Particularly good at seafood dishes, which you would expect from a seaside restaurant, but upscale (no fried food here). Always fun. Good service, bar. Nice off-season visit, as we had no problem getting a table for seven on a Friday night (not so easy in the summer).

My wife and I rented on the island during the last week of October 2014. We had never been to this restaurant previously. We decided to try the Grille on Halloween, at 6:15 p.m., our last night before driving home. There were 3 other tables occupied in the dining room when we arrived. The room was cold. We both ordered the lamb entree. The lamb itself was tasty and prepared as requested, however, the quantity of lamb was profoundly insufficient for any adult - 4 pieces, each less than 1/4 inch thick, and perhaps 2 square inches each. The side dish. consisting primarily of beans baled inn a small dish, was unappetizing. The root vegetable puree was edible but bland. The prices of this restaurant are not reflected in the quality of the food.

Nice little place for dinner. Fish is fresh and menu is great. Portions are more than adequate. However, table for two was barely enough room to fit plates. And while we love the food, the new martini/drink menu left a lot to be desired. We tried three of the new drinks and they were all not very good. They should stick to the basics.

The owner and chef greeted us and made sure I had a meal that was safe for me to eat and delicious. I have a few things that I cannot eat like gluten and pepper. He customized a dish of scallops so that I didn't have to miss out. Many restaurants simply offer up plain seared meat with nothing on it and a salad without dressing. That's always so disappointing but I accept it so we can still have a date night. My husband was totally satisfied with his meal as well. The only detractor was the seats were uncomfortable and the table was really small. It was hard to relax. I was afraid I was going to knock something on the floor.

I've been to Plum Island Grille (PIG)at least 20 times over the years. Though noisy, always great food and ambience. Then yesterday (Wednesday) I needed a place to take out of state visitors on short notice so picked PIG as a great local place. I made reservations, no problem. When I arrive the main restaurant is CLOSED. They are only using the bar building. And seats at high tables are very uncomfortable, I feel I am 6" higher than my guests, and there are no window tables. I ordered my usual shrimp tempura only to find they changed the batter recipe and no more carrot salad. Now its just greasy fried shrimp. At least the crème brulee was still excellent! If you're not going to open the restaurant, TELL ME.

When I first came to Newburyport, this is the first place a local recommended eating. I didn't get to eat here until nearly a year and a half later, and it was so worth the wait. The atmosphere is casual, and the food is extremely good. Fantastic service and menu. I would dedinitely come here time and time again.

Had not been to PIG in a while. We had one night out to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We were assigned an undesirable table. The hostess gladly switched us. The hostess and waitress were very pleasant. The oyster menu was sticky and soggy. The appetizer was very minimal - not great value for the price (scallop and tuna dish). Calamari was tasty. The lamb was not cooked well and the mashed potatoes were cold. No good excuse to serve cold mashies. Could be our bad for ordering lamb in a restaurant that specializes in fish, but if it is on the menu you would expect it to be worth the risk. Waitress was very kind, although did take longer than appropriate to return to the table and check in at times. The restaurant was not that busy.

Made the reservation for 7:00 PM. We were promptly seated. The menu has a good selection of appetizers. We had the Plum Island Clams and the Seared Tuna and Scallop Cerviche and they were delicious. For entree, we had the Blacken Cod and the Lamb. Both were well prepared. Dessert were tasty. The only disappointment was no Cappacino but the coffee was very good. All in all a very enjoyable dinner.

Table squeezed against wall, couldn't have seated patrons any larger, hit my head on the mantel behind me. Asked to have the candle lit, hostess went to get matches came back & flipped the switch under candle. No bread, until I asked, well after wine arrived. No help with the specials. Tempura shrimp I would not call tempura, batter heavy, too greasy, pieces so large couldn't use chop sticks. Cut a lot of batter off. Scallops under cooked, poached pear salad good. Waitress inattentive, no checking on our wine, barely offered coffee or dessert. Hostess clearing nearby table spritzed my legs & feet with what she used to clean the table. Disappointing service, overall experience & food, won't be back

I got the scallop special...the food was stunning, presentation was delightful, and the craftsmanship of the chef shone through!!!...mixed w/ a great staff, a stunning location, made for a great night...will definitely be back!!

This was our first time here but have passed by 100 times on route to the Refuge; We had an early reservation at 5PM, so the restaurant was not too crowded, the bar was jumping. I ordered the tuna special, my wife the lamb, both dishes were luke warm, my wife's boarding on chilly, we debated about sending it back but our server was not around and went ahead and finished it. We did tell the server that the dish was not warm, the potatoes on my wife's plate were stone cold by the time we finished, I'm not sure she actually told the chef, I guess on future trips to the refuge I'll keep going!

Everything was wonderful. The server knew her stuff and the menu was tempting. The only problem we encountered was that we were seated near a family that was packed into a table that had one or two extra people. We felt like we were sitting with them and there were other tables open at the time...We did have a reservation. Everything else was terrific and we would go back anytime!

