Poogan's Porch RestaurantConsistently goodEvery time we dine here we have a good experience. The food we ordered at this visit was very good. Though, I will have to say that I won't order the calabash flounder again. It was too "bready" for me. I thought it would have a light coating of flour but instead it came out very crispy and coating overpowered the flounder, which was actually very good once I got through all the breading!5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Value!Outstanding food at reasonable prices! Had a wondeful Filet for $29 and a tasty bottle of wine for $24.
Highly recommended.
Allan5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMDeliciousWe were a group of 6 that had a variety of dishes. Everyone was pleased with their choices. I had shrimp and grits to get in the low country mode. I was a bit wary since I am not a huge grits fan - but it was delicious.service was a tad slow but adequate. All in all a very nice experience.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMCharleston at its bestSet in downtown Charleston, Poogan's Porch has a historic feel and ambience, due mainly to the building/house it is located in. The Arugala salad starter was fresh and bright, with a goat cheese crostini on the side. For mains, my partner and I both ordered the shrimp & grits. The flavors popped in the sauce, the shrimp were plump and fresh, and the grits the right level of creaminess. In all, Poogan's Porch is a must-try for anyone stopping through Charleston. Note: parking is a bit hard to come by downtown, but there is a pay parking garage just across the street that makes it his restaurant very accessible.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMOur server Jennifer was awesome,Our server Jennifer was awesome, top notch! Great Job.
All the dishes were perfect, the duck entree was the best I've had in a long time.
Great job to all the staff!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved every thing about ourLoved every thing about our dinner at Poogans Porch. Will definitely return when back in Charleston. Thanks for the porch seating!!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMCosy, IntimateI liked the ample room between tables. The atmosphere is like someone's home. My friend and I split the seafood pasta dish for an additonal $5 fee. It was well-seasoned but a litle on the skimpy side: three little shrimp apiece and one scallop, but I gues that's what one expects in splitting an entre. The banana pudding was quintessential Southern--loved the crunchy cookie layers.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was outstanding. AllFood was outstanding. All four of us are picky eaters and we all found something to, not only enjoy, but think it to be outstanding. Restaurant was noisy but not in a bad way. Service was very good but she was busy so hard to be one one one attentive. We would definitely go there again.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMLove Poogan's PorchPoogan's Porch is my favorite restaurant in Charleston and has been for several years. It is a really neat place to begin with - it's a neat old house that has been renovated and converted to its current use. I have been there now about a half a dozen times for dinner. Each time I have been seated in a different room. Every room that I have been in thus far has been wonderful. The food has always been excellent. I think the shrimp and grits is the best in town. It's not soupy and instead has a blue crab gravy. Any place that makes grits with a tomato based broth puts that dish to shame. Moreover, Poogan's uses the wonderful tasso ham as well. I love this place. We celebrated the eve of my graduation there this weekend and it was superb.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMBachelor Party Gone RightAs several of us prepared for a bachelor party, a lot of research went into where we wanted to bring the groom-to-be. I am so glad we settled on Poogan's Porch. Since most of us were from out of town, we relied on Yelp reviews and other critical acclaim to find this gem of a restaurant. I would highly recommend the scallops for an appetizer and the plantation chicken for dinner. Both dishes are absolutely amazing! Everyone had an amazing time and a simply wonderful dinner!5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMVery NIceGreat time here. Really nice friendly staff. Very innovative renditions of southern classics, without the hoopla . Portions are the perfect size for what you pay ( and can eat). LOts of good wines by the glass or bottle.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGood times and good foodI'm a regular at Poogan's porch and the food is consistently good. My favorite is the sweet tea glazed salmon. Always cooked to perfection and an interesting combination. I highly recommend.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was great!I loved Poogan's Porch - the food was wonderful, the service was exceptional and the atmosphere was extremely comfortable while still being really nice. It felt like you were at a nice dinner at home. Don't miss trying the mac and cheese! This is definitely a place I would go back to time and time again.
