Diner Reviews
  • "My friends and I walked around the park enjoying all the gardens, and then ate a wonderful brunch indoors (we needed the AC after walking around outside in July!). We had lots of fun in a special atmosphere! Thank-you all!"

  • "The Pond House has become a traditional half-way summer meeting place for me and my cousin who live in opposite directions. The weather was very warm and humid and the outside eating area unshaded, so we ate inside. The food selection was wonderful and the ambiance pleasant, but outside would have been preferable. We loved taking a stroll after by the pond and around the flower beds."

  • "The rose gardens in Elizabeth Park are beautiful in late June, so a visit to the Pond House and a tour of the rose gardens should be an annual event for all of us who live in the area. The Pond House does get very busy so a reservation is recommended, but there is always ice cream to purchase outside if you forget!"

  • "this was my first dinner at the Pond House Café and I was pleasantly surprised by the superb food! They know how to go way beyond a great lunch menu! My only complaint? No vegetable with the meat. The price would have been reasonable except for this lack."

  • "The Pond House Café in historic Elizabeth Park turns 15 this year. Louis Lista and his team have created one of the most popular and beloved restaurants in the greater Hartford area. The grilled Rueben is the best ever; better than NYC. My aunt who is 82 brought a group of her friends here from out of town, and they all ordered the Rueben! They still talk about it. But, everything is great. I love the creative and interesting salads, and love the crab cakes. The menu itself is an art form of food. The outdoor patio overlooks the pond, and the building is surrounded by wonderful gardens and pathways. After dining, you need to walk over to the 2.5 acre ROSE GARDEN, and also the perennial, annual, and several hidden gardens."

  • "A nice walk in the rose garden, girl talk, then an afternoon peach Sangria, and a wonderful lunch. Sat outside and watched the ducks with a glass of wine under a shade umbrella. Very relaxing. Will put on one of my favorite spots :) Waitress was very attentive, cleared dishes away, clearly paying attention to us."

  • "We had Ms. Astor's chicken salad and it is the favorite of many at this restaurant. Granddaughter had Hamburger and waffle fries, excellent. The food is always great, the service good and the only trouble was the noise level. It was quite loud. being a very humid day, we opted to eat inside, but I much prefer the patio dining and make sure to walk through the gardens."

  • "The ambiance on the outdoor patio is perfect (except the seats that seem to slope downward). Romantic little place next to Elizabeth Park Rose Garden. Unfortunately, the food didn't seem up to par with the rest of the place; though this was my first time dining here."

  • "People know about the Rose Gardens in Elizabeth Park but the hidden treasure is the Pond House Cafe. Great food and a local hot spot for Park visitors."

  • "Lovely lunch. Salad was fresh and creative. Very busy with people waiting in line for tables, however I did not fee rushed."

  • "We have been to the Pond House many, many times over the years and we especially love being out on the patio and having a long relaxed lunch. During the week nobody rushes us. We often bring guests for brunch. We wish you would bring back the pie in the mason jar! The sangrias are excellent."

  • "Just discovered the Pond House last year, and haven't stopped raving about it to everyone I know. On Monday, I brought relatives from Ohio and hoped it would be a nice experience. We were not disappointed. Food and service was excellent, and everyone kept saying how great everything was. Would love to try the brunch someday."

  • "Despite making reservations ahead of time and including a special request, our party of four was not happy with the attitudes of the staff. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and the hostess said "you have to wait five more minutes, it is not 1:00". Did she think that in 5 minutes a table would magically appear?? Most staff had grumpy looks, like we don't want to be here, nor wait on you. All need a refresher in customer service and personality checks. Food was good, but had run out of quiche by 1:00?? No peach sangria either. For a Tuesday afternoon, it was extremely busy and very noisy. Our request for a birthday celebration never was mentioned, our table was great. Unsure if we would return."

  • "Wanted to find a nice and interesting place on my way to Boston . . . What a find !!! My son, who's somewhat critical, loved the chicken wrap and even loved the apple walnut salad. To please a picky teenage boy means you've reached the major leagues . . . KUDOS !!!"

  • "Salads were nice. Don't serve Jambalaya until you have eaten a few in New Orleans. Yellow rice?"

  • "We booked a table many days in advance but still had to wait before being seated for Sunday brunch. It then took over 20 minutes before our waitress appeared to take our orders. There was a distinct garbage smell on the outside terrace where we were. The food when it eventually arrived was so-so: e.g. Eggs "Florentine" only had a few strands of the spinach its name implies but lots of potatoes instead. All in all, this was a disappointing experience for the entertainment of our out-of-town guests and an embarrassment for us.,"

  • "We recently took my mother out for lunch at the Pond House. The dual brunch/lunch menu was great. Our dishes were creative, well presented and delicious! Afterwards we enjoyed a stroll around the gardens. Our only -- minor-- complaint was that the service was a bit slow."

  • "Excellent brunch on outside patio with as the name implies a nice view of the pond replete with ducks, geese and assorted wildlife. The gardens and flowers of Elizabeth Park adjacent to the restaurant offer a great place to wander around and enjoy a sunny day."

  • "The Pond House Cafe Sunday brunch is so good. I had the portobello and pesto omelet, which came with corn bread and home fries. Super fluffy eggs, large portion size. It's right in Elizabeth Park, which is gorgeous this time of year. You can't even tell you're in the city."

  • "Wonderful atmosphere and on a sunny day, you can enjoy the outside, while dining. the food is delicious and the waitstaff that brings it to you is informed, courteous and punctual. They've done some improvements and look to be expanding their patio area. I've only gone for brunch or lunch, but having the fire pit outside, looks like it would add some great ambience and added warmth on a cool summer night."

