A word from Ping Pong Dim Sum - Dupont
Washingtonians know their routine wouldn’t be complete without a jaunt to Dupont. Just steps from the circle, our second US outpost has as much energy as the neighborhood. Choose between indoor or outdoor dining, sit back, and enjoy!

Ping Pong restaurant is a modern take on a very ancient Chinese tradition - the Tea House. Hundreds of years ago, merchants on the Silk Road would stop at tea houses enroute to rest their weary feet, relax and drink tea with their fellow travelers and share Dim Sum - baskets and dishes of little sweet and savory snacks, usually steamed, baked or fried. Ping Pong may be a Twenty-First Century Tea House, but we’ve kept all the best bits of that ancient tradition, like meeting to relax and share appetizing food and fragrant tea. We just thought that after the first thousand years or so it would be OK to add cocktails to the menu.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Everything is exceptionally tasty!! We really enjoyed everything"

  • "Four of us dined on a Friday night. The food was outstanding, but it was so noisy it was very hard for us to hear each other over the table and also hard for us to hear the wait staff."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "I love dim sim and thought this would be a fun experience. Instead - it was a huge disappointment. Food came only warm (not hot), needed hot sauce jut to give it some taste and the calamari had to be returned as it was not edible (rubber would have been more tender). I would suggest that you stick to the real dim sim restarts with actual chinese chefs in the kitchen."

  • "We did not enjoy our brunch. It was not particularly child friendly either. The food was pricy, the portions small and the flavors not vibrant enough to make you ever go back. Honest but true. Go elsewhere in Dupont."

  • "Our team really enjoyed Ping Pong. Great for everyone!"

  • "Great food, you can pick what you want to bring out for the all-you-can eat but we let our server bring us things/portions he suggested which was a way better way to do it!"

  • "Food was great. Interesting Drink menu. However, despite a reservation, AND a relatively empty restaurant on a Saturday Night, they sat us by an outside door, near a waiter station. Next to a large loud party. We were only a party of two. I could not have picked a worse seat in the house. I should have asked for a change but wasn't in the mood to fuss. The waiter did explain all the dishes which was a nice touch. I am not a fan of the tag team style of wait service, it always seems disjointed for me. Too bad, as the location and décor are nice. They need to up their service, professional wait staff game."

  • "...I was leading a group of parents and students to DC and wanted to celebrate the parents for coming. I made a large reservation at the restaurant and was I embarrassed. Half the dishes were never brought to the table; half the guests got only one dish that they ordered. The service staff ignored us for at least half the time we were there. The bill was $450 for 11 people, which is not bad but pretty outrageous given how poor the service and actual followup was. I will never, never, never recommend this restaurant again."

  • "I just love Ping Pong. I don't know how traditional the dim sum is, but it tastes amazing. And it's just a fun place to have dinner with a group or just another person. Also make sure to get mochi for dessert. It's delicious!"

  • "When I googled the restaurant the reviews were terrible. I told the other couple in our party about the reviews, but we all elected to go anyway. When we arrived we were greeted and we were shown to our table. We ordered the DimSum brunch, but did not go for the bottomless drinks. Those around us that did the drinks looked like they got their fill. The food was as good as we remembered. It was hot, cooked to perfection and totally fresh. Our server helped us through the menu and suggested several items. He was the best we have had anywhere. To summarize: Go you will be pleasantly surprised and pleased. The vegetarian menu is varied and one of the best I have seen."

  • "Ping Pong Dim Sum is so delicious, but the package deals lead you to pay a little bit too much and not finish your food. Also their brunch mimosa deal should be included in the package deal - having is separate is just a little too much money. They are located in a pricey area so you cannot blame them for having highish prices, but a part of me longs for a more authentic dim sum experience where they roll carts of options around and you get to pick as you go, rather than picking 5 from a list with no idea what they are. Amazingly yummy, slightly too expensive for what you are getting."

