A word from Poor Calvin's

Free Car Service provided by Uber for all midtown and downtown. Call for scheduling or mention while making reservations.

We know the word "fusion" has been wielded to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. Continued

  • "What a great surprise. We were looking for an interesting brunch menu (since my wife does not eat eggs) and we certainly found it at Poor Calvin's. The menu was wonderfully creative and the food excellent. There were so many great choices it was difficult to decide. We loved everything we ate (and drank) - fusion food based upon Southern and Thai. Very original and very delicious. Our waitress was wonderful, extremely personable and friendly and she made some great suggestions. We can't wait to go back!"

  • "Poor calvins is just south of midtown and has a lot to offer. The service and food are always amazing. If they have a special that sounds good to you- get it!"

  • "I took my husband here for his birthday to enjoy a nice brunch. The brunch was amazing. The food was out of this world and we will be back . The vibe had this NYC ambience which was great since I'm from the Queens, NY and miss places like this at home. The chef Calvin himself came out to ensure you were having a good time. We spoke to him directly and he was so nice and passionate about food. Great place a must try ."

  • "I like this restaurant! Great lobster macaroni and fried chicken, and even better customer service. :-)"

  • "I liked this place. I like trying different restaurants and the food here was pretty good. I tried the shrimp, sausage and grits and they were good, but they didn't top my 2 favorites in the city. The seasoning, the fusion was good."

  • "Yummy! The presentation was beautiful but the taste was divine. The chicken was crispy on the outside, but it did not have a breading. It was more like a glaze, but it was not too sweet. Then there was the waffles...so soft and fluffy. I didn't teapot taste the set patio so much because every bite was filled with bacon! I forgot to mention, bacon was in my waffle batter and who does not like bacon? The sweet and salty combination was perfect. Going back soon... oh and how could I forget the bottomless drinks? I had the sangria which one glass would have sufficed (it was huge) and my date had mimosas, definitely worth the $15 bottomless price."

  • "Three members of our party ordered the lobster fried rice and they loved it! Two ordered the egg benedict with the crab cake and loved it. I ordered the seafood platter which was a lot of fried seafood. Nothing exciting. The shrimp were good, but the everything else was fine, nothing over the top. We got the beignets for the table, those were a hit! Not like Cafe du Monde beignets, but good nevertheless. IF you're looking for a lot of "healthy" choices, this is not the spot for you. Very high rich food with no desire to "cut the butter." I would recommend the spot, there was a musician playing jazz so that was nice, and unexpected. Not too loud but at the right volume. Parking is tricky. Very small parking lot and no valet."

  • "Took my daughter and 2.5 year old granddaughter for Sunday Brunch yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Although they were very accommodating for my granddaughter, I wouldn't necessary classify as "kid-friendly"(or maybe it was just my rambunctious sweetheart exercising her "terrible 2's tendencies!). 1"

  • "Sunday Brunch - 1 guy 4 angels (2 newbies) Everyone thought the food was great (as always). Lola the waitperson answered all questions about the menu with great knowledge. Chef Calvin came by and visited all tables. James the host makes the best Manhattans in Atlanta. In my opinion Poor Calvin's is the best restaurant in Atlanta."

  • "Everything, and I mean everything, about this place was spot on. The apps (basil roll, pimento crab fries) were excellent- we kept the fries on the table to munch on throughout dinner. Four of us got different entrees, and all were excellent. The steak, shrimp Pad Thai, Thai curry and sea bass were passed around once for tasting, but then everyone hunkered down to inhale their respective dishes. The suspension cake made us overeat, but it was too good to pass up. Our waiter was perfectly attuned to when we needed him and gave great recs. The music was fun, and not so loud that we couldn't hear each other talking. The house that PC occupies was quaint and gave us privacy as well as a good people watching vantageoint. We are so glad we went!"

  • "We found Poor Calvin's by doing a google search. What a pleasant surprise when we visited. The parking lot is very small, but has a wonderful valet who works his magic. The restaurant is in an old house with lots of charm. You will immediately see a wonderful libation - a fruit fusion - that is fermenting in a big container on the bar. It is delicious! The shrimp tom yum soup is delicious. As is the fried goat cheese. For dinner, I love the lobster fried rice and my wife loves the crispy beef. We have been back 2-times, including inviting another couple to join us. We highly recommend this restaurant if you want to try something different -- dine at a fun, casual restaurant with good cocktails and excellent food."

