Diner Reviews
  • "This place was a real disappointment. Ordered two appetizers and they were bland. The sandwich I ordered consisted of wonder bread with some kind of filling in middle. Took two bites and left remainder on plate. "

  • "Love this place- great food, great ambience, etc. It is a little pricey but that is to be expected when you are on the water. We ended up having 7 people in our group so tip was included- which is fine- but should not mean that the waitress has the right to be rude/annoyed when we order more drinks. When we gave her our cards for the bil, she threw our cards down at us from across the railing once she was done. No thank you, no "here you go" just threw them down. We didnt do anything to deserve that service, especially on a nearly $500 tab."

  • "Great place with great food! The noise level was a bit high because of the band playing in the bar (it's a small restaurant). Outdoor seating (with heaters) is available too."

  • "This is the third time we have eaten at Pier 23 and every time has been great. Highly recommend Pier 23 especially for outdoor/on-the-water dining."

  • "I ordered the shrimp and crab sandwich and it had no taste at all..it just tasted like lemon. Paid $20 for a sandwich that had no taste..sad but true. My clam chowder was good and my husband fish and chips was okay. We had read such good reviews on this place but I will never go back and really wouldn't tell friends to try."

  • "I have been here 6-7 times now; everything is awesome - I have never ordered anything I didnt love, that wasnt perfectly fresh and delicious or that was a small serving. The service is also always amazing. This place is a home run."

  • "Always a good place to stop in and enjoy an afternoon near the waterfront. Can be busy crazy at times, but later in the day is good to just hang out for a while. There's one main thing to get here and that's the shrimp and crab sandwich. Other things are good, clam chowder (a little off the mark this time) and the fish 'n chips is usually a winner (please, please use fresh fish . . . this is SF). Shoulda sent the calamari back as this time it was more left overs from lunch and not a fresh fried batch at all, but still . . . ok. Fried calamari and seafood places are a good litmus test as to how much a place takes its time on the standards offered and all other times they have hit that mark. We'll give another try for sure."

  • "Prices were too high for the quality of the food. Wouldn't go back for the food but probably for a beer before or after a ball game."

  • "A great find in fresh delicious seafood and drinks. Service was excellent, friendly and fast. The crab and shrimp sandwich was beyond our expectations. Salads fresh, light and perfectly dressed. Sitting on the patio with the ocean breeze was delightful."

  • "this place had amazing calamari and shrimp and crab sandwich, the bread melted in your mouth everything was just a wonderful experience. Would go back again and try something different off the menu. The prices were little high but worth the cost for the quality of food you get."

  • "We were in San Francisco and were looking for a good and casual restaurant. I remember hearing about Pier 23 Cafe on the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives show. It was wonderful. The food was delicious and the service was very nice. We ate outside which allowed us to have a beautiful ocean view. It was great using OpenTable because we were able to book a last minute reservations. There were a number of people waiting outside and we were able to walk right in."

  • "Great food and great people! A must see place for anyone visiting San Francisco! That was my first time visiting this beautiful city, and Pier 23 made it all worth while!"

  • "We had a group of 9 who were gathering from around the country before a memorial service the next day. The view was great for the travelers, the food was varied for all the dietary requirements, and the service was attentive but not overbearing. Always a great choice."

  • "We had a great time at pier 23. The food was good and the service was fast and friendly. We enjoyed the live band."

  • "Pier 23 is awesome if you like a beautiful view of San Francisco Bay, far enough away from touristy and noisy Pier 39, but close enough to walk to. We arrived there around 4:00 and a live Latin Jazz band was playing in the bar. They started in the afternoon so you didn't have to wait for the 9 or 10 o'clock start time that music usually starts in a bar. The fresh shrimp and crab salad was delicious. I had it with sour dough bread and a yummy CA Chardonnay ."

  • "We saw this place on 'Diners, Drive ins, and Dives'. We live in Oakland and have passed this place while in SF. Enjoyed sitting outdoors while eating a great meal. The fish and chips light, flaky and delicious. Also had the cheese plate as an appetizer, "great", also. We will definitely put this restaurant on our list."

  • "It's the best spot- love sitting on their back water-view area. I try to go there as much as possible unless they're PACKED which they are on the weekends for sure."

