A word from Plum
Plum is a neighborhood restaurant, located in Oakland’s Uptown district. The food, Chef Kim Alter's interpretation of California cuisine, uses the best wild and cultivated ingredients we can find in our area. The beverage list features delicious and interesting wines, beers, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. The restaurant is dramatic and inviting, with reclaimed wood tables and chairs, original artwork and a large chandelier with hand-blown glass shades. If you prefer being seated at our Chef's counter over a traditional table, please let us know when making a reservation.

Plum Bar, a neighborhood bar and restaurant, is also right next door. We serve inventive and classic cocktails, and fun, tasty bar food. Happy hour is 4:00 to 6:00 pm M-F. We open at 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Diner Reviews
  • "We had not dined at Plum since Kim Alter took over the kitchen. Everything we had was delicious--from cocktails, to main courses to dessert. We'll definitely go back!"

  • "We will be back! My only wish is that is warmer inside next time and those seats somehow get more comfy! "

  • "Chef Kim Alter really knows what she is doing when it comes to bringing out the flavors in each of her ingredients. Everything had the element of surprise and comfort at the same time. I have been to some of the best restaurants in the USA and France and would say that Kim's skills are right up there with the best of them. The service was good. I didn't give it a higher score because it was not one of those places where when you look up, someone is there to ask if everything is okay. The service was typical for a hip restaurant. Everyone was very pleasant and very helpful. The room is a bit noisy. The open kitchen is always fun. The decor is modern with solid wood benches and chairs. Trendy rules over comfort."

  • "Excellent service and wonderful dinner. I strongly recommend Plum"

  • "Top shelf food served professionally and creatively, but most of all, it's delicious!!!"

  • "We have eaten here several times, the last time on Valentines Day. The chef is excellent. She innovates with ingredients that complement tastes that make for a delicious result. I still remember the lomo slices mixed into the salad - delicious. Service was outstanding. It is a friendly restaurant in downtown Oakland, and one I recommend."

  • "Great location especially if you are going to the theater. While the selection was limited, it was varied and fresh. The pork belly salad with grilled romaine was very good and will have it again if its still on the menu. Our server seemed nervous but was attentive and pleasant. the Lamb was done 3 ways and very good. the chicken was cooked to perfection and was brined before cooking. We look forward to returning"

  • "You can't go wrong with the great dishes served at the gem of a restaurant. Many visits, many wonderful dishes!!! Go!!"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed the food, and the service was prompt and friendly. However, the recorded music was very loud. One customer asked that it be turned down. . It was for awhile, and then turned back up. We would try other restaurants in the same area before going back to Plum."

  • "We had the tasting menu, which is on the expensive side ($75) relative to the entrees ($20-$30). It was fantastic! The meal started with a mushroom amuse bouche, which I loved and my wife enjoyed even though she does not like mushrooms. The next course was an asparagus soup; it was brightened by lemon puree? that gave it a real pop. This was followed by grilled squid, which was good. The next course was squab (sous vide breast and confit leg). I had high expectations for this dish, and it delivered. The tiny leg was extremely flavorful, and the breast was very tender with good squab flavor. The meat course was spectacular braised? short rib with cauliflower, broccoli, and kale. The tasting menu was totally worth the price!"

  • "Their small menu constantly changes. Which is good if you want variety, but could be disappointing if you find a dish you are obsessed with. The food always tastes fresh and delicious! They have really great soups!"

  • "Worst dining experience in 20 years! Terrible, inexperienced serve staff!! Should have known when wife asked for a glass of cab and she was told "none was open!" My inquiry as to what single malt scotch was available was met with total befuddlement! After 3 suggested tastings of reds resulted in an acceptable one by the wife, when we asked for a bottle, we were told that the open bottle was "the last one", but would she save the last pour from it for us. Later, when we asked for it, that pour was about 2/3 the first one...no mas!!!"

  • "Staff was friendly and perfectly attentive. Food was delicious."

  • "The appetizers, braised oxtail and the asparagus salad, were very good. However, we were not as lucky with the entrees: the lamb was chewy and the brown rice congee oversalted. At the end of the dinner, we mentioned that the rice was oversalted just to give a feedback, however he was not particularly concerned and probably assumed that our palate was not sophisticated enough to appreciate the dish."

  • "Two appetizers and two mains, each unique and delicious. Midway through the meal, my dining partner said, "Plum is back!""

  • "I travel a lot and enjoyed the crab salad and braised rib dishes. I finished with the coconut tapioca, which was decadent. Service was fast and cheerful. I would dine again!"

  • "Wanted to experience, but prices vs taste means I won't be back. Lamb leg underdone"

  • "The food is with out exageration awesome. Kim Alter works miracles with food. Her dishes are in a class rarely seen except in very high end restaurants. Oakland is very fortunate to have her. If you haven't been don't wait."

