Diner Reviews
  • "I was disappointed to see that the menu has changed (no spicy chicken salad), the portions have shrunk, and the prices have gone up. The "big salad" I ordered with shrimp was lacking in pizazz -- no tasty bleu cheese, no veggies other than the tomatoes, lackluster dressing. And the lettuce was long and stringy -- very hard to maneuver into my mouth. My light lunch cost me $23 with tip, and I was hungry immediately afterward. I won't be returning anytime soon."

  • "Staff service was great, but not enough on duty; we had a half hour wait for drinks. Salad was SLIMY--ick."

  • "Upon arrival, we waited at the entrance for 3 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. If Pine had an eye for service, the bartender who could see us would have flagged down the maitre d. When she finally did come over, she unfortunately did not apologize. Worse yet, after we were seated our server did not come over for another 5-10 minutes, despite the place being half full. The maitre d should have filled our water glasses. Anyway, the food was exquisite for Hanover standards! I would only say that caesar salads should never be made without romaine hearts, so when I tried the "baby kale caesar," the stems were like twigs and annoying. The croutons were also cheap/bagged. The tomato & fennel soup is superb, as are all the beef dishes."

  • "Pine is a good addition to the Upper Valley but suffers from some of the common UV problems. The most glaring problem is the extremely low quality of the service. This is endemic to the area and New England more broadly, but Pine has done nothing to improve on this. There is the occasional competent staff member, but overall it's quite poor (e.g. no, 8 month pregnant women would not prefer to sit at the bar when the restaurant is empty.). The food is good by UV standards, but doesn't rise to the level of the best in the area (e.g. Simon Pearce). It is nice they've made an effort to have oysters. The cocktails are tops in the area. The wine list started out adventurous but now is a series of California chardonnay, cab, etc."

  • "The food is good but not as remarkable as they'll like you to think. Too much dressing on the salads. Over-priced entres. Even if you've made a reservation, they'll be rude seating you. "

  • "This was our 4th visit over the past few months and we have been delighted every time. The menu is not overly extensive but carefully chosen and beautifully prepared. We haven 't found comparably high quality dining anywhere in the area -- and always leave Pine smiling."

  • "Went for the first time to Pune for my 3rd year anniversary dinner. Enjoyed a purposeful menu with great ambiance and amazing company. Left smilling and even 2 days later felt better than I have for having ate there."

  • "The ambience was very pleasant and inviting. Food arrived at appropriate times. More than anything else was the fine service. It was impressive. "

  • "Whenever we visit our son at Dartmouth, we dine at Pine. The food is fabulous - the staff very service oriented and interesting and we love the ambience, rain or shine. I have loved everything I have ordered on the menu!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinners immensely. We found the service, though, to be very rushed. I don't know if the tables were overbooked, but we felt that we were being hurried through the ordering, eating, and paying processes."

  • "We had the pleasure of dining at Pine for both lunch and brunch during Dartmouth Family weekend and were absolutely thrilled with our experiences! The atmosphere was charming, busy but not overcrowded as the spacing with the tables is lovely. The service was outstanding with friendly, attentive staff. The decor and feeling of Pine makes one feel like she could be in Aspen, Colorado or at a New England Resort but without any pretentiousness. The waiting area in the hotel lobby is wonderful too, if one has to wait at all. I will go back to Pine at least once a trip while visiting my daughter in college! "

  • "We took our daughter to Pine for brunch on Sunday of First Year Family Weekend because we thought it would be a special treat for her. They were terribly understaffed. When our server did come to our table, she apologized every time for being so slow which became annoying. The hostess could have come around to pour coffee or make herself useful, instead, she stayed glued to her stand and ignored the situation. The food selections were a little odd. They were trying to be different instead of just offering good food. We won't be back for brunch again in the future."

  • "The food is superb; it's the second time we have dined there and both times superb food, excellent preparation, decent sizes (so one can have an appetizer, a main course, and dessert). Good wine list."

  • "Have been here before when service was lax, but clearly more attentive (at 6pm seating) and food was solid+. Oysters were good but at $3 apiece arguably pricey. Lamb very good. Save room for desserts. Worst service was getting the bill, but I do like to eat and run. "

  • "Despite having made a reservation weeks in advance, we were seated at a table next to a pillar that we bumped into throughout the meal. Our waiter provided the barest minimum of service. The chicken was overcooked and dry. Overall, a disappointing and over-priced meal."

  • "We loved the Pine, again. Excellent food and impecable service. What more could one ask?"

  • "This was my third visit, and service is much improved - the last 2 times there was a very long wait for the menus, the drink menus, and to order, but it seemed like some of the weird kinks have been ironed out. Great food, terrific cocktails, wonderful atmosphere, love it! A great addition to Hanover!"

  • "We had not been here since the renovation - it is a very pleasant decor and atmosphere - but took our teenage son for a nice birthday dinner and the food was just average. Kind of a ridiculously small portion of "homemade" potato chips as an appetizer - I mean, how much could that have cost them to be a little more generous?"

