It's an Indian summer night on the Venice boardwalk and a typically Fellini-esque scene with poncho-wearing retro hippies beating out tunes on battered guitars while skaters speed among joggers, bikers and beach lovers walking their pooches.

The crescent moon hangs above the palm trees ruffled by the salty breeze. And at 5 Dudley Ave., a block from the beach, bohemian bons vivants are sipping wine at tables in front of Piccolo Ristorante Italiano. Continued

  • "A noisy experience since one table was extremely loud and was disturbing- kind of touristy crowd- Salads were very small pressed together in a 3" circle and almost non existent on the menu- My fish was never grilled,tasted greasy & fishy - Desert seemed to have come out of a box never made there- The atmosphere tries to be romantic with inspirations from Venice through images on walls and a few masks- I will not bother going there again- Also the street location in Venice at night is home to many homeless men sitting under the wall greeting you as you leave the restaurant to go back to the boardwalk- made me feel the whole area is rundown and unsafe to walk as I might get attacked or bothered-"

  • "Piccolo's setting is pleasing but the food was mediocre. The fish was pretty fishy tasting and the flavor was just average. The watercress salad was the best item we had. Service was generally attentive bit we had several servers, many of which repeated the specials. It was overpriced for what is was."

  • "What lusciousness! Watercress salad with palmitos and pecorino. A caprese that looks like a parfait and tastes like clouds of essence of tomatoes and basil. An amazing buckwheat tagliolini with squab, a gorgeous disc of quail egg (!) lasagna with a pungent shaving of black truffle. Steps from Venice beach, a thriving outpost of Venice, Italy. Unforgettable."

  • "Been here a few times, food is outstanding and creative. Came here again for a special event Saturday night. Food was incredible and what an oasis in an interesting neighborhood. I wish that the help would be more approachable and willing to discuss but there is an arrogance to the waitstaff. I wanted to see what we could do to share an appetizer or appetizers with the table as well as a pasta dish and they just explained it couldn't be done, which it could have easily done with the pasta dish and they did with one of the appetizers. Food was amazing though, just wish they would be more approachable, they are busy, but would be good to feel good about the interaction with the waitstaff."

  • "Came here for the first time. It was well worth the money. The staff was great and we had the scallops, watercress salad, venison ragu, and wagyu beef. All were excellent. Then upon leaving we got a flat tire and decided to wait inside for AAA to arrive. The staff took care of us and even gave us glasses of wine on the house for our inconvenience. Classy establishment with authentic Italian food and great people. We will definitely be back!"

  • "I love this restaurant. We used to be there every week when we lived close by...now, though less frequently, we're still treated like family when we walk in the door. That is such a special thing, especially in L.A. I crave their interpretation of caprese....and the truffle pasta is the best I've had in town. It never disappoints and the staff is wonderful."

  • "Everything was perfect! The ravioli with fontina cheese and shredded black truffle was a highlight. Each dish was so beautifully prepared. We did the prix fixe dinner and we had a taste of many dishes which were made to perfection. The cream puffs were the BEST ever and the chocolate on top was amazing!"

  • "We went here tonight for the first time. The food was good though I'm not sure the price justified the meal. We ordered off the menu rather than the Tasting so perhaps that's why my review is lower than others'. The salad was too salty which was very strange as never had a salty salad before. Will say the cheese on top was good. Really enjoyed the sea urchin pasta and recommend that. The lasagna was actually more like a souffle which was decent, but way too rich. After 3 bites and it was already too much. The service was attentive though perhaps a little too much so. Every 3-5 minutes someone would hover over our table, look at everything, and then walk away. If you are ok with too much service and a tasting menu give it a shot."

  • "When I say service is lacking, I don't mean there weren't four servers serving each table; I don't mean the main server didn't refill your wine every time you took two sips. I mean, the server we had was completely without charm or friendliness. He was somber, serious, pompous and overly formal. This is a restaurant on Venice Beach, for Pete's sake. The other two Piccolos (Hosteria del Piccolo in Santa Monica and Venice have just as excellent food but provide a much more fun experience!"

