  • "Had a great evening with lots of seafood (fresh oysters, fried mussels and definetly the best octopus salad so far) and excellent wines from the Washington region. The main courses were served in Indien Thali style with 5-7 sides (salad, soup, vegetable etc.). We had the salmon (wow!) and the morels. Everything was absolutely amazing, including service."

  • "The food tasted great. However, our server got our order wrong (we ordered salmon and got vegetarian) and it took them a long time to get the correct dish out to the table. As a result, we were unable to order from their awesome-sounding dessert menu because we had concert tickets after dinner. (Our reservations were for 5:30, and our concert was at Benaroya Hall at 8:00 which should have been plenty of time.)"

The menu is unique, letting one taste a number of delicious small dishes not encountered anywhere else in town. The cocktails are very good. Do not miss the eggplant fries and definitely save room for dessert. Everything we had was above and beyond expectations. Do visit Poppy, and even before you leave the table, you will be looking for a chance to come back. Again and again."

  • "We met Chef Jerry at the Chefs Holiday at the Ahwahnee Lodge in Yosemite in January. We were so impressed with his approach to food we travelled from San Francisco to Seattle to eat in his restaurant. And we are so glad we did! He is an excellent chef but it is his unique approach to presenting the food in multiple small plates at the same time created to go together that is so fantastic! Wonderful food, beautifully presented and a terrific value for the quality."

Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list and thoughtfully advised us about the time it would take to prepare our thalis. Everyone liked their choices but we did do some trading back and forth to sample what each of us ordered. We'll go back again."

  • "My husband and I came to Poppy on our first date 5 years ago. We were very impressed, he's works in fine dining and we're both fairly picky. Just went again last night for our anniversary. Had the eggplant fries (of course), salmon and shared a thali. It was all perfection. Our waiter was fantastic."

  • "A wonderful experience. First time dining in Seattle, to visit a lady friend. We were treated to a great server, a wonderful meal, and a dessert to die for. The ambiance was elegant and trendy, but not pretentious. The tables were a little small, but cozy if you are looking for a romantic dinner for two. The couple next to us was friendly and couldn't resist sharing their own experience. The place was quiet enough for us to have an intimate conversation. The food was amazing; not sure how one person can eat the Thalis for two by themselves. We shared an appetizer and the salmon Thali, then noshed on the incredible dessert platter. The cocktails were a little pricey -- cost more than the meal at $11 a pop -- but they were delicious."

  • "Really fun night out for my husband and I on our anniversary. We started with the Numbing potato dumplings and what a taste treat! The fresh szechuan peppercorns really do numb your tongue (tingly and tasty). I have to mention our cocktails because they were just so fresh and new--the whole list intrigued us and invited us to skip the wine and savor the exotic flavors. The lovage-based cocktail my husband ordered was like a burst of herbaceous, summer in your mouth. I stuck with bourbon-based libations that had floral and fizzy notes. The Thali main courses really kept things interesting. This was a special night out for us, a challenging diversity of tastes!"

  • "Oh Poppy, why did it take us so long to find you? We had a dreamy dinner in the spectacular herb garden...by ourselves. Food--amazing. Service--friendly, helpful. Ambiance--where to start? We have talked for some time about finding a summer outdoor dining spot. And here it is, though I hesitate to tell everyone because then we won't have it all to ourselves."

  • "The waiter kept approaching table every few minutes to see if he could take the plates away. It made eating extremely uncomfortable. Ironically, when I needed the check, had to wait around to get his attention. All in all, there was a kind of waiter/service unfriendliness that is not in keeping with this sort of high-end restaurant. I tipped well because I didn't want other servers to be done out of tips and because I felt sorry for the waiter himself for being so awkward and terrible at his job. Don't think the two of us will be going back. There are better restaurants in Seattle, such as Rock Creek, where the service and food are equally excellent."

