. We had the mussels, calamari, olivies and pizza. All were very tasty and definitely impressed us. We would go back again...especially for the pizza!"

  • "We had dinner at Pop's on a Saturday night just before a DPAC show, so the restaurant was very busy as expected. And although the wait staff was working at maximum capacity, they were friendly, and the service was excellent. I had the mussels and scallops, I higly recommend both dishes. If you're in Durham's downtown, you've gotta try Pop's."

  • "Since I don't give 5 stars readily, 4 stars is very very good for my ranking. This was our second visit to Pop's and they have not disappointed. While the ambience is nothing super special, the service and food may be as good as it gets in the Durham area. The wait staff is knowledgeable, timely and very friendly and they are lucky to serve some of the freshest and most flavorful dishes you'll find in downtown Durham. The pasta dishes are fantastic and the scallops were fresh, perfectly cooked, with no sand! and a topping sauce that was amazing. I have to admit that our first meal there was good, but not memorable, but the last trip was really outstanding and not outrageous from a cost stand point. Reservations suggested."

  • "We had a 5:30 reservation before going to DPAC. Seated promptly and server came immediately. He was very friendly, helpful and attentive throughout our dinner. We shared the antipasto appetizer which was delicious. Really enjoyed the mushrooms, hummus and grilled vegetables. My husband ordered the Sausage Lasagna and I ordered the Vegetarian Lasagna. Both were very good. We didn't order dessert. Pop's is in the warehouse district and we really like the exposed brick. We lucked out getting a parking spot on the street around the corner from Pop's. I guess you can park at Brightleaf about a block away. Not sure if there is parking other than that. Great night and we hope to return soon."

  • "First time visiting and the food was great. I ordered a pizza and the other guests had the monk fish. They raved about the fish. The pizza was thin crust and a great combo of toppings. Portions were good as well."

  • "not a place to go for a quiet romantic dinner...packed with lively crowds trying to eat before shows at DPAC & Carolina Theater. Since we were part of the latter group, we enjoyed the energetic buzz. The food was well prepared and delicious & the service good considering the entire restaurant seemed to be seated at once! We will return."

  • "The restaurant was crowded and noisy on the night we dined, stuck in a line of tiny two person tables set against a wall-length bench. The food was good, though nothing special given the price. Service was fine, but the ambience a little industrial and noisy for my taste."

  • "The kitchen definitely needs a review of how they process orders. Or perhaps, the management needs to review the number of accepted reservations for large parties. Our reservation for 2 was at 6pm, we arrived on time. Waitress knew we were going to the show but explained ahead time the kitchen processes orders in "runs' , there were a number of large parties and that our service would be delayed. Well, she was correct. . Drinks did not arrive until 15 minutes after we ordered, meal came at 7:10. The waitress never checked back with us and we had to hunt her down to get the check . I had noted service issues in some reviews, should have paid attention !"