  • "Beautiful, original, delicious food. Extraordinary service. Flexible and creative chefs. An utter delight! (Mostly meaty, but extremely accommodating to vegans.)"
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "The food is always delicious and smartly constructed, but the music doesn't match the creativity of the dishes. The Bar had a simple r&b vibe which melded well with the atmosphere and made the space more relaxing a comfortable. The restaurant had a odd mix of 90s and some rock, which was confusing."

  • "I wanted this to be in the "private note" section but it's too long---thanks, opentable! I made a reservation on Jan 14 for Feb 14; at the time I made the reservation, there was no indication that on Feb 14 there would be only a pre-fixe menu and not an a la carte one---much less that the price of the pre-fixe would be $95/diner before drinks, which would be hard to hit from the regular menu. It would have been nice to to have been informed of this."

  • "This was a second visit to Plum and it was even better than the first. Unique, interesting and delicious food beautifully presented by a delightful wait staff who really seemed to be enjoying their work. It is my absolute favorite restaurant in the Bay Area."
    Dined on 2/13/2014
  • "Service- If it wasn't for incidentals, service would have been outstanding. The check was brought out and processed very quickly, in less than 2 minutes while I was in the restroom, which I felt was a major faux pas. I had to request a marrow fork. Otherwise, everyone was friendly and courteous. The food was very good and interesting. I had the beet salad, braised beef, and shared the millefeuille with 1 other. The portions were right for me, though I heard a neighbor table complain they were too small. I'll come back for the quality of the food. A more extensive bourbon list would have been appreciated. The seating could be more comfortable and spacious, but typical."

  • "It did not blow my mind to sit by the chefs. The food was ok with a nice ambiance. Would not recommend the chicken. Very nice staff. Although at times they were a little too intrusive."

  • "We had planned this dinner for a couple of months now and it didn't disappoint. We did the tasting menu and were delighted when given two extra tastings. Every single item that came out was amazing. The flavors were bright and delicious! By the end of the 2nd sweet course we were stuffed! Never had that great of food for tasting menus that left us full. She is an amazing chef and everything about the restaurant was great. The drink service was slow but that would be my only complaint."

  • "We were at Plum before a concert at the Fox. Our cocktails took a very long time to arrive. The waitress was apologetic after a lengthy time period had passed and it was finally ackowledged that we didn't have our drinks. The salad/appetizer course was very good and arrived together. Entree selection was ok. The entrees themselves were ok. Probably will not return. Service and food need to be improved."

  • "Amazing symphony of flavors and outstanding service. Unexpected combinations of ingredients made for an enlightening meal. I got an education in cooking that will influence what I do in my kitchen."

  • "So excited to go back for the original chef. Plum has gone downhill so we were excited to have some of the original good food. not to be had. Service was still bad -- uninformed waitress -- rushed us. didn't even try to give us the cocktails before the first course. and the first wine pairing, skipped a course, didn't notice we weren't happy with much of anything. food was an expensive dud. The menu was not appealing at all, but we had hopes that stuff we wouldn't have ordered on our own would dazzle us on a tasting menu. no. chicory salad was bitter. yuck. the dessert was a joke- smoked ice cream, metamucil wafer. yuck. some courses were ok, none great. won't be returning. gangsa rap music blaring, even our 20 something complained."

  • "We were all delighted by each and every dish we ordered. Delicious and new flavors and textures. The plates were well executed and presented. And the cocktails were all amazing, especially the barrel-aged cocktails and the gin and house-made tonic."

  • "We really enjoyed the food at Plum. The portions are not generous, but every ingredient on the plate was flavorful and satisfying. The service was very good and the staff was very nice and accommodating to our 10 yr old son also."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner NYE. Having a Great Gatsby theme and Chef Kim there made it a must try, and we were rewarded. The Consommé was amazing, the risotto wonderful and lamb perfect. We thought the toast was a great surprise offering. The memorable ‘wow’ dishes were the Waldorf Salad and Baked Alaska. Both were interpretations / deconstructed. My bride and I loved both of these courses so much. Chef Kim is so attentive to detail and prepares amazing meals. We now always trust her selections, even if we might be wary and she always delivers. Happy New Year and Best Wishes for 2014!"

  • "We had the prix fixe menu for New Years Eve. Excellent food, from start to finish. The consumme was absolutely divine, as was the lamb, done two ways. While the waitstaff was very friendly and accommodating, the service was not up to par with the food. One expects a higher level of attention to detail for this level of cuisine. (For example, they neglected to bring a fork when they brought one of the courses so the dish was cold by the time the fork arrived, and didn't promptly refill water glasses throughout the meal.) Otherwise, it was superlative."

  • "Kim Alter is now cooking at Plum. Put this on your to-do list. Everything is exemplary. I'd like to see the cocktail list expanded a little bit but that is the only bit of criticism I can put forth. Eat at the kitchen counter, you'll feel well taken care of."
