Poppyadventurous and fun cuisineWe recommend both the restaurant's food and service. Nice without being pretentious and the menu is fun and creative. the staff were all very friendly as well. The Thalis were a great way to try many flavors without getting overly stuffed. Loved the well-conceived cocktails also. Great fun and really enjoyed sitting in their small herb garden.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways Unique, Never DisappointsPoppy has been outstanding all 3 times I've dined there. The creative combination of ingredients is inspiring and delicious.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMI have food allergies andI have food allergies and they were great with accounting them! The food was wonderful!6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMThalis are a brilliant conceptThe Thali concept makes for a totally unique dining experience. Not only does the Thali present the diner with an assortment of truly unique, interesting, fresh, local, delicious food items (you literally couldn't find the dishes they offer anywhere else), but it offers them in small, individual serving dishes all at the same time, on a platter. This orients the diner to 'grazing' back and forth between the exotic soup, salad, entrée, vegetable dishes and naan, rather than going through them one by one in a linear fashion. Jerry Traunfeld's approach to procuring and preparing exclusively food items that are grown or living within a very small radius (think extreme locavore), makes for a special, healthy and delicious dining experience.6/10/2013 12:00:00 AMMain courses were amazing.Main courses were amazing. The soups were bland. All the little side dishes were interesting and fun. Overall it was a great experience and I'm glad we went.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic flavorsBased on our most recent visit, Poppy has improved with age and is making the most of its unusual menu. The small dishes are better balanced to provide a satisfying meal, each was thoughtfully prepared, and overall we had a great dinner with friends. Recommended!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMSpectacular!!!I have now dined at Poppy 3 times. Every item I have tried there has been wonderful. The presentation is beautiful, the food is divine. The wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I love mixed drinks, especially unique drinks with interesting combinations of ingredients. Poppy does not disappoint on this front either. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMCreative, simple, deliciousGreat execution of the thali idea. Everything very delicious, ingredients shining through. Highly, highly recommend.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstandingBoth the food and the service were outstanding. We got to sit in the garden patio by the herb garden. Nothing better than having a chef excuse himself while he snips some leaves to go in a dish!6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMYUMPoppy is always surprising and lovely. I go as often as I can.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMIncredible birthday dinnerWe have been to Poppy before and my only complaint was the service was not on point. Not the case this time. Karel was phenomenal and we had an amazing dinner to celebrate my birthday. Food is always amazing and you just can't go wrong with anything here.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was delicious and interesting.Food was delicious and interesting. I was introduced to many combinations of flavors with which I was very unfamiliar. Our food was a bit late (45+ minutes for the entree), but our server was aware of it and made sure we didn't feel abandoned.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMPoppy always ExcellentThis was our 6th or 7th visit to Poppy. The Thali is a very interesting style of serving very well prepared food. Do not go there expecting Indian food, this is NW cuisine served Thali style. Always excellent, the flavors are very well designed and executed. The oyster appetizer was divine! Drinks are also very creative, try the lovage drink, it is a different take on a Mojito.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMJerry's Poppy Stands TallJerry Traunfeld is a genius with flavorful ingredients, especially herbs, & unusual combinations. He introduced us to sea beans at The Herbfarm. His daily presence in the restaurant seems to inspire a good attitude in cooks and servers. Reasonable prices encourage repeat visits. Thali-style presentation is delightful, literally, allowing variety in modest servings. For us, Poppy is one of the top 5 restaurants in the Seattle area.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent for the NW ForagerOur server knew her way around the wine list -- always a plus! Sausage and short rib pleased our meat eater. I'd skip the spiced nuts and grains, though -- too much like dried cereal without the milk.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMPoppysI liked the food in that it was well prepared and not too filling. I also like the sharing aspect5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat innovative restaurantGreat innovative restaurant with terrific food. The small portion dinner multiple option dinner options were superb.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMUnderperformed expectationsMost of our party of 8 arrived about 20 min before our reservation and we were accommodated at the bar while our table was readied. The cocktails were original and interesting. Between all of us, we ordered the 'normal' and vegetarian versions of both the 7 and 10 item thalis. The food was well prepared (not over or under cooked), but some of the hot thalis cooled off too fast to fully enjoy. Some of the flavor combinations seems a bit forced, like they were part of an experiment (perhaps my expectations were unduly inflated by my experiences at the Herb Farm?). None-the-less, dinner was quite enjoyable and I will definitely return - this is my forth or fifth time eating at Poppy.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMJerry Traunfeld, favorite chefLove this place. The setting is just right for a relaxing, enjoyable meal. Great service, very special meal, unique in every sense of the word. I wish Jerry would move to Miami, professionally. We could use a place like Poppy.
Thanks for a wonderful evening with some special friends. I hope to see all of the wonderful people at Poppy soon.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious, creative cuisine!Delicious, creative cuisine! Perfect portions and scintillating combinations make for a culinary thrill.Easy to converse with dining partners in this inviting comfortable setting in Capital Hill.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was our third meal atThis was our third meal at Poppy and probably our best!
The vegetarians were thrilled with their Thali.
