A word from Policy
NOW OPEN FOR BRUNCH ON SUNDAYS

“Start early, finish late …” Welcome to Policy Restaurant and Lounge
Our idea for Policy, is to be the first and final stop of the evening.

One of DC’s hottest Restaurant and Lounge, located in the vibrant U Street neighborhood, this upscale diner motif like main floor, Love Dining Room and the airy second floor, the Liberty Lounge, this space extends the sentiment of being free and savvy. Decorated with brilliant chandeliers and art work by Andrew funk and Drew Nussbaum, Policy offers two levels of charm and class in a hip and inviting environment.

The restaurant provides an intimate feel not only for couples but for a group of people catching up. We’ve taken Global Flavors and infused them with American cuisine adding a unique spin.

Diner Reviews
  • "The idea of a restaurant on 14th Street NW without Valet parking is absurd. We drove around for 25 minutes until we finally found a space a half hour after our reservation time of 8:30. When we were seated no on came to say hello or take our drink order for 10 minutes. I finally got up and found a manager who apologized profusely. The food took a long time and was not bad but the only standout was the balsamic roasted Brussels Sprouts with cranberries. The noise level with three TV's tuned to three different sports channels was deafening. This place must have been designed by a frat boy. I will never set foot in Policy again."

  • "We were really impressed with the food-- very creative seasonings and flavors, and decent prices. However, the noise level was quite uncomfortable. No need to blast loud bar music everywhere. Also, some tables were very dark. If Policy could improve the ambience so that diners could have a conversation, I'd wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant. Absent that, I really can't."

  • "Website stated that the restaurant severed dinner until 12am. Was able to book a reservation on opentable. Got to the restaurant and it was closed for the club upstairs. Bouncer told us they were closed at 11pm. Ruined the night. Would not recommend until they get their ish organized."

  • "I had to chase the waitress around the restaurant to get our bill! Sort of ruined the experience...."

  • "The small plate / family style setup usually scares us off as my girlfriend is gluten-free vegetarian (she eats fish though) and we always have a hard time agreeing on a restaurant let alone food to share. Policy has many options for both gluten free and vegetarian patrons. I was a little nervous walking in as the place was somewhat busy and I could only spot 1 server and the bartender. The service was the highlight of the night though, our server was very attentive and friendly throughout . The food was great and it's quantity was a little more than the traditional tapas setup. It was a great experience! The only thing that we found needed any attention was their dessert menu, 3 run-of-the-mill options that didn't really blow us away."

  • "The restaurant advertises on its website (and according to the servers) that they source their meat from local farms. However, according to the general manager, the farms they source from administer the animals with antibiotics, growth hormones, and are definitively NOT free range (same goes for the eggs), nor are they grass fed. Taken together, it sounds like the meat come from local factory farms, which is not what people expect when a restaurant advertises that it sources from local farms. Not fit for foodies."

  • "I went because I had the Gilt voucher, which I bought primarily because it's close to wear I live. I was expecting the food to be fine but not good. I was very pleasantly surprised. Everything we ate was of very, very high quality, and the waitress was one of the best waitresses I have ever had. I will be going back for sure."

  • "Great food! We had the potato gnocchi , skirt steak, green bean, and shrimp with polenta. All had amazing flavor and was just the right amount of food. Prices are good too and our server was great! Would definitely go again!"

  • "We had to wait 25 minutes even though we had a reservation. But when we told the server that (as a result) we were in a bit of a hurry, she was amazingly attentive even though they were so crowded. The food is always splendid. I wish they didn't put pork in so many dishes, but I can always find a few things to order & they were all excellent."

  • "Policy has potential, however it fall flat. We were there for brunch, and we would not recommend going back. One person in the party ordered pancakes. The menu says, "Buttermilk Waffles, Seasonal Fruit Topping, Hot Maple Syrup." When received the food, this person didn't receive any fruit. So, he asked the waitress, and she went back to the kitchen to find out where it was. When she came back she informed us that there isn't any fruit. Yet, we were still charged full price. Another person ordered a breakfast skillet. The skillet has egg on top of it. The egg was completely raw. It didn't even look partially cooked! There are much better places to go for lunch."

