Diner Reviews
  • "This place used to be great. and a neighborhood gem but the food has significantly declined in the past year. Probably will not be back."

  • "Super fresh seafood, tasty roasted chicken - will be eating here again"

  • "While the restaurant is attractive and the food very good and reasonably priced, don't go here unless you are prepared to shout at your dining companions in order to be partially heard."

  • "I love the overall ambiance of this place. The interior decor of walls and ceiling are quite unique and charming. The main dining room downstairs is very spacious. Owing to its large size and high ceilings, you won't feel like you are sitting below ground level. I was pretty happy with the food in general. The ceviche sampler was an excellent choice. Although the staff is fairly friendly in general, a slight improvement in the attentiveness would be a good."

  • "The food was very very good and the service equally matched. The wait staff was very knowledgeable about the menu. The only challenge we had was trying to have a conversation while competing with the noise.... it was a little to loud, I will be back though!"

  • "The food at pio pip was excellent. I love the chicken of course with the green sauce. And the lomo saltado was great. the sangria is not bad. The biggest disappointment was the food rush. We barely had a chance to sample the soup when the rest of the food came. And that included the ceviche which was supposed to be an appetizer. It just seemed like a rush job. Who eats like that anywhere? It was very stressful for me. Next time I will order one thing at a time since the restaurant cannot manage it themselves."

  • "Well the chicken was moist and had a nice flavor, but when I think that I paid $38 for Chicken and bad French Fries with Hot Dogs, I will not return. It felt like a fast food restaurant and there are too many other great restaurants in the area. Marie"

  • "We all loved this place. Great variety of foods, all nicely prepared and presented. It will be THE place we go to in the future when the theater is nearby."

  • "I come here when I want to impress a friend with a local hot spot, or when I want a good ceviche. The food is consistently good and the portions are filling. The decor is trendy and welcoming. Be sure to make reservations in advance on weekends! Also, it can get a little noisy. Other than that, great spot for friends or dates."

  • "We were seated next to the front door on a cold night and the maitre De was not accommodating. I ate with my coat on. The food was okay. It was a poor experience. I wouldn't go back."

  • "Mamá Juanita's chicken is to die for! Great to share as a group and you can't go wrong with the fried yuca! The tuna cebiche was also amazing!"
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "Food was, as always amazing. Fresh everything. We had their chicken, with all the fixings and was amazing. Calamari was cooked to perfection, and ceviche was delicious. Service however needs to improve- I get it, you need to turn tables as soon as possible but have some respect for your customers. They kept on picking-up the dishes before we were even done, at first we thought it was a mistake but it happened 3-4 times. Your food can be amazing but service plays a big part on the experience."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Reservations were pointless as we were forced to wait 15-20 minutes"
    Dined on 3/5/2014
  • "As a group of 8, we frequently run into problems with a rushed dinner before the theater. Not at Pio Pio! We had a leisurely dinner with great food and service and made our curtain with no problem/."

  • "I have never had a bad meal here! The best chicken in town!!"

  • "simple but interesting decor, nice service, but food rather average"

  • "The food is always great here..I attended with my family and we had chicken, beans, rice, salad, sweet plantains and fries.. The food is always good the only quarrel i have is every time i attend my rice and beans are cold. The noise level was to a minimum because it was not packed but at 5:30 they dimmed the lights and turned the music up loudly. The waitress kept disappearing and i had to wait for her over and over. Other than that i tipped well and i returned to Brooklyn where we spread love!"

  • "The food is simply fantastic! Great service and great food! Win! Win!"

  • "Sitting in the main room of the dining area felt like being in a large arbor at night. Walls were painted black and covered by sticks beautifully woven together. Food and service were excellent. We never felt rushed or pressured in any way. There were only two in our party, but very large parties were all around us. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals, but also kept our eyes on the dishes being brought to the diners around us. Presentation was impressive on all dishes - from vegetables to meats. We were texting recommendations to our friends even as we ate. If you are attending a tradeshow at Javits - it's even more convenient! Make reservations and you'll be pleasantly surprised - especially if you are adventurous about trying new cuisines."

  • "Exceptional ceviches. Great ambiance. Really pleasant service."

  • "We ordered a pitcher of sangria. Everything was fine until one of my friends noticed paper in his glass (the paper that covers the straws, but there was no one straw at our table). We told the waiter and he took the glass of sangria without replacing it or nothing. The night went on and like 40 min later we noticed another paper inside the glass of another friend."

  • "Celebrate my birthday there with my friends. Love everything."

  • "Good authentic food and friendly atmosphere. A bit noisy, but pleasant atmosphere. Our waiter disappeared on break after the appetizers, which was strange. Manager then took over after a bit of a delay and the rest of the meal was good. Overall, a nice reminder of past trips to Peru, especially the Pisco Punch."