  • "PingPong was a great location for early dinner/happy hour with work folks. The service was great, the server kept bringing out food. It was a great time, great ambiance, great service!"

  • "We had a large group enjoy a solid and fun meal at Ping-Pong - I enjoyed the variety of options and the cool drinks. My only slightly negative comment is that the server was not that welcoming and rather gruff, like we were bothering him or something. Smiling and acting pleasant can go a long way to helping customers have a good experience."

  • "Drinks were not made correctly, only one-half of our food ever made it to the table, and the what did make it to the table was sub-par at best. This was the second time we tried Ping Pong Dim Sum in DC and both attempts were complete failures."

  • "I have been a frequent diner at PP (mostly 7th St.) I made a reservation for 2 for Friday evening. I was shown a high table in the bar area. I expressed my disappointment with being seated there as the chairs there are not as comfortable in my opinion. I was told that I'd have to wait a half hour to be seated elsewhere. I felt the hostess was very patronizing and rude. Our waiter was friendly but was too busy to bring soy sauce, clear our plates and take our check. I like the PP fare a lot and will go only to the Chinatown location from now on."

  • "This is one of my favorite places for dim sum. I am lucky that it's also in my neighborhood. A great surprise. I love the Galleria Place location but now I think I like the DuPont location just as well. Great waiter -- Bryan, Great bartender that I adore - Josie and love Chris the manager too. Man, he shakes a mean martini. Love it and will continue to visit this place."

  • "I live right down the street from Ping Pomg Dim Sum and have been eager to try. So this weekend when I had a bunch of my girlfriends in town, I thought this would be the perfect place- it always seems so lively! The dim sum and cocktail options were perfect for our group and everything was very reasonably priced. The noise level was a little loud- so I don't think it would be a great date night spot- but for our purposes it was fine. The service was SUPER slow after we got the food- we had to ask the waiter for our check after 45 minutes because it seemed like he was actively avoiding eye contact with our table. Our waiter also gave us a little attitude when we each ordered only 2 dim sum dishes instead of the recommended 3-4 plates."

  • "Nothing groundbreaking here that I tried, but everything was delicious and better than expected. Any reasonable person could find a few things they like on the menu. The place has a cool modern feel and great location. It would be perfect for a birthday party or maybe taking out a group of visitors in the city. I'd go here again."

  • "Very trendy space and wonderfully designed interior. The decor really fits with the food well. The food was delicious. There was a slight delay in one of my date's dishes coming out, but once we asked, it was out in a heartbeat. Given the price, I'd go for a somewhat special occasion. Not terribly expensive, but not within a frequent stop budget."

  • "The food was decent. The explanation of the food was not. The waiter was very short with us and scoffed at me when I asked a simple question to clarify what items on the plate were what. Sorry if I don't eat your food all the time, but I also can't eat your shellfish, so relax and help me out, dude. After our main course came (we did restaurant week), the server forgot we existed. I had to get up to get my own refill on water as nobody would stop by our table to help us. That was beyond disappointing, especially since the manager watched me walk over to the water station and did nothing by stand by and watch."

  • "Ping Pong is a great option for brunch (bottomless mimosas with lychee, mango and passion fruit juice options) and the food is delicious - can't go wrong with unlimited dim sum for $35.00 per person. There are a ton of options for vegetarians! The service, however, was less than desirable. We were left waiting on multiple occasions (at one point for more than 20 minutes) without water or a mimosa refill. Someone in my group ordered tea when we first sat down, and he didn't receive it until half way through the meal. We ended up leaving early because our server, Edwin, didn't place a portion of our order. When we asked him about it, he acted like we never placed them in the first place!"

  • "We really enjoyed the dim sum - but the main course was good to fair."

