A word from Piccolo Venice
S. Irene Virbila, Times Staff Writer writes:

"At Piccolo, the tiny Italian spot in Venice, offers something more than standard fare.

It's an Indian summer night on the Venice boardwalk and a typically Fellini-esque scene with poncho-wearing retro hippies beating out tunes on battered guitars while skaters speed among joggers, bikers and beach lovers walking their pooches.

The crescent moon hangs above the palm trees ruffled by the salty breeze. And at 5 Dudley Ave., a block from the beach, bohemian bons vivants are sipping wine at tables in front of Piccolo Ristorante Italiano. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The menu has many innovative and interesting choices. Most met taste expectations. Portions were very modest, which in an obese world makes sense. I am fine with smaller portions, as long as the price reflects the size and quality. For example the gnocchi looked like a hand full of peas in a little drizzle of sauce. My only complaint is each dish was quite expensive. As long as you have a fat wallet and a slim figure, this restaurant is for you."

  • "I thought the food and service was great! The cost was a bit much, so I know I can't go there as often as I would like, but I would return sometime in the near future. It would of be better if there was more selection of wines to select from by the glass. I wish wine by the bottle had more affordable prices available. I have been to many 5 star restaurants that would have the high priced, but also low prices to select from. Thus, we would of drank more wine. I believe the lowest priced bottle was $75.00 and that same wine at Trader Joe is $19.95."

  • "What a special place. We felt like we were back in Rome. The food, wine, and service were all great, but we just loved the ambience of this restaurant."

  • "Fantastic in every way imaginable... a "bit" pricey but usually worth it. Server was extremely knowledgable and energetic about his product. What are you waiting for go try this place!"

  • "We arrived on time for our 8 pm reservation. The hostess check us in but didn't let us know that they are running late. 10-15 mn later we asked if our table was ready, and she informed us that it would be ready in 10-15 min. It took another 45 min to get a table. It was almost 9pm when we got a table. Once we got sited service and food were very good."

  • "The food was very good particularly the pasta. The service was very rushed. When having desert with coffee the cups were taken away without asking for refills and the check was brought without asking for it. I guess they were trying to quickly turn tables. For an otherwise nice dinner, our party of four felt it ruined our otherwise pleasant dinner."

  • "This place never disappoints. Even our sophisticated, picky, London-Paris-New York friends loved it."

  • "This little gem of a restaurant reminds me of Little Italy in New York. The service was great. My friend had food allergies and they came up with delicious alternative. We had the tasting menu which was delicious. I like the ambience which is intimate and private."

  • "My party was so pleased with me for finding this place, two blocks from the house we rented. Amazing homemade pasta. The lasagna was to die for. The only thing we didn't like was the Amatriciana - too fishy. Great service, they were terrific with the 10 year old with us."

  • "the food was outstanding. the service courteous and professional. the only criticism is that we felt a bit hurried. then again, there were a lot of people waiting so it's understandable"

  • "We went during restaurat week. The food was amazing! Samll portions but each bite was so rich and floavorful that you savored it for minutes. We did end up being full at the end. Amazing service and beautiful romantic atmosphere. What a hidden gem! Can't beleive it's on the venice boardwalk. It's very expensive, so unless you've got it like that, save it for a special occasion. The best thing we had was the scallop crudo and the beef tongue."

  • "So, we loved this place. Went there for a special occasion dinner. The only problem was that my husband's wine glass broke (with wine in it) and when he ordered another one, he was charged for it! Other than that, it was amazing!"

  • "Piccolo is a wonderful little Italian spot that is tucked away in the small streets of Venice. The wine and food were excellent as well as the wait staff. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone for a special occasion."

  • "The food was absolutely outstanding! One of the best meals we have ever had in the Los Angeles area (where we have lived as foodies most of our lives)."

  • "6 course tasting menu was not really special. Presentation was excellent, service was good, but the food was overpriced."

  • "Great menu. Food was sophisticated and delicious. Ambiance was friendly, romantic, warm. Service was efficient, timely, serious and above all helpful. So many subtle and strong flavors delicately swirled together. The waiter was unobtrusively accommodating with my multiple food allergies. He was super serious, but eventually smiled. I loved that the ginger haired chef's tattoos kept peeking to of his jacket. Not the most subtle or gentle of tattoos but made the experience a little less serious, a little more accessible. Certainly more Venice. I have already recommended to friends. Will return on my next trip to Venice. IF you want to have a nice evening out, with a good friend or romantic interest. I recommend this place highly."

