A word from Pietro's Coal Oven Pizza - Walnut Street
Pizza is a family affair for me. My Uncle Angelo arrived in America in the 1930s with a passion for pizza. He worked hard and eventually bought his own pizzeria in Brooklyn. It was there that Uncle Angelo invented a recipe for coal oven pizza. That recipe has been perfected over 60 years and passed down through the generations. My brothers and cousins in New York know the recipe. Diners at Patsy's, Nick's and Angelo's have enjoyed their pizzas, pastas and salads for years. Here in Philadelphia and New Jersey, you can feast on my Uncle Angelo's secret recipe dishes at our three Pietro's locations: 1714 Walnut Street, 121 South Street in Philadelphia and 140 W. Route 70 in New Jersey. I hope that you enjoy our classic style pizzas and pasta specialties "alla familia" for many years to come. Buon appetitoContinued

Diner Reviews
  • "The waiters were hard-pressed but friendly; the hostess was just hard-pressed. Food is quite good and not too pricy. Don't expect anything revelatory. The caprese salad was nicely fresh. Generalization: the chef the last time I went went overboard with salt. Generally a very solid choice, especially for lunch. Noise at dinner can approach bat cave levels."

  • "I found this spot on Open Table. I checked out the menu and saw it had fresh sorbet and I was in. I didn't make it to the sorbet as we ran out of time, so of course I'll be back. The pizza was amazingly fresh and so was the salad. The ambience was great as well. We'll definitely be back on a regular basis! I bragged about it all weekend."

  • "We had a "small salad" and a "small pizza" for dinner for the two of us. We ended up taken some pizza home and we are big eaters. Both were delicious. The food quality was excellent. We will be back."

  • "This is our go-to special occasion place for work lunches but we are going to have to find another restaurant because we can't hear each other talk over the noise level! The food is fantastic, which is why it is so crowded, but there must be something wrong with the acoustics. Go off hours or sit on the sidewalk. The occasional fire truck or wailing police siren is better than the constant din inside!"

  • "Had reservation for 4 people......at the last minute we had 2 more for a total of 6. Not a problem.. Bujar, our server was very professional....attentive without being intrusive. Food was delcious and fresh"

  • "Been here several times because it is close by, convenient & better Italian food than I make. Meal was pasta w/meatsauce about 2 hrs or less after eating, it repeated on me the entire night. Had Tums for dessert that helped a little. Did not have that dish before. Bread is warm & delish. Service quite good. Will go back, just not too soon"

  • "The outdoor dining is great if you love to people watch. The space is cramping and sidewalk very uneven but it is made up by the great food and service. And of course watching the people go by"

  • "Good pizza but the service not the best. Had to ask for water, bread and it took a long time for everything....this is the first time we didn't have good service....but we'll go back."

  • "I've eaten here several times and always have an enjoyable meal. The service is great (Laurel is the best). One of the best Italian place in Philadelphia!"

  • "The food is consistently good. The ambience is lovely and old world and the wait staff efficient. The salads are enormous, even the small ones and the thin crust pizza is just like Northern Italy. "

  • "The food, as always, was fantastic. The server was not at all attentive with drink refills and it was extremely hot and stuffy in the restaurant. "

  • "We had not been in the city with the kids in a while so thought this would be a nice easy dinner. The kids had a great time and the food was enjoyed by everyone."

  • "We arrived with a larger stroller and were asked to put it in a tiny space. Would not fit. We asked if we could put it in another location as the restaurant was fairly empty of clients. Got a nasty no and the manager forced the stroller in that tiny spot, with nasty attitude. Sorry, but that enough for me not to recommend. Not even mentioning an order mistake ... That, I know it can happen."

  • "WE had a delicious spinach salad with cheese, raisins, tomato, croutons and fabulous dressing....the bread is always hot....also had pizza which is always very good. Portions are huge.....outdoor seating is usually available. Great place to go often."

  • "If you are craving great pizza or Italian staple dishes, Pietro's won't disappoint. Because it is an extremely popular Center City eatery, I suggest a reservation, although they do a wonderful job of fitting you in without one if your group is a manageable size. If you are looking for a quiet spot to talk and eat, you'll need to go elsewhere. The acoustics of the space make conversation a bit challenging compared with some other places. The wait staff is excellent - very attentive and professional - and the prices are reasonable for a downtown gem."

