NOW OPEN FOR BRUNCH ON SUNDAYS

“Start early, finish late …” Welcome to Policy Restaurant and Lounge
Our idea for Policy, is to be the first and final stop of the evening.

One of DC’s hottest Restaurant and Lounge, located in the vibrant U Street neighborhood, this upscale diner motif like main floor, Love Dining Room and the airy second floor, the Liberty Lounge, this space extends the sentiment of being free and savvy. Decorated with brilliant chandeliers and art work by Andrew funk and Drew Nussbaum, Policy offers two levels of charm and class in a hip and inviting environment.

The restaurant provides an intimate feel not only for couples but for a group of people catching up. We’ve taken Global Flavors and infused them with American cuisine adding a unique spin.

Choosing a place for brunch with an out-of-town friend, I picked Policy for its menu, location and the prospect of outside dining. Unfortunately, they only use outside tables at night, which may explain why the place was empty on one of the busiest blocks of the city on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I wish I could say that the food and service made up for it, but my steak and potatoes took forever to arrive; the entire plate was cold, crispy and dry - way overcooked. Maybe the night scene is better, but I wouldn't choose it for brunch.

Our second visit to Policy. As before food was really good as was the service. The problem however is the noise level. it appears to me that the restaurant has too many hard surfaces - the noise echoes easily.

This was my first experience at POLICY. I was impressed with the staff, the atmosphere and even more so with the delicious food. My only problem was the level of noise made it very uncomfortable for us to engage in normal conversation. Talking was uncomfortable as we had to raise our voices to be heard. Please hire a sound consultant to address this issue.

We came as a group of 6 to have dinner before celebrating my husband and my bday. The 1 star I gave was for the sliders. I heard they were tasty. My hubby order the short ribs. Epic failer, he got 4 little pieces which were blan...no flavor what so ever. I order the pan seared chicken which came out burnt. The ends were hard as a rock. It took almost 20 min for ice and a coke. Several occasions we just walked up to the bar. My hubby finally went across the street to Matchbox to get a pizza.

I didn't have the highest expectations going in given the other great food options on 14th streeet. But we were very pleasantly surprised. The food was great, and the service was fast and friendly. The menu had some great items, and we liked almost everything we ordered (highly recommend the corn, the brussel sprouts and the kale salad). Portions were also bigger than expected and the prices were totally reasonable. I would definitely stop here again.

I met a friend here for happy hour although there was nothing really happy about it. The service was extremely slow which is ridiculous because it was a slow night and all the tables were vacant. The drinks were not that interesting and the food was just okay. Complete bummer because I came for restaurant week and had a completely different experience. Not sure if I want to chance it here again.

We went to Policy for two reasons: 1) check out the revamped DC Area 2) Try out this restaurant. What a wonderful place to eat, drink, and enjoy yourself. If you go early, you can enjoy a great meal outside or inside when it is quieter. We started the night off early with happy hour, then dinner and stayed until late. Definitely a hip spot. Highly recommend. We told many of our friends to go check this place out. They would not be disappointed. Everything from atmosphere to the staff were impeccable.

A friend and I were visiting DC and realized it was restaurant week as we sat down on the beautiful outdoor patio of Policy for dinner. We got one starter (the fries - yum), two dishes - the Greek nachos (YUM) and the brisket sliders (seriously - YUM), and added on a third plate so we could try the crispy pork belly (you guessed it - YUM). The brussel sprouts side dish was very good, as well. We had a great experience with the food, staff ("Hipster John" was our server) and ambience. I would love to go back there the next time I'm in DC.

The addition of outdoor seating made this perfect - often the interior is very VERY loud for dinner but still, we love the menu here. We recently dined at Policy with 3 couples and we had a lovely evening. The service was good. We sat inside as it was too hot to enjoy an outside table but they were available. We were able to sit at a window table. The Happy Hour specials were great with several food items to choose from and the wine and beer selections were good as well. There is a lot of variety on the menu and we had a great time sharing several plates between us all. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Policy was an overall great experience. We had a large group (11 people) and they were very accommodating with some last minute numbers and time changes (thank you!). It seemed that the dishes and drinks were a hit or a miss. If they were good - they were heavenly good. If they were a miss - it left us unsatisfied. The service was really good at times where our waitress would check up on us consistently, but one side of the table didn't get their first dish or drinks for about 45 minutes. The ambiance is very hip and the bar scene upstairs is bumpin. We didn't stay upstairs for long because of the very expensive drinks and freezing temperatures, but the music was great and people were dancing.

The food is only mediocre here. It's a nice spot. Server was friendly. But the food is expensive and at a price level of much nicer/better restaurants. The food was not worth the price. My girlfriend and I went for date night. The bill came to around $100 just for a few small plates and three drinks. We could have paid the same price and eaten much better tapas at Estadio, Barcelona or one of many other restaurants in the area.

I've been here a number of times previously but never booked through open table so I thought it appropriate to review. Reservation was honored right on time and the service was good. They have a great beer selection, so don't just look at the taps. Food was great and came out at appropriate intervals for tapas. Quinoa and Greens salad might be my favorite new item which is saying a lot for a salad. The meatball sliders are new too which were also excellent. Policy used to have a very dark atmosphere in their restaurant and they've done a few renovations to improve that, so that is much improved.

Really enjoyed the service my friends and I had on Saturday evening for a bachelorette. Our server was awesome and very accommodating!! I can’t call her name but she was great!! Our food was delicious. The only thing we were a little disappointed about was the Prosecco. It was just a tad dry. Not usually what I’m used to but if that was the worst of the evening, I think my group and I came out on top!! Thanks again. I’ll be back in the future.

Despite having a reservation we were seated at the worst table in the house which was dimly lit and right up against the server's station in a high traffic area. We asked for another table and were taken to the main dining area which was only 1/3 full. It would be wise to use this table only when the restaurant is packed and there is a line-up.

Food was excellent, but the atmosphere and service undid all of that. Atmosphere is way too loud - the restaurant is more like a bar. The noise is best describe as a din. We also had to wait numerous times for our waitress to notice us - including 25 minutes between plate clearing and final paying of the check. In addition, a dish was substituted without our prior consent because the kitchen ran out of certain ingredients (carrots!). After returning the dish, we agreed upon a substitute for the ingredient - yet they charged us for that substitute and the dish. For these reasons, I cannot recommend the Policy for an enjoyable evening.

We arrived before the rest of our party and were seated. As the rest of our party arrived the waiter never came back to check on us. After a while I eventually asked the hostess if we could have our check for the drinks we ordered because we wanted to leave. As I cam back to the table our waiter had finally came back but was taking the order of the table next to us which was seated way after we were. To sum it up, horrible service. Will never try this place again.

The idea of a restaurant on 14th Street NW without Valet parking is absurd. We drove around for 25 minutes until we finally found a space a half hour after our reservation time of 8:30. When we were seated no on came to say hello or take our drink order for 10 minutes. I finally got up and found a manager who apologized profusely. The food took a long time and was not bad but the only standout was the balsamic roasted Brussels Sprouts with cranberries. The noise level with three TV's tuned to three different sports channels was deafening. This place must have been designed by a frat boy. I will never set foot in Policy again.
