A word from Piccino
When we opened the doors of our tiny restaurant in December 2006, our goal was to make Piccino as welcoming as the home of a close friend, our food as simple and beautifully executed as possible. We"re honored that Piccino became a thriving hub of the community. And in May of 2011 we moved from our original space into a new home (dubbed The Yellow Building) on the corner of 22nd & Minnesota Streets, which we share with our friends MAC (Modern Appealing Clothing), and DIG wine shop.

Our menu still features the classic and seasonally driven thin-crust pizzas and polpette (Tuscan-style pork and beef meatballs) Piccino is known for; our salads and soups use the finest organic produce sourced directly from small local farms. Piccino's menu has expanded to include more small starter plates, house-made pastas, contorni (vegetable sides), and special entrees of meat, fish, or poultry. Seasonal desserts and expertly made coffee complete our daily offerings.

  • 1st Class Food, But...

We had a reservation and arrived right on time (fairly early in the evening), but the host couldn't manage much of a welcome. He then fumbled through the menus, said nothing, didn't look at us, turned, and and walked away. Apparently, we were to follow him. Food was delicious, but the timing was off. We were still eating our salads (quickly) and the pizzas were put down. We weren't offered a second glass of wine. Nobody checked how our meal was. We got the message: they wanted us out or simply didn't care. It was surprising to see these issues in an established restaurant. It wasn't full and nobody was waiting. I would have expected a better host (perhaps he needed a smaller house) and better timing. Terrific food, though.

Sadly they ran out of the chicken with polenta and it was only 7 p.m. I ordered one of their pizzas and it was okay. The service was very good and it was quiet which we really liked! We would go back.

We love everything about Piccino. The pizza's are wonderful, the pastas are delicious and the wine is quite nice too. The only challenge is getting in spontaneously and getting a table. But if you're willing to do the counter, it's often possible. Just reserve for a table. Go and enjoy this little lovely lovely!

I made a reservation and we were seated quickly but waited for 30 plus minutes to place our order and I even then I had to signal the waiter and then waited quite some time before food arrived. I brought two guests the week before and everything went well, but this week was such a disappointment.

You will spend a lot for very little brunch. While the dishes were well prepared, there was a scant amount of food on the plate. And don't dare ask for toast with that thimble of smoked trout and eggs or you'll get a curt "we don't do toast" response. Sheesh! You will leave craving for a good old pedestrian stack of pancakes with eggs, bacon, and homefries.

We 4 were promptly seated at our reservation time. And that was about the best I could say. The wait staff, several of whom seemed to be our waiter, but we never could decide who really was our waiter, took forever (10-15 minutes?) to attend to us once seated. A different person then eventually came and took our orders, verbally, which resulted in two items that never came. One of us was served (by yet another person) their entre 8 to 10 minutes before the next one came, which was being shared by two people. Then mine eventualy came about 10 minutes later. This was our second, and last time going there. Twenty minute gap to serve three entres?

Our first impressions were very favorable, but after 5-6 visits over a few years we've likely had our last Piccino meal. The menu changes often but is always very concise, & portions 'n pours are modest at best considering the price. When the kitchen nails the food & service shines, it's all good. When dishes are muddled or otherwise poorly executed & service falls short then cons outnumber pros, which alas is what seems to happen most at Piccino.

Took a bit to be seated even with a reservation. Our server and our meal changed our initial opinion about the restaurant. Had the Iiwa goat cheese appetizer which was OK. The goat cheese was delicious, but the huckleberry-pear compote and pumpkin crackers were not a good match. The house made pappardelle with figs, mint and chili was outstanding, such an unusual yet perfect flavor combo. Can't wait to try to at home. The frutta estiva pizza which our waiter recommended with plums, pancetta, sorrel and mint was very good, also a another creative combination of flavors. We also liked that fact that when we asked our waiter for a wine recommendation, he suggested a cheaper wine than we were looking at which was a perfect match for our meal.

We were very disappointed in the slow arrival of the food in a not-that-busy lunch time at a restaurant we have enjoyed in the past. The wait person noticed this and brought us some complimentary house-made seeded crackers which turned out to be the highlight of the meal. Our 2 salads were skimpy; where was the albacore? and the couscous pasta one was overcooked. The mushroom pizza toppings were delicious, but the restaurant seems to be making a flatbread-style crisp crust now instead of thin chewy dough. I don't know if we will return. Sarah Kushner

this was my fourth time to Piccino and most disappointing. Not sure I will return. Waitress was not informed about the dishes, acted blase and indifferent and was not attentive. It was 8:15 pm and they had run out of one of the main entrees (albacore) leaving only one pasta (boring) and not many options for non-red meat eaters.

San Francisco is brimming with terrific restaurants, and I hardly ever go to the same place twice. I have been to Piccino 3 times in the last few months alone. I absolutely love this restaurant. It has high quality food that is inventive and original without being fussy. The service is always perfect. The wine list is great, and the prices are very reasonable. I love this place. I almost don't want to leave this review because it is getting harder and harder to get a table here, but I will share the love.

This is a nice place in an area that was once pretty bad. The service was not the greatest; it was like they were slow and not quite prepared for the customers that wanted in at opening time. But I had a great time sitting at the bar talking to the pastry chef (he will be famous on his own one day) and the pizza was good. I had fun. But it is a long way out in Dogpatch.

I hesitate to write a review strictly for selfish reasons.... don't want them to get so popular I can't get a table. This is a great neighborhood spot but I also go here with my out of town friends because it's conveniently located near 280 and 101 freeways. The staff is very knowledgeable on the wine list/food and they always have stellar recommendations. They take great care to provide an interesting menu of seasonal items and wines that pair perfectly. I've been coming here since they opened and will continue to do so. This place rocks! p.s. don't miss the their cafe around the corner with the plum muffins... to die for!

I found the portions really small. The prices were HIGH. For $26, I felt my piece of salmon should have been twice the size! My $9 salad had just a few lettuce leaves and some thinly sliced radish. I had my picky son with me, and there was only one thing on the menu that I felt he would eat. Where is the plain old chicken/rice/potatoes? There should be at least a couple kid friendly items. The pizzas were an average $16 each for a small super thin crust with barely any topping. My pork belly had accompanying veggies that were doused in straight up lemon juice. The restaurant was casual, but had a fancy stuck up air about it. Our server was very sweet and kind. Bottom line: The food is tasty, there should just be more of it for the price!
