Diner Reviews
  • "When I pulled up I thought "this may be a bit too hipster for me", but it wasn't. Decor is straight out of American Pickers. Aside from the seating being a bit tight in some places, the total experience was really excellent. Maybe we got lucky, but our Waiter, Zack was great for a youngster. All of the food was pretty authentic, especially the cocktails which was more on the savory than sweet side (more Mexican than north american). The food was ALL VERY GOOD. I tried 5 different tacos and couldn't decide my favorite. The guacamole was fresh and hand made. I don't like any seafood and yet my wife's shrimp looked so good, I ate 2 of the 14 large shrimp she got in an appetizer, grilled to perfection I might add. We will be back!"

  • "I've been at least 5 times. Great spot. I always get the tacos, love 'em. They changed the margaritas - the old ones were better, I liked the one with Grand Marnier. Of the 2 new options, one is too tart (and I typically like a little tartness) and the other is too sweet - they can do better on the margaritas. The Paloma was good."

  • "This was my second time at this restaurant and the food is amazing, the staff is friendly and attentive but not overbearing. The first time I came with a big group and it was a lot of fun, the second time was for a double date and it was a great environment. Their drink list is very notable and their food is amazing. Be prepared to wait a little bit longer than you may be used to for tacos but they are worth every minute! They are made to order and fresh, the ingredients are insane and they are filling. Everything on their menu is delicious and don't skip out on the churro poutine it is by far the best dessert. Definitely fit for foodies!"

  • "This restaurant camed recommended by several friends. Saturday night is too crowded and loud for my preference. This time I went on Saturday at noon and was remarkably impressed. The food is absolutely incredible! I devoured my Enchiladas Rojas, knowing that if i brought it home for left-overs there was no way it could be as delicious when warmed up. My friend had the veggie burrito "Street Style" (means you're supposed to pick it up and eat it with your hands) but it was just so chock full of veggie goodness that she finally resorted to using a knife and fork. She also agreed that warmed up left overs just wouldn't be able to compare to it when it's fresh & hot. Can't wait to go back again."

  • "I have been to this restaurant a few times before and everything was very good. I went on a first date on Friday night and the server that I got was extremely rude, his attitude was cocky and arrogant and I left feeling embarrassed. Overall the gentleman certainly ruined my night which doesn't happen very often to me. Because of this I will not ever go back again. The restaurant overall was very good the food was very good and the manager at the end of the night spoke to me and he was very polite as well, this just would go to show that one inexperienced server can really have an effect on someone's dining experience."

  • "Aside from the great food choices, great service times, food at a good pace and no one rushing you out. As a tequila junkie, i was very impressed with the variety, size of the shot, and the prices were not outrageous. Going back to another location as there will be other tequila choices to make."

  • "We went for my hubby's birthday and had a great time! The tacos were amazing! and so many creative variations! I kinda regret ordering a burrito so ate my husband's tacos. The kept the birthday cake cool for us until ready to serve. Great vibe and excellent food! Although they do have high-chairs, we were able to get a sitter at the last minute, which worked out b/c don't think this is an ideal place for kids and limited kids menu items."

  • "Our dinner was a series of mishaps and disappointments. We were refused a confirmed table then served rubberized calamari and bizarrely flavourless corn. Taco fillings were lackluster, and the fried versions greasy. Wine options were extremely limited. Service was apologetic and competent buy harried. Noise level was over the top, even at 6pm. Love the neighbourhood, and love tacos, but this place is grim."

  • "I had lunch service. There was construction next door which I understand is not under their control but it made it hard to enjoy or speak to each other. The tacos I had were fine but the sangria I ordered was not made well. It tasted like only red wine and nothing else."

  • "Came here for the third time--this time for a special occasion and with a reservation. We live in the area and enjoy frequenting the local spots. I would definitely recommend reservations, as the tables have more space to accommodate all the delicious food! Loved the grilled squid and fish tacos. Mixed tequila drinks are a little on the pricey side, but taste fresh and so the price is expected. We received excellent service (we did not tell them it was a birthday meal.)"

