Diner Reviews
  • "Takes atleast 50 mins to get a pizza after ordering. service is aweful and the pizzas have way too much oil on top"

  • "My only complaint is that the salad was overdressed. The dressing was lemon-based and just too tart. The pizza was fabulous, especially the dough."

  • "Decent Pizza, crust heavy on edges. Not generous with toppings. Overpriced."

  • "We keep returning for the great pizza but be prepared for long waits. The kitchen cannot seem to time the food too well, but no on ever complains once it finally arrives."

  • "We've been here 5 times over the past 6 months and it's always great. Grownups and kids love the food and the service is super friendly and attentive. Best gourmet pizza in town."

  • "Will start by saying the food was among the best Italian I've ever had, to include a trip to Italy. Service was very nice, but a little slow. Biggest disappointment was the wine list, which was rather small, overpriced, and didn't have anything particularly good or unique. Cocktails were amazing, but I rarely go to an Italian restaurant looking for a crazy new gin or bourbon drink."

  • "Ate at the restaurant 2 weeks ago and had been raving about it almost daily. Everything we had was delicious and even though the place was packed the food came out swiftly and our waitress was fun and attentive. Fast forward to our recent visit. Understanding the "freshness" model and the rotating menu we were disappointed to find that they were out of things as simple as a salad. Next the service was super slow and our waiter was almost non-existent- the assistant/helper did more than the waiter. Finally the restaurant was not packed yet our food took a long time to come out. It was basically the opposite of our visit 2 weeks prior. Big let down. Food quality of course was excellent."

  • "WE came there for our 31st wedding anniversary lunch. We enjoyed our wine, but the lack of shading was inconvenient. We shared the 3 lettuce salad and had a pizza. I should have requested light sauce -- but more importantly, it was too "tomato-ee". My son-in-law is from Italy and the flavor of that sauce was too much puree flavor rather than the simply flavor or a fresh tomato -- but Americans like this type. For me, I like the Italian way -- now the proscuitto was very good and the arugula was fresh and vibrant. I guess I thought it would "wow" me but overall I was not WOWed. But we will try again. It's not the worst place at all. But I was left a little short. Would have liked the shade to be better is all."

  • "Atmosphere in courtyard was fantastic. Great time sitting outside. Food was incredible, extremely overpriced and not kid friendly. If you like incredible, small portions and expensive this is your place. No kids menu."

  • "Enjoyed our meal. Pizza was great. Would definitely return when in San Diego."

  • "I'm very fond of the original Mozza in LA. Was in SD for a meting and thought I'd give this location a try. Service was sharp but down-to-earth. Pizza was very good, but the crust had a slightly different character (maybe not quite as crispy on the outside). Good overall experience."

  • "We had been to the Newport Beach Mozza a few months ago and loved it. This one was busier, more chaotic, both salads we had were too salty, the chopped salad was so salty for me I couldn't eat it, arugula was tolerable. Mushroom pizza excellent, crust excellent, mozzerella pizza so-so and for $20.00, not at all worth it. Would I go back? maybe, in a group, with people who just had to go there. Would I recommend it? not really"

  • "Simple menu perfectly executed Mushroom pizza best of 5 types tried, but fennel sausage is exquisite. Leave room for the butterscotch with sea-salt & caramel"

  • "Went a couple times during a week in San Diego. First time with co-workers, second time by myself and sat at the bar. As a group we shared some absolutely delicious small plates and a pizza (oddly enough with pineapple and Jalapeno). The server made excellent recommendations and steered us in the right direction. With a glass of crisp Pinot Grigio and a beautiful late afternoon sun/shade, we felt like we could be in Italy."

  • "I was expecting a pizza experience out of this work, based on Nancy's and Mario's reputations. Unfortunately, pizza crust was soggy, could not tell the $10 difference between regular and buffalo mozzarella, small plates were so tiny they weren't shareable. Servers failed to clear app plates/silverware, and service was spotty."

  • "Enjoyed a nice evening here on Father's Day. Service was attentive and thorough. Specialty drinks weren't that great. Sangria was very good. Pizza was very good, although next time I would choose a pizza without meat. It tends to get a little soggy. Salad was very fresh. One of us chose the quail entree, which arrived undercooked. Staff made it right. Butterscotch budino for dessert was excellent. Price was steep for the evening, but we already expected that."

