A word from Piccolo Restaurant of Huntington
2013 Long Island Zagat Survey Rates Piccolo with 27 in "Food," 20 in "Decor," and 25 in "Service".

A "faithful" crowd stays true to this "upscale" New American-Italian in Huntington, which "deserves its reputation" for "superb cuisine" spanning "delicious pastas" to "phenomenal meat and fish"; the "top-notch" service and "intimate" setting with a pianist Sunday-Thursday will "make any occasion special", but make sure to reserve ahead because the cozy "close quarters" fill up fast on the weekends.

It is no wonder Piccolo has established itself as one of the best Huntington (if not, greater Long Island area) restaurants. From the moment I booked my reservation to the time my party and I left was an experience second to none. The professionalism and kindness of the servers and staff made this evening even more memorable. A special thanks for your patience in allowing our last guest to arrive well after the reservation time. It is clear that the chef and his staff have worked hard on creating a delicious and creative menu. The food, notably the wedge salad special and calamari appetizer, and the chicken parmigiana and swordfish entrees were full of flavor and prepared with attention to detail. The wine list has selections for all tastes and budgets. I could not have chosen a better place to celebrate with family and friends.

I must be living on a different planet the the other people writing these 4 star reviews. Or maybe they have never had good Italian food, but ugh...what a bad dinner. We had reservations , were seated promptly and told by our waiter that if there was anything we wanted that wasn't on the extensive menu, we would be accommodated. That was nice, but the menu is huge, so we couldn't imagine we would want anything not on the menu. We ordered drinks. My husband's drinkcame with a METAL STRAINER in it. Obviously sent it back. The apps were fine- he had Peconic scallops and I had Tuna Tacos ( I know- not Italian- tasty, but seaweed salad in an Italian restaurant is just weird). The noise level was awful and conversations carry across the room, so we listened to a diatribe about the "86 Mets while we waited for our entrees. I ordered Veal Saltimbocca, which was pretty tasteless and needed salt. I couldn't taste the proscuitto at all, which usually would have given the dish some flavor and the mashed potatoes (?) that came with the dish were bland. The sauteed spinach OK, but oily and that's about it. My husband ordered Chicken Scarpariello and asked for pasta instead of mashed potatoes. The waiter wasn't sure if that was possible. Hey, what happened to accommodating us if we wanted anything not on the menu? When the dish came, the mashed potatoes were on the plate so he asked that they be removed. The chicken breast was cut into cubes- very unappetizing and was so overcooked and dry that it was difficult to cut. He couldn't eat eat and sent it back. His linguini came on the side and was overcooked and mushy, and the sauce was very sweet. It was our anniversary so they sent over a plate of whipped cream and strawberries- which was nice of them, especially since our meal was so poor. By the way- they charged us $12 for the linguini we asked for as a substitute. With all the good italian restaurants on LI, I can't imagine how Piccolo's has the reputation it has.

We've been to Piccolo too many times to count over the many years they've been in existence. We're always happy and satisfied. This time I had the duck, which is always well prepared, never overdone, always delicious. My wife had veal parmesan, again done right. We started by sharing eggplant rollatini--excellent tomato sauce and delicious. The wine list is extensive, and there are a few wines priced in the twenties! Remarkable for a restaurant of this quality. They know what they're doing, which is why they've been open for over twenty years.

Overall disappointment in service... 3 different people working the table... "Misplaced" dinner order resulted in 1/2 hour wait between salad and entrée... Fish was undercooked w/ bland sauce and unimaginative vegetables. Staff did offer dessert on the house. Would not go back on a Saturday night. They look slammed, overbooked.

The service was fantastic and the ambiance was delightful. However when it came to the food...our party of 6 found that the food items that were good, were great and they rest was just below average. For the price, we would have expected all the food to be great. For example...the wrapped figs, fall salad, braised short rubs and lava cake were all out of this world. However, our daughters chicken was dry, the pasta was dry and the butternut squash raviolis were once again, dry and tasted stale. So in short, the food quality was very inconsistent.