  • "It was our first time at Policy. Our server suggested that we share selections and that we pick two each. They were all excellent and the amount was spot on. I look forward to going back. we really enjoyed ourselves."

  • "We arrived for an early dinner before seeing a show at Studio, so restaurant was relatively quiet. We enjoyed great drinks and a leisurely meal of very creative dishes. Service was great and we got out in plenty of time to get to the theatre without being rushed."

  • "Our first visit to Policy won't be our last, but next time will be for half price wine on Wednesdays. The wine prices by bottle are too high for the wines they offer and the storage they use (warm reds). The food overall was quite good and the variety of options was excellent including many vegetable choices. Portion size is good, including happy hour servings which were more generous than expected based on the waiter's description. HH lasts until 8 and is an excellent option for pre-theater. We recommend the skirt steak, scallop trio, lentils, green beans and the quinoa salad, but not the slider due to inferior roll. Our waiter, John, was excellent - pleasant, attentive and knowledgable. Policy is a good choice in the U st. area."

  • "Went with my friends and fiance to dinner at Policy for her birthday. The food was excellent and the service was also excellent. The space is comfy and and the ambiance is fun. We walked upstairs after dinner for a nightcap which was convenient. I would definitely recommend for dinner and post dinner drinks with friends."

  • "Our server was very attentive until she got busy but we weren't in a hurry. The bar took too long with drinks but again, they got slammed. We enjoyed some happy hour items before using our coupon. I'm blanking on what we had but it was all tasty. Obviously a popular local spot and we'd come back when in that neighborhood."

  • "This was my second time dining at Policy and it went swimmingly well! They were able to accommodate my party of six -which even expanded to seven, unexpectedly. Our server, Morgan, was wonderful and very responsive to our questions as well as very knowledgeable about the food. The food was quite good and we were full before the second to last entree. Would recommend to anyone who desires a warm environment, good variety of food, and great drink selection."

  • "Very easy going, laid-back place. My girlfriend and I had an amazing, enjoyable dinner together. We shared the restaurant week menu, and it was great. I really enjoyed the food and the service. We are going back at some point."

  • "Our waiter was great, the food , a lot of it for the restaurant week menu. One slight issue- the person delivering food to the tables seem to be doing a free for all- and distributing food to any table that would have it- tuna tartare fabulous, salad excellent, brussels sprouts excellent, mussels delicious-sliders...not my favorite- had the lamb one- a little on the dry side- but over all a good takes with grogonzola and mint pesto. To top it off- Wednesday nights- bottles of wine are half price. :) I will be back for the tuna, mussels and wine."

  • "We had a group of about 7 and had a nice time until the music got louder and especially when the bar turned into a night club scene. Small plates of food and good. Try the pork belly (favorite), lentils, wings (perfect level of spicy — just right), broccoli and the buns ( I think pork, too). Some of us are gluten and dairy intolerant so there were nice ways to tell which foods "fit" dietary needs. It seemed like the mussels were not good given that the whole bowl just sat there nearly full. Drinks were good. Our server was awesome. I think we were there for four hours!"

  • "We went for brunch and they ran out of pancakes. How do you run out of pancakes? I had the short rib hash, it was good. I was worried it might be to salty but it wasn't."

  • "Nothing really special. Only was the first level bar. Pretty standard happy hour scene. No real complaints just nothing stands out"

  • "Haven't been to Policy in over a year since the food was only so-so. Well apparently there is a new chef and the food was excellent this time! Scallops, duck tacos, and Brussels Sprouts with bacon and Gorgonzola were the stand outs. Zeppole dessert was also divine. Our wait staff was excellent as well."

  • "This is my second time to Policy and it won't be my last. I enjoyed the ambience and the food each time I was there. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a great meal and then is interested in dancing afterwards upstairs in Policy's club atmosphere. The only drawback about the upstairs club is it gets pretty rowdy. If one is not up to being pushed around you will not have a great time."

  • "We went because of a Living Social deal, and am very happy we did. They explain that the plates are bigger than tapas but not quite dinner size. Everything was amazing , drinks were strong, and service was pretty good. We had the Filet mignon special which was sooo good, then the roast chicken and vegetables which was pretty good, and then the shrimp and polenta dish which is one of the best things I've eaten in awhile. I will definitely return, Great night out."

