A word from P.J. Clarke's DC
K Street, the road to the White House, is also the proud home to P.J. Clarke’s—the storied American Saloon with a history that dates back to the late 1800s. The original P.J. Clarke’s in Manhattan has stood beneath rows of skyscrapers for nearly 130 years, collecting famous and infamous regulars. Appreciated for the convivial ambiance and classic fare, P.J. Clarke’s is the quintessential American Saloon. In our nation’s capitol, the story continues as oak and mosaic floors, red leather banquets and walls lined with eccentric portraits and nostalgic photos contribute to a reassuring familiarity that is classic P.J.s, but also construe a distinct Washington sensibility. Seasoned bartenders make favorite classic cocktails the right way; dexterous shuckers ply the freshest shellfish at a marble topped Raw Bar; and the old-school, convivial dining room welcomes government A-listers, students and their families and visitors to our capitol.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The best Hostess!!! Again and again she surpasses herself in welcoming us warmly and trying to accommodate us.. The whole staff, in general, are very friendly, polite and helpful. Great restaurant."

  • "I was referred to this place by a friend and I found it to be OK. Food was OK, drinks were OK, service was friendly. I was a bit disappointed but on our way out the manager found out we were residents of Georgetown for years and introduced us to the secret hidden private dining room downstairs called "sidecar" . It was pretty nice and apparently is a private dining option for residents of DC only.. We were given applications to fill out to join. I will defintely be going back to try out Sidecar in the near future. On paper it looks like a great concept."

  • "The food and service were good, but the atmosphere was a lot more casual than I was expecting. They also have too many tables crammed into small spaces."

  • "Loud room, but you can converse. Very busy and lot's of activity so a tedious business meal seems much less so. Food is not the main event! Small portions. A very tiny hamburger for $17! However it was very nicely cooked and tasty. Desserts were the bomb. Overall I'd say it was food prep somewhat better than what I'd call pub food, with prices well above pub prices."

  • "The food has taken the backseat, I am afraid. Very little shrimp in the shrimp salad. Bland short-rib rolls. Deviled eggs with no devil."

  • "They changed the menu - don't know why. The crab dip - which used to be awesome - is now served a different way and was north of $16! My buffalo chicken sandwich was prepared differently and had the Buffalo sauce on the side - which was just odd."

  • "Have too often by-passed PJ Clarke's as just another pub -- not so! Finally landed here for dinner with friends and a great evening with GREAT food and friendly, fantastic service. I've been back and will continue to keep coming back (again and again)."

  • "Dined on snowy St. Patrick's Day. Had the special corn beef and cabbage. It was excellent. Very lean and very tasty. Will come back soon to try the regular menu."

  • "PJ Clarke's has an interesting menu with well prepared, flavorful dishes. The by the bottle wine list is also very good. Our server was excellent."

  • "My party was seated, as requested, at a quiet table downstairs. The service was efficient and unobtrusive."

  • "Our party of 4 met at the restaurant for dinner on a Sat night. As expected, it got a little noisy later in the evening but we were still able to talk without shouting. We liked the casual dining atmosphere and the large menu with lots of options. The special was a Butchers Cut, which was a good bargain, and those who had it enjoyed it. One in the group ordered the Chicken Pot Pie, which he had there before and liked it. A quick taste did not rank it as out of this world, but the serving portion was generous, nicely presented, and certainly acceptable. The highlight of the meal however was not the food, but our drinks before dinner from the specialty bar menu. The Manhattan and the Old-Fashioned were excellent and packed a punch."

  • "Went for Restaurant Week. It's near hotels, so there were lots of families, but that didn't take away from the sophisticated feel. The menu is diverse, so it can please any palate."

  • "I like the physical layout of the place. The bar has its own space that feels like a bar without overshadowing the dining room. Our server (I think his name was Israel) was PHENOMENAL. Great personality, great knowledge of the food, great energy, overall, the server every owner wants to have delivering his product. We tried the chicken with argula, shrimp and grits, and crab cakes. All tasted great and the presentation was superb. We thought the portions could have been larger, but none of us left hungry. Also, the crab cake sandwich did not already come with a side, which was disappointing. We also sampled a few cocktails that were good, but not worth the $15 each. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant, but be careful of the cost."

