Diner Reviews
  • "A cozy spot for leisurely snacking your way through some amazingly inventive food, alternating with food that just tries too hard to be different. Protein-based dishes were all fabulous. (Lamb, duck, halibut--separate dishes--with inspired highlighting and accompaniments.) Dessert was also fabulous, especially for those who like their sweets not-too-sweet. (Rich chocolate cake, beet curd, lemon relish and goat cheese.) Watch out for the waitress, though. We clearly were not up to her standards as customers, and she couldn't wait to get away from our table, sometimes still talking while she left. Ask her to repeat it? Yikes! Bad customers! We were one of two tables of customers, so I don't think busy-ness was the excuse. "

  • "Two friends and I enjoy trying restaurants that are new to us, especially neighborhood charmers like this one. We want to enjoy fun, new food combinations and good conversation. Both our goals were met. The service was impeccable, neither rushed nor drawn out. We liked the $55 tasting menu; you can select one (of usually three) choices from each of five sections. The portions are small so you do not overeat. Everyone in the party must choose to go this route, however. The actual flavor combinations were novel but not always spot-on--at least to my taste. We did enjoy many specific tastes that were new to us, but some combinations were too subtle or salty for our palates. The restaurant is tiny, thus not noisy."

  • "Very creative, well prepared and tasty food. Portions are tapas size so order a lot. Wine by the glass were excellent choices. Second time there and I want to go back every night."

  • "Piccolo is all about tiny bites of delight, and boy did they deliver! The 5-course tasting menu for $55 is recommended, as you pretty much get a course for free. When I went, I was joined by two other guests so given that the menu had 3 choices for each course, we were able to try every dish on the menu. Some of the highlights included the scrambled eggs with truffles and picked pigs feet, hearts of palm with cara cara oranges and cured scallops, and lamb with brown butter gnocchi and king trumpet mushrooms. We were seated in the back area which requires walking through the kitchen to get there, and that ended up being an unexpected treat too!"

  • "We went to Piccolo for a once-in-a-decade celebration with our adventurous 6- and 9-year-old kids. They were the only children in the restaurant at 6 p.m. on Friday. Piccolo serves "tasting-sized" portions, so one of everything on the menu was perfect amount of food. We passed plates among us and voted on our favorites between courses. All agreed, the meal was incredible! Artful, inventive, delicious. Particular hits were the salsify soup, the duck and the monkfish. The service was attentive, but not intrusive. We were tucked in the back dining room on our own (presumably so as not to disturb kid-free diners) at first and had the opportunity to walk through the kitchen, which was nifty for all. An outstanding, memorable dining experience."

  • "Some complaints I have read say that portions are too tiny. If you ordered ala carte, then I could see their point. My daughter and I each ordered the 5 course tasting menu and a cheese plate. As long as you weren't starving, the portions were fine. We were full, but not stuffed. I think people are used to getting more food than they should really eat at one sitting. The food was very unique and tasty, but not weird just to be different. It was well thought out with very interesting flavors. The wine list had many names I didn't recognize, but the 2 ordered were very good and fair priced. I felt $55 for the tasting menu and $14 for the cheese plate was a very fair price. Service was efficient, non-intrusive and not snooty."

  • "We celebrated our 10yr wedding anniversary at the restaurant and had a great experience. The food was great, and the service even better. I would highly recommend this restaurant to my family and friends."

  • "Food was delicious but we ordered a ton of it (which adds up quickly) and still left hungry. Great flavors and presentation, but very little to eat. Probably won't be going back. While I definitely don't need huge amounts of food, this was really, REALLY small."

  • "Piccolo is one of those restaurants that comes along every once in a while that evinces the cutting edge of retro. Their use of products such as duck gizzard, veal tongue, sweetbreads, bone marrow, oxtail, and tete de porc (head cheese) speak to the retro, an earlier time when offal was not awful, but the stuff of everyday home cooking in a bygone era. But, the chef's use of these locally sourced products is creative and elegant, and made the the stars of their small plates, with the inclusion of salsify, mushroom broth and other companions that perfectly meld together. The one critique is of the wine list. The wines by the glass selection is only adequate, though nicely laid out according to qualities rather than varietal or appellation."

  • "The chef is amazing. I am so thankful that he chooses to stay in MN when he could clearly go anywhere with his talent. This was my birthday dinner and I will probably never be able to afford this kind of meal for a long time, it was worth every penny. If I knew this is the food they had in heaven, I would be ready to die."

  • "We did the tasting menu and it was awesome. I loved the duck/duck gizzard course. This time we augmented the meal with the cheese course which I now realize is not be missed. It was my husband's birthday and they gave us an extra dessert that involved peanut butter and chocolate. Can't wait for our next visit--probably my birthday."

  • "Piccolo is in a league of its own. The flavors and creativity are outstanding. We had the 5 course tasting menu and it was just delicious. My partner and I share (especially when it comes to food), and we found each and every bite delivered a wonderful taste sensation. Bravo to Piccolo!"