  • "Had a group of seven for a casual get together and we were seated immediately (got reservations ahead of time). We were in the private dining room off to the side. Our server was incredibly helpful, also very accommodating, he repeated the specials to each side of the table happily because of the noise. He also made some great recommendations in regards to our food and alcohol choices. The Funghi Misti pizza was amazing, and no meal is complete without the Butterscotch Budino."

  • "Pizzeria Mozza is a hot spot in the new Headquarters downtown. It has a prime vantage point over looking the courtyard, which is very charming and great character. The service was great, attentive, made suggestions and made us feel welcome. The food overall seemed basic, unimaginative and expensive. The prices weren't extremely expensive, it just seems what you get for the money should have been a larger portion. Or if you are going to do smaller plates, drop the price. It wasn't a bad experience, but not one I'm planning to repeat any time soon."

  • "Lunch with family, great service. Food was very good but too much salt. Was drinking water afterwards for hours. Menu was interesting but not as creative as I was expecting. Would definitely give it a try if you are looking for a casual meal out."

  • "I had anticipated going to Pizzeria Mozza since I heard of the first Mozza in LA years ago. So maybe I set myself up for disappointment, but from the time we walked in, not much went well. We sat outside, where wafts of a horrible smell that seems indigenous to this part of town came over at regular intervals. We were waiting for a couple to join us so we ordered the squash blossoms, which they were "out of" at 6:30 on Friday night! It went downhill from there. . We overall probably ordered 10-12 things that evening, so we had a strong sampling. After watching Joe Bastianich on TV, I did not expect almost every dish to be salted to the stone age. The final straw was the pizza, which was simply unremarkable at best. "

  • "The food was really good. Service was great. The only hiccup was that the server's assistant spilled my wife's drink on her. Not a big deal, accidents happen. Overall, a great meal. We'll be back when we visit San Diego again."

  • "Table of six ordered 7 pizzas and they were all delicious. My personal favorite was the pizza with bacon, goat cheese and scallions. So good! The service was very slow, but the staff was nice. Loved the crust too! Some thin pizzas don't get cooked through all the way and the middle can be wet/soggy, but not this thin pizza. Will definitely come back again."

  • "We have been to Pizzeria Mozza a couple of times now and both experiences have been excellent. It's an upscale casual restaurant that is nice for both couples and families. The quality of the food on both visits has been really great with a wide variety of options and tastes. The cocktails, beer, and wine choices are varied and high quality. The service on both occasions has been great with our server providing recommendations that worked really well together and provided a wonderful set of varied tastes. We'll be back on a regular basis!"

  • "Pizzza was good but the restaurant is rather skimpy with the toppings. Meatball appetizer was flavorful but meatballs were very small. Glad I tried it but it is over-priced for what one gets and it's doubtful that I will return."

  • "Mozza continues to please, when it comes to well-made piazza with interesting toppings. I'm sad that the Cali-Belgique beer has dropped off the menu, however."

  • "I have wanted to try Mozza since I heard Mario was opening a restaurant in San Diego. Picked my 50th birthday to try it. Everything was wonderful, save one thing….The hostess, and waiter were both informed it was my birthday… and basically ignored it. I wasn't expecting anything free…nothing with a candle in it…but I thought there might be a little fuss. The Nancy's chopped salad was incredible ( especially the salami)! Sausage and Leak Pizza was perfection! Crispy crust, nice flavor and the sausage was divine ( not too salty as sausage can be sometimes) But the best part of the night…the short ribs! Some of the best ever and the coleslaw too… We were so full that dessert was left for next time. We'll be back!"

  • "The quality of the pizza was average at best. If your looking for Neopolitan pizza, this is not your restaurant. There are other pizza restaurants in San Diego with much better pizza, for a much better value."

  • "Mozza has a good local beer selection, and very good pizza. Some of the appetizers are not a good value (e.g., the octopus, which is tiny for the cost); however, the pizza and salads are worth the cost, and I enjoy having them in my neighborhood."

