I have been here before and thought, "overrated" but I think I was not paying attention earlier. I took my cousin from Chicago here as he has some Georgian roots and I thought soul food would be a good choice. Before the food came, we had great service and great drinks - my cousin noted that this was the perfect spot. After dinner we all kind of just sat back and recounted our meals - we were a happy party of five. Go ahead and order something off the beaten path (Cat Fish a la Nantua) and be amazed. The place was surprisingly packed for a Tuesday night but that just made the point that this place really has something going on.

Pican's southern style food is very sweet and most dishes are (or appear to be from the menu) heavy. The jambalaya was good and the braised pork shoulder was excellent, but the green salad dressing, with pecans and currents was far too sweet. However, the dessert list looks lovely (we had the butterscotch pudding--not as good as 5's in Berkeley, but not half bad) and the list of bourbon's is amazing.

Our server, Christopher, provided the worst service I've ever received in a restaurant. Luckily, we were able to express our opinion about his inattentive and slow service in the $0.00 tip we left him on an $88.00 brunch check. As for the food, best described as marginal and overpriced, with atrociously overpriced drink offerings. NEVER AGAIN…even if someone else were paying!

My wife and I decided to come here for our anniversary dinner since we have heard good things about this place and it did not disappoint us. We started with Gulf Shrimp & Falls Mill Grits & Fire Dust Eggplant Fritters. For entree's my wife had Crescent City Flat Iron Steak I had Catfish a la Nantua both meals were delicious my Catfish was the best I ever had with shrimp & lobster sauce. Our waiter recommended a drink with ginger beer, orange juice and more this was a big hit. All i can say this is our favorite spot now

This was kind of a mid-week, last-minute visit after normal dining hours (9:30 reservation). So the place was a lot less crowded than usual, and pretty quiet. But the staff was very relaxed and friendly, able to take time to chat a bit. It was my friend's first time, and he loved his steak and the crawfish mac 'n' cheese. My pork was super tender (falling off the bone) and tasty. And we really enjoyed the medjool date starter. All good!

I used to come here often for the great food, drinks, and service but this last visit was a disappointment. It wasn't terrible but the service and food were definitely sub-par for the price and area. There are so many better options within walking distance. The drinks were still good but the food was a disappointment. I had the fried green tomatoes, salt and vinegar dates, collard greens, and pork shank. All the dishes were consistently strangely sweet. I'm hoping that it was just a fluke that night because there was a show at the paramount but I probably won't be heading back there anytime soon.

Just moved from Boston to Oakland! We have eaten at Pican in the past when vacationing to CA and have enjoyed the food and the service! We had an 8pm reservation for four on a Monday night! Our waiter engaged us quickly and from there the service went down hill. We placed drink orders that sat on the bar and we're finally brought to the table after we finished our appetizers. Our entrees arrived minus one side our waiter forgot to place and our waiter then disappeared. We finally walked up to the hostess to ask where our waiter was and could we order more drinks. In a nutshell the kitchen was on their game with the dishes coming quickly and as usual the food was excellent. Service was disappointing and for a $250 spend we would expect more!

I had a wonderful birthday dinner on 10/11/14. I arrived before my guest who got detained in traffic. The wait staff were very attentive. Our meal was excellent. The fried green tomatoes were very good. I had the flat iron steak that was cooked to perfection! The side of kale was also excellent. My lavender cocktail was very good and usually I'm more of a straight vodka martini girl. The cabernet was great. My guest had the pork shank and was very happy with it (she eat the whole thing). The wait staff were excellent. We really enjoyed our dinner.

I think Pican was a great restaurant for a special occasion because things can really add up! The quality of the food was really good but entrees are between $20-30, and with a drink, starter and maybe dessert we are over $50. It was close to the Paramount where my friend and I later saw a movie, so we only had to park once. It is not a casual restaurant so no tee shirts.....

If you want the best southern fried chicken in the 'hood, go to Pican. My son and oldest grandson opted for more of Pican's deep fried thighs rather than dessert. When a 16 yo boy gives up dessert for chicken you got to know the chicken is that good. And it is...having had several pieces then and again just this Sunday on my second visit to Pican for brunch. Our guests had the chicken eggs Benedict and walnut waffle. Both were sumptuous servings and some of the Benedict went into a doggy bag for later (note, they don't have a dog). But the waffle disappeared among "mmmm good" sounds every bite. I can attest to "mmmm good" as I also had the waffle, which was crisp on the outside and moist and flavorful on the in. Highly recommended.

