Diner Reviews
  • " We were seated at a nice table by the window and everyone we came in contact with was friendly and helpful. There is a large, varied selection of entrees and we all enjoyed our meals. It is a beautiful old house and someplace very "Charleston" to take folks from out of town."

  • "My family loved the atmosphere and food om this restaurant! It's fun eating in an old house named after a dog (R.I.P. Statue in thr front yard)?? The food was awesome; I had the melt-in-your mouth scallops, while others had the fresh Carolina shrimp and the tasty Shrimp and Grits. We were too full for dessert. Our family loved it!"

  • "Great food and atmosphere. Very charming venue in historical district. So many great options to choose from. Sarah, our server did a great job helping us decide and we were not disappointed. Also, loved the history behind the building. So many great restaurants to choose from but we are glad we chose this one."

  • "We went here for my birthday on a Sunday evening. It was very crowded but we came early and only had to wait a few minutes to get seated. The servers were very friendly and personable. I could tell they sincerely wanted to make the guest feel comfortable and have a good time. My husband is not the adventurous type when it comes to food while I am. I found that we both found delicious food that we enjoyed. My husband got the Plantation Chicken which he licked the plate clean. The Fried Oyster Salad is the best one I have had in Charleston yet. The food is upscale without being too pretentious. Great Southern comfort food!"

  • "My wife and I went here for a date night and were not disappointed. The food was excellent. I had the grilled pork chops with brussel sprouts and sweet potato gnocchi. My wife had the prime rib with asparagus and blue cheese sauce. Both meals were great and the meat portions were larger than we anticipated. The wedge salad was very tasty and a relatively large. Overall, the portions were large than I expected for a upscale restaurant."

  • "My wife and I were a little disappointed. We were just not impressed with the food. The she crab soup and biscuits were good. the rest of the meal was just ok."

  • "This was a great dining experience. We reserved a table on the 2nd floor balcony and had a great breeze and view throughout dinner. The food was amazing and the portions were good. Great wine list too if that's your thing. We would definately eat here again!"

  • "My boyfriend and I dined here as a slightly less expensive option to Husk (although we stopped by Husk beforehand for a drink and will be making reservations for our next trip to Charleston). My boyfriend, who is more critical about food than I am, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered. Our waiter was very knowledgable and helpful when we couldn't decided between the fried chicken and the ahi tuna. We ended up with the mac and cheese, she-crab soup, the snapper dish, and the ahi tuna dish, all of which were excellent."

  • "It was my daughter and I's first time visiting Charleston, so we had no idea what restaurants were good. We overheard an elderly couple raving about Poogan's, so we decided to go. We absolutely LOVED the food! We didn't find out until afterward that Poogan's is haunted, but even now that we know, we would go back anyway!! My daughter had sweet tea glazed salmon with mint risotto and asparagus. She gets salmon at a lot of places and confessed that Poogan's was way better than Red Lobster's (and Hyman's!). I had calabash shrimp which was out of this world! The biscuits were nice and fluffy, and the fried green tomatoes were exceptional as well. We never order dessert, but we did here, and the peanut butter pie is to die for!"

  • "We were at first attracted by the lovely old restored house in historic downtown Charleston. Inside was cozy with a traditional southern ambience in keeping with the locale. The staff was very friendly but not overtly fawning. There was a nice representation of local fare (local seafood, low country cuisine) at the going rates one expects in a tourist area. Overall it was a very pleasant experience, and I'd recommend it for anyone who enjoys great local cuisine with traditional Charleston ambience."

  • "This was our first time at Poogan's Porch. The service, food, and overall atmosphere was completely wonderful. Roxanne, our server was so knowledgable of the menu and answered all questions we had. We ordered crab cakes and tried alligator for the first time as an appetizer. Both were so fresh and delicious! The crab was the best I've ever tasted. For entrees we had buttermilk fries chicken and the duck. Both were freshly cooked and delicious as well. They also had refreshing cocktails. We will definently be back to Poogan's!"

  • "Unfortunately Poogan's is living off the past and its scores are averaged based on previous diner scores inflating the overall rating. The restaurant staff was either not there or interrupting conversations......server staff bringing first courses to the table with "Ta Da" in your ear while your date is talking isn't needed. The special salad was tasty but a disappointment at a high price and serving size of four bites. The entrees were over complicated with too many flavors for the shrimp and grits and burying the poor small shrimp and grits with a thick paste for a sauce. Three scallops the size of a quarter were seared well but again the establishment must have been saving portions for the massive crowds that never showed"

  • "We were looking for a great Charleston find that would give my in-laws a taste and sense of the many wonders of our local dining experience. Poogan's Porch was perfect, an easy treat for us, many menu choices so no one would go wrong, and an atmosphere they can't get anywhere else. This is a must add to the list for when people come to town and you want something nice but not too fancy, with great food and a fun environment!"