  • "I went there for my Birthday Celebration last Saturday, with my best friends' and their baby girl. They not only were very accomodating with her, providing a high chair and a stack of napkins for her so she can see over the table, our server Zach made it a memorable experience. The food was fantastic, however Zach provided 5 star service that you would see in fine dining restaurants. I was very impressed and will be returning in the near future!"

  • "High energy place, loud, busy, reservations well in advance are an absolute must. Fried fish tacos, and scallop tacos were insanely good. Fresh guac and chips hit the spot. Most drinks can be ordered in pitchers, my favourite was mojito. Bit tart, and very minty, delish. "

  • "Very disappointed in the quality of service and food. We had been loyal to Playa Cabana Cantina for quite some time. Always loved the food and the service. This time was an entire disappointment. We were sat right beside the kitchen, able to hear all of the staff's conversations about their personal business etc... This was suppose to be a nice celebration for my husband's birthday and we were nothing but distracted. When the food came, we did not receive the appetizer we had ordered, the portions of the food were very sad to say the least (usually there is almost too much food). My dish was the pepper vegetarian plate...smothered in cheese, far too much to enjoy the dish...so I did not eat it. Was not taken care of. "

  • "Playa Cabana restaurants have the best Mexican food in Toronto - I could eat it every day..... I like all 3 locations but I think the best prepared one is at the main Playa Cabana. Cantina has more space and very pleasant atmosphere. "

  • "Service was great our waiter was witty, attentive and knew the menu very well. The lobster tacos were really delicious with big pieces of the claw and tail! Cocktails were delicious ( mojito and Paloma) We had a great time, would recommend it. "

  • "We have been to Hacienda, the original Playa Cabana and Cantina - we loved all three but Cabana and Cantina were our favorites. Going back again next weekend to take our friends out for their anniversary. Food never disappoints. Great atmosphere, food, drinks and service. Love it - highly recommend this place! "

  • "This is my second visit to a Playa Cabana location. I had a fun dinner a year ago at the Dupont location. It's great to have a restaurant like this, happening and casual, in The Junction. There is definitely a formula going on with this "chain" which is good to see. The food is tasty, but not special. The drinks are good. The service is efficient for a busy place. It's got a great lively atmosphere. I would recommend it for get togethers or large groups where the food is second to the socializing. "

  • "Food is excellent, service is friendly but very rushed. Food comes out all at once and you feel you have to eat quickly to make room on the table. We were in and out in 40 minutes. "

  • "Took a taco tour that was very interesting and delicious. Also sampled some very yummy margs. Lively atmosphere and yes noisy but appropriate for the venue. We highly recommend it (though it might not be the best choice for your picky younger eater). The decor was eclectic, casual and representative of the Junction. We are looking forward to our next visit."

  • "This was our third time at the restaurant and had seen some pretty bad reviews and they were all unfounded. The "hipster" vibe is alive and well but where is it not? The food was great, drinks were great service was timely and attentive. Will be going back again."

  • "I was nervous after reading some of the comments here... but it was great! Our table wasn't ready when we arrived, although we were early and our whole party wasn't even there yet. We sat at the bar and had a drink. When our reservation time had passed, the hostess was very apologetic and said the people at our table wouldn't leave but that they had their bill and had been told people were waiting. Our server also came and introduced himself and said he would have the table turned around as soon as they left. As soon as we sat down they brought us complimentary chips and guac as an apology. We all loved our tacos and I can't wait to go back for more!"

  • "When you walk into playa cabana's cantina, your senses are instantly excited by fluorescent signage and artsy tequila bottles that fill up the wall space behind the bar. Although the tables are perfect for larger parties of four to six, if you swing by solo or in a party of two, be sure to hang out at the bar, where the bartender (Ray) will make your evening! He has extensive knowledge on the menu and the drinks that come with it, but most impressive was the passion he shared with his diners over Cantina's tequila list. He recommended the perfect combination of tacos and delighted us with the perfect tequila for dessert! These aren't your typical shooters, and they're worth every penny for a night you won't soon forget!"
