Breakfast special seemed like an omelet made with leftovers, something cool to do at home. Potatoes were crispy but cut into such small cubes I missed having something tender and fluffy inside, plus it's hard to put a fork into hard 1/2 inch dice. Don't pretend a half strawberry, a pineapple sliver and one orange slice make a side of fresh fruit. It's still a garnish. Final Tip: Don't sit at the bar; the bartender doesn't make a good waitress. OJ plus the breakfast special, never got the muffins and another waiter took pity & finally refilled my water. Good thing Gourmet Girls Gluten Free Bakery Bistro is on the way home.

  • Disappointing Brunch

We have been to Poppy Kitchen on previous occasions for dinner and had very good food and service. Tried the Saturday brunch which was totally contrary to our other experiences. Ordered their special Bloody Mary and waited at least 15 minutes beyond the 10-15 minutes we waited for service for them to be brought to the table. The beverages were good, but nothing special. I ordered an omelet with bacon, sausage, caramelized onions and cheese. My partner ordered the steak and eggs. Again we waited an inordinate amount of time before the food was served. Both dishes were mediocre. Not bad, but nothing beyond ordinary. Maybe we had our sights set too high, because our dinner experiences at Poppy have been much more into the gourmet eclectic cuisine. Will we go back to Poppy Kitchen? Yes, but not for brunch.

  • Why I can't quite recommend Poppy's
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007VIP

The good news....Poppy's food and service and atmosphere were really rather good. The not so good news....you must want to choose from a very limited menu to find something to enjoy. The experience started with Poppy's not having a full bar. We asked for Scotch (just about any kind) and they didn't have any so.....you'd better like their specialty drinks or like I did, just have water. When it came to the food my husband and I had a really hard time finding something that appealed to us (and we are NOT picky eaters, far from it). I had the special entree and both that as well as the appetizer were really tasty. My husband ordered off the menu and he also was really pleased. Deciding to go back here's my take.....I'd better be content having a hamburger (table next to ours did look delicious) because if I don't like the special I'd be hard pressed to find something to order. Also, I guess I'll just have a drink at home before I come. Recommendation to Poppy's....have some simple items to choose from and some simple liquor.

Having been a fan of J Bar I was sorely dissapointed in the ambiance. The patio lacked the special atmosphere one wants for fine dining. This is a sports bar with a high priced menu. Popcorn on the table in leiu of bread, which if you want (pumpernickel raisin) you must pay for. The wait staff is dressed more causually than the diners. Our entree arrived within minutes after our cocktails. I would have liked to enjoy my cocktail with a little conversation before the meal came out. We were given the check without being asked if we would like dessert and we had not finished our cocktails yet…we had the Fish #2 which was trout. It was very good. However tht is not enough for me to recommend a restaurant. I want the whole dining experience.

Nice indoor and outdoor seating. Good food. I have been there twice for late lunch when the restaurant was on the quiet side. Eating on the out-door wrap-around patio is nice when the weather is nice and when your table faces the golf course. Note that the breakfast menu consists of all but one egg-dish. You do have the option of choosing from the main menu. My friend was extremely happy with the choices she was given to swap the meat in a pasta dish for a vegetable and was very happy with the result.

I was so excited to finally try Poppy Kitchen (previously Jax Kitchen on Oracle and Ina). Unfortunately, they lost the recipe for success when they moved to their new location. Our experience: horrible location (no signs indicating where it is), hostess too busy talking on her cell phone to seat us, dining table at entry filled with hostesses personal items including coffee from a different restaurant, most tables empty (no customers), food was either tool salty (potatoes), cold (bacon) and tasteless (eggs). My best advise for the owners is to get back their previous location, call it Jax Kitchen, hire back all previous employees and beg your customers to come back. What was once a destination location (as Jax) is now nothing special.

The location on the La Paloma resort property in the Catalina Foothills is lovely with wonderful views of the city lights. Tucson's terrific weather most of the year allows diners to take advantage of a spacious outdoor dining area. Indoors, the scene is lively and chic, but the music is much too loud. The food is fresh and inventive, with large portions. My husband enjoyed the Short Ribs in a Coconut Red Curry Braise, while a lighter Grouper special over Roasted Spaghetti Squash and Sauteed Greens (Fish No. 2 as described on the menu) more than satisfied me. The Beignets for dessert were heavenly.

I definitely had the best seat in the restaurant during my recent visit! I was on the patio and had a spectacular view of the city lights! The great view went very well with the great service and the great food I've come to expect from the Metzger restaurants. I had the swordfish special and my friend had the veal pasta. Both were delicious and perfectly cooked. We also discovered a new wine we love which was "Brian's choice" on the menu - a delightful Super Tuscan.

Great restaurant if you want to wait 1 1/2 hours to get your food. The food was very good though. We just didn't expect it to take so long. Server, bussers, rarely came to the table during that time, to ask how things were or to explain why everyone else was starting to be served, except us.

It was very hard to find Poppy with no signs directing visitors to the location. We were not seated where we could view scenery, despite the fact that the place was nearly empty on a Saturday night. The white house wine was fantastic. The quesidilla appetizer was kind of greasy and a lot spicier than we thought it would be. My duck and snap peas were very good, but the rice was extremely salty. My companion's fish and accompanying veggies were quite good. The carrot cake for dessert was very tasty. Service was exceptional and friendly. The food was inconsistent in quality, and someone needs to lay off the salt shaker. For the price I expected exceptional, but it was just a tad above average.

Came here for the first time with a friend a few nights ago. Very pleased with the service--waitstaff was very attentive, friendly, and prompt. I wasn't extremely hungry so I just ordered the board, which was decent--I've had better, and my friend had the pasta, I believe it was a veal Milanese. She said it was really good (and it looked good!). We shared the made-to-order carrot cake--very rich, very delicious! Friend and I lost track of time chatting and didn't realize we were last ones in the restaurant until 40 min after closing time. Felt bad, but appreciate that the waitstaff was never pushy about getting us out the door! Will definitely return--albeit for a special occasion, as prices are just a tad bit on the higher side.

Four of us went for dinner and all agreed this place is a little "quirky." Sat at a booth in the bar which had way too good a view of part of the kitchen - a very ugly view, not the usual "open kitchen" view. Why this area doesn't have a door is beyond comprehension. Some rather odd menu items and some disappointing food. After tasting, only two of the four would eat the octopus salad but French fries were excellent. Steak tartare was acceptable. Chicken was returned to the kitchen because it was horribly overcooked. Quesadillas were mediocre. Not a place that warrants a return visit.

The trout came room temperature on a very hot plate after it was sent back to the kitchen it returned, well, shriveled. By that time everyone else had finished eating. The Kobe beef cheeseburger ordered medium rare came out well-done. When I asked for some bread to accompany the soup it took 10' to arrive by which time the soup was long gone. And we got charged $1 for a small serving of bread. The wait staff seemed to have no clue. A thoroughly unpleasant experience. We have no intention to return.

Well, this 2nd time seemed that the NOISE level was better, even tho it still can be LOUD........not all of the menu items are favorites, so I pick and choose. I wouldn't come here on a regular basis, I feel the prices are on the higher side, but it is good for when you want to eat lighter. The DESSERT was excellent, we ordered 2 dessert for our party of 4, the carrot cake, and the strawberry ice-cream....both very very good! It is also a place to come for dessert too! Would like to try the brunch on Saturday. This was our second choice for dining Friday night, as our first choice was booked, so we ended up at Poppy's......mmmmmmm
