A word from Poor Calvin's

Free Car Service provided by Uber for all midtown and downtown. Call for scheduling or mention while making reservations.

We know the word "fusion" has been wielded to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was amazing. I have never tasted food so full of flavor. Our waitress was phenomenal. Loved the charming decor. Definitely a must go."

  • "The food here is great! The menu is unique and the presentation is first rate. The patio is lovely (though we couldn't get a table outside this time). The pineapple fried rice and duck rolls are particularly recommended! The only thing that kept me from rating this restaurant with five stars was the hostess. To say that she was surly and unwelcoming would be an understatement. The rest of the wait and bar staff were so friendly, her lack of manners was particularly shocking. In fact, I've rarely been encountered such a poor hostess - unfortunately, her behavior colored the first part of our dinner. Luckily, we forgot her when the food came. If you can stomach the hostile welcome, definitely give the restaurant a try!"

  • "Took some friends from out of town, and were happy to find we were all able to hear each other without yelling. The calamari was maybe the best we've had in ATL (and we have had plenty), and all 4 of us got different dishes, all cooked to perfection, beautiful presentation, wonderful blends of flavors. My adult son and GF found out we had gone and said they would have ditched their plans with friends to come along too! Their experience some months ago made quite an impression. Our first time here was shortly after they opened a good while back with several visits since, and the food has been consistently fabulous!"

  • "I've been to Poor Calvin's several times and thoroughly enjoyed each. I was pleasantly surprised at my last visit to find a change to the menu...lobster stir-fried rice. OMG...it would have been delicious without the lobster, but that certainly made it awesome. I was in a group of five with 4 different selections and everyone's plate was clean! When the signature apple dessert came out and everyone tried it, the look on each face was priceless. I have no idea how something so simple can taste so amazing. This little restaurant is a hidden treasure. Please go...I don't want it to ever go away!"

  • "Went here last week, and one week later i'm still thinking about how great the food was. I will continue coming back here until I try everything on the menu. The place is very interesting - a converted building that gives you the feeling that you are in an office or a house. We were seated on the (enclosed) wrap around porch. The seating out there is pretty tight, so be prepared to be sitting very close to other tables - but it wont matter once you start eating! The staff were really friendly and cool, made us feel welcome and comfortable. Be sure to grab one or two of the small plates as a starter - it is really really really worth it. Definitely top 5 places I have eaten in Atlanta (Been here for 1 year)"

  • "It was a great brunch spot but make sure to reserve a table closer to noon than three. It fills up fast. The calamari was great and the suspension cake a purchased for a friend was delicious. The service was a little slow. Our waitress was really funny but she was a little to heavy on conversation - not so much on speedy service. We got to the bottom of glasses several times. Overall - worth it. Great food. I'll be back."

  • "The food isn't bad but nothing spectacular. I really enjoyed the decor though, it's really unique. If you like Thai food I think it's a good place to go on a spatial occasion."

  • "I love Poor Calvin's. My only complaint, which is my problem, is I just can't find a specialty drink that I like. I'll stick with the beer from now on. Other than that, the food continues to amaze, the service is wonderful, and the ambience is great. If this were the only Atlanta restaurant I went to for the rest of my life, I'd be good with that!!!"

  • "Was attracted here by the reviews in Trip Advisor. The service was very welcoming and the martinis are wonderful. We tried different appetizers, artichoke and crab, etc and for main course tried the lobster fried rice. Presentation was excellent and the taste wonderful. The prices were reasonable, portions generous and for value I would give a five star. I will certainly be back again and this time try their pineapple fried rice and other items. If you are in a hurry try something quick to serve. This place is better to relax, talk to your spouse and enjoy a great meal. Parking is available with about 7-9 spots. It is close enough to downtown and well worth the walk. Bon appetit!"

  • "The space is full of creative influences in its offerings yet not intimidating an obvious for shadowing of the menu. As the food emerged we were transported as our elation inflated. I had laughed uncontrollably at my 2 year old nephew a month before at his first taste and discovery of natural coconut water and the shiver at that sip. I imagined I behaved in the same manner as I kicked professionalism to the side and let my emotions hang unhinged. Poor Calvin's is perfect fit for most anyone, those that are adventurous, enjoy a little spice, or want an intimate space to share. Ultimately this dining experience will prod you to create conversation in those awkward moments and will help define the conversation in more familiar ones."

  • "Researching Atlanta restaurants on Open Table, I came across Poor Calvin's, featuring an eclectic fusion menu, and many very positive reviews by diners. A short hop from our downtown Atlanta hotels, we were blown away by this gem. The fusion and Asian-infused dishes were incredibly good -- wildly inventive and extraordinarily tasty. A modest wine and beer list featured solid choices all around. And the atmosphere of the place really put it over the top for us. The wait staff was clearly passionate about the cuisine, as well as being extremely friendly and accommodating. And when things got busy during the dinner hour, Calvin himself made an understated appearance at our table to help serve our main courses. Bravo! Don't miss it."

  • "Located in an urban building repurposed as a restaurant, an old house I assume-we always like the feel of such places. Our seating preference always is for the tables on the wrap around porch (enclosed and heated in the winter of course). Off the menu, I could devour a tray of basil rolls, and still want more. Same for crab cakes, which have, at least for me, a unique almost creamy texture. Very much enjoy them. For the entree, all I've ever done are specials. Always interesting. Always a tasty treat."

