A word from Pizzeria da Nella
Deep dish is as authentically Chicago as Lake Shore Drive traffic, but in the past few years, Neapolitan-style pizza has given it a run for its money. A big reason for its popularity is the pies at Spacca Napoli, a Ravenswood restaurant that opened in 2006 with pies by Nella Grassano, a Naples native who started baking in her family's pizzeria when she was just 12 years old.
After leaving Spacca Napoli in 2007, Grassano reappeared briefly at Nella Pizzeria Napoletana before that restaurant closed. Now, Grassano is back (hopefully for good this time) at her own Lincoln Park restaurant, Pizzeria da Nella Cucina Napoletana.

  • "We love this place, the margarita pizza is our absolute favorite. However, the restaurant has turned into a family only place, so having a quiet dinner out with my husband is impossible. There are children throughout the restaurant, some behaved, some not. We have come later in the evening, and its still filled with kids. It used to be a very quiet place, so its disappointing that we can't enjoy a quieter dinner like we used to. However, it probably won't stop us because we love love love the food."

  • "Nella may have taught them how to do it at Spacca Napoli, but today Spacca Napoli would never serve such a soggy pizza. And the mixed seafood grill was not worth anything near the $40 they charged for it. Nice $39 bottle of Primitivo, though."

  • "The place is very open and has beautiful scenes of Italy hanging on their walls. The wait staff is very friendly and the selection of pizza is very good, they make 10" Napolitian pizza in a wood burning oven, comes out delicious. I have never been to their outside patio in the summer but I am sure it is fabulous."

  • "My boyfriend and I decided to give Pizzeria da Nella a try after reading a glowing review in the Chicago Reader. We shared the prosciutto de rucola pizza and it was delicious! The crust was the right combination of chewy and crunchy and the toppings of several slices of prosciutto and a huge mound of fresh arugula on a white sauce was perfect! I'll definitely go again."

  • "We had a party of eight which is hard to accommodate especially on Valentine's but they were unfazed. All of us ordered food at different times (4 kids) but nobody seemed the slightest annoyed although there was no open seat in the restaurant. We order a multitude of dishes and ALL were outstanding. Pizza is to die for and the best risotto ever. Just like the food I had in Italy!!!Well, maybe not the desert...although my picky teen loved the nutella pizza. Great food, great Italian wine, good atmosphere . We'll be back for sure. I've been telling friends left and right to check it out..."

  • "I went here with a group of friends for pizza and wine over the weekend. The food was delicious and the ingredients all tasted really fresh! The wine list was impressive. The only thing that I did not like was that we felt rushed by our server. He cleared our plates and brought us the check without even asking if we would've liked some dessert. I would go back, but request someone else."

  • "This place serves delicious food with no fuss, and despite the name, it doesn't just serve great pizza but also all kinds of authentic Italian full of flavor and fresh ingredients. Of course, the pizzas are the star of the show and feature the blistery yet chewy Neapolitan crust that the owner is famous for. The service is warm and friendly without being intrusive, and the restaurant is in a quiet neighborhood, very easy to find parking. Hope more people give this place a try."

  • "I made a reservation for 7pm, my friends arrived before I did, were told by the hostess that the reservation had been made for 6:30 and that we would have to leave by 8. When I arrived, I confronted the hostess, showed her my email confirming the 7pm reservation, and asked if it was true that they planned to kick us out at 8. She superficially and patronizingly apologized and said she would "do her best." It was both rude and inappropriate. We are in our mid-twenties, and my two friends who arrived before I did and so claimed the reservation, each have foreign accents. I believe that they were the victims of both ageism and xenophobia, not to mention poor customer service. I was very disappointed by the way we were treated."

  • "We ordered 2 Italian beers. One was super delicious. I think it was called Colessi. We also offer the lobster avocado appetizer special which was fresh and light and tasty. Also ordered the arugula salad which was perfectly simple & awesome. The pizza was PHENOMENAL!! The crust was so light and fluffy and perfect. The sauce is to die for. This will.definitely be a regular thin crust pizza joint for me."

  • "Top notch pizzas; i will go back despite the distance from my usual stomping grounds. Entrees were average to very good. A very unusual beer menu featuring craft Italian beers was a highlight; possibly unique in the city. Salads were very good; some appetizers were a bit off. Go for the pizza."

  • "We went with some long time friends of ours that we had not seen in a while. Our waiter was charming and the service was very attentive without being intrusive. We had a lot of catching up to do and we never felt pressured to order our meals. We started with two enormous antipasto plates - one seafood the other with italian sausages and such. Both were very well prepared and presented. The wine list is really fun. Many italian wines from near Naples, mostly Lachryma di Christy but reasonably priced and the rosso we had was perfect with the antipasto and pizza. Pizzas were delicious. We had thin crust with interesting combinations of toppings. After the 2 antipasto plates, 2 pizzas were plenty for the 6 of us. Reasonably priced too."

  • "It was a beautiful night so we decided to sit outside. The ambiance was nice -- trees, flowers, decent tables & chairs. We both had pizzas: a margherita and a bufalina. We preferred the fior de latte mozz of the margherita than the bufalina. They were good but not as awesome as verace pizza napoletana at other local restaurants. We tried the sparkling house red: fruity, slightly sweet and delicious."
