A word from Pod
Philadelphia restaurant impresario Stephen Starr's retro-modern offering, located in the town's "University City" neighborhood, lets its guests sip sake, beer, and colored cocktails while munching on fresh sushi, dim sum, and Pan-Asian entrees. The hip, contemporary, "starship-like" space was conceptualized by famed Manhattan designer David Rockwell and influenced by the films "Sleeper" and "2001: A Space Odyssey."Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "After reading all the reviews, I was shocked at the level of poor service. Took about 10 minutes just to fill our water glasses. Then he brought our cocktails out after the appetizers. After that, we didn't see much of our server again. The food was good, but the poor service ruined the experience for me."

  • "My girlfriend and I attended the university dining days event yesterday night for dinner. The food was exceptional for a great price. You got four plates for $35. We got the california and spicy tuna for appetizers, miso soup and potstickers for dimsum, udon and chicken for entree, and the cake and springrolls for dessert. The only complaint was the service. Although it was a busy time, it felt like the server had more than she could handle. Our water glass was not refilled twice and the table took forever to be cleared. It felt as if our female server rarely checked in on us because we saw all the other servers more than we saw ours. Overall the experience was good."

  • "Good food, nice ambiance. They made a slight error but were very happy to fix it."

  • "I had a great time here- my boyfriend took me out for a birthday dinner at Pod. The food was phenomenal and the cocktails are a bit pricey but for a special occasion we didn't mind. The only thing I didn't like was that some snobby family had a kids birthday party there and the kids were running around the restaurant. Not Pod's fault of course but spending over $100 on a nice dinner shouldn't involve dealing with brats running all over your table. Next time I go I will definitely ask for a window table or one that is out of the way for a quieter ambience. Also, I mentioned online that it was a birthday dinner and they put a sparkler in my dessert which completely surprised me! Made the dinner extra special! We will be back soon!"

  • "We had high hopes for Pod - unfortunately it was a disappointment on all the senses. We immediately sensed a fishy smell. Were it not for a Steven Star restaurant, we would have left. The decor was interesting at first, but as your eyes focused on details, it seemed plasticky & cheap - not modern & chic! The plastic red cubes near the bar reminded me of romper room. The small TV screen behind the super long sushi bar wall was playing an Asian cartoon reminiscent of yu-gi-oh...really!?!? Pod seemed to be a sad, kindergarten copy of Morimoto's sushi restaurant in the Boca Resort (which IS so modern & chic!). The service was slow despite a light lunch crowd. The food?..please hold the aioli! Every sauce & side seemed to feature aioli!"

  • "Took some young friends for a birthday celebration! Pod did the trick...with the private pod and fun light panel to play with, plus the delicious foods to sample made it a memorable evening! Thank you Pod! We'll be back!"

  • "Been to Pod many times. Never had anything but a great dish. My very favorite for lunch is the teriyaki kobe beef burger. The burger is fabulous and comes with delicious tempura vegetables. Service always prompt and courteous. Located by the Inn at Penn."

  • "A few of my friends and I were getting together to celebrate the arrival of their new baby and we had a pod in the back of the restaurant which was awesome :) Great experience :)"

  • "The service was awesome and the food was superb. We were treated as celebrities. The food was fresh and the plate presentation was beautiful."

  • "My husband & I decided to come here for dinner while visiting Philly, and we had a FANTASTIC time. The duck leg appetizer was delicious, as was the miso soup, and filet mignon. I truly enjoyed the Australian Sauvignon Blanc, very aromatic & perfectly chilled. The food portions are quite generous so come hungry. Everything was very well prepared, professionally set up, and the hostess, waiter, and servers were exceptional! Thank you!"

  • "The decor & ambiance is still fun, colorful and happening. The cooking, however, is not. The spices are old, tired and often lacking. Calamari salad appetizer was fresh but the calamari was unseasoned. Sushi was rated good by the out-of-towners and they eat it all. Bok Choi seasoning and sauce was weak as was the chix lettuce curls. Drinks were very good."

  • "I went to pod with my nephew and we really enjoyed the ambience and the food. It was his first time there, but I have been there many times for special occasions such as my son's birthday, etc. He is a vegetarian so we ordered all vegetarian and everything was wonderful. Very good food and a lot of fun because the restaurant is so different in design."

  • "Brought my mother here for an early dinner on a Friday before a show. I had dined once previously and the food and service had been good. Was not disappointed a second time. Place was relatively empty at 6:00 pm so we were seated right away. We ordered both sushi and hot plates which all come out one at a time as they are ready. Sushi seemed fresh and the rest of the food was prepared well. Would definitely go back."

  • "Went here for lunch after my d graduation. Love their lettuce wraps btw. We all had a great meal. Our server was very attentive, and went out of her way. Pod helped make my d graduation day extra special."

  • "We had a wonderful time dining at the Pod on June14th. It was the evening of my son's graduation from Drexel so our energy level was high. The atmosphere of this restaurant matched our mood prefectly. And it was only a short walk to the place from the graduation ceremony. The sushi and main course meals were fabulous. The waiter brought the grad a special ice cream dessert with a sparkler in the center! Nice touch! It topped off our perfect evening!!"

  • "Assuming that I had gotten a pod as requested, the only complaint was that we couldn't hear ourselves think, and a pod would have corrected that."