  • "Usually Valentines day is a challenge, but PJ Clarkes provided us with great service and really good food, a notch above the standard pub fare, although that is available also. We recommend the shrimp and grits and the pan sautéed salmon. Good winelist also."

  • "Went for brunch, seems to be new for the restaurant cause it was awesome food but not packed, French Toast a little overdone but still tasted great. I have to admit this place has the Best Cheese Grits ever, don't tell my grandmother."

  • "We dropped in after "Peter and the Starchatcher" at the Kennedy Center and despite being seted between a very noisy party and the bar were able to converse comfortably. She started with the Parmesan Tater Tots and got the Pork Chop Special. I had the Deviled Eggs and the Weekly Special Hanger Steak Au Poivre. My entree could have used a bit more black peppercorns, but like her pork chop was very tasty. We were impressed by the Special Cocktails. She got a Kelly and I had a Bloody Standard followed by a Sister Mary Walks Funny. The waiter was friendly and attentive. We are sure return after some other theater outing."

  • "P.J. Clarke's is a great place to meet for a business lunch. The menu is good. The service is excellent. The restaurant isn't quite, but you can still carry on a conversation without having to raise your voice. I'd recommend it and will return."

  • "We had a lovely brunch. The staff was very exceptionally nice and the food was good. Will definitely keep it on the short list. It's also a nice neutral turf location in case people start experience battle of the neighborhoods/commutes and on weekends street parking isn't much of a problem."

  • "Fresh-picked lobster roll gave Hank's a run for their money. On the flip side, the cocktails were ambitiously priced and tiny and the main flo0r had an odd mash-up Clydes of Georgetown/NY Checkered table cloth joint/ trying to be a downtown power spot vibe. Maybe just the vagaries of a cold winter week night, or may be next time we should head for the basement, either way I'll be back for the lobster roll and the good service."

  • "At lunch the desire to turn tables is palpable. The waiter has the check before you swallow your last bite. The helpers grab your plate unless your fork is in your hand hint do not put down your silverware when you chew. Busboys stacked our plates and changed the tablecloth before we got our coats on. There's no place to check coats making it awkward to maneuver while the table is cleared The food is just ok. The Cobb salad has great bacon but deli type chicken. you won't see blue cheese unless you ask for it... The eggs Benedict is good but since we ordered the tater tots to share it would have been nice if the waiter had said that the eggs came with home fries and offered to substitute something else. The staff doesn't have much finesse."

  • "This was our second time visiting PJ Clarke's and we left even happier than the first time! We had two friends in from out of town and they both truly enjoyed the personalized service and great food. The drink list has old school favorites like a Manhattan, but you can get a perfectly poured Guinness as well (we tried both). Our dinners were amazing. Try the filet, it is the best I have ever had and I have traveled all over the world. Whether stopping in for a lunch, a drink, or dinner with friends, PJ Clarke's is the DC destination."

  • "This is a great spot to eat after visiting the National Christmas Tree...or the White House / Ellipse area. It is a few blocks north on K Street an easy walk from at least two Metro stops. I had the skirt steak special and my date had the chopped steak and soldiers. Both were excellent - usually we agree on who has the better entree and this time we couldn't decide. We also tried the tater tot starter..also good and served with a tasty, tangy, spicy marinara-style dipping sauce. Our server was the 'right' amount of attentive and informed us that the steaks the restaurant serves come from the same cattle ranch in PA as supplies the White House. The decorations were festive and we decided to stay and watch the games showing at the bar."

  • "That was the choice. Had a reservation on a hot july evening with a friend I hadn't seen in a few years. The inside was way to noisy. So we took the outside heat and humidity and ended up having a good time. The food was outstanding!"

  • "First visit @ midnight since hotel room service was no longer available. Great crab dip/French au jus sandwich! Since it was late, & I was by myself, I asked the man at the counter to watch me go down the block to my hotel, to ensure I got back safely. He didn't hesitate, walked out into the cold December air & watched me get back safely. Exceeded expectations! Next evening we had dinner; rack of lamb which my husband thought was delicious; shrimp/grits was my choice - Israel was our fabulous waiter. We went back on Sunday for the brunch where I got a HUGE bowl of fresh strawberries/blueberries/raspberries/ blackberries/granola/Greek yogurt - outstanding & huge portion! Superb! Highly recommend for delicious food and exceptional service."