We had the figs and fried zucchini flowers as an appetizer and they were both fantastic. The shrimp was cooked to perfection and was not too garlicky. The tuna cooked rare was very good because the tuna was of very high quality. It is a little loud, but that is OK because you can have a normal conversation and not feel like everyone can listen in. They do turn you over quickly, so maybe ask for a late seating if you plan on lingering . Overall, this is a really great place.

We shared the Thai calamari to start. It was tender, sweet and a little spicy. Then shared a cocoa dusted goat cheese salad. I didn't really taste the cocoa (saw it), but the salad was tasty and plentiful. I had the tuna special, which was done just right and served over a bed of quinoa cooked in coconut milk. Delicious!! My guest had the opah special, which was nice and crisp on the outside and tender and moist on the inside. It was the first time either of us had tried opah, and we loved it! We shared a chocolate lava cake for dessert, which was moist and delicious. As always, we left full, satisfied and happy!

My first impression was that the dining room and bar are in need of a little restoration and updating and the atmosphere is somewhat claustrophobic. The greeting was prompt and the menu explanation was thorough but a bit rushed. When ordering our meal, the waiter pushed appetizers and sides very hard and I felt rushed and pressured. He placed too much emphasis in increasing sales and not enough on our experience. Our guests ordered the soft-shelled crabs and said they were well prepared and the presentation was good. My wife was disappointed with the duck, the house specialty. My special chicken dish was good but not spectacular. For the price, I can't say it was a good value overall, just OK.

The ambiance was warm, cozy and surprisingly quiet although the restaurant was quite busy. The service was extremely professional and very attentive. And most importantly the food was outstanding! We would not hesitate to return. The cost is definitely on the higher side, but well worth it for such a fine dining experience!

A Friday evening's dinner out featuring very tasty dishes and well-timed, uniformly good service completely negated by a terribly noisy environment. I can appreciate the need to pay attention to operating margins, but when you have to pack people in like sardines, it's no longer an upscale dining experience. For nearly $140 a couple (shared appetizer, entrees, one glass of wine each, coffees, tax and tip), I expect something more than a noisy cafeteria experience. We marveled at the waiter literally shouting the specials to the party of six at the adjacent table. The food was good enough to prompt me to consider trying again, albeit very early or late, and not on a weekend.

The food in this place must be good or why else would they be so crowded on a Wednesday night? Our appetizer, stuffed Zucchini blossoms was very good. The Caesar salad was a little bland (needed more garlic and lemon). My entre veal francese was excellent. My wife's spaghetti squash Parmesan was delicious. We shared some malted milk ball gellato which was also great. My after dinner drink was terrible. I asked for amaretto with a splash of cognac in a snifter. When I got it, it was ice cold and watered down. Obviously they made it on the rocks and just dumped the watered down drink in the sifter, without the ice. The waiter, when he finally came around, was very apologetic and offered to get me a proper drink. I just asked for the check.

I have to say that we do not go to Piccolo enough. The food is always outstanding and the service is wonderful. The staff can actually anticipate what you might want. I always have the duck and I know that I should try something else, but when it is that good, it is what I go back for. Maybe I should go more often. All I would advise is to improve the beer list. Add a few micro brews to make things interesting.

We have eaten here many times over the more than twenty years Piccolo has existed, with and without friends. It's pricey, but always worth it. What really makes a restaurant last many years is consistency, and Piccolo has it. During the summer they have an excellent version of breaded soft shell crab, and we always have that, although my wife requests it with pasta instead of vegetables, and they are always glad to oblige, even on crowded Saturday nights. We had started with fried zucchini blossoms (good, but a little bland). Our friends had a chicken dish and duck - both of which they enjoyed. Desserts are always wonderful (We share them).Service is always solicitous. It's a satisfying experience.
