Diner Reviews
  • "We attended Ponty Bistro as apart of our Sunday Brunches. We were not disappointed. The small restaurant and eager to please staff sat my guest of 12 immediately. Our waitress informed us of the specials. Everyone order drinks, appetizers and meal. Not one person was disappointed, in a group that can be "hard to please". The escargot, steak, yucca mash (light and airy) the ginger martini were a perfect antidote to Sunday. The chef was gracious enough to stop by and greet us and the staff was amazing. We will be back and as many said a great kept secret. Our guest from Canada, Pa and the mid west had a great time. Great news they're expanding in Harlem. Great luck"

  • "I was at Ponty Bistro last week for lunch. The Calabash soup was terrific and so were the mussels with African spices. Had the tiramirsu (which I've had better), but the creme brulee which my sister had was excellent. Not bad for a prixe fixe. I liked the food so much that two days later, I introduced my friend to Ponty Bistro in which we were there for dinner. Friendly service and the food did not disappoint. Am going with a friend this week for lunch and will introduce her to Ponty Bistro. I want to try some other foods. Looking forward to lunch and spreading the word about this small restaurant with excellent food!"

  • "This was an excellent find as my boyfriend and I were perusing OpenTable for restaurants in a new neighborhood. The service was good, the food was delicious, and the prices were reasonable. We will be back to try more of the menu! The only issue was that it's a little narrow and our table felt like it was right in the middle of things--waiters kept having to squeeze past our small table to get to those in the next row. They could probably take out a few tables to make it more comfortable."

  • "The owner of this restaurant is great. Last time I was here I was with a party of 10 for a friends bday. He was not only the owner, but that day he took special care of us as the host, server and chef as well. I mentioned this time that I was with the big party a few months back and again he checked in personally to make sure we enjoyed the entire experience. I can't compliment this reasonably priced, delicious gem of unique taste and flavors. Whether you like mussels, meat, seafood risotto or salad you really can't go wrong."

  • "What a find! Service was friendly, attentive and helpful. The chef came out to greet us warmly--made us feel so at home. But the food is what will ultimately bring us back and tell all our friends. Standouts were the stunning crispy tuna appetizer -- so fresh and perfectly seared and seasoned, with an amazing silky texture, and the Moules Africana in a full-flavored broth seasoned with coconut milk and lemongrass. Can't wait to go back for both of these and try a few more dishes as well."

  • "I have lived in the neighborhood for about a year and this was my third time at Ponty Bistro. I keep coming back because is the food is that good. The mussels are fantastic and I highly recommend the risotto."

  • "The food was flat out amazing. Place was jammed got a table in less than 5 min. Tight quarters but the food and service makeup for it."

  • "I had the poulet yassa. It was absolutely phenomenal! The chicken was perfectly cooked and the tomatoes and onions in the sauce on top tasted fresh and perfectly delicious. The place is fairly pricy but worth the money. I will definitely be returning! It's been 4 days and I'm still raving about my meal. All of my friends are as well. I went with a group of 5 college kids but the service was still great. We met the cook and he was so friendly and carefree. Loved him. The white sangria was amazing as well! Seriously just adore this restaurant. It's a place you must try!"

  • "I made reservation for 2 for an 8:30 sitting and got confirmation. When we arrived there was no receptionist to greet us, and there was a line of patrons in the middle aisle - not clear if all had reservation, but I was told we had to stand in line and would be sitted on a first come, first serve basis. There was no table at the desert stage from what we could see, and standing in that line in our coats while the waiters were using the same to move around was a nightmare. The restaurant was clearly overbooked and didn't care. On a special Valentine's night this lack of professioanlis was even more upsetting. I will not come back."

  • "saw this restaurant on Groupon and thought the menu looked great unfortunately did no purchase the Groupon since it was a celebration but wish I would have - the food was fantastic - not sure what a "foodie" would think but of us had no complaints at all - the filet mignon was wonderful as was the reduction it was in, the wild mushroom risotto was fantastic as were both rack of lamb dishes - they have an added bonus of 2/4/1 Martinis on Sundays which was thoroughly enjoyed by several in the group. All in all I would highly recommend Ponty Bistro -"

  • "Loved Ponty Bistro! The food was unique with a mixture of African and French spices and options and the service was outstanding. It is a small restaurant so it's more suited for a party of 2 or 4, but it wasn't especially loud. It's definitely not a cheap place, but for what you get it's more than reasonable. My wife and I shared the truffle mac and cheese and the french onion soup, which were great while I had the sirloin steak and my wife had a shrimp special and then we shared the french crepe for dessert. All excellent. We really enjoyed our meal and despite being seated for over 2 hours, we didn't once feel any pressure from the staff. They really couldn't be nicer. Highly recommended!"

  • "Ponty's was a welcome addition to the neighborhood, and continues to provide excellent and interesting food, and a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere. The African spices are a treat to the taste buds."

  • "Very good food. Very attentive service. Our waiter was a young Senegalese man who confused a couple of orders, but he was trying his best and was kind. The restaurant was complete full by the time that we were leaving at 7:30PM. This is our 2nd time here, and we will return. Highly recommend this place for the food, but the drinks are nothing to talk about."

