This was our second time and it was even better than the first. The first time the service was off, but not this time. Friendly, efficient and the food is very very good. I have a hard time giving any restaurant "outstanding" when OpenTable uses the same ranking whether it's for the neighborhood pizza joint or for French Laundry or Gary Danko. Plaj is "outstanding" for what it is - a small, friendly, laid back mid-priced place with really excellent food.

We wanted to find a restaurant that had something to do with the play we we seeing at the Sunday matinee of CalShakes - "Hamlet"! It would be too late for a ham omelet anywhere and there was no strictly Danish restaurant in town. So, the new Scandinavian place, PLAJ, seemed as near as we would get. Good thing too. We had a 7:30 reservation, called to say we would be 45 minutes late, table was ready and we began the adventure with some rather bizarre, but tasty, house specialty cocktails. We then shared the Charcuteri plate, three appetizers (Hagen), two fish courses (Fjord), and the cheese plate. All was very good and washed down with excellent Scandinavian beers. The noise level dropped when the soccer team left.

Loved this. Delicious food unlike anywhere else in San Francisco -- my friend talked me into the herring appetizer and it was terrific. Avoided herring throughout my childhood where it came from a Vita jar, but this was a different experience. They are still working out some of the opening bugs (were out of most of the wines by the glass, but our agreeable waitress brought us several for me to try in replacement) but I expect to return here again and again. Very reasonably priced for this quality -- we shared two appetizers, two entrees, and had 3 cocktails/glasses of wine between us, and the bill was $90 before tip.

This was our first visit to Plaj and we had a terrific time, great before the opera. It is of extremely good value, in comparison to restaurant around the corner. Very good food and service very attentive. I do not think this place call for a community table, people who were assigned it were very unhappy and I do not blame them. I would not be happy with a community table if I am with a group of friends or another couple. I had the beetsalad it was delicious though a bit on the salty side, the halibut was outstanding with a delicious condiments and sauce. My partner had the cheeks and loved it, the burrata was delicious. I appreciate the fact that they used Swedish butterknives. We will definatley go again and highly recommend to anyone.

A most welcome addition to the Civic center area. I was in a rush before the symphony and alone, so all I can comment on are the Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes, ligon berries....Just the thing for a quick bite and as outstanding as meatballs can be. I was disappointed not to have a chance to try some of the more unusual dishes. However, the staff was mostimpressive. All had a great attitude and were most obliging even 'tho it was obvious I wouldn't create a huge bill. From valet to servers to bar...all were about the nicest I've encountered for ages + very alert, but not hovering. Somebody is obviously putting in the effort to make this venue outstanding. And, did I mention you can leave your car with the valet until af

Plaj is a great addition to the cadre of pre-performance dining options. Pleasant space and a fun menu that is a mix of traditional Scandinavian dishes and new twists. We started with the burrata with heirloom tomatoes which was a pretty presentation, but the long thin greens were a bit hard to eat. I thought the lobster (cold) with the foam and avocado (it is California!) as my second course was light and lovely. We also tried the meatballs which were nicely spiced and served with creamy mashed potatoes and lingonberries . Herring trio was also tasty. Will definitely return!

The food was interesting and different; I had never been to a Swedish restaurant before and the extent of my prior experience with Swedish food was meatballs. The asparagus appetizer and the ox cheek entre were both delicious. Friends who had the Swedish meatballs were slightly disappointed. My advice is to be adverturesome! The huge negative, and it's very bad, is the service. Horrible. Trying to flag down someone to get water was a task. When I sat down at 6:30 I specifically told the waitress we were going to the opera at 8pm. The wait between courses was painful and the coffee we ordered at 7:30 arrived at 7:50 to be quickly consumed, followed with a dash to the opera. Not the relaxing dinner experience I look forward to.

Service was friendly, but totally disorganized. They never even returned my call when I made a reservation on their voicemail. So, I went on Open Table a week later. Others with reservations made 3 weeks earlier ended up sharing a table with strangers. They couldn't make their credit card machine work. It took 20 minutes to get our check, and even then could not give us a receipt. Some patrons ended up late for the opera. I got receipts by text message later, and they followed up with a phone call offering 20% off the next time I go. The decor was crazy. They should have kept the furnishings from the last restaurant. Their food was excellent, but if they can't get their act together, it won't matter.

The food is the star at Plaj. Everything we tried was very good from mustard greens and tomato salad, herring 3 ways through cheeses and dessert (light yummy chocolate torte with orange and cloudberry). The service was disjointed but very friendly and knowledgable. It might have been an "off" night or perhaps they need a more attentive front-of-house manager. The dining rooms feel like a hotel dining room but it's fine and comfortable with some nice touches (like the chairs). We will definitely go back. I am still thinking about the Swedish meatballs.

Everything we had was amazing. The cocktails were deliciously infused with herbs and spices depending on which you ordered. As usual the weather was chilly making all of the Scandinavian food the perfect compliment. I seriously do not think that a single plate went back to the kitchen with any sauce left on it. Sadly, I fear that the next time I try to get a reservation my timing will need to be greatly more flexible...Plaj is about to blow up on the restaurant scene! Get in while you can.

The food was outstanding-- delicious and subtle, we wanted to explore the menu so we split 6 (tapa size) plates, which was more than enough food for two hearty eaters. The main drawback to the evening-- our waiter (who was also the bartender) knocked over a glass of red wine with such force that it literally drenched my dining companion. They made no offer to pay for his dry cleaning or to comp any of our meal. I expect better at an establishment of this caliber.

I was looking on yelp to find a new place that had opened in my neighborhood when I came across Plaj. I was surprised that I'd never heard of it before. I didn't know that the restaurant at the Inn at the Opera had changed hands. I read the reviews and became very excited to try it. Ambience was very nice, classical wood paneling, fire place in the first room. Seats were moderately comfortable. Some of the interior choices were a little out of Place. Bright orange chairs on the large table looked out of Place with the room and the other furnishing. Food and Service were excellent. The chef really knows what he is doing. Everything we had was superb. One phenomenal dish of gastronomic splendor was the Dumplings! Beyond words!

As a Swede, I was very excited when I heard a Scandinavian restaurant had finally opened in San Francisco -- the "new Nordic" cuisine is trendy, but it's taken some time for it to reach our shores. Pläj didn't disappoint -- the meatballs may not be quite as good as Mom's, but it's doubtful that your mormor (grandmother) would ever have come up with a dish like Pläj's delicious white asparagus with fennel confit and lobster mushrooms. This would be a great place to go before the opera, symphony, or an event at the Herbst Theatre, as it's only a block away. Good cocktails too.
