Diner Reviews
  • "Crispy duck confit; lamb belly with smoked eggplant puree; seared halibut with the moistness of a black cod! This is heightened and superb cuisine in a casual and comfortable gem of a place -- with no pretense, no formalities. The focus is on perfectly executed dishes. The flavors are multi-layered and multi-cultural punctuations on a strong classical base. Extraordinary value. Really. And everyone on staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. I only say it's a nbhd gem because, although at the edge of Gastown, you know it's not really "neighborhood-like" but it is THE GEM within that district. And the District itself will always (fear not) be diverse."

  • "We all ordered the prix fixe Chef''s Sampler for $55 and it did not disappoint. Start with an oyster shooter and work your way through plates of halibut, mushrooms, lamb and duck (I forgot 1 or 2) until you're presented with two yummy desserts. Our server was very helpful with a an unfamiliar but great wine list. We'll be back."

  • "One delicious delight to another. Terrific flavours, well paced delivery of dishes and good cocktails. Great spot with friends or a small group to enjoy the fun of sharing and tasting lots of dishes."

  • "Went on a Thursday night, staff is friendly & efficient. Tasting menu started off with an oyster shot that actually showcased the oyster's flavor. Smoked almonds are amazing, but maybe out of place? Dan dan rutabaga salad was decent in flavour but "noodles" were a stretch. The fried chicken wings and pork belly bowl were the real highlights! Wings were crispy while chicken stayed moist and tender, full of flavour & sauce was awesome too. Pork belly bowl was well balanced, although the pear could be more pickled - I didn't really get the kimchi part. Also had a decent halibut dish with velvety, smoky, umami dashi cauliflower puree. The banana dessert was surprisingly delicious. Overall great value, concept, and execution."

  • "Went to Pidgin for the first time with a few friends and we loved it there! The food was amazing, very flavorful and fresh. I highly recommend the lamb belly and beef brisket. The restaurant was busy, but our server was attentive and friendly. Great place, will definitely come back to try the rest of the menu!"

  • "I had heard so much greatness about Pidgin so I thought for a special occasion I would take my wife there. PROS Reservations through Open Table were an ease The host was great Unique decor and feel IMPROVEMENTS Customer service by far. I waited a good 13 minutes for a drink order Customer service again, when food came, they described it well but getting checked on or getting any type of eye contact was very poor Food was okay, for a 5 star restaurant I had greater expectations Portions were small its not that I wouldn't recommend, there is just so many more choices that I'd rather spend my $100+ at. If friends wanted to try, I would go and give a second chance and perhaps even with my wife but we were both very disappointed"

  • "Food was good and good value for the money but I didn't like being rushed. At one point, we had three serving plates on the table at the same time. Why couldn't they bring them out one at a time? It would have been far nicer. Also, a pretty noisy, clattery space."

  • "My friend and I chose the prix fixe menu: overall the ingredients were sublime but I got lost in a little bit of the chef's vision, all the while knowing it's French Japanese influence. Fois gras, duck and squab (main proteins) were delicious and perfectly cooked, table pickles unique, raw scallops light and true to their flavor, service spot on. I will give Pidgin a try again, maybe without the prix fixe."

  • "Liked:The food was excellent. Ambiance is great. Great cocktail selection. Didn't like (minor stuff): Wine was served in a pop bottle with top cut off, reminder of the desolation outside. Felt that servers were a bit too casual in dress and attitude for the ambiance and prices. Heads up: They don't serve tea or coffee. They assume everything is for sharing and bring out one dish at a time, if you want to get entrees at the same time, tell them. The area outside is not pleasant, it was very uncomfortable to walk to the restaurant in the dark. Cab would be best if going for a date."

  • "I have never left a review online before for a restaurant but was so impressed by the food/service and atmosphere of Pidgin that I had to share with others. My wife and I snacked on a few appetizers and small plates and each one of them was spectacular. The service was also fantastic and we will definitely be regulars."

  • "I went with an out-of-town girlfriend for dinner, and Pidgin served up an original, delicious meal. The tune and veal were pretty great. Don't miss the pork belly! Great service. Really knowledgeable (all male, hunky) staff."

  • "Tapas style dining suited our group of 4. We made our reservation for a Monday night that offered a $1 corkage fee. What an amazing deal! We each had a special (very tasty) cocktail, shared 8 dishes, our own bottle of wine and the bill for all 4 of us was what we usually pay per couple. Unfortunately, we didn't leave room for desert. We will definitely be back and experience some different dishes and try the opera cake. All the staff were knowledgable and friendly and the food was served with perfect timing. The best restaurant - ambience, food, service - we have been to in a long time.."

  • "First time at this restaurant. Really enjoyed it. Frankly part of the attraction to the venue was the controversy that it generated at its opening. Seems to be fitting in now..."

  • "The restaurant is awesome, only to be surpassed by their servers. Its like apart from being trained in service, they are trained in the psychology of how to make you feel special and loved :P"

  • "Had the $50 prix fixe and everything was a delight. Creative plates---watch what the kitchen does with "crunchy" where you least expect it!---and generous portions, reasonable wine list, warm and extremely competent service. No sour notes in the whole experience, from reservation to bill. Fantastic to see restaurants of this quality beginning to appear in Vancouver!"

  • "Thrilled I chose this place for my friend's belated birthday dinner. We got the $40 prix fixe tasting and it was delicious. Drinks were beautifully crafted and inventive. We had meringue and passion fruit curd for dessert which was a perfect way to end the meal. I have to mention the service because it was friendly, genuine and knowledgeable. Every person who served us was awesome and not at all pretentious. Definitely would come back here to try my own selection from the menu or even the $55 prix fixe."