This was our second try, after a disappointing celebratory dinner a while ago. I made an 8pm reservation and I called to confirm that morning. We arrived promptly at 8 and weren't seated until 8:30. We were told by the hostess that they would "try to do something to make up for our long wait", but nothing was mentioned or done. The restaurant had run out of the cod that I wanted to order - perhaps if we had been seated 30 minutes earlier, at the time of our reservation, I would have been able to have the cod. I ordered the salad with 3 grilled shrimp ($3/shrimp - REALLY?!) as a last minute decision because I was starving and didn't want to send the waitress away. Will not be returning.

we enjoyed the evening but.....I had the thai shrimp dish....I'm a fussy diner...shrimp were overcooked...it is tricky to do shrimp well....but for the price I really wanted to have them pop in my mouth but they were dry.... the bread was a bit dry also,...might be better to serve less of it and serve with a little dipping oil....since there was no butter, this was a little disappointing. Wine choices were very nice, the pinot noir on the list is very good. thanks for asking. the reservation process was easy and reliable.

Had heard about Plum Island Grille for some time and decided to try it while staying in Newburyport for a few days. Not disappointed one bit. We went on a Monday night so it was not crowded at 6:30 and had a window seat to watch the sunset as requested in the reservation. Might be a bit noisy when full but our night was great as was the service and friendliness of the staff.

We have dined here many times before being a local and I rarely give extremely bad reviews. I made an online reservation for 6:45 for 8/9, but then called the next day to change it to 8pm. I should have known that everyone loves this place now, and it is so over crowded and noisy it is not worth it to fight the crowds on a weekend night in the summer. We were sat at a very small table near the fireplace, so small my husband hit his head on it, the tables are jammed packed inside and the outside deck was over an hour wait. To make a long story short, our drinks never came, there was a private party going on, we never ordered any food and walked out and explained to the hostess on the way why we were leaving. Over crowed and under staffed!

Restaurant has a vibrant, fun, vibe. It was crazy busy on Saturday night as they had a 60th birthday party in the tented seating area so fewer tables then normal were available. Strongly suggest reservations. Lobster cake appetizer was excellent, organic green salad was nothing special but grilled salmon with olive tapenade was excellent. Fococia bread was stale and they had no cappuccino available. Parking is difficult but overall worth it. Took a walk along the beach after dinner and watched the fireworks in the distance- not something you can do in most restaurants.

The staff was very friendly. Several of the tables wobbled and required a napkin or piece of paper folded up beneath the stand. There was some sort of event going on in a tent connected to the restaurant and this increased the noise level a great deal. Also, the salmon I ordered was burnt on the bottom. For $28 a plate I expect better.

Plum Island Grille provides consistently great food and very good service, and is our go-to restaurant for out-of-town guests, particularly on the last night of their visit. Be sure to make reservations, though -- this is a tough place to find seats, particularly in summer and on weekends. This week, we were there for dinner. We shared the shrimp tempura appetizer, had both the anjou pear and mixed green salads, scallop and shrimp penne pasta and a construct-it-yourself sauteed scallop dinner. Service was outstanding, portions were generous, and the food was all wonderful.

Right by the beach, pretty and great sunsets. Its interesting because it has a beachy casual vibe but the food is in the fine dining category. Nice to not have a flourescent green Margarita the way most places serve them, bu it just wasn't very good. The "summer lemonade" was also disappointing-a bit bitter. The mussels were awesome. The swordfish was nicely presented and very good. The downsides: wimpy cold bread, confused lackluster staff and the drinks. We had two waitpeople--apparently they both thought they had our table. Overall the staff was more consistent with a chain restaurant. Nice people but not on their game. I would try this place again for sure...it could just have been an off night. Work on those drinks!

My wife and I sat outside for a couple of minutes wondering what we were doing. If you park your car with your back to the marsh, the one story shack with picture windows and a bar is where you'll be eating. Don't hesitate. Go in. Sit at the bar. The food is nothing short of remarkable. The menu is varied and, for a place this small, extensive. I'm not talking about a really good hamburger. I'm talking about a lunch menu with a salad of organic greens, vanilla lavender vinaigrette, poached pears and goats cheese. Moules Frites. Croque Monsieur. This is just a brief sample. Wish I lived closer.

We arrived and they had no record of our Open Rable reservation even when I showed them the email confirmation. The host staff was nice but young and disorganized. When finally got a table our waitress was totally disinterested in us although she spent a great deal of time chatting with a group nearby. After asking for bread twice it finally arrived. My husband ordered a drink which never arrived. The food was average at best. A very disappointing experience because I had heard such wonderful things about this place. The best part was the lovely sunset!

The service at PI Grille was outstanding from start to finish and the ambiance was great too: casual, beachy, open and bright. I ordered the plum island salad--simple greens with a few shavings of parmesan cheese and, strangely, the salad arrived undressed, so I had to request a side of viniagrette. As a main dish, I ordered the smaller plate of scallops. I wanted to switch the leek cream to a lighter option, but the chef would not accommodate my request. The scallops were well prepared in any event and the sauce was tasty. We left satisfied, and it looked like other people were happy with their choices, but since a simple request was denied, we probably won't dine there again.
