Diner Reviews
  • "stuffy and a triffle uselessly snobbish service:while I was eating my dessert,I saw the waiter serve and brag about a very specil cheese tothe table next to us.Although we had finished the meal and the check brought to us,the waiter s comments on the cheese had raised my curiosity. So about 3 minutes later I politely asked the waiter to let me sample a scraping of the cheese. He had us wiat for a while, and came back saying he could not because they had "put the cheese away in the fridge"...Cheap,or nonchalant, but not at all at the level of what they claim they are.Better go to BOULUD next door who dont think they re that smart."

  • "Personalized the menu and provided a nice anniversary desert"

  • "An elegant French dining experience -- the food is delicious and beautifully presented. We had the lamb and the duck rillettes, which were perfectly cooked but very rich. The wine list is incredibly expensive -- we had trouble finding a wine for less than $150! The waiter was intrusive and joined into our conversation. Better to dine there for a celebratory meal instead of pre-theater -- hard to sit through a performance after eating very rich food. The waitstaff is very aware of timing before theater."

  • "After 6 courses of tasting we went back ton our hotel and ordered room service. We enjoyed 30% of we were served. The service was simply phenomenal."

  • "Mediocre food at lavish prices. Living off its reputation."

  • "Husband and I went to celebrate our birthdays. Food was outstanding. My skate wing was delicious as was my husband's suckling pig. Service was wonderful."

  • "I found the food excellent, service warm but unobtrusive, noise level delightfully low, but the interior is dreary. I hope the management will realize that it's time for an update. Don't let that one criticism stop you from trying this restaurant!"

  • "If you would like to feel like you are dining at a fine epicurean restaurant in Paris without the cost of airfare and hotel, Picholine is my choice. From the amuse bouche (Saturday night it was a cauliflower soup and a savory financiere) to the stunning entrees (my wife had escolar, I had the rib-eye) to New York's best cheese course, the food is peerless, the service is attentive and warm (never stuffy) and the wine list is grandiose. There is not a bad table in the entire room."

  • "Again Picholine was outstanding in every way, perfect really, even on a Sunday evening, when most fine dining restaurants are closed, and those that are open often do not provide the same top quality experience as during the week. Highly recommended for first class, top quality fine dining."

  • "Great food and service. Very attentive regarding dairy intolerance."

  • "My husband and I had a delicious pre-theatre dinner at Picholine. We enjoyed everything about the experience except for our waiter interrupting our conversation to chat us up about literature (who doesn't love Henry James) and then explaining his sideline as an artist, complete with proffering his business card and advice on how to contact him. Not cool."

  • "Had a lovely Anniversary dinner at Picholine that had wonderful amuse bouches, entrees and all orchestrated by an excellent captain, Marie. She was pleasant and made very good recommendations."

  • "From a warm welcome at the door by the maitre d' to the complimentary confections after dessert, Picholine is a superb restaurant at the highest levels of quality. The cuisine is imaginative but not pretentious, fresh ingredients perfectly prepared, promptly served and beautifully presented. The warm olive amuse bouche was unusual and delicious, so delicious that, when I complimented the server for it, my guest and I received more of the same. The varieties of bread are fresh, moist and flavorful, perhaps the best I've encountered in any New York restaurant. The sommelier was knowledgeable and courteous in serving the bottle of rare wine I brought with me. The servers were attentive but not intrusive, bringing each course quickly."

  • "Lets start by saying that we appreciate fine dining, with only a slight attention to price for special occasions. We went to this restaurant because of its proximity to the Metropolitan Opera. The $98 prix fix seemed inviting so we all, four of us, selected it. The pate (rillette) was dry and void of flavor. The main course of scallops (3) was accompanied by "apples" that came out as 5-6 julienne stripes of raw apple accompanied by several dime sized "puffs" of some sort which were virtually flavorless. All of the dishes were well presented . The last course was a cheese board that was very nice. The wine was decent at $120 a bottle but the waiter kept pushing to open a second bottle. We all agreed that we would probably not go back."

  • "Picholine offers the best food and the most gracious service on the Upper West Side. The staff are enormously helpful, but not pushy; they're accommodating, but not servile; they anticipate your needs without hovering; they do not interrupt punchlines (a vice that has recently become endemic in trendy restaurants all over town). There now are more good chefs turning out good food on the UWS than ever before, but Picholine is the only UWS restaurant that is truly first rate. It's the only Fine Dining experience north of Per Se. What comes out of Terrance Brennan's kitchen is extraordinary. One of the greatest restaurants in Manhattan, which is to say, in the world."

  • "Every course was a medly of expertly crafted sensory explosions. The cheese tray is, in my opinion, the way to end the meal. I was in heaven! A must visit when in New York."

  • "This restaurant is lovely, elegant without being stuffy....and expensive. It's great location near lincoln center is an added plus."

  • "While the food is very good, there is a good deal to be desired as to the size of the portions. Even if you do not order the tasting menu the portions are small. You need to fill up on bread. The wine pairings provided by the restaurant to accompany food do not allow any choice. In general, they are mediocre, although acceptable. The service on a Friday night was annoyingly slow. The fundamental problem with this restaurant is that what they deliver is not up to the prices they charge. They need either to increase quality (quantity) or reduce prices. Notably, on a Friday night there were many tables empty. The cheese selection, however, is excellent."

