A word from Plum Island Grille
Frequently featured in the media -Boston Globe, WCVB TV’s Chronicle, Billy Costa’s TV Diner, North Shore, Portsmouth & Accent Magazines - and awarded YANKEE Magazine's prestigious Editors’ Choice honor, the Plum Island Grille’s eclectic bistro style menu exemplifies New American Cuisine at its finest.

Minutes from downtown Newburyport and overlooking a two mile vista of salt marshlands, the Sunset Bar offers guests sensational sunset views and-while there are plenty of meat dishes on the menu-Plum Island Grille’s sumptuous cuisine is often inspired by the sea and reflects co-owner Chef Francis’ passion for uncomplicated, fresh, local ingredients.

Housed in what was originally a beach cottage at the gateway to Plum Island-a tiny barrier island off the northern coast of MA-the restaurant is charmingly rustic and has a laid-back island feel where guests can enjoy fine bistro dining and service at this year-round seaside hideaway, only 45 minutes north of Boston.

  • "6 PEOPLE ALL SATISFIED WITH VARIED MENU AND SERVICE"
    Dined on 7/26/2014
  • "My wife and I sat outside for a couple of minutes wondering what we were doing. If you park your car with your back to the marsh, the one story shack with picture windows and a bar is where you'll be eating. Don't hesitate. Go in. Sit at the bar. The food is nothing short of remarkable. The menu is varied and, for a place this small, extensive. I'm not talking about a really good hamburger. I'm talking about a lunch menu with a salad of organic greens, vanilla lavender vinaigrette, poached pears and goats cheese. Moules Frites. Croque Monsieur. This is just a brief sample. Wish I lived closer."

  • "Beautiful setting with an amazing sunset. The service was exceptional and the food was outstanding. I will definitely return very soon."

  • "Food was essentially tasteless. Lobster cake appetizer--two ridiculously small bites for $12--was unbelievable. Calamari awful. Steals overdone. Only lamb was passable. This was particularly hard to swallow when bill for six people (with minimal alcohol) was over $300!!"

  • "We arrived and they had no record of our Open Rable reservation even when I showed them the email confirmation. The host staff was nice but young and disorganized. When finally got a table our waitress was totally disinterested in us although she spent a great deal of time chatting with a group nearby. After asking for bread twice it finally arrived. My husband ordered a drink which never arrived. The food was average at best. A very disappointing experience because I had heard such wonderful things about this place. The best part was the lovely sunset!"

  • "The service at PI Grille was outstanding from start to finish and the ambiance was great too: casual, beachy, open and bright. I ordered the plum island salad--simple greens with a few shavings of parmesan cheese and, strangely, the salad arrived undressed, so I had to request a side of viniagrette. As a main dish, I ordered the smaller plate of scallops. I wanted to switch the leek cream to a lighter option, but the chef would not accommodate my request. The scallops were well prepared in any event and the sauce was tasty. We left satisfied, and it looked like other people were happy with their choices, but since a simple request was denied, we probably won't dine there again."

  • "Seafood was universally disappointing. Seared tuna was old, limp and tasteless, luckily it was a very small portion. The swordfish was a end remnant, undersized and overcooked. Wait staff was overworked and distracted. Window table was appreciated, but heavy dust fell of blinds, on to table, when waitress adjusted them. Overall poor experience, especially for price."

  • "We enjoyed a great breeze while having dinner and drinks at the wonderful bar! Our bartender was very engaging and handled a busy crowd with ease. The Plum Island Punch and sangria are very refreshing after hanging out at the beach (a short walk away) or a day of exploring the island/ nearby Newburyport. We were there during a World Cup soccer match so the noise level was a tad more boisterous than usual. All in all, a great evening!"

  • "The food and service here were excellent! My wife enjoyed the countneck clams-she ordered it as an entree. I had the veal porterhouse and it was outstanding-as was the Mexican brownie we shared for dessert. The only reason I rated the ambience as low as I did was the party in the corner with 3 young children. One of them shrieked intermittently the whole time we were there. The mother would scold the child but never made a move to take the child outside and calm it down. I felt that at some point the restaurant could have encouraged her to do so."

  • "I have long been a fan of the Plum Island Grill and would go out of my way to be the first in line for outdoor seating. However, when my husband and I went last weekend (first time this year) I was disappointed. The menu was tired, the service decent but not great, and the prices too high for what I was getting. It's time for me to start looking for a new gem."

  • "The pan seared sea scallops were terrific as well as the Thai seafood stew. Unique combination of flavors in all our dishes. We'll be back!"

  • "Be Careful when using open table to make reservations as they marked my party cancelled even though we checked in and had dinner. I phoned when I received a cancellation email and phoned the Restaurant and the Waitress we had answered the phone and promised to do so, but never did - I had to dispute this matter for several weeks - I find that very dishonest. Food is good, service mediocre but the area is what makes it."