  • "Poor Calvin's has the best bartender and chef in town."

  • "This was my second time visiting. We chose to sit at the bar instead of being seated because James was so energetic! The service provided has been phenomenal regardless of the seating. The food is always a hit. This is my go-to spot for all occasions!"

  • "Came here because of this article: http://www.movoto.com/atlanta-ga/best-foods-in-atlanta/. Food was great. But probably won't return here because of the shoddy decor."

  • "Delicious Thai food in a funky yet cozy atmosphere...the cocktails were made with fresh ingredients (Midnight Overture and one made with a house-infused pineapple vodka), the appetizers were delicious (coconut shrump and lobster wontons), and the food was great - although I'd never eaten there before, it seemed like comfort food (bacon pineapple fried rice, and crispy beef). The service was excellent, with both the server and bartender taking very good care of us."

  • "Although the location may not be the absolute best, it's definitely worth stopping by this part of town for some excellent fusion fare from Poor Calvin's. Although some of the offerings might be considered somewhat eclectic, there is plenty to choose from for even the most picky eater."

  • "Enjoyed the subtleties of flavors and surprises in combination of textures and taste, lamb with a hint of curry, quail with crispness and saltiness combined with the silkiness of oyster mushroom, dessert to die for with red velvet cake wrapped in chocolate and tapioca popping in your mouth."

  • "Great service and wonderful food. The atmosphere was great. Our waitress was excellent and very fun. I asked for my personal drink, a hot and dirty martini and the bartender had to come talk to me about it and stated it was a great idea."

  • "What a pleasant surprise! Work 3 blocks from here and never knew about it until I looked on Open Table and saw great reviews. And they were all correct! Food was superb (could have made it filled up on small plates that were sufficient in size). Service was "outstanding". We will be back! The Lobster Mac and Fried Green Tomatoes were fantastic!"

  • "The food was good, but didn't blow me away. I really liked the location and would definitely like to go back and try other items on the menu. The service was good. I would definitely give this place another chance. "

  • "It took a while to find the spot but we manged to find it! The pineapple fried rice was amazing. The drink with rose petals...not so much. A small bit of gin for 9 bucks? No thanks! The dining experience was amazing...but at the end of the night after we paid, the waiter never returned the checkbook for us to retrive our change. And he even had the nerve to say to my fiancée and I "I did not receive a tip from this table." I was mortified. What an awkward situation! We did not tip. He never brought back our change so hope that satified him as a tip from us!"

  • "I cannot tell you where I have had a better meal with better service. From the moment we arrived we were treated like we were the only ones there, truly the royal treatment. I was introduced to this restaurant for lunch, which was fantastic, so I brought my husband here for a birthday dinner. Our dinners were the best restaurant meals we have ever eaten. We had lamb chops and scallops. Both dinners were unique and cooked to perfection. Even the desert was overwhelmingly wonderful. The chef ensures every experience is a memorable one. I highly recommend this restaurant to you!"

  • "Had a girls night to celebrate a friend's engagement. Its a small intimate place with a unique style. The food was very good and the staff very friendly."

  • "The first thing if note was that the waiter had smokers breath. He was nice but you didn't want him too close. The mustard on the Basil rolls tasted like store bought honey mustard and the veggies did not taste fresh. My beef dish was too dry. "

  • "We have been to Calvin's several times and as always, a good time was had by all. Everyone loved their meals and the desserts were to dir for"

  • "The curb appeal of Poor Calvin's is a bit indiscernible and hardly compares to the treat inside. The food was excellent and the service was equally as pleasing. It's small and cozy, and has somewhat of an eclectic appeal. The indoor patio and the open french windows are an added treat for seating. I look forward to going back. "

  • "The food was absolutely delicious- I took my mom and her friends for Mother's Day. We had the lobster wontons, beef satay, crab fries and all were devoured. For entrees I had the fried chicken (which comes with lobster Mac and cheese- yum!) my mom had the sweet potato waffle which was amazing, my moms friends had the eggs Benedict and lobster fried rice (served in a pineapple) and everyone could not stop talking about how good the food was! We then finished with their fusion drink which was so tasty we had to ask how they made it! I'm so glad I chose this place based on the reviews because they were so right... which also led me to wanting to add my own! "
