  • "Besides the fact they were out of several items from the menu (including their famous biscuits), the food we were served was bland. The service was also horribly slow."

  • "Get the fried green tomatoes appetizer, or get two..so delicious, but could pass on the crab cakes. Nice take on traditional comfort food. Staff was amazingly nice. We sat inside but would definitely request outdoor next time."

  • "I ordered their special and didn't like it. It was a flank steak with potatoes and the flank steak was fatty. My friend liked the shrimp and grits very much."

  • "The food was very good. The service was outstanding. The restaurant dining room is very pleasant and inviting. We will return the next time we are in Charleston."

  • "My husband and I were in town for the weekend and wanted to find a nice restaurant for dinner. We had heard of Poogans before, but it was always booked to full capacity whenever we tried to make a reservation. On this trip we got lucky and were able to get a late dinner reservation. We ordered the fried alligator salad for an appetizer and it was delicious. Even though it was fried, it wasn't greasy or heavy. I had the crab cakes for my entree. It was wonderful as well. It was loaded with big pieces of fresh crab. My husband had the pork chop, which was cooked perfectly and also very tasty. We had a great dining experience at Poogan's Porch, and look forward to trying their brunch on our next trip to Charleston!"

  • "I brought several VIPs to Poogan's Porch on a recommendation from a coworker. We were there on a Wednesday evening and there were dozens of happy faces everywhere. This dinner served as an excellent ice-breaker allowing everyone to relax. All the dishes were excellent and our VIPs were very thankful for the time, food, and conversation that came naturally. This restaurant is an excellent example of southern cooking at its best -- great seafood fresh from the docks, and some of the best buttermilk fried chicken you can find. Go and see for yourself."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 26th anniversary in downtown historic Charleston, SC. Poogan's Porch came highly recommended and it lived up to all our expectations. We tried 3 appetizers including a special She-Crab soup that was full of crab and had a nice spice to the finish. We also had fried pimiento cheese balls that were reminiscent of great fondue. Their fried green tomatoes were just perfect. Dinner was delicious as we tried one nightly special and one dish off the regular menu. I can't say enough good things about the destination place. The owner seated us and brought complimentary champagne. For a quiet dinner, I highly recommend the upstairs back dining room looking out over a garden spot. You can't go wrong."

  • "The food was fantastic! No one in our party had room for dessert. Sarah was our server and she was incredible! Always smiling and knew the menu. Can't wait to come back!"

  • "Poogan's has been my favorite Charleston restaurant since my first visit several years ago. This is a special place that never disappoints. The food is amazing, service always good, atmosphere lovely. No trip to Charleston is complete for me without dining at Poogan's."

  • "This was one of our favorite restaurants in the city. My mom and I had different meals, and both loved them. I had the salmon because I wanted something lighter, and she had the pork chop. Both were delicious. Our server was friendly. I think she had too many tables that night, but we were still very pleased overall. We would definitely eat there again."

  • "She crab soup, lukewarm, thick gluey, fritters were very nice, crispy skinned snapper, fish not seasoned at all. Grouper with risotto, maybe 4 oz. portion of fish, again not seasoned, could not detect any peas in the risotto. 7:30 pm and out of pecan pie, really!!!!!"

  • "The food here is exception and the service is amazing. We had the Pan Seared Sea Scallops and the Sweet Tea Glazed Salmon are these are great choices and I recommend them highly. The She Crab soup is a must have."

  • "We had a wonderful experience at Poogan's Porch. It was our anniversary, but the restaurant didn't know that, and we still felt very well-treated. The menu options were just right, covered steak to local seafood, interesting local appetizers, etc. The wine list was wonderful, and Michael gave us great direction in our choice. The restaurant is a lovely old house, and the atmosphere is casual elegance-very nice but not stuffy. The value for our meal and service was incredible; an appetizer, dinner, a nice wine, dessert & coffee all beautifully presented, for less than $130! Definitely a treat for a special occasion. This place is a local gem recommended by a friend; they absolutely lived up to it! We will definitely eat there again."

  • "Poogan's Porch was highly recommended by a colleague, particularly for brunch on the porch. Unable to find a table for brunch, we opted for dinner instead on our last night in town. We were thoroughly pleased. The hostesses were particularly engaging, and were able to seat us quickly even thought we had arrived a bit early. Our server was eager to please. We weren't rushed, but she gave us the fastest service of our trip. 3 of us had Calabash style seafood, which was fresh and thoroughly satisfying, generally lighter and less greasy than you might expect from ordinary frying methods. Our fourth member had the seared scallops and they were prepared and presented perfectly. We will definitely be back, and hope to check out the brunch scene."

  • "Great food; I had crusted snapper and my wife had the buttermilk chicken;both of us cleaned our plates; the menu did not disappoint; service never missed a step; always ready when you were. A great evening."

  • "My sister and I had dinner here the evening of the Cooper Bridge run. I wanted to try some low country fair and had read good reviews of this restaurant and I wasn't disappointed. I had the fried pimento cheese balls with green tomato jam as an appetizer (amazing!) and the signature buttermilk fried chicken as an entree(delicious!) The portions are huge so bring an appetite. We had spent the day sampling free food so sadly we had to pass on dessert. The chocolate pecan pie with bacon ice cream was truly intriguing. Our waiter was Mark and he was kind, helpful and fun to chat with. We were seated in the second floor dining room with open doors and a lovely breeze. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this restaurant."