  • "the tables in the downstairs area are placed too close together, it is difficult for people to move around comfortable, our waiter was hopeless kept dropping stuff and kept flirting with my boyfriend, maybe you should hire more professional staff"

  • "It is a beautifullly decorated restaurant and our overall experience was quite pleasant. The service was excellent: friendly, attentive and very efficient. The food was mostly OK. We ordered Tuna ceviche(Nikkei) with avocado and it was really good. For main course we had: roasted chicken - was fine but nothing out of this world, fried plantains and fried yucca were quite dry and mediocre, rice and beans were again just OK; shrimp and rice (Camarones Cuzco) had nice sause but was missing a kick. Desert: flan and tres leches were devine. We had some sangria and even though it was a bit too sweet for my taste it was still quite good."

  • "The staff was very attentive, the food was amazing (the chicken is literally the best I've ever had in the US) and the service was very quick. The portions are huge and I would go back to this restaurant in a heart beat!"

  • "It's always a pleasure to come back to this Pio Pio. I brought colleagues here from out of town and they loved it."

  • "Outstanding chicken, fair prices and delicious sangria...how can you go wrong ?"
    Dined on 12/4/2013
  • "Food is just o.k....great chicken but he rest rather boring and tepid. The cavernous place is simply not an attractive place to be, and the noise level is impossible. By the time we left, I had virtually no voice. Full of party-goes from New Jersey--yikes."
    Dined on 1/16/2014
  • "I've been to a couple of the other locations (Jackson Heights and UES) but this was my first time at Hells Kitchen. The restaurant is so much larger than you'd think and beautifully decorated. Food was just as I expected and we all left with very full bellies and leftovers. I will definitely return!"

  • "We had a long wait but then again, our entire party was not on time. The food was fabulous. Two days later and I am still remembering the goodness. The bartender could use a refresher on customer service when it comes to paying the tab - we were all waiting at the bar and as soon as he set a drink down, he demanded his money as if we were going to go anywhere. We probably would have ordered more drinks but he was so rash that we just ended with one drink after the "She owes me 12$" line - I have never been to a bar where they demand payment in such a rude manner."

  • "We love this restaurant's food. The chicken is amazing and juicy; the ceviche is fresh and spicy; and their yucca fries are something to write home about. But somehow they don't pay attention to service. The hostesses are rude, with no sense of hospitality. If they're on the phone, you wait, without so much as a recognition you're there. Reservations are causally lost, and waiting times are just imaginary. When you do get to a table, 10 minutes is the customary wait before your waiter arrives. Drinks take 15 minutes to arrive, minimum. If you have an hour and a half for lunch or two hours for dinner, then this is your place. Because the food is so good, we still go on occasion, but always end up annoyed, wondering why we keep coming back."

  • "Our party of three came on a quiet Sunday afternoon for a pre-theatre meal. The Matador Combo together with a stuffed pepper and a side of fried yucca was more than enough food for our group. The chicken was hearty and delicious and the stuffed pepper was yummy mix of meat and grain and veg. Very, very good. I'm a lover of tostones, and they are well done here (not at all greasy!) with a delicious lime/garlic dipping sauce. We had the flan for dessert. Their flan is much closer to cheesecake in texture and depth than what you may expect. Very nicely done. One diner had the red sangria. A bit sweet, but easy going down. The bill for three with a generous tip: $110. I will return."

  • "I would say the food was really good. Nothing super fancy but tasty."
    Dined on 1/4/2014
  • "We had two appetizer samplers for lunch. Was ample food for the two of us. The "worst" sample was merely very good. Most were exquisite. The Ceviche was truly outstanding. Great flavors without being overwhelming or too hot. We will be back."

  • "Very good place with excellent atmosphere. All meals were outstanding. We had the chicken and seafood and it was all delicious."
    Dined on 12/29/2013
  • "The wait was quite long (about an hour after our original OpenTable reservation) - but I guess understandable since we had a fairly large group. The decor is chic - dark and loungy-like, which does feel a bit weird considering the cuisine. The food doesn't disappoint - it is standard Pio Pio which does chicken well."

  • "I love everything about this restaurant. The food was delicious (and it was a great portion!) and the service was fantastic. Seriously. I stayed here for quite a while and I'm surprised they didn't kick us out... The interior design of this place is also great. I will definitely come back."

  • "We were visiting the City for a play at the Signature Theater and so chose this because it was close and sounded good. It took a while to spot it (very subtle signage), but we were exceptionally pleased with everything -- the friendly, prompt service, the outstanding food, the price and the decor. I suspect it gets loud when it is hopping, but it was not too crowded on a Saturday at lunch time. We are still talking about the delicious food. Yes, put the green sauce on everything, but only if you like your food a bit spicy-hot!"