  • "We were seated by the "sunset" side windows - a lovely ambience. I had the roast lamb (I know, strange for summer dining) and it was really good - perfectly cooked. The waiter was very gracious and helpful about substituting for roast potatoes & broccolini - I had sautéed spinach and mango basmati rice (both offered on other entrees). The noise level grew as we lingered (from 5:30 - 7:30). We both had the sancerre wine - fitting for the luscious summer evening. All in all, a very pleasant experience. I would return!!"

  • "I was with a group of four people and we very much enjoyed our meals. Our only critique was on the key lime pie that didn't have that tart key lime taste like it should. Otherwise great service and good atmosphere."

  • "First time back in several years after disappointing service and average food. This time was much better and the seafood was very fresh. Nice selection of wines by the bottle and by the glass."

  • "thoroughly enjoyed our food experience having three of us for dinner - have been there many times, but at the bar and not for dinner - great menu too! Your staff are outstanding, friendly, attentive and obvious team work seen all around on all levels - keep up the great work!!"

  • "We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and we were told "your table is in the tent". We were escorted through the busy energetic restaurant and into an overflow tent which at one point was parking that had maybe 6 tables. We were the only ones there staring into the open doors of the restaurant. We commented that it was pretty quiet and were told they'd try to turn on some music. As we waiting we realized that it was cold and windy in this unheated tent and at that point asked for another table lest we leave. We were moved inside. Food and service were then great. We witnessed at least 2 other parties opt to not stay in "the tent"."

  • "Dinner at Plum Island Grille is a great way to kick off the summer. Food was delicious and service was attentive and friendly. Prices are rather high, but they're counting on tourists (like us) to foot the bill. My one major complaint has to do with cleanliness. We were seated near the window, which I thought was a bonus. However, once I saw the amount of dust on the blinds and the dirt, dust and dead bugs on the windowsill, I was rather disgusted. I beg the restaurant to do a better job of cleaning so that no one else has to look at that grime while eating at your restaurant. It really didn't look like it had been cleaned in years. Yuck."

  • "We had a wonderful time, we were out celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary and we chose P. I. G. because we new we would have a great meal. The service was refreshing and spot on. It really is difficult to get truly good service and you have provided that. Thank you again. Mackenzie was our server, she is a real fined, ask for her. We will be back. "

  • "I brought my Mom and we had a great time. It was very busy but the atmosphere was great! The oysters were a bit small for the cost but the scallops made up for them! I love this place and was happy to share it with her."

  • "Parking is tight, but the location is wonderful, with views of the marshlands of Plum Island. The Sunday brunch menu was full of great options, with lots of breakfast and lunch choices. The catch of the day choices as well as desserts were a hit with our small group. The portions were good and no one left hungry. I would strongly recommend reservations. "

  • "We live about 45 minutes away, but for the last 5 years it has been our family tradition to have Mother's Day Brunch there. We love the outdoor seating, which really isn't all that outdoors anymore since they enclosed the screened in porch with real windows that open up to let in the breeze and they added a gas fireplace for I guess cooler evenings. The food is excellent with decent sized portions (neither my husband, nor I could finish our meal and had to take the rest to go) and the service was wonderful too. The view is beautiful over looking the marshes and the drive to get there is quite scenic as well. Plum Island Grill is one of my favorites. Make a reservation as they do fill up."

  • "We wanted to try the Plum Island Grille for a long time and summer-like weather for Mother's Day weekend seemed like the perfect opportunity. It always draws a crowd and after our experience I have to wonder why. The food is average, and Newburyport has many quality restaurants from which to select. We were greeted by a woman, who was our waitress as well and whenever you get the feeling that you are doing them a favor by showing up, that is not a good sign(exception was the young man who served water and brought bread...he was quite pleasant). Yes, the view is great...I imagine watching the sunset from the bar is fantastic, but great views and food are plentiful throughout Newburyport. "

  • "I love the Plum Island Grill. I've been there a few times and always have had a great time. The food is pretty good, but I wouldn't call it great. Don't get me wrong, I like everything I've gotten, but I think there might be better menus in the area. If you like a little heat, try the Thai Seafood Stew. You can get the Mussels as an appertizer if you want a preview. It's the ambiance that I love about this place. Service has always been great as well. The noise level can get pretty loud, so not the place for a quiet romantic dinner, but it's fun and "

  • "We have not lived in Newburyport long but have come to love the Plum Island Grille. It's funky, friendly, and fun. The food is great and you feel just kind of happy when you go inside. The hamburgers are fabulous, so are the fries. We've had steamed mussels, fish and chips, the salads, and several entres. The servers are friendly and make you feel so welcomed. Call ahead or go early because it's always full!"