Best,
Meg5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat appetizersOur party just split a bunch of appetizers, a main course, and a dessert. We loved the selection of great appetizers. Excellent food. The upstairs dining was a bit dark; the lighting was too dim for my eyes.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was absolutely amazing. The food was absolutely amazing. We both had the pimento fritters, as well as the plantation fried chicken and there is absolutely nothing I could complain about. The service, great. Our drinks stayed replenished, we were asked multiple times if we were comfortable, and the food was inquired about as well. The seating is a little close to other guests in some areas, so the noise level was slightly more than expected. But it was tolerable, and did not bother us. The building itself is beautiful. May I also add that the biscuits, are the best biscuits I have ever put into my mouth. The prices are fantastic. Neither of us were able to finish our meals. Perfect if you are staying in the mills house!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMHigh end low country. AmazingHigh end low country. Amazing food, and the dessert - chocolate pecan pie with buttermilk smoked bacon ice cream. Yowza.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, great for touristsThis great little restaurant is located walking distance from Charleston's historic district and offers some great local cuisine. The casual atmosphere makes it great for tourists as jeans are acceptable. We'll definitely visit again.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food, outstanding serviceVisited on Friday night with group of 5. No place to wait for table, bar area too crowded to even go up and get a drink. Waited a few minutes after reservation for table. But server was excellent, even got kitchen to add a fritter to starter so everyone at table could have their own. Food was really good (mac & cheese to die for, calabash shrimp wonderful). Menu somewhat limited, thought they would have more specials. Overall good experience, but wouldn't go for romantic date...too noisy and crowded.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMcharming and delectable! This was a pleasant surprise! We expected sumptuous traditional southern fare and there were several options that I'm sure would fit that bill. We both however decided on beef- rib eye and filet mignon, respectively - both dishes and accompaniments were outstanding that rivaled or exceeded any premium specialty steak restaurants. Our server, Jack was able, amiable and friendly and his excellent service added to enjoyment. In our 3 day stay in Charleston, my husband and I agreed that this dining experience was easily the best and most memorable of the trip.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMI WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND POOGAN'SI WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND POOGAN'S PORCH. GREAT FOOD !!!! LOVED THE AMBIENCE.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMBirthday DinnerMy wife and I went with another couple to celebrate. I felt the food was very good but would like to have had more spice in the Shrimp and Grits. Our waitress was an experienced Mexican lady who did a great job trying to get the mixed drinks just right. I would definitely go here again.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMPaulWe had a lovely dinner, food was GREAT! But our server, Paul was SUPER! Never forgot to check on us and always had a great SMILE on his face. This was our first experience w/Poogan's Porch and it will not be our last. We would love to try lunch also when we are in Charleston again. We brought some friends visiting California and they were DELIGHTED with the appetizers and the entrees we all ordered. DELICIOUS!

Dataw Island, Beaufort, SC5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyed this meal with ourEnjoyed this meal with our daughter when picking her up from CofC. Wow. An adorable place and excellent food. It gets rave reviews for a reason! The mac and cheese and fried green tomato appetizers were generous and delicious. The Buttermilk Fried Chicken, the Plantation Fried Chicken (both of which were moist), the Pan Roasted Duck and the Crispy Skinned Snapper were all absolutely fantastic. We are looking forward to the school year starting again so we'll have an excuse to visit again!5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMLast minute "stand in"Student son didn't want to go out for BBQ so went to Poogan's Porch...initially because I liked the mix of small plates, overall menu, and prices (I was looking at the lunch menu). Surprisingly not full on a Tues night 'n got 6:45 reserve at 3:30p. Dinner was terrific for 4 of us...heirloom tomato salad, she crab soup, two good-sized crab cakes (slightly spicy) apps; fried chicken, bistro beef, duck breast and fish entrees; blueberry cobbler a la mode 'n choc pecan "pie" w bacon ice cream dessert. Widely touted biscuits were slightly chewy; crab cakes could have served as small entree; pecan pie was good but not gooey enuf for me. I would go back and highly recommend; lunch menu would be a very good value.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMa favorite in charlestonPoogans is one of my top two picks in Charleston. We go about twice a year, and the rest of the year I dream of it! The Plantation Chicken is my favorite meal on earth.