  • "Went to dinner at Pine on Wednesday night. Nine of us ranging in age from 80's down to our 10 year old. Menu had something for everyone - good kids options and some really nice adult items. I had the beef ribs and they were delicious. Not terribly impressed with desserts. Service was good and I like the overall appearance of the place (but why the ugly ceiling tiles?)."

  • "Matthew was our waiter and he seems to have radar for anticipating every need. Excellent service. And the spicy chicken salad was the best ever!"

  • "When Pine opened their service was "meh" according to friends. But they came into their own within a month and I have loved all my meals here. The mushroom crostini is great, and the swordfish (get it rare) is delicious. King Arthur flour bread is served with creamery butter. The dinner salads are not that great so I wouldn't recommend any of them. Salmon is ok. I'm excited to try the new sea bass addition. MUST get the chocolate pnut butter bombe!!!!"

  • "We went to the Pine for the first time for our anniversary dinner. We loved the ambiance of the restaurant. The menu was great with a very nice selection with a great deal of diverse choices. The waitress was absolutely excellent. She brought our drinks and then let us relax without pushing us to order our food. She was very pleasant and professional. We chose the salmon and swordfish dinners and they were delicious, perfectly cooked and excellently prepared with the vegetables and spices. The drinks were great, and our only suggestion would be to offer a garden salad. The 3 salad choices are all different types of greens with not much variety in them. We will definitely be returning. The food, service and atmosphere was great."

  • "I've been to Pine a few times and had good meals. I return because I like the ambiance: warm fire and views to the Hanover Green. However, my group of three was disappointed the other night. The service was incredibly slow for a relatively "unbusy" night, the menu has not changed in the year that I've been coming, and the meals were overcooked and mediocre. I hope this restaurant will think about changing things up a bit on their menu and get more experienced waitstaff because it has a lot of potential at a destination restaurant."

  • "Whether for business or pleasure this restaurant will please your palate. The environment is quiet enough for conversation; a table in the corner will create a romantic spot in this not too brightly lit restaurant. The Pine has a good wine list and a variety of food choices for almost any palate."

  • "Had a really delicious dinner with some old friends at Pine. Everything was wonderfully well prepared, and the restaurant itself is quite attractive. I can highly recommend the food at Pine."

  • "My teenage daughter and I ate at Pine over Dartmouth Carnival weekend - what a treat! I had not anticipated having a hamburger for dinner, but an acquaintance had suggested it. The Pine's burger is arguably the best I have ever had; my daughter also had it, and she concurred. She also had the gnocchi appetizer, which she thought was fantastic. The salad I had was also very good. (I did not review the wine list.) The "scenic view" is of the Green, not majestic mountains or the Connecticut River. The Pine's décor is modern but a balance is struck by the reclaimed wood paneling. I will without a doubt eat at Pine on my next visit to Hanover."

  • "This wàs our 2nd visit it 2 weeks. First was very good; second even better. OUTSTANDING oysters on the half shell (in Hanover!). Paperdelle and swordfish were winners too as was the cheese plate for dessert. Wonderful service, ambiance and reasonable prices. Delicious wines by the glass and the bartender makes outstanding cocktails. Can't find anything to complain about. Ok, for our first visit the fresh, tasty scallops would have benefitted from a bit more caramelzation and the swordfish was a tad overcooked."

  • "They remodeled the Hanover Inn and created the Pine restaurant. Unfortunately, our dinner there was below expectations. The waiter forgot to bring the rolls. The lamb was tough and too salty. Not worth the price."

  • "My husband and I were staying at the Hanover Inn, where the restaurant is located. When we arrived for our 8:30pm reservation, they tried seating us in the bar area because they didn't have a table clean. We waited for a table. The waitress was nice, not overly friendly or helpful. The food was good and fresh, but nothing special. They could improve their presentation as my plate was a mess (corn salad, steak, fries). My husband's arugula salad was greens out of a bag with a skimpy amount of goat cheese. The restaurant has Boston prices, but the food definitely doesn't warrant them. Next time we're in the area, we will try something else."

  • "I am rather picky about food and it is difficult to eat organically out....while the dishes are not necessarily made from organic food the waiter spent the time to ask about the ingredients and I was able to make a decision based on his information. The food was professionally prepared, delicious, and the atmosphere comfortable. I would like another reviewer recommend a signature vegetarian dish for those that would like to eat less meat."

  • "Just on the green in Hanover, NH, in the Hanover Inn, my friend and I were up for a dance performance next door at the Hopkins Center. Very convenient and warm and lovely restaurant. It was spacious so we had private quiet space for conversation and the food was delicious. We didn't have a huge meal ....I had one of the best, most beautiful hamburgers from locally sourced meat ever with scrumptious parmesan crusted french fries and a great Kale salad with caesar dressing. My friend had the mussels appetizer and it was a dinner size plate of 26 mussels in the most delicious sauce ever and crispy hot bread. We liked it so much that we returned after the show to get dessert and got homemade ice cream. Delicious."