  • "We expected a meal with unusual flavor and smooth attentive help. Instead the waiter was rude and not helpful in explaining the dishes. My ink spaghetti with Dungeness crab was good but not great. Snooty waiter made the experience miserable. "

  • "During dinner at Piccolo, my beau and I agreed that it would be worth coming to L.A. from San Francisco, where we live, just to eat at Piccolo. It's that good! I've never ordered lasagna at an Italian restaurant as I considered it too pedestrian for a foodie like myself. But I couldn't resist having it with quail egg. The dish didn't look or taste anything like the lasagna I'm accustomed to seeing and eating -- and that was a good thing. The textures and flavors were sensational. My beau had risotto and thoroughly enjoyed it. We've dined here before but hadn't been in for a while since we hadn't been in the area. Nonetheless, the staff remembered us and where we sat last time. We look forward to dining at Piccolo again and again and again. "

  • "I had been to Piccolo before. The food was great. I'm not sure if we only ordered pasta, but that was the only thing that was great this time around. My friend and I went for a tasting menu, 5 courses. The only 2 courses that blew us away were the pasta choices. The appetizers were OK. The main course was nothing to write home about. The desserts were throw aways. The pasta dishes were great. Great flavor. Great consistency. Exactly what were were expecting. I'm not sure if it was because the menu we ordered from were from the tasting menu, but the meal did not meet up to our expectations that were set from our previous visits."

  • "Don't bother to order the Kobe steak..five slices on your plate, very little meat, mostly fat, one entire piece couldn't eat!!! I know the small plate thing is in, but I personally won't go back there again, didn't feel satisfied. Presentation is not what I like to spend my money on, that is my boyfriend's thing, the only reason I plan these types of places. Also, the corkage fee is outrageous at $35, cost more than the awesome Zinfandel we took! Parking cost $15, went back to car and it's $20 after 7 pm, make sure you have cash. One more thing, if you don't like being stared at the entire time (I don't) to make sure they take your plates for the next course, don't go..if you like lots of attention that's your place."

  • "The service far exceeded the quality of the food. While both appetizers were excellent, spaghetti with eel and crispy sweet breads on polenta pancake, the main course meats, pork chop and rabbit were very dry and over cooked. The desserts were outstanding, Bicchierino, a chocolate mousse with espresso crumble and cream and the croquembouche, made with a hazelnut chocolate (it may have been Nutella ) glaze. The wine list was one of the priciest I've seen in a while. We ordered two glasses of Château Neuf de Pape at $24 per glass; it was delicious! All in all it was pricey, but fine, not as great as I expected! "

  • "The menu has many innovative and interesting choices. Most met taste expectations. Portions were very modest, which in an obese world makes sense. I am fine with smaller portions, as long as the price reflects the size and quality. For example the gnocchi looked like a hand full of peas in a little drizzle of sauce. My only complaint is each dish was quite expensive. As long as you have a fat wallet and a slim figure, this restaurant is for you."

  • "I thought the food and service was great! The cost was a bit much, so I know I can't go there as often as I would like, but I would return sometime in the near future. It would of be better if there was more selection of wines to select from by the glass. I wish wine by the bottle had more affordable prices available. I have been to many 5 star restaurants that would have the high priced, but also low prices to select from. Thus, we would of drank more wine. I believe the lowest priced bottle was $75.00 and that same wine at Trader Joe is $19.95."

  • "We arrived on time for our 8 pm reservation. The hostess check us in but didn't let us know that they are running late. 10-15 mn later we asked if our table was ready, and she informed us that it would be ready in 10-15 min. It took another 45 min to get a table. It was almost 9pm when we got a table. Once we got sited service and food were very good."

  • "The food was very good particularly the pasta. The service was very rushed. When having desert with coffee the cups were taken away without asking for refills and the check was brought without asking for it. I guess they were trying to quickly turn tables. For an otherwise nice dinner, our party of four felt it ruined our otherwise pleasant dinner."
