We have eaten at Poesia twice when visiting this part of The City. Both times we found very tasty and high-quality food at an excellent value for the money. The dishes often have a unique twist to a standard dish. For example recently we enjoyed some mushroom and cheese stuffed raviolis. Standard fare, right? Except that the ravioli was colored with squid ink, and the subtle sauce complemented the unique ravioli. At another visit, I enjoyed a very generous service of Rack of Lamb, with an entree cost of less than $30! Service is not always prompt, but it is friendly. We'll be back again when we are near the Castro district.

Had a group of 10, which the restaurant was happy to seat us. Servers were attentive and helpful. VERY impressed that all 10 entrees arrived to the table at the same time and all hot! Great place that I definitely recommend for groups or a romantic 2-top.

Usually this restaurant is great. But this time one person in our party ordered chicken and got the special instead. The special was tasted and wasn't tasty. They said they would bring the chicken but everyone in our party had long finished their dinner before it came. Was just a little disappointing as I have always had a great experience there.

My fiance and I went here to celebrate the one year anniversary of our first date. We had an appointment in town, so we got to the restaurant one hour earlier than our reservation. The staff was very welcoming. Even though they were busy, they directed us to the bar. We had to wait a while for drinks and our table, but once seated, the service was excellent. The only downside, for me, was the noise level. Since it was a Friday night, Poesia was crowded and very noisy. I could barely here my fiance talk. Maybe not the best place if you want a quiet, romantic restaurant, but the food was good and we had a good time.

First heard about this restaurant from "check Please" show and since my family is from Calabria, Italy I was exited to try their food. I was not disappointed. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff so friendly. It truly was like stopping at the home of an Italian family and everyone welcomed you into their home. The owner even came over and talked to us. Of course, we were there early (6:00) on a Saturday night because we were on our way to another event so the restaurant was not full yet...but was packed by the time we left. It is small so it does get crowded and noisy but again, very friendly. Give it a try!

This restaurant succeeds in a tricky location in the Castro in that it's on the second floor on 18th St. Friday night was hopping busy (completely full). The quality of ingredients and preparation of the antipasti was excellent. We waited a bit long for the pasta - house made of course, but one pasta still a tad chewy (doughy) and somewhat over sauced. Wait staff was friendly but overtaxed that night I think. We'll go back and give it another try though since a lot of good elements are in place.

Poesia's is a nice, small but very busy Italian Restaurant. If you are going for a quiet dinner where you can hear yourself, then you may want to look elsewhere. It was quite noisy. The noisy made it difficult to even communicate with the wait-staff. The food was good but it was not very flavorful. I had the lamb dish and the tomato sauce was just tomato, no seasoning to spice it up. My partner had the whole fish and again, it was good but no spices to complement the fish and to highlight it.

Atmosphere is charming & wait staff very helpful, attentive without hovering. Upstairs location lets you get away from the sometimes frenetic street bustle, but in front dining area you can still people-watch. Cellist on the balcony a wonderful touch of just-right music. Special entree, risotto w/prawns, was balanced & delicious. Tartuffo dessert incredible; Cafe Americain v. rich accompanyment. (As default choice it was memorable; can't wait to see what they do with something more elaborate.) Hard to select from creative list of cocktails so will have to go back to try more of them.

Everytime I dine at Poesia it's such a treat. Located on the second floor of an old Victoria house in the Castro, coming here is like entering a Italian relatives home. Cozy yet romantic, it's ideal for both dates and groups. Good Italian food. But improvement is needed. The grilled squid salad was excellent, as was the special fig spinach salad. Special squid ink risotto was good but a touch too salty, seafood ravioli was good, but not much filling in the ravioli. Desserts were good. This restaurant has the feeling of a place which is resting on its past success

The food was very well prepared. I had a fresh pasta with Ragu which was very well made and the stuffed zucchini flowers were excellent. My husband had muscles in a tomato sauce which was very fresh and he cleaned the plate with the the delicious bread. His plate of fregola with sea food was well prepared but missed salt and so did the fish my daughter had. But, the fish could not be fresher.....but it could had come with more than 3 potato chips. The desserts menu need a bit of improvement although the Tiramissu was delicious. The owner is wonderful, going around the tables and talking to the clients making you feel special.

This was my third time dining at Poesia, and there will be many more. The food is always delicious and beautifully presented. My one quibble is the desserts. I shared one once, and had my own on my most recent visit. For me, they were a little heavy, coming after a pasta dinner. Plus I'm just not that big a chocolate fan, so my choices were limited. The staff is about the best you will find. They are knowledgeable about the food and wine, attentive without hovering, and most of all incredibly gracious, friendly, and sweet. The restaurant itself is fairly small. I personally love the old Italian movies projected onto the wall (without sound) and the slightly funky look. It feels very homey and comfortable. I recommend it highly.

Totally under-whelming. We went for a birthday, group of 4. No one loved their dish. We had, collectively, the sea bass, pork ragu, gnocchi and eggplant parm. For apps we had the burrata and beets. Nothing stood out as great. All were fine. Had the meal been $100 for 4, I"d think it was great. At $220, it was not as great. I won't return.

We were entertaining guests from Atlanta, who unfortunately were detained in traffic from a day in San Jose. We notified the restaurant of the delay and arrived an hour later when guests made it to the City. The host was extremely accommodating and after a short 10 minute wait seated us at the first available table. A touch of class coupled with a great meal made the evening for our friends. Calamari starter is a must - not the typical miso frito style but a Greek inspired marinated, grilled rendition, not to be missed! All pasta entrees were varied, well presented and kudos by all after sharing the entrees....desserts (yes, we MADE room for Canoli, house made tiramisu and out of this world gelato.
