Plaka Taverna in Shawnessy is our go-to place for special occasions and fantastic Greek food and service. We always feel good from the moment we walk through the door. Service is always terrific, and the warmth and hospitality makes us feel we are eating with good friends.

The food was fair to poor. A very small Greek salad (3 olives, crunchy green tomato a few slices of cucumber and some feta) was $13. The spanikopita was flat soft and very greasy. The calamari was soggy and under cooked. The server/owner was quite grumpy. The fact that the restaurant was nearly empty at dinner time should have been an indication of the level of quality and service that we would receive. The restaurant claims to be child friendly, yet they don't have high chairs. I understand, that having kids in a fancy restaurant is frowned upon, this restaurants cheesy decor and coke served in a can, hardly left us to feel that that as a family we were dining out of our league. I digress. To sum it up... Disappointing.

A friend who now lives in Costra Rica was in town and we decided to do lunch. I asked her what food she couldn't get in Costa Rica and that she missed the most and without hesitation she replied, "Greek". So to Plaka we went. We ordered the appetizer platter for two and were not disappointed with anything on it. The platter was licked (not literally) clean. We also ordered a piece of baklava for dessert and it was clearly homemade and very yummy. Our server Tony was most attentive and even threw in a couple of glasses of wine, "on the house". I will most defintely be back to try one of the lamb dishes.

Appetizers were quite good, service pleasant, however the Chicken had a sauce that was like prego bottled Italian and the lamb shank was tough - had not been cooked long enough. the meat on a shank should fall off the bone. Over all the menu and kitchen needs a revamp.

Google maps has this place pinned wrong. Our food took over 40mins to come out after ordering. The server asked me if I wanted another ginger-ale and charged me for it without telling me it would be an extra charge. I ordered the roast lamb that was over cooked, dry and lacking flavour. My wife ordered the lamb chops and hers were dry as well. The worst part is all our entrees were $20~25. The vegetables that came with our dish; unappealing green beans cooked in some sort of tomato and onion puree. The green beans were like mush and tasted like it came from a can or was cooked from frozen. Menus were sticky and looked like they had not been wiped down in years. The walls had lots of dust and the picture frames had a layer of grease.

Owners were nice, food very average, quite a small venue. Dolmades was mushy, This was a first visit for us. New to Calgary, Still looking for an exceptional greek restaurant. Seemed like the chef was inexperienced or the food was not fresh. We would not return to Plaka again.

We went to Plaka for our weekly night out dinner. The owner was our waiter and he was amazing. We had a greek salad, pita and dip, and the Plaka platter. Everything was very tasty and plentiful. Much more affordable than similar platter meals at other Greek establishments in Calgary. We will be back.

Dining at Plaka Taverna is like being in a family-run, Greek cafe on the shores of the Mediterranean. The service is warm and friendly, and the food is wonderful! If you are interested, the waiter will give you information on the marinating of the meat, and the best place to find Greek olive oil. It is small and intimate. We were delighted to see it had joined Open Table, since it is one of our favourite restaurants in the south end of Calgary.