  • "Given the chef's training and the menu prices, I expected more flavor in my dish. I had the Chilan sea bass on a bed of spinach artichokes and carrots. It was fine but bland. My dinings companions seemed to be fine with their dishes but I don't think any of us will return."

  • "We'd looked at the photos of dinner dishes and were eager for the different cuisine being offered. We were able to go only for brunch which was individual (not standard), but not as unusual as dinner would have been. Service was delightful and we certainly will return for a dinner meal."

  • "Loved the combo of African Senegalese/French food. Portions were decently sized, not the usual small French portions. Food was great; everybody in my party enjoyed their dishes. I definitely recommend the Moules Africana. Dinner can be a little pricey but it's worth it if you just want to splurge on an exotic dinner. They dim the lights later in the evening, providing you with a nice romantic type setting."

  • "African-French....everything was excellent - the chef accomodated a special request by coming to the table to discuss the diner's preferences and executed it perfectly. Service was highly attentive, all servers friendly and helpful.and our reservation honored on time, Loved it!"

  • "We met another family here and the 8 of us enjoyed a relaxed dinner. The place is very narrow so the servers are hustling and bumping into guests' chairs - but always with an apology. The food was interesting and good- especially the risottos and the veal chop. Would probably dine here again."

  • "We have learned to enjoy this wonderful neighborhood bistro on off-hours since the tables are crammed in a very narrow tight space and during peak hours the noise is deafening. But go when the crowds aren't there and you will have a great meal."

  • "Food was surprisingly fantastic! Restaurant was a bit crowded on a saturday night but only waited about 10 minutes before being seated. Apps and entrees very tasty!"

  • "This is not a fancy place. More like a neighborhood kinda place. The food was also not super fancy, but it was very tasty and good. There is no bland food here. We had the crispy calamari with a spicy sauce..yummy. The lamb sandwich was really good. The place seems to be owned and operated by a Senegalese chef and staff. They are very friendly and seem to care about the food and the service."

  • "Found this place on OpenTable and have been back three times since. The service, the staff and the food are outstanding. I would recommend this to anyone who's looking for a very intimate evening with not your run of the mill foods. One note - the place is very small so if you're not comfortable with Manhattan-style seating and sitting close to one another, this might not fit for you. If you can handle it or want to try - it's well worth the venture into this gem!"

  • "Had a very nice dining experience with tasty food. 8 PM Saturday dinner for 3. Fried calamari was done perfectly. Escargot was (over) drenched with sauce but OK. My Poulet Parmesan was crisp and juicy on a wonderful bed of fettuccine. My partners had steak which they liked. Dinner for 3 with 2 appetizers, 3 entrees, 2 desserts and $35 wine was just under $200. We thought it was a decent value."

  • "Ate lunch with 2 coworkers. The food was flavorful and delicious. We ordered the nicoise salad, grilled tuna steak, and seafood pasta. Everyone was very happy with their food. The serving sizes were reasonably generous. No leftovers, but no hungry bellies either. All I can say is there were many more things on the menu we are eager to return to try. The food is generally familiar with slight twists in flavor to make it "African." We checked-in on Yelp and were happy to find a free dessert (with 2 entrees) offer. We took the housemade tiramisu to go. IT WAS DIVINE. I really dislike t-misu but licked the takeout box clean."

  • "My stuffed sole was very good. My husband ordered the seafood spaghetti the dish should have had been only in a garlic wine sauce ,but it came with cheese. By the time we were sure of this we notified the waiter . Too late for another dish as we enjoyed the delicious Creme brûlée The chef approached our table confirmed there was a mix up In kitchen. He removed entree from check. He was very good, and let us know we should come again Maybe we will."

  • "Our food at Ponty was great -- my truffle mac and cheese was totally delicious. My friends enjoyed their food and drinks too. The only thing lacking here was their service. Our waiter probably said less than 3 words total to us the whole entire meal, until he explained that the brunch price fix was cash only. Beyond the fact that this made no sense, it was incredibly annoying that he couldn't muster one pleasantry during our meal, but when it came to getting paid he was quite forceful. All to say, if you need a good brunch, Ponty is fine. But be prepared for a little bit of gruff with your meal."

  • "I went to Ponty Bistro with a few friends for dinner this past Saturday. The wine was the best part of the meal. The mushroom risotto was pretty good, but my friends, who each ordered a special of the night - the Sea Bass - were none too impressed. It was buttery and heavy, which is not what Sea Bass should be ever. I always like to try new places, which is how I ended up here, as I was going to a show at Irving Plaza after, but this is not a place I will be returning to or recommending, unfortunately."

  • "This was our second visit and it was as excellent as the first. A small intimate restaurant however still lively and bustling without being too noisy and feeling crowded. Amazing specials, decadent cuisine infused with a french and african flare! The african mussels are to die for. We will definitely be back to Ponty Bistro - a great place to bring out of town guests as well."

  • "Ponty Bistro serves flavorful, not to be found everywhere, variations of the usual suspects: seafood risotto, Senegalese slow cooked bronzini or chicken and sliced steak, for example. Each tastes differently than in conventional restaurants and the difference is really worth tasting. However(always there is an "however"), the wine list is, to put it kindly, limited and pedestrian, and the service is too fast. It is small restaurant and you sense they want to keep the tables turning over. Go if you are in the neighborhood, but don't make it the focal point of the evening."