  • "pizza was okay and the pasta we ordered which was shrimp and chicken in a creamy tomato sauce, that was really good. it was a little too dark in there for an early afternoon, the lighting was not very good and i think they are a little overpriced."

  • "We always struggle to find a place where the whole family can dine out since one of our group is not very adventurous when it comes to food. Even Italian restaurants are sometimes tough, if the food is "too fancy" for his taste. This was the perfect solution for us for a pre-theatre meal; lots of variety for everyone to find something they liked. It's loud so being there early was good - the noise level was just ramping up as we were leaving. Be prepared to take leftovers; the portions are huge. One salad could feed the whole table."

  • "I like coming here because I normally share a salad a pizza with a friend. This time I tried the spicy calamari for an appetizer. It was good. The portion was just right. We tried the Greek salad with chicken which was a nice size to share."

  • "this was for a late Christmas present. The service was excellent, Rebecca was our waitress, she was wonderful, very attentive and pleasant. We had asked for a round table and accommodated us with one. The food is excellent… great selection… Caesar salad is a must. Highly recommend."

  • "Our waiter was not accommodating at all. He liked saying "no." to small requests such as "do you have ranch dressing?" Instead of saying no. He could've told us other dressings that they do have. I tried to order a pasta dish w pesto. His answer was " no." When I asked the reason he said "I don't put pesto on pasta, it's only for the pizza." I didn't realize he was the chef and the waiter. As a vegeterian, I asked if they could sub veggie broth for chicken broth. "No." He said "I can make it wo the broth but it's going to be dry." I then suggested the chef put some of the pasta water and he ignored me. When he brought the dish out he said "here's the pasta florentine a little dry" We were thouroughly disappointed."

  • "This was our favorite go to place in marlton and we were so upset when it closed for estia taverna. We were sio happy to come here in Philly and get our favorite Siciliana salad and delicious pizza. Sadly it's such a hassle to park and come into the city we will not be coming to Pietros often but good to know that the same quality food is just over the bridge!!"

  • "My sister and I went for lunch and had the mussels for appetizer and the Roma pizza. Mussels were pretty good, nothing to rave about but good. Pizza was waay too salty (we've had others and they were quite salty too) I like my food pretty heavily flavored and salted but I didn't enjoy this pizza very much. I like all the toppings individually but it needed something to cut all the salt and one-note flavor. The bread basket that we got only had wheat rolls. My sister said hey usually give both white and wheat. No big deal really but just one more thing to add to the list. I wouldn't eat there again; there are too many places in Philly and this don't someplace where I would like to waste a meal. The unsweetened tea was good."

  • "My wife and I dined in Pietro's based on reviews on OpenTable - and it was a few steps from the Hotel on a rainy night. Food was very good and plentiful. Meatball appetizer very good - pasta w/vegetables was excellent. Service was also excellent. Did not have the pizza but will do so next time. Prices are reasonable."

  • "We recently went to Pietro's on Walnut for the first time. The family enjoyed the pizza and pasta dishes. The pizzas could be a little larger for the price but overall a great spot to try in Philly. It is definitely a loud and hopping place."

  • "4 diners. 1st time at restaurant. Salads brought out. One pizza entree brought out. Reservation at7pm...8:15 still no other entrees brought out, waitress finally came over and said it looked like we enjoyed and ate a lot of food. We said no, no one cleared our salad plates and noble one entree came out. She apologized, food then recooked. One entree burnt. At that point we gave up, nothing comped to us and no manager came out. Will never return or recommend"

  • "Absolutely fantastic food. My wife and I have not stopped talking about the ensalata fresca. Entrees were great as well. Nicole was our server and she was there every time we needed her. Will definitely be back the next time we visit Philadelphia."

  • "This is a solid 4 star restaurant. They have good satisfying Italian food - nothing mind blowing, and I wouldn't quite consider it fine or fancy dining, but definitely will satiate your craving for pizzas and pasta. The pizza dough is done well; the calamari is particularly fresh tasting. We also had arugula salad which did not skimp on the arugula - fantastic! The server was very friendly and gave good recommendations. Ambiance was not too loud, nice for a meal where you want to have conversation. Only gripe I had was it smelled a little odd to me. Not super offensive or anything, but just... unusual, though my husband didn't seem to notice, so it could just be me... Overall a good experience. I would return again when craving Italian."