I love the decor, the quiet noise level, and service almost as much as the food!4/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food, good service inGood food, good service in a comfortable Charleston environment.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and service. BookGreat food and service. Book early to avoid late night seating. We went early (5:00) and were seated and served very promptly. Food was delicious and served piping hot. Maybe not a great place for a quiet romantic dinner, but warm ambience and a friendly, casual atmosphere.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExceptional service!Food was very good. Possibly the best fried shrimp I have ever eaten. Service was impeccable! Celebration of our anniversary and we were brought lovely glasses of champagne. Thank you Rosa for being such a wonderful server!4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMHad dinner there recently.Had dinner there recently. Was promptly seated at our appointed reservation time and enjoyed good service and food. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves at the other tables around us which to me is a good sign. Would definitely go back again.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMHad shrimp and grits, husbandHad shrimp and grits, husband had award winning snapper dish that had pulled pork on same plate, daughter had sweet tea glazed salmon and risotto and my son had the kids chicken fingers with homemade potato chips and all were very good. Shared the fried alligator salad as an app with a basket of biscuits which were also very good. Wait staff was very nice and efficient. Host desk could have dawned genuine smiles (makes you feel like an inconvenience when that happens) but that isn't enough to keep you from coming in. Would def go again.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother great meal at Poogan'sThird visit to this local gem in 18 months, and we live in NJ. This time we took our adult children. Enjoyed the ambiance of the old house and porches.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMPoogan's Porch was a realPoogan's Porch was a real gem! The food was delicious, the service very good (including not only the waitress but also our busser, who was very attentive). I had the fried shrimp platter with the pimiento cheese slaw and home fried chips - delicious! The breading was perfect and the shrimp was fried to perfection. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits, which he said was delicious. We finished off our meal with the chocolate pecan pie, topped with vanilla ice cream - a bit smallish, but still delicious. A definite "re-visit" when in Charleston again.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst Open Table reservation,First Open Table reservation, all around very good category, yummy food, split up a great salad for us,smiling waitress, a nice welcome to a great city, the sauteed fish with a little pulled pork BBQ and fried grits cake was a great combo.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMMy husband chose this restaurantMy husband chose this restaurant due to its haunted history - I agreed based on the reviews and the menu. We had an early dinner reservation (5:30 pm) and got one of the three tables on the upstairs outdoor balcony. We were waited on promptly and the food was served at a reasonable rate based on what we ordered. The biscuts with honeybutter were perfectly Southern and a great way to tide you over until the meal arrived. My husband had the Local Seafood Pasta, which was perfectly cooked and just the right size. I had the Pan Seared Duck, which was great - not overly greasy with a tasty sauce, and the potato dumplings were excellent. The wine list was extensive with a wide variety of types and prices. Overall, it was a great experience4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMPoogan's had a wonderful ambiance.Poogan's had a wonderful ambiance. It was casual, yet classy. Service was great, and the staff was friendly.

Food was wonderful! You have to eat "southern" so we ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken, AWESOME! and this from a group of "girls" who don't eat fried food. The She Crab soup was one of the best we had. Waiter was OK, not as attentive as we would have liked. Would we visit again - Yes.4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMThe quinoa salad and crabThe quinoa salad and crab cake appetizers were excellent. Dinners were very good. Our server was very attentive. One amusing exchange was when I ordered a Sazerac at the bar and the bartender thought it was scotch and Drambuie. Didn't think there was any barkeep in the South who couldn't make a Sazerac.4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMBest buttermilk fried chickenBest buttermilk fried chicken I've ever had! And biscuits to die for.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMThis restaurant was recommendedThis restaurant was recommended to us by friends when we mentioned we were going to Charleston. The food was amazing!! It was a bit noisy (not what we expected) but we attributed this to the specific group of people at the table across from us, not the restaurant itself. We will definitely be adding this to out itinerary for the next trip!!4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was a great night. OurIt was a great night. Our servicer was great, friendly, knowledgeable of menu.
