A word from Piccino
When we opened the doors of our tiny restaurant in December 2006, our goal was to make Piccino as welcoming as the home of a close friend, our food as simple and beautifully executed as possible. We"re honored that Piccino became a thriving hub of the community. And in May of 2011 we moved from our original space into a new home (dubbed The Yellow Building) on the corner of 22nd & Minnesota Streets, which we share with our friends MAC (Modern Appealing Clothing), and DIG wine shop.

Our menu still features the classic and seasonally driven thin-crust pizzas and polpette (Tuscan-style pork and beef meatballs) Piccino is known for; our salads and soups use the finest organic produce sourced directly from small local farms. Piccino's menu has expanded to include more small starter plates, house-made pastas, contorni (vegetable sides), and special entrees of meat, fish, or poultry. Seasonal desserts and expertly made coffee complete our daily offerings.

  • "I thought the portions for the price were awfully small. A date bread and goat cheese plate came with 2 small triangles of the bread, not nearly enough for the modest amount of cheese offered. Salads also quite petite. The quality of the food however is very high, excellent. Tasty and fresh and well balanced. And the room, especially on this sunny afternoon, was brightly lit from the ample windows and delightful to be in. Ambiance was upbeat without being overly noisy or crowded feeling. Charming spot."

  • "With friends visiting, I wanted a good restaurant where they would be spared the hassle of driving into downtown. Parking is tight in Dogpatch, but it's not $30 either. The food was quite good and the excellent waiter, Peter, sensed that I wanted some pasta with the meatball dish and provided a kid's portion on the side. Perfect. Very nice greeting , comfortable, unpretentious atmosphere, interesting wine list. I whined (as I always do when I'm just having a single glass of vino) that I am less concerned about which wine I drink than I am about the bottle having been open for 72 hrs. Peter brought over a fresh bottle and I could not have been more pleased. All the food was of fine ingredients, fresh and well prepared. We liked it all."

  • "Went for birthday dinner and the food was good. Service from our waiter was good until he disappeared after dessert had been ordered. From there it was downhill, a rude and aggressive woman gave us our check 2 minutes after dessert had been served. Generally, not an issue except she made it clear she wanted us to hurry and leave. Really?! It's my birthday and I have taken one bite of my dessert!! Why weren't the two women at the next table who had been there longer than us and were only drinking water not asked to leave? We were still eating a dish we were paying for! Unacceptable and completely ruined the dining experience on what was meant to be a special evening. So many restaurants in SF, Piccino is not that special, going elsewhere."

  • "Piccino is always a treat. We usually get a pizza, but this time we decided to try the sandwiches they offer at lunchtime. My king oyster mushroom/cresenza cheese/pickled cabbage sandwich was scrumptious. My wife's shrimp sandwich must have been as well, since she didn't offer to share a bite. Our little gems salad with shaved Meyer lemon and shaved pickled vegetables was also yummy. Great, as always."

  • "Upon arrival for our scheduled reservation at 6:30 pm, I was told that I called the day before and changed it to 9:30 pm. Especially because I had NOT changed the reservation, I was disturbed but mostly because staff offered no apology except for the say: "We can make it work", and we were seated around 6:30. Once at the table, we asked for bread with our wine to which our server replied: "We are out of bread." At 6:30 pm? Weird for sure, but mostly because the server acted like we were asking for something unusual and offered no apology or alternative. For the remainder of the meal, our server mostly ignored us only offering dessert at the end after we asked several other employees for help. Overall--very unsatisfying and unimpressed!"

  • "We came to this place without a lot of expectations and we left promising to ourselves that we'll go back. The restaurant is simply but tastefully decorated. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed and the food was delicious. I'm Italian and I tried the pasta with clams, which really impressed me. Every course, from pizza and pasta (squid ink pasta with Manila clams -- yum) through entrees (meltingly tender beek cheeks, for one) to dessert (excellent passionfruit crema) was superb. My only gripe is that the wine list is very pricy, with a few options in the $40-50/bottle range (and only 4 wines of any type under $40), going up into the stratosphere from there. For a casual place with reasonably priced food, it's hard to understand why there isn't a reasonable selection of wines in the $30-40 range, other than the obvious explanation that a decision has been made to make money on wine. Corkage, at $25, is advisable."

  • "Went there because of good reviews, very disappointed overall. First when I arrived, it took about 5 full minutes before someone came to greet me. At the table, our server was very nice tough. The food is barely average though. I have no idea what the big deal about these meatballs is. Not much better than the ones they sell at Costco. Yes, the pizza crust is very nice. Thin and crispy. But the toppings are below par. My mushroom pizza was just some mushroom paste that was so salty I had to drink all night. Will not go back for sure."

I like the casual formality - I say formal because the staff is supremely professional - they are on-the-ball, they always know when to show up and what to do or what to offer next - they are attentive without being obsequious. If there is a mix up or a problem, they do not lay blame, but are immediately responsive to correcting or improving that issue without the unnecessary overt apologies. Piccino's food, combinations of food items is creative without going over the top and they prices match their quality, style with respect to the atmosphere they create - light, airy with both subtle and full-bodied tastes - an enticing menu, all around!"

  • "We went to Piccino for my birthday. We were seated promptly upon arrival and the wait staff was courteous and attentive. We ordered the olives, pickled vegetables and crackers for appetizers. We really liked the choice of getting a carafe of wine rather than a whole bottle - perfect. Can I talk about the pan roasted brussel sprouts? Seriously delicious, utterly addictive. For entrees, I had the tagliatelle - the pasta was freshly made and served on a bed of savory goodness. My husband had the pork and beef polpette. They had an incredible flavor and were served with an amazingly fresh tasting tomato sauce. The polpette does not come with pasta and he ended up ordering a side of pasta to go with it. A great birthday dinner!"