  • "I had never tried Picholine before. Our party of 3 was blown away by the excellent food and service. It is a welcome surprise to be greeted by an amuse bouche especially a delicious cauliflower soup with a touch of curry oil and an interesting coconut panna cotta. Our appetizers and entrees were all extremely good. We enjoyed our selections from the prix fixe menu and will definitely return in the future."

  • "I have eaten at Picholine numerous times over the past 15-20 years. It is one of the finest restaurants in New York!!! Every dish is amazing and the cheese selection is the finest anywhere. Wonderful food and wonderful service in a lovely restaurant!"

  • "Daughter 20th birthday celebration with Dad & tasting menu for two! Up from Princeton & College Freshman dining. Three hour 12 course experience will remember forever! Especially remarkable cheese course, three each or six shared, of cheeses will never find in a supermarket or I suspect any other NYC restaurant! Marvelous memories memorialized!"

  • "it is a tradition to celebrate my daughters birthday at picholine, as usual they didn't disappoint from a personalized menu to the risotto w black truffles thru the ribeye to their amazing cheese table all was first class the friendly sommelier recommended a 03 larose which was still a little tannic but great and a Riesling based desert wine, great pricey and worth it in a town that prides itself on overpriced hoo ha bravo"

  • "We make it a point to dine at Picholine when we go to the opera. It is always a special occasion and fondly remembered for years. There are many delicious vegetarian options and this is greatly appreciated."

  • "definitely will go back again ! The service was very good and the food was outstanding ! The only downside is that the risotto was over salted. Other than that, I would put this restaurant into my top 10."

  • "Fine dining as it was 30 years ago, and I say that only as a complement. Every dish was superb, as was the service."

  • "I would put this restaurant on a par with the best of NY. Professional, attentive service. Fabulous amuse bouche (sp), amazing risotto, but the best was the rib eye steak. Perfectly cooked, melted in your mouth. Cheeses the best I have tasted, served with attention and love. We're going back as soon as possible! Definitely a special occasion restaurant."

  • "Each time I have dinner at Picholine I am reminded of just how magical this restaurant is. Everything is perfect each time. The wait staff is professional and attentive; the menu is creative and unusual; and the overall experience is thoroughly enjoyable."

  • "The main dishes came salted and one of them had to return. Another downside of the restaurant was the long delay in the coming of starters and main courses. The chef should be on holiday"

  • "My wife and I were in New York for my 60th birthday last October and had dinner at Picholine to celebrate the event with our daughters. We love good food and have appreciated remarkable meals in many places in our travels. Picholine did not disappoint. We had memorable evening, fantastic food, great service, and left feeling that we were the ones who were appreciated. Thank you Picholine."

  • "What's so great about Picholine besides the outstanding food and service is that they strive to deliver what so many of the new trendy places fail to achieve or comprehend -- an all around fine dining experience. Picholine has fresh, wonderfully prepared, properly proportioned and beautifully presented dishes in an environment that many would call plain, but our group of diners find to be understated elegance where you can enjoy the food as well as the conversation without having to shout across the table to be heard. Excellent wine and cheese selection. Very attentive but not rushed or pretentious service. In short -- a wonderful fine dining experience."

  • "Picholine is clearly a subdued, superb and pricey restaurant from the moment you walk in. The food is clever and creative and while, for my palate, there were hits and misses (wine with my suckling pig was not a happy pairing for me, the amuse bouche cream of cauliflower soup with curry was divine), it is an exceptional experience. Special kudos to a maitre d'hotel who graciously found us a table even though I had made my reservation on the wrong day(!). They can do anything you want but beware the up-charges to prix fixe; $300 morphed to $500 w/tip!"

  • "It is impossible to complain about the food served at Picholene. I had the risotto and skate - delicious! That being said, i forgot that the restaurant had converted to prix fixe only. It is $98/person for three courses and while the food is delicious, if you have a couple of glasses of wine - it is closer to $200/person. The restaurant was very quiet so little to no buzz, found the atmosphere very bland. My mom and i have been going semi regularly for years and we left thinking no reason to return, as while service and food were great - just too expensive for what it is."
    Dined on 3/5/2014
  • "Excellent food and service but very overpriced and tiny portions."
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "From the first moment one enters Picholene through the lovely prix fixe dining experience, one is treated with such grace and humor and care that the event is in every way memorable! Keep up the good work!"

  • "I often dine in the area of Lincoln Center, and this is hands-down the most delicious meal that I have ever had. The staff was highly attentive and the food was unique and flavorful."

  • "They serve only menu course. I don't like to eat three food course"

  • "Beautiful place, old-world charm.Great food. Very pricey. The only issue I had was, after ordering a cheese course as an appetizer rather than dessert, I had to ask the waiter 3 times, to get the cheese cart to come to my table. At such a top notch place,I would have expected better service .But everything else was flawless. since they knew it was my birthday, they brought a beautiful dessert -gratis-with Happy Birthday written in chocolate...very nice touch!"