  • "We wanted to have some southern cooking and picked Poogans. The fried chicken was a thick concrete battered chicken and overly salted, the scallops were tasty but again someone must of dumped a bucket of salt in the dish. It was the same for the ribs and the grouper."

  • "Wonderful atmosphere with impeccable service. A gem hidden along Queen's Street."

  • "My husband and I went to Poogan's Porch at the recommendation of some locals. We had never been to Charleston before, and if our meal at Poogan's was any indication of the quality of food and service in the area, we knew we were in for a spectacular weekend. All of the ingredients in each meal are brought in locally and each meal was outstanding! Our server was very knowledgeable about the food and wine and made our dinner that much more enjoyable. If we ever make it back to Charleston, we will definitely go back! Oh, and you must get a reservation, especially on a weekend night!"

  • "Make reservations early. Popular spot. Walkable from most hotels in historic area. Creative menu with southern staples. Gluten free accommodating. Service was good. Not super personable, but not bad. Average portion sizes."

  • "My wife and I recently celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary in Charleston. Having lived in Charleston for ten years, I was familiar with all the fine dining options. We decided to go with a 'low-key' evening and dined at Poogan's. I have no regrets. Being a bourbon fan, we started with a few drinks at Husk and then moved to Poogan's for our meal. The service was exceptional and the food was fantastic. Thanks for a wonderful evening."

  • "Our server was informed, friendly and attentive. The food was beyond our expectations. Not overly expensive by Charleston standards, the fried chicken and scallops were outstanding. The pecan pie was truly memorable. Would return in a heartbeat!"

  • "This quaint restaurant was just a few doors down from the hotel we stayed at. Although very little from the front entrance, it was surprisingly roomy inside. We enjoyed a great dinner, especially the shrimp and grits. Our only complaint was that we were sitting directly under the air conditioner and were very cold. The service was friendly and attentive and we enjoyed a great time. We would definitely come back."

  • "There are so many positives. Service was excellent. Wine was excellent. Food was excellent. But the restaurant needs an update. There are so many charming restaurants in Charleston. The dining room here doesn't compete, ambience wise."

  • "Poogan's was a very nice, comfortable Southeren dining experience with excellent food and drink. Our cozy table was in a small room...one of many in this old house...that was pleasantly comfortable. Great start with suburb cocktails. Fried pimento cheese balls were a nice appetizer shared by two of us. Waitstaff was attentive and knowledgeable. I asked for the "must have" Low Country dish for a Norherner and was rewarded with excellent shrimp and grits. Pasta dish my wife had proved equally good. Bottom line...a very comfortable dining experience with outstanding food."

  • "I was so looking forward to dining at what I thought a quaint and romantic restaurant. This could not be further from the truth as my husband and I were seated upstairs in a large upstairs nondescript room somewhere smack in the middle of 3 or 4 very rowdy bachelorette parties. We had drinks and appetizers and promptly left. Another couple left after only drinks. If you want a romantic and quiet meal, best to choose someplace else. What we did eat and drink was fine but unfortunately we were not able to enjoy. We mentioned our issue to the waiter but he laughed it off and said it was wedding season."

  • "This restaurant epitomizes the term southern fine dining. We felt at home and comfortable from the time we entered until we left. Three of the people at our table ordered the same dinner and one was different. There was no need for doggie bags because everyone at the table completely finished their dinner. This was not because the dinner was small but because once one starts eating, it is almost impossible to put the utensils down. The wine suggested for dinner complemented the food and not over power it. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu, how each dish is prepared and the wine to complement the food."

  • "We celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary, our waitress Sara was perfect! We started with she crab soup and wonder why it was not voted best in Charlston! It would be hard to pick which was best since we had eaten the night before and had the voted best she crab soup. My husbands shrimp and grits was wonderful and my seared scallops amazing! The hazelnut ice cream sandwich left us wanting more! As we were leaving a boxer and a Great Dane pup napped on the the front porch at their masters feet. Sara went above and beyond by taking a frame able picture to save the romance! A very special place for us!"

  • "The city of Charleston is known for its low country cuisine, and Poogan's Porch offers some of the best! Located in a beautiful old Victorian home in the historic district, Poogan's Porch is a real treasure. We sat in a front room by a window and observed many ghost tours that stopped in front of the restaurant to possibly catch a glimpse of "Zoe", one of Charleston's famous ghosts that resides at Poogan's Porch. We loved the ambience that created! The food is some of the best there is in Charleston! You MUST try the pimento cheese fritters and the crab cakes. The wine list is extensive, the service fantastic, and the various entrees we had (salmon, shrimp, combo seafood platter) were all EXCELLENT! Wonderful evening!"
