A word from Pietro's Coal Oven Pizza - Walnut Street
Pizza is a family affair for me. My Uncle Angelo arrived in America in the 1930s with a passion for pizza. He worked hard and eventually bought his own pizzeria in Brooklyn. It was there that Uncle Angelo invented a recipe for coal oven pizza. That recipe has been perfected over 60 years and passed down through the generations. My brothers and cousins in New York know the recipe. Diners at Patsy's, Nick's and Angelo's have enjoyed their pizzas, pastas and salads for years. Here in Philadelphia and New Jersey, you can feast on my Uncle Angelo's secret recipe dishes at our three Pietro's locations: 1714 Walnut Street, 121 South Street in Philadelphia and 140 W. Route 70 in New Jersey. I hope that you enjoy our classic style pizzas and pasta specialties "alla familia" for many years to come. Buon appetitoContinued

  • "pizza was okay and the pasta we ordered which was shrimp and chicken in a creamy tomato sauce, that was really good. it was a little too dark in there for an early afternoon, the lighting was not very good and i think they are a little overpriced."

  • "We always struggle to find a place where the whole family can dine out since one of our group is not very adventurous when it comes to food. Even Italian restaurants are sometimes tough, if the food is "too fancy" for his taste. This was the perfect solution for us for a pre-theatre meal; lots of variety for everyone to find something they liked. It's loud so being there early was good - the noise level was just ramping up as we were leaving. Be prepared to take leftovers; the portions are huge. One salad could feed the whole table."

  • "I like coming here because I normally share a salad a pizza with a friend. This time I tried the spicy calamari for an appetizer. It was good. The portion was just right. We tried the Greek salad with chicken which was a nice size to share."

  • "this was for a late Christmas present. The service was excellent, Rebecca was our waitress, she was wonderful, very attentive and pleasant. We had asked for a round table and accommodated us with one. The food is excellent… great selection… Caesar salad is a must. Highly recommend."

  • "Our waiter was not accommodating at all. He liked saying "no." to small requests such as "do you have ranch dressing?" Instead of saying no. He could've told us other dressings that they do have. I tried to order a pasta dish w pesto. His answer was " no." When I asked the reason he said "I don't put pesto on pasta, it's only for the pizza." I didn't realize he was the chef and the waiter. As a vegeterian, I asked if they could sub veggie broth for chicken broth. "No." He said "I can make it wo the broth but it's going to be dry." I then suggested the chef put some of the pasta water and he ignored me. When he brought the dish out he said "here's the pasta florentine a little dry" We were thouroughly disappointed."

  • "Excellent! We arrived on a cold, rainy afternoon and were greeted by an excellent team and presented with deliciously warm rolls fresh from the oven. Pizzas and eggplant parmiagiana were excellent. Service was first class. thank you."

  • "This was our favorite go to place in marlton and we were so upset when it closed for estia taverna. We were sio happy to come here in Philly and get our favorite Siciliana salad and delicious pizza. Sadly it's such a hassle to park and come into the city we will not be coming to Pietros often but good to know that the same quality food is just over the bridge!!"

  • "My sister and I went for lunch and had the mussels for appetizer and the Roma pizza. Mussels were pretty good, nothing to rave about but good. Pizza was waay too salty (we've had others and they were quite salty too) I like my food pretty heavily flavored and salted but I didn't enjoy this pizza very much. I like all the toppings individually but it needed something to cut all the salt and one-note flavor. The bread basket that we got only had wheat rolls. My sister said hey usually give both white and wheat. No big deal really but just one more thing to add to the list. I wouldn't eat there again; there are too many places in Philly and this don't someplace where I would like to waste a meal. The unsweetened tea was good."

  • "My wife and I dined in Pietro's based on reviews on OpenTable - and it was a few steps from the Hotel on a rainy night. Food was very good and plentiful. Meatball appetizer very good - pasta w/vegetables was excellent. Service was also excellent. Did not have the pizza but will do so next time. Prices are reasonable."

  • "We recently went to Pietro's on Walnut for the first time. The family enjoyed the pizza and pasta dishes. The pizzas could be a little larger for the price but overall a great spot to try in Philly. It is definitely a loud and hopping place."

  • "4 diners. 1st time at restaurant. Salads brought out. One pizza entree brought out. Reservation at7pm...8:15 still no other entrees brought out, waitress finally came over and said it looked like we enjoyed and ate a lot of food. We said no, no one cleared our salad plates and noble one entree came out. She apologized, food then recooked. One entree burnt. At that point we gave up, nothing comped to us and no manager came out. Will never return or recommend"

  • "We went there with a bunch of 9 people and I was asked for gratituity of 30%. On a bill of 100$, I gave 18, which was still not enough. Too bad."

  • "Absolutely fantastic food. My wife and I have not stopped talking about the ensalata fresca. Entrees were great as well. Nicole was our server and she was there every time we needed her. Will definitely be back the next time we visit Philadelphia."

  • "This is a solid 4 star restaurant. They have good satisfying Italian food - nothing mind blowing, and I wouldn't quite consider it fine or fancy dining, but definitely will satiate your craving for pizzas and pasta. The pizza dough is done well; the calamari is particularly fresh tasting. We also had arugula salad which did not skimp on the arugula - fantastic! The server was very friendly and gave good recommendations. Ambiance was not too loud, nice for a meal where you want to have conversation. Only gripe I had was it smelled a little odd to me. Not super offensive or anything, but just... unusual, though my husband didn't seem to notice, so it could just be me... Overall a good experience. I would return again when craving Italian."

  • "This is the best pizza in the area, hands down! Thin and crispy and full of flavor. Also came out very quickly which was great as we brought our 2 yr old out to dine with us!"