  • "I've wanted to try this restaurant every time we've traveled to Charleston.Never could manage to get a reservation and the wait seemed very long. It doesn't seem quite as 'quaint' as reviewed, although there are some lovely antique pieces. We were promptly seated when we arrived (a plus) in the back dining room. This is directly under a speaker with piped in music. The problem with that is the selection of music and the volume at which it was played. We heard everything from ZZTop to 'elevator' jazz. It was very difficult to carry on a conversation and the music was just obnoxious at times. The food was tasty, but not outstanding. From time of seating to check was 45 minutes-felt very rushed."

  • "We were only in Charleston for 1 day this trip so when planning my dinner reservations there was no doubt in my mind that PP was the place. I have raved about it to everyone so taking them there was a no brainier. Our server Ford was the nicest young man. I am in the restaurant business and he was definitely one of the best servers I have ever had. Of course I started with the fried alligator salad... Cooked and seasoned perfectly! I wanted to have my usual seabass but alas it was not in season. I opted for the grilled pork chop with sweet potatoes gnocchi. Delicious! Everyone was extremely happy with dinner. Wanted to have pecan pie with bacon ice cream cause it sounded so darn interesting but we were too full. Superb!!"

  • "It was our first visit to Charleston and made a reservation upon a recommendation from a friend. We enjoyed our meal and were seated at our reserved time. We arrived a little early and were told that we could wait at the bar. The problem was that there wasn't any room at the bar! We tried to order a drink at the bar, but felt that we were in the way of the couples sitting there. The bartender was very, very nice and tried to make us feel welcome, but we very much felt in the way. A waiter came by and showed us the bench at the front door and said that we could wait there or on the porch. It was a 2 person bench, so I stood outside. The same waiter came by and offered the table by the door. I sat there, but felt in the way."

  • "My wife and I were seated on the rear patio section of the restaurant. There was another couple with a few wild little boys :) The manager (I assume) brought us a glass of champagne for having to be seated near them. That was a very thoughtful gesture. Having a young son of our own we were not really bothered. Ordered a snapper dish with blackeyed pea and cilantro risotto which was great..didn't get a lot of cilantro taste though which would have topped the dish off great..still very good though. Wife had pork chop with sweet potato gnocchi...and it was also very good. Didn't get any of their biscuits but we were pretty full so that wasn't such a big deal. Ambience could have been better. Don't think we even had music in the back."

  • "We had a lovely dinner at Poogan's Porch! Both of our meals were so delicious!! Our server, Sara, was so kind and just right for us! We shared an appetizer but would recommend one for Each person! We will be back soon!!"

  • "Had not eaten here in almost 20 years, and decided to see if it had changed. The back room where we were seated was not what I consider in the "old" section and was disappointing to me, but it did have a view of the back patio which was nice. Started out with the classic she-crab soup. It had an ok flavor (not the best I have had) but was lukewarm at best. My scallop entree as well as my husband's grouper were excellent, perfectly cooked with yummy sauces. Again going classic, ordered the bourbon pecan pie for desert but passed on the bacon ice cream and asked for vanilla instead. The pie, sadly, was not fresh and had an overwhelming butter flavor. I doubt that we will eat here again anytime soon."

  • "This was our first visit to Charleston. We ate a number of wonderful places, but we'll always come back to Poogan's. Everything from the mac & cheese to the fried chicken to the seafood was perfect."

  • "We've been to Poogan's Porch several times and we are never disappointed. The food is very good, the service is attentive, and the entire experience is great. We love visiting Charleston regularly, and Poogan's Porch is always a routine stop!"

  • "Poogan's is one of our favorite spots. This visit however, did not seem quite up to par. The waitress seemed more interested in the other group, therefore we waited very long for any type attention. The scallops were not cooked correctly and way below the usual beautiful presentation. Something seems different, quite a shame."

  • "We were promptly greeted, however immediately noticed the worn appearance of the entry hall and the dated framed autographs on the walls. We were taken to our table on the second floor which passed an open bussing station. While our server was friendly and enthusiastic the setting on the second floor was very tired, worn and dark. We shared the fried green tomatoes which was unremarkable. The tomatoes were overwhelmed by the breading. I had the crispy snapper and while the fish was fresh the prep was not worthy of the $28 price. The restaurant badly needs a facelift and menu makeover. Plan ahead and dine at Husk next door which is worthy of the price paid."

  • "We were there with friends, and were pleased that it was quiet enough for conversation. Our waitress was good, too. However, I got a pasta and seafood dish that was disappointing: there wasn't all that much shrimp or crab, and the pasta was only lukewarm."

  • "The service here was memorable, our host was really attentive and thoughtful. The house is lovely and comfortable, we were glad we had reservations, a steady steam of people w/o reservations were being turned away. Fried green tomatoes w/ pecan encrusted goat cheese were fabulous, as were my friends shrimp and grits. The spicy sausage in that dish pushed it past its local competitors in our estimation. I ordered the crispy skinned snapper. I did enjoy the dish, the cheddar grit cake, pulled pork, radish & arugula worked so well together, I am sad to say the snapper was overcooked. I would visit again for sure, be sure to get your reservations well in advance."

  • "I've been wanting to try Poogan's for years, but never had the opportunity until now. Unfortunately for my wife and I, we were left underwhelmed by the experience. This was our experience, so yours may be different, but in a nutshell we were disappointed after hearing so many good things and reading the rave reviews online. I don't have anything bad to say about Poogan's, and I may even eat there again. But ultimately for us, it just didn't live up to the hype."

  • "In a town of amazing restaurants, this place is a gem. It is everything wonderful about Charleston. My wife and I dined here and had one of the best meals. The atmopshere is perfection. The pork chop was one of the best pork chops I have ever had in my life. My wife's shrimp and grits were cooked amazingly. Service was on point and we felt so taken care of. We will certainly continue to come back to this place and continue to have perfect meals everytime."
