Diner Reviews
  • "As good as any New Orleans restaurant, even Commander's Palace. The wait staff made a couple of mistakes but was very gracious about it and made everything right. I'll be back for sure!"

  • "Elegant, comfortable restaurant. Good food; good service; good place."

  • "A friend of mine is on the search for the best fried chicken, so I took him to Pican. He LOVED it! But not as much as I loved their special catfish dish with shrimp and crawfish in a lobster bisque. OMG I had to take the cornbread (which is ALWAYS great) to soak up the remains in my dish. had a wonderful time and really impressed my friend, too."

  • "My friend and I chose this place to go before the Oakland Speaker Series. I had the Shrimp and Grits and she had a beautiful pork dish. YUMMY! And, the food server was prompt as she knew we had time constraints."
    Dined on 9/16/2014
  • "The duck was excellent, just not enough of it. Listed veg served with it were minuscule shavings...one must order sides for a normal meal and that Makes it very pricey, indeed."

  • "Pican is great place for a special occasion or catch up with friends. From the New Orleans style decor and high ceilings to great menu of gourmet soul food, it is a great go to place."

  • "My friends and I really enjoyed Pican. Our server, Rashad, was very attentive and well-trained. The food was all delicious, especially the fried green tomatoes. My friends had cocktails, which they really enjoyed. I recommend Pican if you're looking for elegant southern food."

  • "2nd time here in a week for lunch with different groups...great flavors and sauces...had six different items that were very good: blue crab & deviled egg chips, fried chicken, little gem caesar...2nd time we tried the catfish- on top of beef brisket collard greens-outstanding...tex-mex chopped salad in and xlnt dressing and smokey chicken, finally the brisket dip sandwich was a rave hit w/ the mild horseradish sauce...great service and good looking crowd....all of my guests were impressed with the food."

  • "Best jambalaya ever had. Maybe best meal I have ever had"
    Dined on 9/15/2014
  • "Love love love. The food was exquisite and so many surprising blends that melt in your mouth. I especially enjoyed the blue crab, shrimp and artichoke dip."

  • "We had a very nice time here. Our waiter (Rashad) is a true professional. The Seafood Boil was very very good, with shrimp NOT overcooked (like all the other places seem to do). The onion rings are knife-and-fork worthy...delicious, delicate, crispy, yet not greasy. Lemonade... YUM! It was fine dining, with high-tone comfort food and in a plush environment. We had lunch in the salon room, very nice. I can't wait to go back for dinner."

  • "This was a great spot for an anniversary dinner. The service was top notch, the food was excellent. Had a hard time deciding what to order. All the choices sounded great. Had the Gulf shrimp and grits and the chicken cracklin for starters. I had jambalaya and she had the fried chicken with crawfish mac and cheese. Little tweaks and updates to classic southern dishes made for a very enjoyable meal."

  • "I've been here twice and each time I have had great service and great food. I will keep coming back!"

  • "Great food. The fried chicken here is perfect. The pork shank is great."

  • "It's been a while since we've gone to a restaurant where the food was actually really good and it didn't feel like the menu was trying too hard. Pican hit the spot. Everything was perfect. We started with cocktails at the bar. They had a great list to start from with some interesting cocktails. When we were seated we had teh friend green tomato appetizer, the fried chicken dinner with classic mac and cheese and a BBQ rib special. They were all incredible! I would highly recommend the appetizer. We finished with a peach cobbler, which was also good, but maybe not as up to par as the other food we tried. The service was great from greeting to the bar to our waiter. I will definitely go back."

  • "We had Jill as are server. Let me tell you something! It was our 55th wedding anniversary. When we mentioned it to Jill, she went over and above. They served us champagne, a dessert surprise of a candle on a plate that said ''Happy Anniversary'' and two chocolate decadent cakes...heavenly!! Jill made our day she was wonderful with her winning smile and bubbly personality. We will definately return and ask for Jill!!!"

  • "My husband and I tried Pican for the first time and were not disappointed. The shrimp and grits were quite tasty with a Worcestershire gravey. The fried chicken was cooked to perfection with a beautiful cripy crust and the Mac and cheese side was better than mom's. With a creamy bacon sauce and just the right amount of heat, the corn maque choux was a great addition. The wait staff was attentive and very personable. The decor was simple yet elegant and the food was moderately priced. We're looking forward to our return."

  • "At lunchtime in uptown Oakland, this is our go to place for team celebrations - welcoming newcomers, saying goodbye to those moving on, "great job" lunches, you name it. The staff can easily handle groups of 8 - 12 people, recognize that we also need to get back to work so they are so efficient and everyone loves their ever changing menu. I love Pican."