  • "Three of us had brunch at Ping Pong during their Restaurant Week promotion. For $20 the menu included 8 dim sum pieces and a small plate (tapa sized) plus a salad and a mochi ice cream dessert. I thought most of the dim sum were good; the honey roasted chicken puff, spring roll and spicy chicken dumpling were very good. They must have been out of one of the items on the RW menu because we received a beef dumpling instead of the advertised garlic shrimp dumpling. I don't eat beef, so I wish they had mentioned the substitution and given me a chance to ask for something else. But, given i couldn't eat it all anyway, that's a small quibble. Cocktails are inventive and in the $12-$15 range."

  • "waiters are slow here at dupont circle and in Chinatown. It was restaurant week but the restaurant had no indication on special menu. When asked about the special menu, waiter gave us 1 and said he didn't know how to process that menu but will figure it out. He was suppose to bring more copies of it but never did.Obe dish cane out way after the rest of the food were eaten. When asked about it, different waitor brought it and it was cold. I wouldn't go here except my teen daughter likes it.The food is good. Why don't they just walk around with trays like Chinese restaurants do? They shouldn't call themselves 'dim sum'. What's the point if you have to wait so long. The point is to see the food and pick. Go to real place for dim sum!"

  • "My friend and I dined at Ping Pong Dim Sum for Restaurant Week 2014. The select menu offered a nice overview of what they're capable of. With four courses of dim sum, it was as if we were at an Asian tapas restaurant. It's a modern take on the cuisine; there were a few spices that surprised me (pleasantly). The decor is modern, not bright, so it would probably work nice for a date. Toward the end of our dinner (7:30) it was a bit noisome, but I attribute that to a private event in the bar area. The service was good, especially since the manager was highly visible and involved. I'll go back."

  • "We were excited to try Ping Pong's unlimited Dim Sum and Champagne for NYE and we were not disappointed! We had a lot of fun picking out what we wanted to try. Staff was super personable and friendly. My only complaint was that we were sat near the entrance, so we were greeted with a gust of cold wind each time the door opened, but after our 1st bottle of Champagne, we didn't really notice. Also, just to point out that anything that was fried in egg roll form was a bit dry, but everything else was great. Can't wait to come back when it's warmer to sit on their patio and try some of their cocktails that looked delish. What a fun place."

  • "We did the unlimited dim sum/bottomless bubbly for NYE (came out to about $75 per person with 20% service fee & taxes and all included) and it was great! We had 2 bottles of sparkling wine between the two of us, and a ton of dumplings - yummy! We weren't rushed, and everything came out nice & hot (sometimes too hot!) Very fun option for New Year's Eve! We were too full to stick around for the 10-1am open bar but very much enjoyed our meal & drinsk!"

  • "Apparently Open Table did not communicate with Ping Pong, or Ping Pong did not communicate with Open Table. Open Table showed availability there all evening. We made a reservation for 6 people for Christmas Eve at 6:00 p.m. but when we arrived they said they were closing and we had to order everything by 6:10 p.m. or they could not accommodate us. How nice! They claimed they called me, and in fact they had called when I was unable to get to the phone-- but they never left a message and they never called back. It would have so simple to just leave a message! ("We apologize for the inconvenience but we are closing early so please arrive on time so you can order by 6:10.") How lazy and inefficient of them, and inconsiderate as well."

  • "First off our service was terrible, Especially for the place being pretty empty. Several of my friends had sent back drinks for not being correct and on top of that some drinks were served in wrong glasses! No one was bussing our table either and we were easily the biggest party there. I had been here once before for only drinks and enjoyed it but when it came to ordering our food it took well over 35 minutes to reach the table and that was only half of the order. My personal plate of food had arrived cold. Long story short I will not be giving them my business in the future."

  • "Very lousy food, overpriced, I could have gone down the road to my local dim sum house and I should have. I was extremely let down."

  • "My whole experience was average. The place was empty and there was no real ambiance. The food was okay and the service was average (neither good or bad). I think this restaurant may be a better option for happy hour than dinner. I would go back, but it would not be at the top of my list when recommending DuPont Circle restaurants."