  • "My girlfriend & I went to celebrate the end of 2013. We had amazing drinks, We asked our server to tell the bartender to be creative and she Made us some very interesting & delicious cocktails. We ordered the mussels, Mac and cheese, green beans and meatball sliders. The mussels were so good but the real Winner was the green beans- we devoured them! Overall, we had a great Time."

  • "Wonderful find! The different plate sizes give the diner many choices to taste the chef's clever combinations. We were delighted with the quality of the food and fun cocktails. Service was a bit sporadic and one dish was completely forgotten, but the rest of the experience was worth the inconvenience."

  • "Good food. Pricy coffee. The food we ordered (eggs Benedict with crab, skillet, grits) was executed well and tasted delicious. The coffee was only offered via French press and this was quite expensive and thus did not include refills."
    Dined on 12/15/2013
  • "but execution of the food left lots to be desired. Likely will not go back. Server was great. Mixed drinks were the best. Wine was no so much."

  • "My wife and I seldom dine out, and when we do, we ensure we spent time enjoying and savoring the food and the ambiance. The food was really outstanding. We highly recomend the lamb sliders, and the duck leg. We also loved the briskett sliders - formed into a burger, but melts apart when placed in your mouth. The service was outstanding, and our waitress was filled with helpful suggestions about the variety of dishes on the mennu. This was our first time but it won't be our last!"

  • "My girlfriend and I went to Policy for the first time and the experience was wonderful. Our server, Beth, was so kind and friendly and she offered many recommendations on food and drink that were spot on. We loved the sweet potato gnocchi (so much that we ordered a second batch to bring home!), the curried lentils and the green papaya salad. We will definitely be coming back! Thanks Beth for the great service!"

  • "A nice little neighbourhood restaurant/bar, service was great, attentive, not spotty at all. What lets this place down is the food, un-imaginative presentation, mediocre flavours, nothing really stood out. There is a lot of choice in this area and I was disappointed compared to other venues I had dined in. In terms of portions I guess it's good value for money but there is better nearby."

  • "While searching in the area of DC Improv, I stumbled across Policy and am so glad I did. The front of the house staff was very patient, while I waited for bf to park and held our table. We were sat in a fairly cozy part of the restaurant away from the bar. My cocktail, the Kentucky Ninja, was tasty. Since the plates are designed to share we chose mussels, duck leg and scallops - all delicious!!! The only disappointment was the very anemic dessert menu - one of the choices was caramel dipped apples (it was right after Halloween) and I thought it was a little amateur. Our waiter was attentive, for the most part, until the restaurant became busier. Overall, a good time (due in part to my company ; ) but we'd definitely return."

  • "Out waitress was very nice, and helpful with menu recommendations. I went there to have dinner with a friend. My friend has a serious aversion to gluten, and the waitress made sure that his dinner was entirely gluten free. She even saw to it that his gluten free beer was opened with a clean bottle opener! The food was delicious, and I really enjoyed the Beekeeper. Would return and recommend to a friend."

  • "Live the idea of servings for two versus tapas. The short ribs and duck tacos are marvelous. Tangy sweet great mix of tastes. Brussels pretty good and great selection of drinks. Not much ambiance. If we had just been at the bar probably great. Very loud."
    Dined on 11/13/2013
  • "Their plates are slightly larger than small plates or tapas but not full entrees but they are good. This was my second time coming here and the first time I came, there were a lot of people in the place and it was very noisy but the food was really good. It wasn't loud enough where it was annoying and we had to yell to hear each other but it was definitely noticable. This second time that I came it was relatively empty and very intimate, the food was really good once again."

  • "We've been twice and both times the food was really enjoyable - the hummus, shortribs, garlic fries, scallops and then some vino to wash it down. Our server was pretty attentive and informative about the menu and the wines. It's not an intimate place as the bar on the main level is always busy (somewhat loud) but it doesn't come across as drinkers only b/c they're serving food there too. Went upstairs after dinner to check out the DJ and was a little disappointed with the music selection and the drinks from the bar up there and decided to scram. Overall, 2 thumbs up for the experience and would happily go again - just need to coordinate where to go to dance afterwards."
