The sound is low so you can hear your tablemates but the waiter could not hear me when I spoke. The acoustics are interesting. The atmosphere is lush and comfy. I've dined here several times over the past year, and I'm already looking for an excuse to go again. Their food is consistently sublime, and they update their menu according to the freshest local vegetables, fruits, etc. that are in season. It's difficult to recommend just a dish or two, as I've always been happy with the various entrees I've ordered, including pastas, beef, fish, salds and, of course, desserts. Debbie, our server, was very knowledgeable about the menu items, and we were able to choose from a large variety of vegetarian items for my son. She and the other servers helped make my son's graduation dinner beyond perfect. Our waiter was very pushy, and inattentive, which dampened the evening. We felt like we were putting him out to ask for anything, as he briskly threw the food on the table and scurried off. There weren't that many people in the restaurant to attend to, and yet he NEVER dropped by to check on us to see how were were doing.
Thank goodness the food and the atmosphere were so outstanding.....because we often go here, and always recommend it to friends as one of two top restaurants in Sausalito. They really need to train their waiters to be more polite, attentive and caring, as this is not the first time we have had a bad one.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMSausalito's best place for foodiesOK, so they did not have a chicken liver pasta last night (no one does it better than Poggio) so I had lobster rigatoni with lobster roe in the pasta. Outstanding! We had some other things that were just as good ... squid ink pasta with seafood, venison meatballs, Gem lettuce with anchovy/lemon dressing (what a salad should be!), a decadent version of chocolate mousse and the best take on lemon meringue I have ever had. Service was outstanding ... we had friends from Chicago we don't see enough of and our waitress paced the dinner perfectly ... never rushed, never waiting.

After being seated on time at a very nice table by a gracious host, we waited a long time before anyone acknowledged our presence, brought water, or asked about drinks. After waiter answered questions about the menu, he disappeared. A hostess -- or someone not on the wait staff -- happened by and asked if all was well. We told her we'd like to order and she took the order. Waiter rwas put out that we had ordered from the other person. Mid-way through the entree, waiter told my companion that she did not get the dish that she ordered and offered to change it for the correct one. She declined. I was early & had a glass of vino at the bar. The bartender was an older Italian gentleman with a nice personality. Upon my date's arrival we were immediately taken to our very small table. The waiter not very knowledgeable of the menu. Service was average yet friendly. We started with a nice sized Ketel One martini. We both had the Caesar salad & halibut. The salad was very average & the halibut was moist yet surprisingly lacking in portion size (I'd estimate 3oz). The dessert was excellent, creamy lemon flavored with roasted pistachio nuts. Overall, it was a nice little spot but did not live up to expectations. While the service was a little slow, we completely enjoyed the food. All of our choices were delicious and the bread was out of this world. We would return soon. At our last lunch, my husband and I found the food great and the service very good. The pickled anchovies, mixed green salad with peas and fava beans, and the chicken liver/strawberry appetizers were excellent.

Perhaps it seemed a little too 'touristy' and thus avoidable. So it was a great pleasure to become reacquainted last week with this wonderful local restaurant. The food was quite good, we enjoyed a wonderful (never tried before) italian-influenced chardonnay from Sebastopol, and the service was personal and most attentive. I arrived before my date and was directed to the bar area as a fine place to wait. The bar guy discreetly noted this and immediately came forth with two coasters and a drinks menu and even guided a new guest to a different chair to leave the two seats available for me and my date. THAT alone is great service! Perceptive staff!
When my date arrived we opted to go straight to our table. The table service was equally discreet and perfect. No breaking into the conversation to as "how is everything!". They just kept a watchful eye out and made sure it was all great. GREAT food as well. We enjoyed it with the fabulous bread and sweet butter. My friend's grilled halibut was perfectly done, and the kale was beatifully prepared. (I snitched a bite.). The dinners typically have some Italian flair, and were superb: lamb chops and risotto for me, spinach lasagna for my wife, both cooked to perfection. The restaurant is quite quiet, particularly for these days, and includes some outside seating across from the harbor for warm evenings, and the service is attentive and polite. Of the places we've eaten in Sausalito, Tiburon, and Mill Valley, Poggio's is way above the rest!
