Diner Reviews
  • "We had an excellent experience here. Food was great, service was impeccable. Even when they got busy the level of service stayed the same. They do need to put salt and pepper on the table though!"

  • " The service was attentive without being needy. Delicious tomato soup and local bread. Both the sagu and ragu were tasty, although the pasta was slightly overdone in my opimion. We were a party of two and had a nice time for a reasonable price."

  • "Overall mediocre experience. Food not hot or ineteresingly spiced. Italian food, well prepared, is the best in the world, in my opinion, Poesia was a disappointment"

  • "I'd been hearing about Poesia from a few different friends who told me I ought to check out the food here. Well it was worth the wait, since the food was truly excellent, but there are a few other reasons to go back as well. The owner met us at the door, and had clearly read our OpenTable reservation request, and asked if we'd want to have a seat at the bar, so he could seat us at a nice table by the window. Perfect, gracious, accommodating. The entire staff, from owner/host, to bartender, to waitress and other service folks - everyone was so kind and helpful and perfectly friendly. What a "find" Poesia is…and somehow I had a hunch that it would be just that. We'll be back!"

  • "I went to this restaurant with a friend for dinner before a show around the corner. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable. The food selections were great. I had done research on yelp prior to making my selection for the restaurant, and, as always, yelp delivered. The drinks, soup, main courses, and desserts were all spot on. Good portions, good prices. The dining was a little louder than I had expected, but nothing that deterred from the experience. We got a seat in the corner by the window up front, so it was nice to see the foot and vehicle traffic below. Great place to catch a delicious meal!"

  • "I almost do not want to review this restaurant because then it will become known how ultimately nice this place is! The location, the vibe, the service was awesome!! The food was spectacular and the dessert was the best."

  • "Although crowded, it worked well. The food was delicious, uniquely presented, a cut above an "In" dining experience."

  • "Exceptional food paired with exceptional service and a stellar wine list AND a full bar. Sadly, the Castro has never been known as a dining destination and there are many examples of completely mediocre food. Poesia is definitely an exception. I look forward to going back!"

  • "I live in the neighborhood, and have never been. We went in the other night and boy, have we been missing out! What a great neighborhood gem--we'll definitely be back. The service was amazing, and it's very clear that the owner truly cares about his visitors' experience. The food was awesome as well. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "We asked our Italian friends to join us since we knew they would be better judges of authentic cuisine. Sure enough, the calamari was outstanding on all accounts. Fresh, beautifully presented, not battered and fried! The sardines were traditionally prepared (who knew) and the pasta dishes were fresh and excellent. We shared our pasta entrees so we could all sample them. Then we had to try the desserts - the poached pear was delicious and the tiramisu was very light and tasty. We chose an Italian wine to pair with our pasta and were not disappointed. As other reviewers have commented - it is like having dinner in someone's home. The owner was very attentive and the staff members were friendly and helpful."

  • "Special event at Castro. My wife and I w/ another East bay couple. the service and genuine welcoming from owner to wait staff, the unique, fresh ingredients of the servings, and a charming Victorian 2nd level restaurant that put you above the street noise, esp. a celebrating night in the Castro. Though I was somewhat on restricted diet, and could only order two appetizers, and had to cancel one, the owner was so gracious and accommodating in his response. Would I recommend or return, Absolutely!!! Please for my comments to the owner."

  • "This place has a lot of charm. It has been great for both going out for dinner with my family and for dates. I find the staff very approachable and friendly - it has the feel of a family restaurant. Also the drinks are amazing."

  • "I thought the restaurant was very nice and the Staff were extremely nice and helpful. My only critique would be that there was not enough pasta dishes on the menu. Other than that, We had a great experience."

  • "My friend & I get greeted automatically by the owner as we walk in. Our table was not ready yet, so we got escorted to the bar where we had an amazing pre-dinner drink. Our table was ready quickly & service was great & knowledgable. Food was delicious. Wine selection is fantastic & the owner come to check up your experience. I want to go back."

  • "The service from the bar to table was excellent. The food was delicious! We enjoyed a long meal without ever feeling rushed. It was very noisy so it made conversation difficult at times but I still enjoyed it and would return."

  • "I enjoy Poesia every time I go there. While the food wasn't amazing this time, it was good and the service is always great - attention but not too much - perfect balance. My favorite still is the beet salad, mmmmm!"

  • "We have taken friends (and just ourselves) here many times and are never disappointed! The menu choices change frequently which is good (impossible to get bored) and bad (sometimes a dish memorialized on the palate isn't available). We really enjoy Poesia! It is a a wonderful addition to our neighborhood!"

  • "I've been to Poesia 4 or 5 times over the last several years and get memorably good service every visit, from the host to the bartender to the server and manager. It's pretty impressive. The wines are delicious and the food is yummy and good quality. I look fwd to my next experience there."