  • "We had a great time at Pietros! This was our first dining experience there and we would definitely go back! The only thing they need to work on is a more plesant wait staff!"

  • "It's a family style restaurant that also offers small portions they are still loaded. My pizza was great and my friend ate all of her ravioli which was surprising given the amount of food. The white wine was chilled and went down easy. It was very busy on the first Saturday with decent weather. We had lots of families with kids around us so it was quite noisy--dropped played, fighting, crying, falling out of chairs. So if you're looking for a quiet hangout, this is not it. The price and good quality make this a must try."

  • "I'm a fan of their pizza and we've usually had good meals there. Service was a bit off this past time, with some missed orders (though they did offer to comp our delayed pizza, which was nice). We'll still go back."

  • "We have dined at Pietro's a couple of times in the past and it has become one of the places we always choose to eat at when we visit Philadelphia. Cool part of town, great service with excellent Italian food at affordable prices. Highly recommend reservations if you plan on a meal on Friday or Saturday."

  • "Always a good experience here... It was pretty empty the night before a pending snow storm, but food was decent and service was solid. Don't park on Walnut though the night before a snow storm because it's considered an emergency snow route. Some guy at a table near us got a $90 ticket! And they tow if you don't move it by 10pm."

  • "The service was excellent, our waiter was friendly and attentive. They were able to accommodate a last minute increase in the number of people in our party without any issues. The food was what I expected from a place like this. I wouldn't class it as extraordinary, but it was good. I wasn't expecting a high-end wine list, but I did feel that the wine choices left a bit to be desired."

  • "The pizza is great and the entrees are as well. Very kid-friendly (I have a 5 year old whose favorite restaurant since age 3 has been...Pietro's - unusual, right?) Can't go wrong here or on the South St. Location"

  • "we looked for a casual place to eat on the evening of New Years Day. This restaurant was pretty basic. the hostess had no personality and I don't even think she looked up at us as she let us to a table. So much for hospitality. their pizza was a little over power ring in their spices and the calzone filling spilled out all over the plate. the beer prices were a little high but, the service was spot on even though the waiters nor the bus boys carried on any conversation. Everything was pretty basic and fair nothing to write home about."

  • "We ate here for the pizza - thin crusts, premium cheeses and different and tasty toppings ! My end of the table shared a large salad (fresh lettuces and house dressing) which was quite good and two pizzas - one with pepperoni and one with eggplant. Both of the pizzas were excellent - crispy, chewy crusts and a proper mixture of cheese and toppings. The wait staff was attentive, which was good because we were very hungry. The only downside is the noise. For us, we were a group of eight with a reservation so were seated with no waiting, it was OK because we know each other well and talking was not that important. I would not meet a friend here to "catch up". But the pizza is soooo good."

  • "The hostess seated us immediately, & our waitress was really knowledgeable of the menu, very attentive & friendly. Our drinks came right away, as did the bread basket, & we waited a very reasonable time for our food to arrive from the open kitchen at the rear. My wife ordered the Chicken Parmigiana, with a side of spaghetti. The marinara sauce was delicious, & the breading on the real chicken cutlet was perfectly crispy, not soggy like a lot of restaurants make it. I ordered one of the specials-of-the-day, Baked Ziti with Broccoli & Chicken, also delicious. When we were leaving the hostess made sure our 6:30 PM reservation via Open Table was completed. By the time we left just a few tables were empty, so I'd recommend making a reservation."

  • "we could barely understand what the waitress was saying (possibly the combination of her accent and the noise level), so we never really heard the full details of the specials."

  • "It is delightful to find a family owned, family oriented restaurant in the heart of center city. We are looking at some paintings at Freeman's and needed a place for lunch. Pietro's was close by and without knowing much about it, we booked it. The salads and the pizza were wonderful. It was a Saturday before 3 and we were able to order from the brunch menu which is a real deal. I had the Pietro's pizza and my wife and our friend Sue both had large, generous an excellent salads. The service was quite attentive. It was a bit loud but not overwhelming. We will go back."

  • "The food was great, no complaints in that area. The server seemed to a little distant at first but he ended up to be nice. There were two strange things though. One is that it was a friend's birthday and one of her gifts was a cake. They offered to cut it for us and charged $10 for it, saying that we had the option of not bringing outside food in. We were not going to eat it if they didn't offer to cut it since it was just a gift and not something we were specifically planning to eat in the restaurant. The greeter was also confused about the reservation via opentable, as if it's not something she has heard of before. The restaurant was not filled yet so she found seats for us."

  • "We were in town for the Philadelphia Marathon. The restaurant was very busy but fortunately we were able to squeeze in an early reservation for our party of 7. This was a great place for lots of delicious carbs - pasta and pizza. The pomodoro sauce on the spaghetti was outstanding and covered almost every single noodle. The large pizza seemed a little small to us but were excellent quality; and since we like extra sauce, they were able to give us lots of extra sauce to pour extra on top of our individual slices. We had two small children, ages 8 and 5, and their kid's meals were perfect. The service was great. Overall an outstanding experience."

  • "My wife came her before her first marathon in Philly back in 2009 - to carb-load of course. We came back in February this year while visiting friends at Philly craft market. We had to come back again for some delicious, fresh, piping hot pasta. Our 15mo. old son even enjoyed his time (last time he slept under the table in his carrier!) Service was excellent and the moz stuffed meatballs were out of site. My wife had, traditionally, the penne in vodka sauce and I had the paparadelli with mushrooms and sun-dried tomato. Hot pasta on a cool fall evening? Yes Please. "We'll be back" (Arnold style)"