  • "This was our 2nd time dining here in 2 months. We continue to love this intimate neighborhood gem! From the great wine list, to the clever and beautifully creative meals to the great service! Truly fabulous and we can't wait to return!"

  • "Always blown away by the food presented a Piccolo. The always changing seasonal menus provide a culinary and artistic experience that is hard to match anywhere else in the Twin Cities."

  • "This was my second visit to Piccolo and I enjoyed it as much as the first. You should come to this restaurant knowing that the chef is playing with your pallet just a little. But on balance you'll like what you get even if one or two items don't stir you as much as others. I would reserve Piccolo for special occasions. The wine list is tops. If you're not a wine person, or if you don't drink wine, much of the appeal of the chef's style would be diminished. We have eaten together at many restaurants all over the world and consider ourselves foodies, not snobs. Piccolo is a favorite."

  • "I was recommended to Piccolo from my chef, and I knew going into my experience at Piccolo there was a very small chance if not a non-existant chance I would be disappointed. I was right. The service was perfect, he was able to answer any question on the food wether it was the ingredient itself or how it was prepared. He helped me find a nice bottle to drink after a short, pleasant conversation. The food was just perfect, me and my date got the 5 course taster and tried two from each category, plus the cheese plate. So many flavors without being overdone, just the right amount of food, just perfect. The understated interior lent itself to the food focus of the restaurant. I can't wait to go back."

  • "A new find for us. A perfect small restaurant with great food. Our server was a gem. He knew the menu like the back of his hand. Was so helpful and took his time with us. The rest of the wait staff was outstanding as well. We will return!!"

  • "My friend and I planned to go there because we love chef Doug and his food. We were not disappointed, every bite out of our plate was a food-gams, presentation was impeccable. The chef tasting menu for $55 is a steal, my friend and I were able to taste and share everything. Server was attentive and very knowledgable. Will definitely go back."

  • "The service was very friendly and helpful. We chose from the 5 course menu. Each was an excellent taster size, with all courses having an excellent presentation and perfectly cooked and seasoned. The flavors were frequently studies in contrasts and with surprises. We highly recommend this intimate restaurant."

  • "Piccolo was an amazing experience and delicious meal. I would definitely recommend Piccolo to any adventurous eaters who are not afraid to try new things. Being a picky eater here would probably not work, depending on your tastes and food restrictions. We had the tasting menu and it was definitely the best option, its a little pricey, but well worth the price and amount of food you get. Also, we went on a Thursday but on the weekend I would definitely recommend a reservation as the place is very small."

  • "We enjoyed introducing Piccolo to our guests. They were very impressed with the food. We were seated in the smaller second room which is quieter and a little warmer in winter according to the hostess. The brown eggs and salsify soup were big hits. We love that this outstanding chef believes in artistic presentation as well as tantalizing flavors. One of the finest dining spots currently in the Twin Cities."

  • "What do you expect from a Safari? Being surprised, feeling alive and vibrant? You simply let go, to be open for all the new experiences -right? Well that is Piccolo a Food Safari for me and my love... you simply don't know as with a true Safari what you going to see, taste and experience. However with Piccolo you expect and receive a superb personalized service, an intellectual culinary safari that seeks your attention and demands complete mindfulness. BTW it was our anniversary, throughout the course we received a couple highly flavorful dishes that we did not ordered (excellent), including at the end a very special signed 'thank you Card'... thank you PICCOLO!"

  • "We picked Piccolo for a 40th birthday dinner, after hearing/reading so much about it. It's a cozy, relaxed, welcoming neighborhood restaurant with very good service. The tasting menu was inspired; and we found the small portions (they are) well presented and satisfying. I was expecting some explosive and memorable flavors, but I would describe the food as more than decent, some a bit salty, and others disappointingly bland- We enjoyed the dessert the most. I will probably consider it again for special occasions; However, I haven't added it to my top 5 restaurants in Minneapolis (not yet)."

  • "We picked this place sort of by accident on Sunday. Our "destination" turned out not to have reservations available so we gave Piccolo a shot, despite a menu that looked somewhat adventurous in spots. We went with the 5 course (we realize now that anyone would be foolish not to). We were all blown away by the quality of the food and the amazing presentations. Service was spotty, however. There was a degree of impatience by some of the staff on inquiries about the menu and what was presented, a few items not remembered, and our server, while nice enough, was a bit overly serious about the whole thing. They needed to lighten up a bit from our perspective. Nevertheless, lovely dinner and we highly recommend Piccolo."

  • "The food was outstanding. We intend to go back. The space is small, so one is a bit crowded and the noise can be "energetic." But the food transcends the limitations of the space."

  • "The food was very good, what there was of it. The portions were really small. On most of the plates, the protein was the smallest part.Though, the flavors overall were imaginative and very interesting. Also, the seating was very crowded. It is a small place and they used all of it."
