- DisappointingOlymomVIPDined on 8/23/2014Our concierge recommended Plouf for fish and chips, though it's a French spot. The "alley" location is kind of claustrophobic and I'm not crazy about dining with pigeons so I suggest sitting inside. The staff was friendly, but maybe because they weren't busy, it felt like they hovered. The clam chowder was possibly the worst I've had; watery, few clams, with nearly uncooked bacon and potatoes. Maybe it got better when it cooked longer. The fish (cod) and chips wasn't bad, though the batter was too soggy on the inside for my taste, a common problem. The fries were pretty good. I wouldn't expect these foods at a French restaurant so I was surprised the concierge recommended them. Not a good choice for us.Special Features:

The service was good, but the food awful. The one dish in the party that was edible was the butter fish. The shrimp and grits were served cold. The grits were gunked up with horseradish and grease and were cold. Don't order that dish if you go. Lastly, steer clear of any "specials".

The waiter gave us no direction in our wine selection, only offering for us to try what we had questions about which took a long time, interrupted conversation and ended with us choosing something we didn't love because we didn't want to keep asking after 3 tries! We split some mussels (not exciting) and duck (not cooked to our order). We finished with Creme Brulee (too big and too sweet). So besides the ambiance and the occasion of having a dinner with a dear friend and no children, Plouf was a bust.Special Features:

They have other food also, like hamburgers, which the table next to us had an order. They raved how good it was. So, if you want to have some good seafood, and have a person who just is not into that, you may have found your new place. Also, get an order of fries for the table with your order of mussels. The sauce was fabulous but the mussels were tiny. I expected at least some of them to be large or medium sized as I have had at other places. Each shell had a small piece of mussel in it and the bottom of the bowl didn't have much more. I don't know if that is typical or unusual. However the wait staff was very good, the salad delicious as was my friend's duck entree and we enjoyed the wine and after dinner coffee. I just wondered "where's the mussels?"Special Features:

The fish and chips dish used to be a fresh lightly battered variety of fish. Now it's one solid piece of over fried cod. Gave me indigestion. Won't be back.

- Very DisappointedmortDined on 7/29/2014The outdoor seating is nice as well as the interior. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The cocktails were solid. The food was terrible. We had the pre-fix, clam chowder, mussels and desert for $30. We also ordered a dozen oysters (we had to ask the server what kind they were). The server misheard our order and thought we only ordered one pre fix instead of two. The chowder was very watery, had only two clams, and was separating (there was oil floating the on top). There were barely any vegetables in the chowder. When the mussels arrived the kitchen hadn't bothered to remove the beards from 70% of the mussels. The creme brulee was warm and runny. The cheesecake was OK. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

This time I had the mussels/clams combo in Poulette. My stomach hurt for an entire day afterward. My daughter had the combo in the coconut milk broth and she also had stomach issues for the next day. Al fresco dining with some fantastically fresh food, especially the mussels which are a must, well it's just delightful. The gravlax was delicious but the poor selection of bread for the sandwich and the mayo and ice berg lettuce made me take the sandwich apart and just eat the gravlax with the side salad. The sandwich was impossible to eat because it wasn't pressed and cut small enough the way club sandwiches are so all the ingredients slid apart. One of my companions had the Oysters Rockefeller which she said were delicious. The fried eggplant heirloom salad was a nice idea but I thought the breaded fried eggplant was way too heavy and a mismatch for the heirlooms. I think I would try this place again and have the mussels which seem to be the house specialty.Special Features:

The food was good, but they seemed a little unprepared for Bastille Day; ie: stuffing menus and putting up balloons around 5:30. They had also removed all the chairs from the bar, except the 2-5 being used, which was odd. I work in a restaurant, so I understand, but when I arrived early to meet a friend for a drink, I asked a server if there was another chair, and he just said, "no, sorry!" without offering an alternative? Could we sit somewhere else? Should I stand until my reservation? Should we go somewhere nearby instead? He didn't even ask if I had a reservation. They were extremely small and quite disappointing, perhaps due to the time of year. Beef carpaccio appetizer did not even rise to the level of mediocre, it was the most bland example of such I can recall ever having. Desserts were good.

When we did want to order, the same staff acted as if we were invisible. Then, drinks we ordered were never delivered and we WERE charged for them. This place is a 'business lunch' destination. I appreciate that they want to be sure and help customers keep the whole process to within an hour or so, but they need to be able to sense when lunchtime diners want to enjoy lively discussion and a more leisurely dining experience.Special Features:

The coleslaw with the fired oysters had so much Tabasco on it it was inedible. The Oysters Rockefeller were cream spinach with an oyster and too many stale pale crumbs. The fish and chips had limp chips (the fish was fresh, but tasteless) and was served with cheap ready-made tarter sauce (Best Foods from Safeway, anyone?).

The dinner got off to a great start when they generously comped us each a glass of champagne when we sat down and it only got better from there. We shared the calamari appetizer which was excellent. I had the poulette mussels (so good!), my husband had the duck (divine) and we finished off on the perfect sweet note with vanilla ice cream mixed with peach and raspberry compotes. When I pointed out the error, the server took it away and then I waited for 10 minutes without anyone addressing the incident before receiving my burger. I was surprised our waiter didn't come over at least to explain a burger was being prepared. I was just left waiting. My wife said the mussels were good but not as delicious as they usually are. Another person in my party had to send her fish back to be cooked longer. And the restaurant was only 25% full at that point, so it is not like it was too busy to execute well. I'm sure I will give it another chance, but it was definitely a let-down.