This was my wife and my first visit-we'll be back. The ambience was upscale, the food was very tasty, and the service was friendly, warm, and efficient. It reminded us of our pre-Katrina trips to restaurants in New Orleans! Our only issue is that with the hard wood floors, the piano music carries and, at least on our night, was a bit overpowering. It would be nice if the music was softer. Nonetheless, we look forward to our next visit. (and parking is easy!)

The food and atmosphere at Pican is topnotch. However, our server was slow to get to us, slow to serve us; and this was so annoying that it took away from what was supposed to be a wonderful birthday celebration. We will remember this as an evening of frustration. Unfortunately, if you are paying the kind of prices they charge there, service should be high-end not lackluster. This pretty much ruined our evening.

Oakland is undergoing a new renaissance. And no restaurant exemplifies the sophisticated revival of downtown than Pican's location, ambiance and culinary experience that is Neuvo-Soul. The streets outside remind you of downtown SF, the Williamsburg District of Brooklyn or the Riverwalk of San Antonio. Vibrant, a place to come back too over and over again. There is nothing quite like eating the familiar and realizing that a creative chef can surprise your pallet in the most extraordinary and delightful ways. And the libations...well let's just say that my favorite culinary city, New Orleans, has been made accessible by car or local public transportation, and the sips were a smouth Bourbon delight. You'll need a reservation on Friday nights.

Celebrated my Mother-in-Law's 85 birthday at Pican restaurant in Oakland, CA and I must abmit, it was a blessing and I was very impressed. The Food was great (although I think the menu was a little limited) but, I was nice not to see the traditional Steaks, Chicken and Pasta dishes. This was a special ocasion and Pican hit the nail on the head. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to get away from the fast pace lifestyle of a big city and enjoy the simple blessings of Family and Friends.

Although the food at Pican was delicious, it would have been nice to have been served in a remotely timely fashion. We had a reservation for five people at 6:15, but did not receive or entrees until over two hours later, after making a compliant to the manager. We were entirely without service (including water refills, to ask how we were doing, etc.) for nearly an hour, and our server was nowhere to be seen. Further, neither the manager nor our server were polite in responding to our complaint. The manager did comp. our bottle of wine, but it took another half an hour to get our check, and had to request both the check and that our plates be bused after being finished eating for nearly half an hour.

We were at first enthusiastic there for the first time and in lovely space. Enjoyed friendly waitress who had been working there for 5 years. But soon realized this was not our style of food-- the corn bread was dry, Nothing interesting for vegan among us. I selected lobster dish that was very disappointing-- should have selected fish of the day or be advised by waitress. The kale was too oily. There was too much breading on tiny heavily coated green fried tomatoes, and fried eggplant. The veg entre dish was bland and not interesting. Even dessert tart missed pecans. Sorry it is lovely place but not worthwhile for us. I had integestion that the evening which never happens. Wanted better for high price

We LOVE Pican, which was bustling on a Mon night. Each dish had layers of spectacular flavor. Fried green tomatoes have the most delicious shredded pork stuffed between firm cornmeal fried tomato rounds with an assortment of yummy garnishes, like date slivers, that went with it perfectly. Our mains were the spectacular pork shank with peaches on a cornmeal base, and the expertly seared juicy flat iron steak. We shared a buttery rhubarb upside down cake garnished with strawberries and reduced balsalmic vinegar glaze with lemongrass ice cream, and the bourbon peach cobbler (a little too bourbony for us, but excellently done). Kudos to eclectic owner Michael Le Blanc, for whom this eatery is clearly a labor of love. We can't wait to come back.

I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday. It was beautifully designed, the lighting was perfect, and they had a woman playing the piano in the background which all set a nice romantic tone. The food was delicious, my boyfriend and I agreed the fried chicken was by far the best either of us have had. The restaurant was packed and at times it was difficult for us to hear each other from across the table, but that is really my only complaint. The service was wonderful, attentive but not overbearing. Our waitress even brought us a small dessert plate with happy birthday written in chocolate syrup on it after hearing me mention that it was my boyfriend's birthday. We're already planning our next visit!

2nd time here in a week for lunch with different groups...great flavors and sauces...had six different items that were very good: blue crab & deviled egg chips, fried chicken, little gem caesar...2nd time we tried the catfish- on top of beef brisket collard greens-outstanding...tex-mex chopped salad in and xlnt dressing and smokey chicken, finally the brisket dip sandwich was a rave hit w/ the mild horseradish sauce...great service and good looking crowd....all of my guests were impressed with the food.