The duck was also declicious.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food!Went for my anniversary and was pleasantly surprised! So delicious. Colorful. Great little place. Would definitely go back. Also the 10 Thalis was very filling so don't worry about the small portions.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMTry this place! We loved the subtlety and variety of flavors in the small plates. Beautifully presented.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMOn arrival we were seatedOn arrival we were seated at a cramped table in the middle of the room and when we asked the hostess to move us, she said no, that they were sold out. Later, our server, Madeline, was very accommodating when asked if she could move us. She was very helpful with our requests for cocktails and menu substitutions. She was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine list and very gracious throughout the evening... certainly an asset to Poppy. Almost everything on our chosen thalis was deliciously prepared and the use of spring fresh herbs brought each dish to another level. The green-roasted halibut and lavender-rubbed duck leg were excellent. The beef cheeks were a tad dry and not as tender and flavorful as we've had in other restaurants.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMEat outside the boxThis place is definitely worth checking out. Poppy offers an easy, and tasty, way of trying multiple items in smaller portions and makes being adventurous a little easier. Overall, a great setup, with a fantastic staff and wonderful view for people watching.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat serviceI must say that the service at this restaurant is incredible. The servers are knowledgeable and very helpful.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMWe are repeat diners at thisWe are repeat diners at this neighborhood favorite restaurant that serves up interesting combinations and flavorful India based preparations of foods sourced locally in the north west. As usual, whether selecting a 7 dish meal or a 10 dish meal, there was plenty of variety and a few dishes that would broaden our experience. The herb infused cocktails and the unusual appetizers at the beginning of the evening started us off right, and the recommended wine pairings worked well with the main dishes. The service was attentive.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat concept for food presentationgreat concept for food presentation and healthy portion sizes5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat!Outdoor seating right in the sunshine for nice days! The non-alcoholic drinks are delicious.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMUnevenIn a town with so many dining choices, Poppy
Was unfortunately not a standout.
Of my selection of ten main course dishes, two were superb,
Two good, and six a disappointment,
It is a fun spot and the service very good, but I will not go back,
except possibly for dessert,
Which included the best cake, hazelnut,
I have ever had in my life.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulously executed, interestingFabulously executed, interesting "thalis" concept. We LOVED this restaurant.4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMTrendy, open setting, friendlyTrendy, open setting, friendly ambience. Very interesting and tasty food.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe most notable part of theThe most notable part of the night here was the food. The food here is great and inventive. There are flavors melded together that I would never have guessed, which makes dining here so exciting. I must admit a few flavor combinations were pushing the envelope with what I found to be great, but after a few more bites, it really seemed to work. Our waitress was very polite but perhaps not as timely with orders or clearing the table. I suppose her taste in the food may have differed from ours. We asked for a recommendation of an appetizer and the grilled eggplant fries that she pretty firmly stated was the best did not stand up to the quality of the rest of the dinner. Overall a great dinner. Inventive food4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMThali style dining (one plateThali style dining (one plate with seven or ten items) was fun. Vegetarian options delicious. Unique offerings no easily found elsewhere.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent foodSome of the most interesting and delicious dishes I've had, all on the same platter! A very unique format of Thali's, many dishes on one platter, each tasty in it's own right. Lots of Moroccan and Indian influences with fresh herbs and unusual spices. The decor is contemporary, not too note worthy. Fun and yummy cocktails.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMA great place to have dinnerA great place to have dinner at a table with friends or sitting alone at the bar. The food is always delicious. I recommend the 7 course thali with a few appetizers to start. Poppy also has a few great vegetarian options too. Everyone on staff is always welcoming and fun to be around. It's a definite must if you haven't already been.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMA great concept excellentlyA great concept excellently executed. The food was good - both the starter and the thali. The flavours work well together and the idea is fun. If we lived in the area we would be regulars!4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMPoppy was an interesting playPoppy was an interesting play on Indian spice profiles. My husband doesn't care for traditional Indian cuisine but really enjoyed this. It was an ideal experience for sharing.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMCouldn't be better!Fabulous, couldn't be better. And thanks for supporting the Dine out for Life organization!4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a wonderful dining experience,Had a wonderful dining experience, can't wait to take some friends there4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMOur experience was very goodOur experience was very good -- Poppy has a lot of buzz for a reason. The food is not only good, but presented in a fresh, fun way that makes each dish more pleasant. The food is, if I understand it, a kind of twist on Indian fare, but the vibe of the place is more fun and modern than any other Indian restaurant I've been to. Try the oysters, they were delicious!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat interesting flavors&food NewGreat interesting flavors&food

Not a place To go if in a hurry
Service pleasant but slow......4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMThe taste combinations wereThe taste combinations were innovative and delicious. I have already recommended it.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMMy first time at Poppy wasMy first time at Poppy was phenomenal. Our server was awesome and the host was also amazing. I would recommend this to all my friend. The food was a bundle of cosmic explosions.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful choices....veryWonderful choices....very different ingredients but all went well together...4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMInteresting food and drinkInteresting food and drink menu. Every dish is made with fresh locally grown food. Every bite is burst with flavor. I thought the dishes are so small that I won’t feel full with the 7-item thalis, but surprisingly I was very satisfied and full. All thali come with nigella-poppy naan...which is pretty good.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMWill Try Again!I've lived on Capitol Hill for a year and walked by Poppy hundreds of time. Everyone alwaays looked like they were having a great time. I finally decided to try it during Seattle Restaurant Week and Poppy did not disappoint. We were seated immediately at our 630pm reservation time. Our server was knowledgeable and described the appetizers and thalis in great detail. The black cod was poached to perfection and all of the thali accompaniments were creative and tasty. The desserts were pretty good. The half bottle of chenin blanc we chose went great with our vegetarian and fish dishes. My only gripe is that it took almost half an hour between each course.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was my first restaurantThis was my first restaurant on my seattle restaurant week list. I am glad I made reservation to dine here with my baby sister. The hostess gave us a warm welcoming and set us immediately at the table I reserve. The waiter we had was very polite, courtliest, and food was delicious. Can't wait to dine here again.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the most creative restaurantOne of the most creative restaurants in Seattle. Wonderful food.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMVery cute and friendly placeVery cute and friendly place to dine. It has its own herb garden outside of the restaurant, and you can tell the herb is freshly picked from it.. The chief makes the ordinary ingredients into extraordinary tastes by mixing the herb magically with the food. Will likely to go back again.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