  • "Although we have eaten at the Pond House numerous times, tonight it seemed to lack something. The food was good, but there was a very flat feeling. Service was slow and even though our food was good, there were complaints from other tables around us. Maybe it was just an off night, but for a Saturday evening,it was very slow. I hope that this usually excellent spot isn't fading."

  • "No attempt to accommodate our request for a window table. Soup only lukewarm, not hot. Very noisy; hard to hear one another."

  • "We went to see the roses, but didn't see so many because it was early. However, we saw plenty of flowers and the pond with it's fountain and with the crane and ducks was beautiful. We were seated immediately and waited on quickly. Our lunch was plentiful and absolutely delicious. I had Mrs. Astor's chicken salad sandwich served on cranberry nut bread with a delicious side salad. My friend had the grilled cheese with avocado that was served on hearty country bread with a macaroni salad on the side. Both dishes were ample and even though we both were feeling full, we couldn't stop eating because it was so yummy! Am planning to go back next week just to enjoy another lovely lunch at the Pond Café!"

  • "This was the first time taking my new arrivals to town--brother-in-law and mother-in-law to Elizabeth Park and the Pond House Cafe for the rose gardens and lunch. It was a great day and all enjoyed our lunch there. The food was served quickly, tasted fantastic and very plentiful to the point of take home the extra generous leftovers. The food was fresh--much of which is grown just outside in the beautiful park gardens for salads and extras. Service was excellent and wait staff didn't hover--brought extra iced tea, before I knew I needed more. I had made reservations through this site because at this time of the year as the rose gardens come into bloom, the restaurant gets busier. This is a great restaurant and should be visited again!"

  • "We celebrated our 58th anniversary at the Pond House on a beautiful June day. Last year we took our twin daughters and their daughters to a grand birthday celebration for "our girls""

  • "Love this restaurant nestled in the heart of Elizabeth park. The food here never disappoints. The main course was well presented and the dessert was to die for. We had strawberry rhubarb cobbler and our friends had the carrot cake, both were delicious. Love that it is one of the few restaurants that has an on site pasry chef, not something out of a box. We were able to sit outside amongst the flowers and pond view. One of our favorite restaurants."

  • "We enjoyed an Anniversary Dinner Thursday night. Asked for outside, since it was a beautiful night and watched Cranes, Birds, Dogs, Bunnies and People around the Lake surrounded by a number of folks out for dinner, two groups, other couples and a family of four. Food was thoughtfully prepared; interesting specials; excellent desserts. Brought our own wine but enjoyed ‘unusual’ cocktails nicely and thoughtful service from Yovani, who the Hostess introduced when we were seated. A Romantic night out, good food, lots of interesting people (chatted with two ladies at a neighboring table about Health Care), great views and a perfect place to just have drinks, catch-up with friends, enjoy dinner-out or celebrate a Special Event! Recommended!"

  • "Let me start out by saying the food and service weren't necessarily our issue this visit. The server did her best to cheer us up after a terrible seating. My whole reason for going to the Pond House for brunch was to sit on the patio, (special occasion for my daughter - who had never been). I made the reservation for an "umbrella table on the patio". We unfortunately were not accommodated. We were asked to wait for the patio, which we did, only to be seated in an odd enclave table in the direct sun. Unfortunately the only other option was to move inside. The party with the reservation after us got their umbrella table :(. Very disappointed! Not sure how tables are given out at this restaurant, but the whole experience doesn't seem fair."

  • "I've been to the Pond House Cafe several times and love this wonderful little gem of a place. This visit, however, was not up to par. I ordered the nachos and was disappointed at the poorly-assembled plate, with a minimal amount of cheese (it looked nothing like the picture in the menu -- nothing!). The flavors were good, but seriously, how difficult is it to make nachos? And for nearly $10, why so skimpy with the cheese? My companion ordered the burger, which was fine…although you could do better at Plan B or Max Burger, which of course specialize in hamburgers. She enjoyed the lemon meringue dessert very much. The service was good, as always, but this most recent visit was quite disappointing and not up to Pond House standards. "

  • "First time at Pond House Cafe and it was a very pleasant surprise. Cute restaurant. Service was very good as was the brunch fair we ordered. (I did order my poached eggs well, but they were underdone, otherwise everything else was excellent!) Sat outside, thankfully it was a nice warm morning. Not sure how the ambience is inside. Looking forward to returning for another try!"

  • "Had a small get-together here last Sunday, 5/19/14. Food was great; you can do BYOB even though they have a liqour license now; the waitstaff was extremely accommodating. Lovely decor- modern; Andy Warhol's "Jackie" on the wall! Will definitely be back!"

  • "This location is great for outdoor dining with views of the pond and park. The food is normally good. The Mrs. Astor Chicken Salad Sandwich is excellent even though they did serve mine with two burnt end pieces of toast which disappointed me. The only thing I wish they would improve is the speed of service. The server we had didn't check up to see if anything was needed, didn't ask how our food was, and forgot requested drink refills. It seems the same each time I go. It must have something to do with the servers trying to cover too many tables. "

  • "The Pond House is a lovely spot any time of the year but especially during the Spring and summer months when the Rose Garden and flowers are in bloom. It's a great way to begin or end your dining at the Pond House. The restaurant is a small and special place. It has an indoor dining room and a very special great room for special occasions. the porch is open during the warmer months and it looks out on to the Pond! The food is innovative and tastefully prepared. The crab cakes are superb. There are specials in addition to the menu which offers meat and fish entrees all of which are excellent. You also have the option of bringing your own wine or ordering from their list. we like to bring guests from out of town."