  • "If you are looking for a place with a fab drink menu, this is the one! With excellent service and Asian inspired fusion dishes. I thought it was a great experience and would definitely come back. One thing though, it the dishes took quite a while - this resto is not meant for a quick bite, and the food was a tad salty. Otherwise, A+."

  • "The food is eclectic, interesting and above all outstanding. The food is served tapas style. Great sake and cocktail menu as well. The service is exceptional. The restaurant was very busy and lively - not quiet. Fantastic Friday evening. Will definitely go back."

  • "Outstanding cocktails. Food was a pleasant surprise. Great foodie spot. Thought the flavours would be unique but they were great. Tasting menu is a great experience."

  • "Hands down the best food I have eaten in Vancouver. The squab was our least favourite of the 6 dishes our group tried - a little too heavy on the pickling - but it was still an above-average dish. The grilled octopus, pork belly bowl, gnocchi and duck wings were standouts. Dishes are tapas-sized so great for sharing. All 3 of the desserts were terrific, especially the meringue. The "zero proof" drink options were a nice touch. Our new favourite spot in town."

  • "Pidgin serves its meals in the "sharing plates" style. We had some hits and a couple of misses but overall very nice preparation and presentation with some interesting flavour combinations. Not so sure about the style of serving broken pop and beer bottles with 300 ml servings of wine in them. Avoid their feature wine "Joie" -- really terrible, but there were other choices. The waiter presented each dish with the usual meticulous listing of every single thing in the food, but did a good job and was very pleasant."

  • "I may visit more often if the location is not that close to china-town. Parking on the street is dark and cold in winter, when walking to the restaurant (about 50 meters), one homeless asked for spare and one drxg dealer offer special thing."

  • "korean plus french plus japanese? gnocchi with radishes? I think yes. i'm a bit of a noob on the whole dining thing so i may be biased to enjoy everything i shovel into my mouth, but my more refined dining partner was just as if not more impressed. five stars for me! i have no opinion on the gentrification debate, i think what the owner is doing is admirable. I don't live around there, so who am i to say? the food is excellent, however, and i thoroughly enjoyed my evening. the opera cake especially impressed me. def. a reccomendation."

  • "Servers needed polishing.....our server didn't seem like a fit for the restaurant, he made a couple innapropriate jokes right off the bat bwfore even feeling us out...His wine knowlegde was sub-par but the food was amazing humpback shrimp toast rocked our worlds and the duck three ways was so flavorful ( visually it was a little monocramatic in colour) and ...all in all I will be back for sure"

  • "Among the newer and more modern restaurants the city, this is the best for me. I tried a few while visiting, and from my perspective as a San Francisco resident, this is the best tasting and most fun of the trendier places in Vancouver."

  • "We had a great experience at Pidgin. The service was impeccable - from the host, the bartender and our waiter, everyone was on top of things at every moment. The restaurant itself is beautiful and stylish. The food was very good overall. Our favorites were the mushrooms and roast peppers. We also had the crab cake special, which was similar to a fish stick - we liked that the least. Also had the pork belly rice bowl, which was very delicious, just not super inventive (tasted like your usual Korean rice bowl). Our waiter was very engaging, had great suggestions and was fun to chat with. Despite a couple of blah dishes, we would absolutely come back. This is a great spot for a great night out."

  • "Great service and knowledgeable staff. At first we thought the fusion between french, korean and Japanese would be quite odd, but it certainly did work. The mushroom dish was awesome as was the oyster shots."

  • "The restaurant suffers a little due to the hype and controversy surrounding it. The room is cozy and we'll appointed though avoid the table immediately beside the only coat rack due to frequent visitors crowding your space. The prix fixe, while a pleasant mix of their popular items, relies too heavily in cold, pre made items. Dishes were mostly tasty but some felt a little pedestrian. Cocktails are fantastic but if desert is your thing you'll be disappointed by having only one option available. Wine recommended by the waiter was a sub par BC syrah. Overall an enjoyable meal but not quite as memorable an experience as others had suggested it would be."

  • "This was my first time at Pidgin. I wanted to test the buzz about the place. The buzz is well deserved. We tried the 8 course tasting menu. If you are adventurous and you appreciate cheekiness and a high quality ingredients prepared with a rule-breaking attitude, then Pidgin should be on your list. Examples? Oyster shots, squid with biscotti, and half duck served roasted / confit with carrot cake purée (yes you read that correctly) were some of the creative and tasty dishes we enjoyed. The raw scallops were divine and the mushrooms / pea pods provided the perfect fool to other heavier dishes. Negronis were intense and flavourful. I will be back for more."

  • "Pidgin exceeded our desire for outstanding food and drinks! The bourbon and/or gin negroni are definitely worth a try, we loved the addition of coffee ice cubes! We ordered the $55.00/p tasting menu which was way too much food for half the table, but thankfully the other half had no problems polishing off what two of us couldn't finish. The servings are Tapas style plates for sharing, so if you order from the menu, they suggest 4-6 plates should satisfy anyone's hunger needs. The duck was spectacular as well as the mushroom dish. Our server was knowledgeable but could have been a bit friendlier....we had a corner booth table at the back of the restaurant which had a great view of the whole restaurant. Overall a foodie's heaven!"

  • "From perfect plating to the amazing balance of flavours in each dish... I can't say enough about this perfect restaurant. The decor is simple yet stylish and functional... and this is how I would describe their menu. Everything on the plate has purpose but is also beautifully simple and complex in flavour at the same time. The cocktails are beyond expectations and rival the food for attention. Particular high notes: the duck... oh the duck, the raw scallops, the oyster shot, and literally all the cocktails.. van horne, chosun fizz, the perfect globe ice cubes for their great scotch collection... I went for the first time on Feb 12 and I already cancelled my Valentine's reservations elsewhere and I'm going to try to sit at their bar."