  • "I read a few iffy reviews before I went the last time and I'd say I've had nothing but great meals at Pod. The most recent time was no different. I consider myself a foodie, I love to cook, love fresh food, love a fun atmosphere and a creative menu. Pod gets high marks all the way around. Last time I went with work colleagues from out of town and was a little nervous since I wasn't sure if sharing dishes would work for everyone. It was a big hit! I'll never doubt choosing Pod again."

  • "Had a great time at Pod. Service was excellent. Didn't want for anything. Our food came quickly and it was delicious. We had pork belly and steamed buns, udon and shiitake mushrooms, shiitake mushroom dumplings, tempura shrimp roll, and tempura rock shrimp. The drinks were tasty, but not strong enough for my liking. At $11/drink I'm going to need to at least taste the alcohol. Dessert was extremely disappointing. Neither my friend nor I eat chocolate, and it seemed like unless you were chocolate eater you were going to be restricted to sorbet or ice cream. We settled on a fruit plate served on a hot skillet in passion fruit sauce with a scoop of mango sorbet. It was okay, but not really what I was in the mood for when I think of dessert. "

  • "Popped in for a business lunch mid-week. Had been to Pod many times before for dinner / drinks. This was our first visit for lunch. Great news - still the same great food / presentation and service. The Bento is an amazing deal - and we had some off the chain sushi rolls too. Dined in an unhurried fashion with professional service. A real treat for a mid-week business lunch."

  • "We had a mini baby shower for a co-worker in one of the pods and it was great. Everyone enjoyed their food. The mizo glazed Chilean bass was excellent and so was my dessert, the chocolate cake."

  • "When I walked in I felt hostility from the girls standing to greet us. One was friendly and the rest just analyzed my outfit. When I smiled they just gave me a blank stare. Went here for my one year anniversary and my boyfriend and I didn't like the environment or food. The portions are small for the price and don't fill you up. He had a chocolate cake that was hard as a hockey puck and was difficult to eat. My dessert was a weird mix of fruits and marshmallows, which didn't go well together. They're not good with fusing together different tastes. I ordered the chicken and seafood spring roll too and the meats didn't complement each others taste, and neither did the mustard and apricot sauce they provided. It was just weird. "

  • "Service = A+. Server was knowledgeable, sweet, and attentive. Food = A+. Those who ate sushi were in paradise (it was fresh, and the spider roll was the best spider roll ever) and those who ordered the fried chicken and ribs were delighted as well. Ambience = A+. Clean, great mixed crowd, just a great experience all together."

  • "I planned this outing as a celebration for the completion of a project at work. POD easily accomodated our group of 11 people, and i highly recommend getting an array of sushi/dimsum and just sharing a few of the main plates. We all had plenty of food, were able to enjoy ourselves, and all around it was a great time!"

    Dined on 5/19/2014
  • "Went to Pod in Sunday night after UPenn graduation it is adjacent to our hotel so it was close and reccomended. The good: nice martini list good bar scene and seats are Comfortable at the bar. Dinner comes out as it is ready which makes for disjointed atmosphere but they told us un advance so it was okay. The main dishes (Shushi) was very fresh the Miso soup is flavorful but oversalted. The dumplings (pork) were succulent and the shell was thin and not chewy. The Chicken Lettuce wrap was very good lettuce really fresh beer selection is not huge has regular suspects and some local micro brews. It is a loud raucus party. Kitchen and staff were pushed by crowd at 9 pm but all and all it is a definate stop in the future!"

  • "We were there for our daughter's birthday. We were seated in the back room. There was a group seated near us. The music was quite loud and they were literally screaming over each other's voice. It was not enjoyable at all!! We could not wait to leave. The food and the service were good. "

  • "We had never been to Pod before, but have many friends who had been there. It really exceeded all of our expectations! The food was fabulous, and our server was very well informed about the menu. She was very helpful without being intrusive. We shared 2 appetizers- the fried rice "favorite" and the chicken pot stickers. Amazing. Pad Thai was phenomenal, too. "

  • "Actually, very similar quality eats for dinner. Though at $16.50 the sea bass lunch deal (including miso soup and salad) is more than we'd typically want to pay (or eat) for lunch, it makes a nice treat, and is consistently delicious. Availability of brown rice is especially welcome. "

  • "Pod is a consistently great place to dine- they use such fresh ingredients and each dish I've had was wonderful, flavorful and just the right portions! Pod is also a fun place to share plates. It's one of my favorite places around Penn's campus. Never disappointed"

  • "Second time dining at POD with my College daughter. We love the Pork Belly and Chicken Lettuce Wraps Dim Sum. Waitstaff were excellent, very knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. We'll be back again - she's only in her second year of 6 years!"

  • "I had high expectations, having been to other Starr restaurants including Morimoto. Pod was truly only "meh". The food was unremarkable, the prices were still fairly high (although not nearly as high as Morimoto), and I really felt that the food was sub-par for the price-point. I don't mind paying, as long as I am receiving what I paid for - I want to walk away feeling like it was "worth it". I can't say that about Pod. Philadelphia has so many quality restaurants, there was literally nothing that would make me inclined to return. The atmosphere was fun, unique and interesting - but as the disappointing food rolled out, even the décor began to feel "cheap". "