  • "Excellent pizza. Certainly the best I've had in San Diego. The antipasti and bruschetta are unusual and outstanding. The only thing that might have made it better would be if Mario Batalli were there."

  • "Holy cow were we surprised. The starters, they call them something else were so incredible that we didn't really eat much of our delicious pizza. The carrots with cumin, the farro with cucumber, tomato, feta, and the perfect citrus balance, OMG the burrata with the perfectly grilled asparagus, sautéed almonds, I'm drooling it was so good. Can't wait to go back. Can't believe we have this level of food in San Diego and in the up and coming development THE HEADQUARTERS. This is going to be a great area."

  • "I have been there several times. This time it was awful. The wait staff had a very bad attitude. We had to repeatedly ask to have our wine refilled. There was no silverware on the table and they brought the salad and threw it down without ever even noticing the lack. The pizza was not fully cooked. In general it was a bad experience."

  • "My husband and I had been here previously and had a pleasant experience. We returned for my birthday dinner and invited my family to celebrate with us. Our service was so terrible it's nearly unbelievable - I left my own birthday dinner heart broken and embarrassed that I had chosen Pizzeria Mozza for my birthday dinner. Our food didn't come out in any sort of timely manner, our waitress neglected us for the majority of the night, and by the time they remembered to bring my birthday gelato - all I wanted was the check we'd already been waiting far too long for. When the birthday gelato arrived at the table - they didn't even know who it was for. His words were "For the birthday boy? Or girl?". So much for feeling special on your birthday. "

  • "We used to drive all the way to Mozza in Newport Beach for good pizza. Now that Mozza has opened in the beautiful historic Headquarters building, we can enjoy their delicious food much closer to home. Their pizza have a beautiful thin crust, just the right amount of crunchiness and chewiness, not exactly Neapolitan style, but close. The toppings vary from authentic to innovative using local ingredients, and interesting combinations. Appetizers: Salami, speck and prosciutto are of outstanding quality. Salads are perfect and other appetizers have not disappoint. Interesting wine list, with good choices by the glass. Seating outside on a warm day is my preference. Only negative: bad espresso which is surprising for an Italian restaurant."

  • "Highs: The service was excellent. The chopped salad was very good. The meatballs were extraordinary. The sauce on the Napolitana was wonderful. Great beer selection. Lows: Overpriced. The Napolitana was limp and soggy. The Prosciutto di Parma pizza was just ok but certainly not worth $20 for a 10 inch pizza. Overall, worth a trip just to try it but wouldn't bother going back."

  • "Food was good, not great. Buona Forchetta makes more authentic Italian pizza. Tables way too close to each other; dining room small and claustrophobic. Not going to rush back for another meal. Also, parking too expensive (valet $15/weekends and self park still $9 with validation)."

  • "We learned on a recent trip that San Diego has taken over as the pizza capital of the US so we attempted to try some of the recommended pizza places, including this one. We started with the arugula salad which, while competent, was way too much for two people. Worse than that, it needed more olive oil and less vinegar. We were therefore naturally worried about the pizza we ordered. We need not have been - it was delicious! It was made with organic tomatoes, among other things, and everything about it was first rate and tasty, especially the crust. There was a screw up on our bill, but it was quickly solved, and that can occur anywhere. We would definitely go back for the pizza and be a little bit more careful on the salad."

  • "Pizza with anchovies, crispy capers, burrata & tomato sauce, was outstanding. An asparagus appetizer that will make you want to eat your vegetables, and perfectly delicious arrancini. Attentive, not pushy, service. Our server allowed us to relax and enjoy our cocktails and dinner. Plus, it was a nice treat to sit at the counter and watch the staff prepare the pizza's."

  • "We were 4 people and we hit the menu in a varied way. I ordered the baby kale salad - I keep thinking about it! Delicious. Friends had the octopus and the tricolore salad - all good. The pizza is just the way I like it - thin but not absent crust. I ordered the finocchiona pizza and it was perfect for me. Everyone else at the table enjoyed theirs as well. The bartender was a great help with a beer choice for one of us and gave us further insight into the food menu as well. We shared a dessert - caramel coppetta. Rich but worth it, especially as we shared. We were on a 12 day road trip down the coast of California and this meal is in my top 3 for the whole trip."