  • "My husband & I went here for Valentine's Day after searching for a restaurant on Open Table. The overall experience was superlative! For appetizers, we got the last Zucchini Al Forno and a Caesar salad. Zucchini was very creative and delicious. My husband had the ravioli stuffed with diced filet mignon and fresh mozzarella. Portobello mushrooms, garlic, white wine and Italian parsley sauce which was to die for! I had the grilled filet mignon served sliced over arugola and farro salad lightly dressed with lemon and olive oil. The beef was exquisite, flavorful and tender. For dessert, we shared the Spuma di Cioccolato, a rich chocolate mousse. Waitress was great, friendly and attentive. Overall, one of our top 5 dining experiences."

  • "My lady and I travelled from SoCal to spend Valentine's Day in SF. Known for scads of fantastic restaurants, choosing the perfect V-Day dining experience was a challenge, but Poesia far exceeded my expectations. We had an early reservation, so I was skeptical about the level of service, table, and overall dining experience we would possibly endure....Much to my surprise, we were seated immediately at a beautiful table overlooking The Castro as the sun was about to set. Gorgeous!! Our waitress, Marty, was fun right off the bat. She readily snapped our photo, and reccomended her favorite eats, cocktails, and bottle of wine. None of which disappointed! Dinner followed by aperitifs and an amazing tiramisu. Poesia truly made our SF trip!"

  • "My second time to Poesia. I would avoid holidays at this restaurant because it is crowded and very noisy. Food was good but not fabulous. Service was reasonable given the crowding. But so noisy (few textiles to absorb noise) I couldn't hear my partner nor could she hear me."

  • "Everytime I come back to Poesia, the food is unbelievable, the value, the ambience, the staff, just everything is magnificent!"

  • "Food was a little disappointing. I didn't really enjoy either of my courses - had the calamari to start, felt there could have been more salad to go with it or bread or something to accompany, as otherwise, it's just a plate of somewhat bland calamari. I got the ravioli for mains and found the pasta too al-dente, with the filling quite disappointing in terms of flavour, compared to what was described on the menu (steak and mozzarella). The service was friendly and professional, although it took quite some time between courses. I didn't mind this so much, as I was there with a big group of friends and we had plenty to catch up on, so I was pleased not to be rushed. Like the ambiance with the Italian movies showing on the wall."

  • "Poesia is my new favorite restaurant, and I love it that it's just two blocks from my home. The staff is very friendly and sociable, and they make the place feel like a trip to Italy. The food is wonderful - my favorite is the branzino - and I will definitely be going back often."

  • "This is a great find in the noisy Castro-- a lovely upstairs Itakian oasis, excellent food, reasonably priced, and silent old movies playing on the wall! Loved it.. Great friendly service and quiet enough to really talk."

  • "My wife and I had an incredible time in Mendicino celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary at the Brewery Gulch Inn and the owner (Guy Pacurar) highly recommended the restaurant as one of his personal favorites when he is in the city. We were not disappointed. From the handcrafted cocktails to the incredible food and outstanding service we had an experience that we will always remember. I look forward to spending our 25th wedding anniversary with them."

  • "Had an early reservation (5:45PM), and got a great seat in front of the window. The beet salad with citrus dressing was very good - thinly sliced with goat cheese. My two companions had pasta dishes - the lamb ragout and the baked orrechiette (sp?) with eggplant. The pasta was incredibly fresh and cooked perfectly. Sauces were a little tart but flavorful. Only reason it was not 5 stars was my halibut special was disappointing. Once you removed the skin, there was 2-3 oz of fish left, and the potatoes gratin were about 70% onion and 30% potato. Service attentive, prices slightly high but not excessive for the quality/quantity. Would dine here again."

  • "The pasta here is cooked more expertly than anywhere else I have eaten in the city. The service is attentive but not obsequious. No better spot in the Castro for a relaxed and wonderful meal."

  • "Took my cousin for her birthday because she wanted good Italian food. He lives in a small village on the Oregon coast and misses SF food terribly. She loved everything about her experience...food, service & location. This was the first time I didn't have the whole fish...I saw the squid ink pasta with crab & white wine, which I had to have. It was delicious! Poesia is consistently a wonderful experience."

  • "We arrived five minutes early from our reservations and waited 40 minutes for our table. for twenty of those 40 minutes, another table set for four, sat empty waiting for someone who was late or had a reservations later than we did. Poor judgement on the part of the manager to make one customer wait instead of splitting the time. I will not recommend this restaurant and I will not be returning. We were disapointed about the treatment Jesus Diaz"

  • "Maybe our standards are too high, but despite other reviewers' opinions, we were disapponted in the food. The grilled squid was interesting and the kale salad quite nice. But the special ravioli was surrounded by tough pasta and the sauce for the lamb ragu was not cooked enough. The burchino wine was quite good. The ambience is pleasant, and the staff very friendly. The owner came by and spoke Italian with us; nevertheless, I don't think we will go back."