  • "We went to Poor Calvin's on a Sun night - it was great all the way around. Our host was nice and fun y. Our waiter was knowledgable a d the food was amazing! The rack of lamb was cooked perfect and the Lobster presentation was lovely! The Red Velvet cake was to die for!! Would recommend and return to Poor Calvin's!"

  • "The food was amazing, the service was excellent! Great date night, and we will be back! Next time I want to sit inside, prefer the ambiance over patio seating, also was too full for dessert but they sounded really good :-)"

  • "2nd time at PC's. In regards to the presentation and the overall taste of the food, I still regard it the best find, for me, in Atlanta. We brought our daughter there for her 21st birthday, and, surprisingly, our server was very, very helpful in helping her figure out what to order for her first legal adult beverage. Thanks PC's!"

  • "Was in Atlanta for a meeting, and read many reviews on open table, and selected Poor Calvin's. It was the best possible choice! The service was incredible, Calvin himself came to our table and talked about his process for creating menus and the food was superb. Loved the cool ambiance - appetizers especially were enjoyed by all. Try the mussels! We celebrated a birthday, and the food and service contributed to a wonderful evening. I'd love to try brunch next time. Thanks!"

  • "It was an interesting experience. I figured since the food was so expensive it would taste amazing. The food was good but not for the price. The lobster wasn't as fresh as I am used to, it was quite fishy. The appetizer we got were the duck rolls and they were pretty good but the servers kept us waiting so long for our food that anything would have tasted good because we were so hungry. It took a good half hour for a server to even ask us what drinks we wanted. I had made a reservation that evening but my date and I still had to wait 20 minutes for a table. The ambiance was beautiful and interesting but didn't make up for the mediocre food and bad service."

  • "The atmosphere was good. Nice touches of art everywhere...speaking of art the food looked like it came out of a design magazine. gorgeous to look at and even more wonderful to eat. The fusion of Asian and southern foods was delicious."

  • "I reserved a table on a whim, as the menu seemed intriguing. Needless to say, the food was incredible. I had the fried chicken over a bed of lobster macaroni and cheese, with grilled squash and asparagus. My friend had the duck. We both agreed that this was by far, the best meal we have had in any Atlanta restaurant. The service was exceptional, and the cocktails were delicious. We ended the meal with the homemade red velvet cake, which was undoubtedly the best I have ever had. This is my new favorite restaurant in Atlanta, and I will be going back very soon and frequently."

  • "We were in fairly early, not long after open, so it was quite quiet with only two other groups dining. We were in atlanta for a concert and had to eat early. Everything we ate was outstanding and we're not that easily impressed. Very good service. Not too expensive either, just an all round gem and we'll be back for sure next time we're in town. All three courses (and I tried my wife's too) were delicious, so that's 6/6 of what we ordered. I doubt there's a bad item on the menu! Highly recommended!"

  • "Enjoyed the food but did not find it memorable. The restaurant is small with two dining areas. Our table was near the bar and kitchen and the noise level was loud and unpleasant. I had the Duck Dynasty and the flavor was disappointingly ordinary. My wife had the steak/lobster special and enjoyed it even though they got her order wrong and fried her lobster instead of grilling it. They did correct the order but we waited quite awhile for them to do it. For dessert we were looking forward to the often praised Red Velvet cake but they were sold-out which was disappointing and surprised us since our reservation was at 7 pm. We opted for a chocolate mousse which was good but like the rest of the meal left us "expecting more"."

  • "Actually found this place on Saturday afternoon on Open Table when looking for a place to dine before Book of Mormon that night at the Fox. Reviews were great so we gave it a shot. Good thing we were eating early because the place was packed by the time we left. The house made drinks from the bar were great. They make their own ginger beer - yum! The lobster wontons as an app were yummy and the fried chicken with lobster mac & cheese is definitely something we'll be back for. While the service was very attentive and polite, things were a little slow to come out of the kitchen so we were a bit rushed at the end to get to our show. We want to go back again when we don't have a "deadline" so we can relax and enjoy the great food and drinks."

  • "The wait was a little longer than expected but, the cocktails were great and the live atmosphere made it exciting. The service certainly wasn't bad but, the waiter was hard to understand. But again, his enthusiam made up for any miscommunication. The neighborhood isn't great but, there's valet service and parking close was a breeze. The food was amazing! The settting was perfect. The apps were large and unique and the main course could not have been better. I've dined here twice (shark & unicorn fish). Ya, I was skeptical the first time but, ready to try anything the second. My date had the lobster tail on a great rice medley. I would recommend Poor Calvin's to anyone without hesitation."

  • "Before going to see a play at the Fox, we decided to try this restaurant based on other reviews on Open Table. We were glad we tried it. Our server was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. Our favorite was the Lobster Macaroni and cheese appetizer. The Seafood Melange entree was delicious, too. I told them it was my husband's birthday and they acknowledged it when we arrived. They also included a slice of cake for him. I work nearby and will definitely be back."

  • "We really enjoyed our dining experience before seeing Book Of Mormon. The food was very good. My Hawaiian fried rice was great, presently beautifully in a fresh half pineapple. The service was excellent. We arrived later than intended and the staff got us in and out quickly without feeling rushed. Our only complaint was that it was a bit chilly, even with the fireplace going, on a cold night. However, it was still a good time and we could recommend it."