  • "The thali concept of eating from several small dishes encourages one to slow down, savor each bite and enjoy the flavor combinations. I ordered cumin-lamb osso buco which was a healthy serving. Two of the five side dishes were smoked eggplant and lentil soup with coconut yogurt and the other was leeks with black olive and sun-dried tomatoes. All of the seasonings complemented each other and were the perfect amount of food. My friend ordered nettle and risotto with fiddleheads and raved about it. "

  • "your reservations system is not good. five of us wanted to do dinner at 7:00 on a Tuesday. The reservation system said space was available at 6:00 or 8:15 yet when we walked in at 6:00 the place was almost empty and when we left at 8:00 it wasn't even half full. The problem seems to be the availability tables for 5 or 6. What!! you can't push tables together?"

The waitress was able to help us accommodate all the allergies at the table (and there were many!) without returning to to the kitchen for advice or permission. Every morsel I put in my mouth created a comment on its flavors. The chef is creative and knows how to awaken and please our senses. "

  • "Jerry Traunfeld is a culinary magician. How does he continue to always surprise me with flavors and combinations of ingredients that never disappoint? It feels magical. Poppy has become the "go to" restaurant for me when I have out of town guests to share in something truly unique and Northwest food that is prepared with flavors that surprise and delight every time. I recently had a "run" of house guests and took all of them to Poppy. This meant I have eaten there 5 times in the last 2 months. Monkfish is a favorite of mine that can be tricky to prepare correctly. It was so good, I ordered it twice in one week! And the Salmon that I had this past Sat. was unbelievable. The soups have become a favorite of mine, a treat every time. "

  • "My boyfriend heard about Poppy weeks ago, so I surprised him with an early birthday dinner. He's the type of person who will try any food (and I mean ANY food!) and knew he'd love the unique flavors that Poppy is so well known for. We arrived at 5:30 and were offered garden seating out back (a lush garden with cute tables, lavender and of course, poppies!) and when they heard it was his birthday, we were offered congratulatory champagne. Our servers and hostess were personable and kind, the food was delicious, Overall, it was a wonderful birthday experience for him! "

  • "The main part of each of our meals was nice but the accompaniments that were supposed to be crafted for each main were less then exciting and repeated from one dish to the next leading us to believe they weren't really crafted to match with each main dish. In addition, the service was a bit "canned". Our server, although nice, repeated the same stories to each of his tables and had an awkward way of agreeing with anything said, making him seem fake."

  • "Food tasted very good, with unusual but very pleasant favors. Service however was super slow ( for example it took -20 mins after being seated and given water until we asked one of the servers passing by to take our order. She was very nice. 5 mins later another server stopped by to tell us it will take a little more for him to come back and take our order.). It is true there was an influx of diners around 8:45 PM but that should not impact quality of service as much... The second dish took about 30 mins or more to appear on our table as well... It took 2.5 hours to eat a total of 2 dishes..."

  • "Each time I dine at Poppy, I enjoy the genius and creativity of Chef Jerry Traunfeld, who has spawned several local successful chefs. I usually order two or three starters like the poached oyster with sorrel sauce and bacon, and the eggplant fries with sea salt and honey. But there were so many I wanted to try, I almost ordered from that list. But what I love about Poppy is it's inviting and warm in winter, and has a comfortable vibe where you can converse without shouting. Atmosphere is warm - modern, with locally made furnishings. With garden dining in the rear (urban romantic) and sidewalk dining in the front. Service is friendly, professional, timely and unpretentious - a refreshing experience for Cap. Hill. "

  • "My partner and I went to Poppy last Friday night. We had reservations for 7:45pm, but the hostess was able to seat us early. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and the drink list. Both my partner and I had the halibut dish which came with pickled rhubarb (delicious and I recommend eating it either last or in-between dishes as a sort of palate cleanser), a cucumber yogurt salad (crisp cucumber with just enough yogurt dressing), black rice with coconut flakes, yam and onion, asparagus with peanuts and peanut oil and a large piece of freshly baked nann (that can be dipped in your remaining yogurt dressing from the cucumber salad or dipped in the halibut carrot sauce). I will be back to this restaurant hopefully very soon."