  • "I love this place. I has just the right amount of funk combined with great food and very nice owners and staff. I love the fact that they play jazz all day over the house speakers - straight ahead jazz. Very relaxed, no pretension. Also, don't miss the nude babes' butts above the bar."

  • "One of the best meals we’ve had in SF. Outside dining available right next to the water, friendly service staff (Kelly) and atmosphere, great food! The clams/mussels pasta was outstanding & maybe the best I have ever eaten! Dish was overflowing with mussels (at least 12+) with linguine pasta, plus plenty of sourdough to soak up the tasty wine sauce. Outstanding!! All washed down with glasses of Lagunitas. A tad pricey but good was the roasted whole crab (fresh in season). Lots of prep work to get every bite out of the shell but very delicious. We’ve eaten in many SF restaurants, high end to local dives, but this place is in the top three. Definitely will return sooner than later."

  • "I had some friends visiting from out of town and wanted to go somewhere where we could get good food and drinks with a view. This was perfect! We arrived early to find our table ready, right in the water! Great service, yummy food with large portions, drinks hit the spot! Had a wonderful time catching up with friends in this hidden jem! Highly recommend!"

  • "Our service was great, the setting beautiful, but the food was not good; disappointing because there are so many great food spots in SF, and this place was well liked on yelp and other sites"

  • "Came here for Happy Hour on Friday after work and as always, Pier 23 was great! Sadly they don't have an official HH menu or pricing, but you really can't argue with buckets of beer and the super tasty bean dip & chips. Come when it's sunny, and sit on the patio!"

  • "We had a 1pm reservation, arrived at 12:45pm and checked in with the greeter(s). We waited until 1:30pm, out of courtesy due to the high volume of people, to ask the greeter(s) if our table was close to being ready, to which they replied "who are you?" and then told us that they didn't check us in after all. So rushed us outside to a table that had not been cleaned or set and left us with two menus. We were brought water, ordered our food and drinks and asked for silverware...funny thing is, our food came out before our silverware. So basically we just spent most or our time WAITING at this place."

  • "The calamari was excellent. The crab & shrimp sandwich along with the fish and chips were nothing to write home about. The sandwich lacked flavour. The fish and chips were ok but again the fish lacking taste."

  • "Having seen Diners, Dives and Drive ins I was expecting a lot from Pier 23 and it didn't disappoint! The food was perfectly cooked, staff were friendly and attentive despite being very busy! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting The Bay area!"

  • "Made a reservation with Open Table, and was immediately seated without any issues. Requested a nice spot in the Patio Area, and got it with no hassle or wait. It was a beautiful sunny SF day, and the view of the Bay was awesome. Staff was friendly and hospitable. Casual environment. Servers knew their food. Everything made for a great experience. Food was amazingly fresh and awesome. Great menu choices for lunch. Everything was so good, I have little to say! Would definitely go back and make it a go-to spot. Seems to get busy (especially in the patio on nice days), so advance reservations are a good way to make sure you do not have to wait too long."

  • "This place looks like a very authentic older restaurant - not fancy and no pretensions at all here. Had a nice little table outside in the sunshine with a clear view of Alcatraz. We had an excellent Crab & Shrimp sandwich and Fish Tacos. The server warned us the Crab & Shrimp sandwich was big enough to split, and he was right. Great little spot."

  • "Not a lot of options in this neighborhood. This is the best so far. Clams and Mussels are great. Burgers are yummy. Fish and Chips were just good (really greasy). I will go back and try others soon."

  • "Pier 23 is such a surprise. You expect bar food & not much else. However, the service & food is excellent. On a clear day, it is the perfect spot to go to. The entire dining space has a beautiful view. Best spot is to sit on the outdoor patio. We always have a very good time. Highly recommend the cafe to friends."

  • "Met some friends for a later dinner with our two teenagers. We sat outside under the warm heat lamps at a long, wooden table. Our waitress came promptly to greet us and gave us water and some tasty bread for the table. We ordered appetizers immediately to feed the hungry teenagers and the food was a big hit. Our son loved the quesadilla appetizer so much that he ordered it again for dinner. The fish tacos were also a big hit. The Ahi tostada could have had more Ahi in it but it was tasty. The steamed mussel/clam dinner was a filling portion with delicious broth and the hummus and toasted bread could have been ordered for a round two as well! Would have loved to stay for the live reggae band! Can't wait to go back!!!"