  • "Our little dinner group loves to try different restaurants and this was out first time to Piccolo. We loved the food, the wine, the cane light and the special attention from the darling waitstaff."

  • "I went to Dine LA for the fist time with my boyfriend to Piccolo. It was recommend to me by a friend. The place was really cute, great atmosphere and ambience. It was very romantic. The Kobe beef was delicious, as was the butternut and truffle. I would definitely come again!"

  • "I've eaten at Piccolo previously and the food was really something. I'm not sure if it was because it was dine la or because it had been a while but I was not impressed by it. It lacked seasoning on some dishes and the squid ink pasta was underdone. The best thing was dessert! I will probably give it another shot in the future and see what the outcome was."

  • "We tried Piccolo during restaurant week and I am so glad we did - the food was flavorful and true to Italian cooking. Excellent ingredients in each dish, the service was superb without the feeling of being hovered over, and the sense of being taken care of reminds me of my favorite restaurants in Italy when I was growing up."

  • "Exceeded expectations. Service wonderful. Our server was a gem. I loved the food and can't wait to go back again."

  • "I wanted to like this place, but I sadly could not find any reason to. I went to Piccolo for a romantic evening with my spouse and I do not know if it was because we are younger or what but the servers were not friendly. I will say their service was prompt but oddly cold. The food was only okay, if it was a cheaper restaurant I might of forgiven the food, but at a fine dining establishment I would expect the food to be excellent not just average. In the end, if your into wine they seemed to have a good selection, if you want good food or friendly service I would go elsewhere."

  • "We went for Dine LA. Unlike other restaurants duribg Dine LA week, this restaurant offers great selections for a great price. I would definitely go back whether regular price or not. The restaurant is a bit hard to find and valet parking is not located in front of their restayrant. Allow enough time because there are many one way streets here; thus hard to go back. Other than that, service is great and everything is made from scratch. Impressive food. They cook their seafoods, meats, pastas to perfection. Great for foodies."

  • "Ordered the DineLA menu plus the albacore appetizer. Brought a bottle of 1997 Clerico Barolo. Read some of the negative reviews, and was prepared to be critical of food etc. The food was excellent. The service was excellent without being overbearing. The ambiance was very pleasant. The host could not have been more gracious. Overall one of the best dining experiences my wife and I have had in the last year."

  • "Trip Advisor reviews noted some snootiness at Piccolo, but we encountered none of that, despite using a Blackboard Eats discount for a 5 course meal. As others have noted, the portions are small in relation to, say, the Cheesecake Factory, but they are similar to other tasting menus or European sizes. This is not the "Tuscan" style, pizzas and pastas restaurant that has proliferated in the US. It is, rather, perched between that and super fine dining. All courses were excellent. They have an extensive wine list (no liquor), but beware that there are only 5-10 bottles from $50 to $65. Many choices at higher prices."

  • "Wonderful food, attentive service, lovely room. We did the 5-course chefs tasting menu. The portions were SO small that we probably ate 3 baskets of bread. The Lamb Carpaccio was delicious! I opted for the steak and it was delicious...but considering the small portion, had a lot of fat. My mom didn't like her dessert and they were gracious and offered to give her something else...much appreciated! Wish the neighborhood was nicer. Not the nicest of walks after dinner. The wine list was also impressive - my server suggested a wonderful wine. Will definitely go back and highly recommend."

  • "Second time at this restaurant and it did not disappoint. The lamb carpaccio might be the best carpaccio I've ever had. I think it might be the best Italian restaurant in LA."

  • "As always the food was outstanding, well prepared and presented. They rushed us from the moment we stepped into the restaurant, letting us know that they were more interested in turning over our table than in serving us. The worst moment came when the busboy tried to clear the table of our first course when we were still eating. One of us still had a fork in her hand. The waiter, limited English, didn't understand the problem. We felt totally unwelcome. It is also criminal that they charge $35 for corkage. We have vowed not to order wine from their extraordinarily expensive list but the corkage fee is so off-putting that it may dissuade us from going again."

  • "Very disappointed! Have been here in 5 or 6 times and had great meals. This last visit with friends from NY was so bad I do not think I'll go back again. We had the tasteing menu - very small portions which you expect at this restaurant but these were miniscule. 4 of the 5 items were bland or worse. Wine was good! Waiter was very helpful and attentive. We were seated at the four top right next to the door (we made reservations about 10 days in advamce) which made a bad dinner much worse; if you choose Piccolo do not accept this table, I wish I would have walked out and gone anyplace else!"