  • "The service was a little slow, but given how many large parties there were, they did a good job. The food was good but, my order was messed up and in general the serving size was small and a bit pricey. Glad I wasn't paying but would go again for a special occasion!"

  • "We had heard so much about Pican over the past few months, that we had to go there. Our dinner exceeded our expectations. The restaurant is beautiful, the food and service fantastic! We already made a return reservation!"

  • "Although I have dined at Pican's for brunch on numerous occasions, this was the first time that I had the restaurant to myself. For the first 20 minutes or so, my guest and I had the undivided attention of the staff. The quietness made for a very intimate and romantic setting. The food was delicious and for the first time I tried the Sexy Bacon...AMAZING! Pican's will always be among my top choices for fine dining in Oakland."

  • "We were seated immediately. The service was excellent. The server knew the wine list. They were out of several items on the menu, and the server alerted us."

  • "Tasty cocktails, weighted toward bourbon variants. Southern flavors, gently encouraging exploration of jambalaya and catfish. Prompt and responsive service. Valet parking. An exotic excursion."
    Dined on 9/5/2014
  • "We have been to Pican numerous times. The menu on this last visit was out-dated. There were 3 entrees that were not available as well as other special items for the month of August. It is not very impressive to dine on Sept. 4th when the menu still has August only items."

  • "The food, location, and ambiance make this restaurant a real find. I've eaten there twice in the last year, and would go there again....maybe. While the host was very friendly and energetic, our wait staff was non-responsive to our arrival and throughout the meal. Regularly, we noticed our waiter chatting/laughing with one of the bartenders (one of the managers we were told) even after I complained to that bartender that we had waited way too long for service at our table. Perhaps the success has gone to their heads. Thankfully, that doesn't seem to be true for the wonderful people in the kitchen that continue to knock out great food."

  • "Food was very good. The service was slow but professional. But what was so surprising was how out of date the menu was. They handed us the menu and disappeared for 10 minutes. When the server finally came over he told us that all 4 menu items we had picked were not available!! In fact the entire section labeled peach specials was no longer valid. Why was this advertised on their sidewalk billboard. When my wife asked them why the server just shrugged. We ended up with the fried chicken which was very good but all in all a disappointing night. Not sure when or if we're going back there. So many other good restaurants to try. If they had just told us that 1/4 of the menu was unavailable when they seated us for a 6:30 dinner."

  • "How do you go from FOUR STARS down to TWO STARS? Bland chicken, NEVER GOT my MARGARITA, had to settle for a $23 shot of Clase Azul, which is $5 more than everybody else. AND having to wait THIRTY FIVE MINUTES from getting two good appetizers (pork belly wraps and shrimp-n-grits) and the entrees"
    Dined on 9/2/2014
  • "Not much space to wait when you arrive and your reservation isn't available yet, but that's part because the bar was completely full. Food was good, southernish with a California flair."

  • "Pican has become one of our favorite places to have some very good New Orleans fine dining. The menu choices are definitely in line with the best News Orleans has to offer. The staff is cheerful and attentive, Michael is wonderful. Would love to go each month to enjoy whatever they are offering that day. Valet parking right outside the door which is an awesome advantage."

  • "Last year we'd heard about a great restaurant for fried chicken. Pican proved to be that and more. The impeccable service, ambience, and especially the food were worth a trip to Oakland. The chicken is fantastic, crispy on the outside succulent inside. Perfectly seasoned and served piping hot. The catfish was similarly tasty as can be. I'm not a big fan of Mac 'n' Cheese but Pican's was good enough to make an exception. The perfect finish was the Bourbon Peach Cobbler with cream cheese vanilla ice cream. Out of this world! The meal is a bit pricey but well worth the expense."

  • "Everything was wonderful and a breath of fresh air from the usual faire. Parking was very easy and the wait staff very friendly."

  • "The brisket hash is worth it! Very nice ambiance, staff was a little overwhelmed at Sunday brunch. Place was very busy. Lots of families. The house Bloody Mary was too much for me. Should have shared with my SO."
    Dined on 8/24/2014
  • "Vibrant scene. Aesthetically pleasing environment, music in the background and very good food! I had the best cheesy grits ever!! A bit off on catfish ... It tasted old ... not fresh. Their version of beignets are one of the best "northern" versions I have had. Not NOLA level but good! Cocktails are balanced. Pitcher of Mimosas at $25 are not worth it for quality of ingredients used. Our peach mimosas were bland. Nice uptown location. The hostess on brunch duty on Sunday, 8/24 was very aloof and robot-like."
    Dined on 8/24/2014
  • "I've been here for dinner and enjoyed it and can now say the same about their brunch. Try a side of the fried chicken with whatever you order. It's just as good as it is on their dinner menu."
